Release Party, Chat and Contest With Author Teresa D’Amario

Posted under Chat, Contests, Guest Bloggers, Site News by Site Hostess on Tuesday 15 December 2009 at 1:00 pm

Hi everyone! First let me thank Bitten by Books for letting me visit. What a wonderful place to tell you about my new release. I don’t know about you guys, but I am just STOKED right now! I’m about to undergo the busiest month of my writing career, starting with the release of Lone Wolf. Yep, it’s here, the sequel to Tigress by the Tail, and then with the release of Dark Succession, the long awaited sequel to SheWolf.

Like many authors, I received a lot of great feedback from readers on The Moon: Tigress by the Tail. Most were enamored with Logan, Lance Maxey’s oldest brother in Tigress. Logan spent a lot of his time in Tigress staring at the beautiful Lin, and giving Lance very cryptic advice about love and how not to screw it up. Of course that means everyone wants to know why he was so secretive.

But Logan, just like in Tigress by the Tail, isn’t ready to share his story yet. He got quite grumpy with me when I tried to rush him. Instead, I found myself learning about another character from Tigress by the Tail. Many of you may remember Cassie’s captivity in the bowels of the GSA, where she was treated to some severely drugged meat. During her captivity she received advice from a fellow shifter. His name? We never knew. Just that he’s a wolf shifter (werewolf). Jacob, eat your heart out!

Another person in Tigress who managed to keep a very low profile is Lance’s sister. Four muscular and powerful brothers, yet nobody mentions the sister. How can that be? Because she was a bit busy saving animals! Krystal Maxey, Lance’s sister, is an animal cop. Her love of animals has taken her to the point she specializes in their protection. Her job on a day to day basis is to handle animal abuse cases, gathering injured and abused animals, and arresting the villains willing to perpetrate such atrocities. And that’s where our story begins. Krystal Maxey is trying to bring down a really bad guy. One who’s about to take off the head of a wolf he has locked in a kennel. But will she be in time?

But my question to you, of course, is if each of the Maxey’s is linked with a shifter, which type of shifter should they be? So far we have a Tigress, and Krystal is paired with a wolf. What type of animal should Jared, Ross or Logan be paired to, and why?

Hi Teresa. Thanks for joining us here today.

Hmm — how about doing some pairings of “animals” that don’t typically get along in the wild? I think it would be interesting to see the dynamic and how it could be different with shifters.

Hi Elizabeth. Thanks so much. :) It should be there soon. :D And Carol, thanks so much for having me.

As for pairs not normally together, I’ve laid the groundwork, setting up my world rules so it will work, but haven’t written any as of yet. But you never know what’s coming. :D

Hi Teresa! Thanks for being here with us today!
I haven’t read Tigress by the Tail yet, but it sounds like something I would enjoy, as does Lone Wolf. Since I haven’t read your series yet I can’t really answer your question about what animal to pair the people with. You could either match them with someone that would go along with their temperments, or go the other way and do the whole opposites attract thing.
Who is your favorite character that you’ve written about?
Who are your favorite authors in any genres?
    Thank you!

    Hi Teresa,

I haven’t had a chance to read any of your books yet but they sound really interesting. Do you plot out your story and then write it or does the plot take shape as you write?

    Hello Teresa, Congratulations!

Jared should be pair with a Panther, Ross should be paired with an Orangutan, Logan should be pair with a Manatee sorry I don’t have any reasons.

    Off to get your book.

  7. Comment by Teresa D'Amario — December 15, 2009 @ 1:57 pm

    Hi Sandy,

Thanks for stopping by. I’m kind of a mismash between a plotter and a pantser. I start out with “nothing” but the characters, but usually a few chapters in, my head is going faster than my typing, so I’ve plotted the entire book by the time I’m half through. But I never write it down for 2 reasons: One, it takes time and I can’t write if I’m doing that, and Two, because once I write something it feels kind of permanent, so I feel bound to go in that direction. I do occasionally divert from my original plot when the characters take me in odd directions, so I need that freedom to go. :D I’m strange, I know. LOL.

Hi Cyd, You have me laughing. Orangutan, I can’t even spell that, so I don’t think it would work. LOL. But you are SOOO Close on one of them. You don’t even know HOW close. Maybe I’ll reveal the secret on which one nabbed at the end of tomorrow. :D

Hi Amanda, somehow I missed your post. That was strange. I swear it wasn’t there before (Cleans off glasses).

