Sorry haven’t read this book though.
Is it that much of a good reaD?
How are the characters, are they well-rounded enough?
[Reply]
Ooh I LOVED this book. It was so awesome. Talk about a lot of family troubles and I thought my family was crazy! Wow!
So cannot wait to read the next one. I feel that I might need to re-red this one before then, but I have so many books to read right now and I asked for some for Xmas I don’t know when I will get the chance to re-read it.
I loved Sabina she was totally KA! And I really liked the short story that was in the Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance 2! It was a great prequel to the novel, but again I really need to read it again to understand that part of the story, it rang a distant bell but that was all. I remember reading that book really fast too, so it my memory is really crappy about the details.
Ruby, the book is fabulous! The characters are well rounded, omg you will love the characters you should love and hate the other ones with a passion because they can be so downright evil.
[Reply]
Wow, I haven’t even had my first cup of coffee this morning and you guys have already made my day. I’ll be hanging around today while you dish about Sabina and the gang so feel free to ask questions. And seriously, if this discussion doesn’t devolve into jokes about hairless kitties and faery porn fairly quickly I’ll be forced to do something drastic. Just sayin’.
[Reply]
Oh, I also forgot to point out that my virtual reading vlog is still on the side bar over here———–> (now look up– there I am). So if you haven’t read the book and are curious, you can witness my horrible acting skills.
[Reply]
1.) Favorite scene Giguhl becomes hairless, poor demon kittie.
2.) Giguhl is my 2nd most favorite character.
3.) The 1st paragraph can sell the book to almost anyone.
Red-Headed Stepchild is sitting in the must get signed at RT stack.

I have not read this yet, for those of you who have read it, what would you compare it to? The book is in my closet on my TBR, you know how that goes!
[Reply]
Ruby, The characters are very well developed.
Elie, Red-Headed Stepchild is unique, very original and off hand I really can’t think of anything to compare it to.

I haven’t read this book. It is a YA book correct? I haven’t really read many YA’s until recently but I do find them a pleasant change for the adult stories.
For all those that have read it - whats one thing you would say to about this book that would make a complete strange have to pick it up and read it?
[Reply]
Cyd, thanks for the compliments. I’m thrilled you enjoyed it.
Hi Marnie, Red-Headed Stepchild is definitely not a YA. For a taste, you can listen to me reading from the first chapter on the sidebar. I’ll leave it up to the others to opine on why a stranger would pick it up.
To everyone else, thanks for stopping by.
[Reply]
Marnie, this is definitely NOT YA, though many teens would likely enjoy it.
The book has some very big surprises, and some pretty cool additions to the vampire mythos.
[Reply]
Cool… I will have to put it on the TBB list.
[Reply]
I have to agree my favorite scene was where Gighul loses his hair. I don’t know if it was the effect of seeing a demon reduced down to Mr. Bigglesworth or the visual of hair just going *POOF* and flying in all directions that made me laugh. Plus, what is cooler than a demon familiar nicknamed Mr. Giggles?
I am sure it is no surprise that Gighul is my favorite character who is not featured on the cover of the book.
Honestly I loved that opening chapters. I would have been less into the story and characters if it had been another “vampire with a soul” scene in the opening chapter. It made me believe her as an assassin for the vampires.
[Reply]
ZombieJoe, you bring up an interesting point. Maybe I should talk to my publisher about putting Giguhl on the covers instead of Sabina. Because really, what sells books more than a shriveled hairless pu-, I mean, cat on the cover?
[Reply]
Yeah, maybe not such a good idea. He would likely look like a raisin with ears or a dessicated scrot… never mind.
[Reply]
I think we now know why authors don’t design their own covers. But I might steal that description for the next book. You don’t mind, right?
[Reply]
Hi Jaye. Thanks for joining us.
[Reply]
Actually Jaye I would get a kick out of it. Feel free to use the description.

(waves at Carol) Thanks for stopping by!

Since things seem to be slow right now, how ’bout a question or two?
I know that Mage in Black is coming out soon. When?
Also, in addition to the short story in the Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance 2 that came out earlier this year are there any other works to keep our eyes out for? Any non-Sabina manuscripts in the works?
[Reply]
Hi Jaye!
I’m sorry to say that I haven’t read this, yet. I promised myself that I wouldn’t buy myself any more presents until after Christmas. It is on my wishlist though. If I don’t get it for Christmas, it’s the one of the books I’m getting on my first trip to the bookstore after Christmas, because I cannot wait to read it. I’ve heard so many great things about this book!

