Interview:

Hi Caitlin!

Welcome to Bitten by Books, we are excited to have you here today!

I would like to thank you taking the time to join us for the question and answer session with our readers. It has been very interesting to get to know more about you and what makes you tick as a writer! Readers, if you haven’t done so already please stop by and get your copy of Caitlin’s newest book Demon Bound.

BBB: What are the most challenging and the most rewarding aspects of writing?

CK: The most challenging is just sitting down and doing it–I’m a procrastinator and getting my behind into the chair is the eternal struggle. The most rewarding part is watching an idea turn into a story. The transformation never fails to amaze me.

BBB: If you could have one of your books made into a movie, which book and who would your dream cast be?

CK: Oh, I’d love to see the Black London books turned into films. As for casting, I think David Tennant from Doctor Who would make a fantastic Jack, and I’d just like the rest of the cast to be able to pull off an accent.

BBB: What are your top 3 favorite paranormal books and movies?

CK: The book question is impossible–as far as movies, I love anything that involves a ghost story or a peek at something otherwordly without being over the top. That said, I also loved both of the Hellboy movies.

BBB: What character (s) in any of your books is most like you?

CK: None, really. They may incorporate aspects of me, but my characters are themselves and I am myself.

BBB: What is the most ridiculous thing that you have thought about doing to any of your characters but never did?

CK: I thought about including this totally romantic-comedy style over-the-top wedding in one of my books. But that was silly, so I scrapped it.

BBB: How do you keep track of your world building?

CK: I’m actually pretty good at keeping my continuity in my head–it’s like some people can remember song lyrics or number sequences. If I forget anything, I just go back and read my previous manuscript. I don’t put it in spreadsheets or anything…I believe worldbuilding should be organic rather that restricted, so if I really feel I need to include something, I find a way to make it work.

BBB: What do you feel are the benefits of the new electronic readers such as  Kindle 2 or Sony Digital Book Reader to the environment?

CK: I don’t own one, so I can’t speak as to how they might impact paper book buying habits.

BBB: What impact do electronic readers create on the bottom line for authors in the end? Do you feel they have a negative impact or positive, or no impact at all that you can see?

CK: I don’t really get into this debate. People are going to read in the format they prefer, and I don’t think one format or the other has even come close to winning the battle yet.

BBB: Can you tell us about your Black London series and and the storyline that drives it?

CK: The series is the story of Pete Caldecott, a detective inspector in London, and her friend Jack Winter, who’s a mage in the Black, the supernatural version of London that lives just beside the real one. They meet again after a lot of years on a missing child case, and it leads into something much bigger, that could tear the Black apart in a way that hasn’t happened in thousands of years. Needless to say, that’s bad and they need to stop it, as well as staying one step ahead of all the people Jack has pissed off in his long and illustrious career as a not-quite-evil/not-quite-good mage.

BBB: You must be looking forward to the release of your YA title. Can you tell us a bit about the book?

CK: THE WITCH’S ALPHABET is a steampunk fantasy novel in the Lovecraftian tradition (meaning in addition to dirigibles and clockwork there are eldritch horrors skulking in the shadows and black magic being worked.) It’s set in 1955, one that’s very different from the one we know, and is about Aoife Grayson, a girl who’s family has a history of going mad at 16. Aoife’s brother is missing, her birthday is coming fast, and when her brother sends her a cryptic message telling her she has to leave the totilitarian city where she’s grown up and venture into the world of magic beyond, Aoife embarks on a journey that will change her life for good–one way or another.

BBB: When you aren’t furiously writing or plotting away what do you do for excitement?

CK: I’m a fairly serious but amateur photographer–I really like to both model and shoot, mostly pinup, steampunk and goth projects, and I also love to do travel photography of wherever I’m heading at the moment. Otherwise I’m a total homebody–I read, watch movies and play handmaid to my two furry children.

BBB: Which authors works do you enjoy reading and do you have any other authors that you bounce ideas of?

CK: I have a group of local specific authors (and several critique partners who aren’t so local) who are willing to listen to my crazy idea ramblings, bless their hearts. /waves to Cherie and Stacia

BBB: Where do you see the paranormal/urban fantasy genre headed? Can you see it slowing down in the near future, or do you think that the immediate future is pretty bright for it?

CK: I think as a genre it’s popularity is expanding sideways, into sub-genres. Dark fantasy, steampunk, paranormal noir, historical fantasy…all of those genres have seen enormous growth in the last ten years, while the “standard” sort of UF stories are still going strong as well. I think UF is at its apex–it’s not saturated yet but it’s starting to be, and I think the seepage into these new sub-genres is going to force the industry to become more selective as the overall quality of writing readers demand rises. That said, I think well-written UF will always sell. Vampires are still going strong, and they’ve been around since the 80s at roughly the same level of popularity. I think speculative fiction as a whole is essential to any literate society, and is never going away.