Okay, my favorite character, that’s really tough. I love them all. :D I like hot, masculine dudes with alot of animal magnetism, even if they are human, which Lance is, (That is if you call a Wizard human) in Tigress. Lance has this special way about him that makes you think of a little boy right up until he takes on the world. :D Damon though, is very special. He’s very lost, and while he isn’t the most alpha of my heroes, he’s more than ready to give up his life for the woman he loves. So right now, of the 3 books I have out, it’s a tossup between Lance and Damon.

For favorite authors, there are tons! I mean tons. I love paranormal and can’t get enough. I’m not as much into vampires, unless they are the hot blooded type. This week my favorites are Larissa Ione and Nalini Singh, but I waiver back and forth between a lot of different authors as favs. :D

  14. Comment by Teresa D'Amario — December 15, 2009 @ 3:18 pm

    Hi Sarah,

I adore it. I really do. The first time I read a paranormal romance, I felt like I was coming home. I tell people it’s ’cause I was raised on too much Dark Shadows and Star Trek. I like the unusual. In fact, I crave it. The second thing I ever wrote (I can’t remember the first one because I was eleven) was a space/paranormal/futuristic type book. I was 15. Back then, paranormals existed only as horror. My dad used to buy me all those “unsolved mystery” books, which were all about paranormal happenings. I grew to be a sponge for those things. :D

But I do read other things, fantasy, science fiction, thrillers, just about everything.

    Hi Teresa,

I wish I could tell you who I think they should be paired with but I don’t feel that I have enough knowledge as of this moment since your book is on my TBB List. I can mention this… I love pairings with more of the exotic shifters… i.e. Felines like jaguars. I myself am holding out for a Polar Bear (since I love them - my favorite animal) What about an aquatic shifter? Have you ever thought about that one.

Congrats on your busy and fun filled month.

I’ve never read your books before, but this looks really interesting. You can do a lion shifter maybe, or you can go into a whole new species like humans or faeries. Happy writings!

  17. Comment by Teresa D'Amario — December 15, 2009 @ 3:30 pm

    Hi Marnie,

Oh, you are right, exotic is best, or unexpected ones. Most of the more “exotic” ones I have planned are in the kitty family, and yes, I HAVE considered an aquatic one. but not in this series. Maybe in the future. :D I even know where it will happen, and how they’ll meet. :D As for Bears, I’ve wondered and thought, but not seriously yet, about a bear, but hadn’t decided which “Breed”.

Taylor, ever heard of Liger? I like that almost as much as a lion.
Let’s see, my favorite ideas so far:

    A Cougar (Panther)
A Tiger (another one, this one male)
    A jaguar
    A Liger
    A cheetah
    A killer whale
    A dolphin
    A Leopard
A Lion (of course, who could miss them?)

And of course, I keep coming back to the wolves. There’s reasons for that though - it’s where my ‘History’ lies. My first love of animals was for the wolf. :D But I can watch and learn about any animal and work to get it in a story. :D I actually swore I’d never write a wolf, and here I am with 2 already out and another one coming in January. They just will not be silenced!

    Hi Rachel,

Glad to see you here. :) Thanks for having me. You’re correct, there’s a few things different about this book.

This book is written about an animal rescue cop. She works in a very dark world that most people don’t realize exists. One of the villains in this book is actually based of the tale of a real person I heard about online about 15 years ago. I tried to give a blatant, truthful (if somewhat skewed to the paranormal) picture when I wrote Lone Wolf. Alot of authors write dogs or cats into books. They even make them talk. I love that. But rarely does an author explore the true depth of emotion that comes with the true, blue animal lover. I tried to portray that in this book. After all, it’s about shifters, and if you enjoy shapeshifter books, you must love animals. :)

So that’s the BIGGEST difference in this book. It delves into emotions rarely touched by a romance author. Now if it was something like Ol’ Yeller, people wouldn’t be surprised. LOL

    Hi Teresa,

Just wanted to say that I am definitely adding your books to my must read list. Your stories really sound interesting. I am always glad to see stories that use shifters/animal forms because I feel that people who may not appreciate what nature is to the planet may find something that piques their interest in this type of story and from that go on to learning more about wildlife and the environment. Can’t wait to see your work.