Why thank you for asking, ZJ.
The Mage in Black releases on April 1, 2010. Not sure what it means that all my books come out on April Fool’s Day.
Right now I’m working on the book three in the series, which is called Green-Eyed Demon. When this one’s out the door I want to take some time to develop a proposal for a new UF series, but I don’t want to give any details on that yet. And, of course, there’s also a chance that the fans will be clamoring for more Sabina and the story will continue past three books. We’ll see. I also recently wrote a screenplay for a TV pilot with a friend, which we’re sending out. It’s not paranormal, though. It’s really different territory for me, but I’m in love with the story so I’m hoping we can go somewhere with it. But no matter what I expect 2010 to be an exciting year.
[Reply]
I am happy to be here, Jaye (they were my questions).
I LOVED your book. I have been reviewing here for a year now, and RHSC is just about the only book I read last year that was not for review (other than my Dragon*Con reading), because I just could not wait!
[Reply]
Wow, Carol. That’s amazing praise. Thanks so much.
[Reply]
I’m not normally known for my serious side. But Jaye knows I have one (so does Rachel), so, when I tell you that I loved Red-Headed Stepchild. Know this: I loved Red-Headed Stepchild. But it’ll probably be for a different reason than you. I know tons of urban fantasy writers and mostly they’re pretty awesome, sometimes they absolutely aren’t. But what really either hooks me into a book by a person I’ve met or repels me and causes me to dump it, is the voice. Does it read like that author wrote it, can I “hear” them in there? I can tell you that Jaye’s is authentic. If you love Red-Headed you’re going to love her and vice-versa. That’s not always the case.
End unsolicited author rimjob.
[Reply]
Unsolicited rimjobs are my favorite. Thanks, Mark. It means a lot for you to lower your snark shield and let us see the softer side. Thanks, man.

I haveto agree with Mark I really didnt read alot of urban fantasy before i started Reading Jaye and even Marks work before i was urban retarded never had the chance to get in to it then bam i found marks site then went and got a copy of his book stalked all the usual online places for the goods as my mom calls it been hooked since and yess thesecharacters r well rounded and fun and i have to say they make me apperciate that my family is nutts but can always be worse

Hi Everyone,
Wow!I missed a lot. Okay, I haven’t read this book yet, I did check out the reviews online. The reviews were great and I am definitely putting this book on my ever growing TBR pile/list. From reading these comments I can see that this book is well loved, even more reason for me to get it.

I loved this book, and agree with Cyd J, it draws you in from the first paragraph! I got it as a birthday gift, and i finished it two days later, could’nt put it down!
My favourite character has to be Giguhl, just because his personality is so at odds with what you would expect! Definitely demonstrates that urban fantasy doesn’t have to take itself too seriously, but can still tell a brilliant story!

I also loved the conversations between Clovis and Sabina, you really felt the tension of whether he knew what she was up to, and if she was going to lose her temper and ruin it! definite edge of your seat stuff!

I have not read this book , but review sounds wonderful!

I loved the scene when Sabina made Giguhl a hairless cat. It sounds like a lot of people enjoyed that scene. Besides Sabina, I’d have to say my favorite character was Giguhl. His obsession with buying crazy stuff on TV was hilarious. I was a bit surprised by the first chapter, but I was engrossed from the start to the finish. I really enjoyed the part of the book where we learn more about Sabina’s parents as well. I have to say that every time I list the books that I enjoyed this year, Red-Headed Stepchild is at the top of the list.

Oh wow, I went away for dinner and some of you came out of the woodwork. Yay!
Beverly G, her family is crazy, isn’t it? I love writing about paranormal family dysfunction. A lot of people think it would be awesome to be immortal, but can you imagine being stuck with your family for eternity?
Sophie, I’m thrilled to hear the tension between Clovis and Sabina worked for you. Giguhl usually ends up getting a lot of the spotlight, but I loved writing Clovis.
Hi, Ida. Thanks for stopping by.
Barbara, we’ll learn more about Sabina’s folks as the series continues. I’d love to go back and write their story one of these days.
Stacey, I’ve pasted the book blub below:
In a world where being of mixed-blood is a major liability, Sabina Kane has the only profession fit for an outcast: assassin. But, her latest mission threatens the fragile peace between the vampire and mage races and Sabina must scramble to figure out which side she’s on. She’s never brought her work home with her—until now.
This time, it’s personal.
Also, you can go tot he sidebar of this site and see a vlog where I read from the first chapter.
Aw, Beverly, thanks! It’s so great to know that my warped imagination doesn’t frighten you. Seriously, though, thanks for that.

I haven’t read this book but I’ve added it to my TBR list. I had to laugh at the title sice that’s one of the phrases I’m always using, you know “they treat me like a red-headed stepchild.” Is this part of a series? If so what number is it in the series?

Belinda, this is the first book in the series — the second will be out 4/1.

This book and author are amazing I absolutely can not wait for Mage in Black!
I have to say I loved almost all of the characters including the frilly roommate.
If you guys haven’t already read this book, it sat on my TBR pile for a couple weeks after it was released and I honestly wished I had picked it up the day it came out, it was that good.
I can’t believe Jayne also has the third book titled! The Green Eyed Demon… vaboom! (Yea so that was a little weird, but I love the series)
Good luck with your TV pilot and new series!
[Reply]
I have to agree my favorite scene was where Gighul loses his hair. The 1st chapter sold me on your book1 I loved it! I had just finished the lot of Karen Chance books and I hadn’t found something that covered it all for me! AND then came RHSC! I got my fix..> I couldn’t find the action I needed plus the humor is priceless. For those of you who have not read this? What the hell are you waiting for Hairless Demon kitty a kick ass heroine with family issues (wow that’s an understatement) and ACTION. Loved this book. I can’t wait for Mage in Black! Nothing say christmas like a pissed of woman with a Crazy bitch for a Grandma and a hair less demon cat, oh and cashmere sweaters! But thats enough about Jaye!~giggle~ The book rocked.
[Reply]
I found the action not couldn’t!!! Sorry