    Hi Patricia,

thank you so much. :) And you are right. I try to use true animal behavior in my books in order to give an insight into the nature of the beast. Someone asked me how I do my research once. Most of my animal knowledge is based on a lifetime of love - where I read everything my little fingers could grasp. Now, I’ve added Youtube to my list of places I study. :D Not always to listen to the “narrator” but to truly WATCH the animals they are following. And, every now and then I get another tiny piece of info I didn’t already know and I tuck that into my brain.

LOL Cyd, you said Jared needed a Panther. that’s what he got. A beautiful, golden panther.

Oh and, Rachel asked about the next book and I forgot to answer that.

It’s titled Cougar’s Fate (The only true panther is also known as a cougar, among several other names). The two books actually overlap. Those who have read Tigress and are aware of Jared’s personality will notice there are differences in how he behaves in this book. That’s because he’s already run into his mate. Only now he can’t find her. Cougar’s fate starts about a week before Lone Wolf and goes until after Lone Wolf. I can’t tell you too much because of the overlap - it’ll give too many secrets away.

Hi Alana, great to see you! And yep, you’ve been a friend of mine since the beginning of facebook (or my beginning ON facebook). LOL.

Hmm, what am I looking forward to in the sequels? It’s writing about skills or beings that are different. For those who read Tigress, you know Jared has a very unusual skill, and to be matched with a Cougar, well that should be fun, because they haven’t been used much in romance shifter stories yet.

For Ross’s, I’m looking forward to dipping into a breed of cat I’ve never seen used. I’m really excited about it, and have been studying the cat since the moment I came to the conclusion I’d use it. I’ve seen a few cougars, and I’ve seen a few Jaguar’s (the other 2 planned in this series) but I’ve never seen a Cheetah used. :)

Also, I like working from the female shifter’s view point. While Lone Wolf is a male shifter, the rest in this series are all female shifters. It’s a lot harder than you’d think, putting a woman in an instinctive only situation. We humans are so ingrained in our behaviors, it’s hard to see us as “animals”, but we are.

Mina, thanks so much for dropping by You’ll have to let me know what you think of it when you read it. :D

Hi Mina, yep, I’m considering, for another book, maybe not even related to this series, an eagle or a hawk. I haven’t quite decided which yet. I’m still trying to work out how a big, powerful man can shrink to that size though, so once I get that worked out, I can create the book. :D Magic works, but I’m thinking I need something a little deeper on that edge.

But I will be honest - Other than Eagles, Hawks and Falcons, I’m not so much into birds. Believe it or not, birds are the only “Creature” I’m naturally afraid of. I’ll walk up to a wolf or even a snake before I will a little parrot. Sad, eh? LOL.

Hi Michelle. And Merry Christmas to you too! hope you’re done with all your shopping. I’m not. LOL

Hmm, best inspiration? That’s a toughie, because it comes from so many places. But to be honest, among my shifter books, it’s the animals who do so. I’m forever watching animal specials, reading animal books, or hanging out training dogs. Sometimes one of the animals will do something, or I’ll hear a bit of narrative on one of the specials that catches my attention. It’s usually a “Well would you look at that” moment, and that sends me off into plotting. :D

    Hey Rachel,

I thought about YA stories for about 2 minutes. Then I realized since I haven’t been a YA for a very long time and have no kids, it would be mighty hard to make it appeal to the appropriate audience. LOL. While I’m sure one or two of my nieces/nephews would want to help out, I’m sure they wouldn’t wanna spend all their time editing my dialogue and saying “what’s wrong with you?” too often. Besides, they live far away, so I’m stuck. But I do enjoy reading YA more than I should.

By the Way, here’s the blurb for Cougar’s Fate.

Rena still sits in a dark hole, waiting for the man who promised to return. Her captors have moved her three times, hiding her deep in the forests of North Carolina. Their goal: Make her lose all sense of her humanity, enabling the vicious cat inside her to rule on animal instinct alone. Will Jared come back in time? Or has he left her in the hands of these people determined to ruin her soul?

Jared Maxey met the woman of his dreams while captive in a pit, created by his enemies and victim of another of GSA’s experiments on the shapeshifters of the world. Using his own wizardly talents, he manages to escape, but is unable to get her out at the same time. He promises to return. But it’s too late. She’s dead. Killed by his own sister.

I just have to ask about the grotto in Tigress. How did you come up with that idea? My sister and I both felt that it was one of the hottest scenes we’d read in awhile. (If anyone here hasn’t read that book yet to know what I am talking about, I highly recommend it.)

Hey Kat, thanks so much. :D Well, you’ll just have to go get Tigress by the Tail and get started. :D

Joey, oh thank you so much. That is a hot scene, isn’t it? I kept thinking about how she would want to have a home that had a natural feel to it. But she doesn’t want the world to know what she is, right? I kept seeing her sitting up on this stone ledge, sulking. Her tail hung down and twitched and her best friend kept trying to get her to come down. I’m like “how can that be? She has a house and a bedroom, and she lives like a person does. She doesn’t have a cave!”

Then I remembered a tour of the Neuschwanstein castle I took many years ago. Inside is a grotto. Here’s a pic. http://www.neuschwanstein.de/englisch/palace/grotte.htm

Now if in the 1800’s they could create something like that, surely we could do better here in present day. :) So, My dear little tigress had her very own grotto built into the back part of her house. :D And, since tigers do like to swim, I added a little pool in it for her.

So that’s how the grotto scene came about. Imagine my surprise when she shoved him back into the pool!

I’m so glad you liked it!

Hi Belinda, You have some great ideas for the “boys” to get together with as shifters. :) All great ones. You know, I haven’t played with dragon shifters in this series yet. I have that for another totally different one, but not this one.

Thank you so much for buying the three books. You are so awesome! As for the series, there will be 5, maybe six books in the Maxey wizard series, one for each sibling, and I’m considering one for another character introduced in Tigress, at least as an anthology.

For the other series, with SheWolf, I don’t have a set number planned, but #2 should be out in a month or so. :)

Hi Stacey, and thanks. :) I think you’ve got some great ideas. Yep, the dragon is something I hadn’t considered. Maybe not for this series, but who knows, there is a little dragon anthology I wrote a few years ago that may come to light some day. :) They are pretty hot too. :)

Tawania, my humble apologies for missing your post. I must clean off these glasses! I swear. My mom tells me I once had mashed potatoes on them for a week when I was a kid. Maybe it’s happened again. :D First, thank you for dropping by and the congrats. :) You’ll have to let me know what you think of the books once you try them.
Have I always wanted to be a writer? In a way. When I was a kid, I wanted a job where I could read all day long! Sounds like an editor, right? Only I really hated to sit and listen in english. I had a nice “foundation”, but I couldn’t name the parts of speech. So I kinda let that dream go by the wayside.

Yet when I was 11, I wrote a little story for a school contest. I got an A in class, but never had the money to enter the main contest, so it didn’t go anywhere. I don’t remember what it was about, just remember my disappointment when I couldn’t enter the contest. When I was 15 or 16, I came up with this really super complicated world, kind of 1/3 super hero, 1/3 futuristic, and 1/3 sci fi, with all of it on earth. I got frustrated with my portable typewriter after about 150 pages and quit. Even today I still remember that story and maybe someday I’ll revamp it and do something with it. :) Since then I’ve played with writing, but was never serious.

After that, I’d read books and think “I could do this, ya know, if I ever had the right idea.” I just couldn’t come up with an idea! Then, I read an entire series in a row, about 5 years ago, when I quit my job. By reading so many along the same lines, it’s like it kickstarted that old desire I’d had as a child. By the last book I was thinking “what if she did this? What if she wrote that?” and by that time, my head was spinning with ideas.

The first book I FINISHED that wasn’t a short story, still has not been published. I’ve recently rewritten it, and we shall see if it makes headway now. :) It’s a paranormal set in egypt. :) it’s NOT a shapeshifter tale.

My first PUBLISHED book is SheWolf, which is quite funny in itself. I always swore I’d never write a wolf shifter. There were plenty out there, so why add to them? But the night I saw Kieran in my head, I knew he was a wolf. I’d been beaten by the wolf, who howls his celebration every time I Finish one. :) Ok, maybe that’s an exaggeration, but you get the picture. LOL.

I hope that answers your questions (It probably went deeper than you ever wanted to know)

Ok, gonna go look and see if I missed anybody else. :) Then off to bed. I’ll check back in the AM, but have a dental appt very early. So be patient, I will be back. :)

Beverly! OMG, How did I miss you? *hanging head embarrassed*.

You asked: what kind of pitch would you give me about it if u saw me ina store and i was just looking for something new to read

Oh that’s easy. If you’ve never read a shapeshifter novel: Did you like the movie Underworld? Yeah? Oh then you are going to love my work! LOL. Notice I didn’t say Twilight? That’s not because I write about vamps, but because I have more edge to my writing than shows in twilight. and more sex. :D

If you’ve read shifters before, I tell you how it is. It’s about government corruption and experimentation. It’s about a man who doesn’t know who, or what he is. He doesn’t know if the experiments done on him caused him to be a werewolf or if he was born to it. It’s about a woman who’s job it is to save animals from those who would harm them. What happens when these two come together is filled with intrigue, action and explosive magic.

my question to you is whats one of the things youve done to celebrate a new book or a finished manuscript

Celebrating. Well, I honestly don’t do much of that. I think when I hit the NY times bestseller list, THEN I’ll do that. :D I’m really weird, I’m a perfectionist/realist. I always think “Well this is great, but soon, it will be even better”. But, at the end of every manuscript, I type in great big letters THE END, just to feel the satisfaction. Then, I come back the next day and remove it, because of course you don’t really put that in manuscripts anymore. LOL.

I can tell you when SheWolf finaled in the PRISM, I cried. And when I get a really good fan letter, I cry then too. Ok, I admit it, I’m a crybaby.

RAQUELLE (Ok, I know why I missed yours, you posted the same time I did. You asked: Hey Teresa What Are One Or Two Things We Wouldn’t Normally Know About You?

Gee, I don’t know. LOL. Doesn’t everyone know everything? Let’s see, After I retired from the AF (which almost everyone knows) I once worked for a webhosting company. It was grueling work and long hours. I loved it. I was good at it. But after several years there, I just couldn’t stand the daily grind anymore. I needed something else. When I quit there was when I started writing, as I was starved for some kind of originality in my life.

Debby C - Yes, real wolves are awesome. I try, when I write to get that sense you feel when around them. I saw my first wolf about 15 or 16 years ago over in Germany. It was being kept at an animal kennel/reserve. We picked up our dogs and I wasn’t paying attention when suddenly the hair on the back of my neck stood up. I turned just in time to see the wolf lunge at my dog. Course there was a fence between us, thank heaven. It was a European blue wolf. He was skinny and had been abused by whoever had brought him to the shelter. He actually affected me more than the Lion, which was sunning himself on his back sound asleep. LOL.

Amber, thanks so much! Great to have you here today. :) Can’t wait to see what you think!

Thanks for being here. I’m going to add this to my wishlist based on the chatter, Underworld and guys getting shoved in water. :) I recently found Dark Shadows and like this show my parents watched. :) There are mermaid shifter-types in Anita Blake. I thought if you were to do a bird, make it a bird of prey, and so you thought of exactly that. Most shifters are predators. I definitely vote cheetah. I’m partial to cat shifters. I also like the female shifter point of view, like Kelley Armstrong’s. Thanks again!

  72. Comment by Teresa D'Amario — December 16, 2009 @ 6:47 am

    Hi Dovile,

Thanks for stopping by. I considered writing about the snow tigers, but chose a golden tiger instead. The Tigress in Tigress by the tail is a golden tiger. Both color types are traced back to the same pair of tigers in their genealogy and both are deviant types of colors (not recommended). But the Ebook for Tigress doesn’t show that. It was something I added primarily for the print version.

As for snakes, I don’t find them all that sexy, but I have considered them. Right now I don’t have any plans to write one.

Hi R.E.B., at least I can say I was 8 when the original DS went off the air. I was so young I actually cried. Strange, I know. :)

It is true most shifters are predators. I think it’s because we find that predatory instinct so hot when we put it into this animal/man package. Humans have lost a great deal of their predatory nature when in reality it’s buried deep in our own psyche’s as well.

Thanks again for stopping by! Ok, time for my dental appointment *shudder*. I’m such a wimp, I know. LOL.