BBB: We know that Jack loves the classics in music. Are there any bands from the last fifteen years that he enjoys listening to?

CK: I would say he probably listens to the underground hardcore stuff from the 90s, certainly…one of my favorite bands is the Lazy Cowgirls, and they’re in that timeframe and totally his taste.

BBB: What did you do to research the differences in American and British English? There are so many subtle differences, I imagine it was difficult to even know where to begin.

CK: I watched a lot of reality tv from BBC America to pick up idioms and speech patterns, and I have my English friends drum the subtle differences into me over and over until I got it.

BBB: Do you have any plans for book signings/ readings anytime soon? If so, where can our readers find you?

CK: I’m actually headed home for the holidays pretty soon, but if there’s an East Coast signing in the works I’ll send up the Bat Signal!

Hi Caitlin! Thanks for being her with us today! I haven’t read your Black London series yet, but I can’t wait to read it! Hopefully after the holidays I’ll get a chance to!
I was wondering, what authors most inspired you?
What people in your life have been most supportive of your writing?
    Thanks again!

Hi Caitlin- I really like the Nocturne City series, and the Black London looks really intriguing. I was wondering if you had tried to break into the comic book business as a writer of an already established series, or if you were trying to get a comic of your own published? If you had your own, is that something you’d still like to pursue?

Hiya Caitlin! I have your Nocturne City series on my Must have list for Xmas. I haven’t read them yet, but I’ve heard so many great things about them. I didn’t even know about his new series until I got the email from BBB about you being here. I can’t wait to get my hands on them, they look original and very interesting. My question for you is what I ask all the authors I chat with, what inspires you when you need inspiration? Whats your muse as it were?

Thank you for coming and talking to us fans!

Hi Caitlin!!! Thanks for stopping by…:) I actually have a question for you from Black & White, which I’m reading now. I do want to smack Jet in head for not seeing past her rules, but I do understand why she’s like that. Anyway, when is the next book out? Plus, do you ever see a romantic relationship between Jet & Iridium? They just give off the whole Xena & Gabrielle vibe to me. Thanks!

Hi, Caitlin! It’s funny this should pop up today; I’m on my way to my local Borders to pick up Demon Bound (I had a royalties check come in the mail yesterday). I like the Black London series better than the Nocturne City series (although I like those books, too). Probably because I prefer my urban fantasies to be set in locales that I might actually have a chance of visiting some day (no matter how slim); one can’t visit places that don’t exist in the real world.

The Witch’s Alphabet sounds awesome, and is hereby going on my ‘to-get’ list. :)

Hi everyone! I’ll be here all day reading your questions (and tomorrow morning too, for our Australian friends!)

    Here’s the first round!

Amanda L - I’m inspired by many writers, but the one who got me into writing fantasy was Neil Gaiman. And definitely my parents…my mother and my stepdad are endlessly encouraging and supportive.
Brittnay Green - Inspiration can literally come from anywhere. I get ideas from many places, but turning them into stories is the real trick.
Sandy G - Yes, I’ve been there three times now and every time I go I find something new to write about. It’s an amazing city, tailor-made for ghost stories.
Cyd J - My favorite to write was probably STREET MAGIC, because it was so different and fun compared to what I’d been doing. The one that gave me the most trouble was actually DEMON BOUND. I guess I had a bit of a sophomore slump writing that one…it was very difficult to do the story I’d set up in SM justice.
Elaine G - Currently I don’t have any plans to write more Nocturne City content, but that can always change depending on publisher interest.
MarnieCollette - I actually named them both after literary figures (they’re two kitties, Victor and Faust), but so far I haven’t used them in a novel. I’m sure I will, though!
newgater - I think a lot of the themes I work with are universally appealing…I’m drawn to stories about secrets, family ties, finding out who you are and how you relate to the world…and I believe that definitely has appeal to YA readers as well as adults.
Elizabeth T - I listen to anything and everything while I write, and I do have a bunch of novel-specific playlists to help me get into the mood of a particular story. I thought for a long time that I was going to be a cop when I graduated from university, but I decided that writing about them (and werewolves, demons and ghosts) was more fun and would give my mother fewer heart attacks.
Lisa D - I love the city, and it’s a great place for a fantasy novel. It’s go so much weird history you simply couldn’t make up, I can’t figure out why more people don’t set books there. I would love to live there, but I haven’t been able to make that dream reality yet.
Moonsanity/Brenda - It was a totally different experience from my fantasy stuff (although it is a steampunk/fantasy, not a straight steampunk novel that I wrote.) Really amazing fun…I love being able to play with history that way. I didn’t read many authors beforehand, because I wanted my take to be fresh and not be a slave to tropes that are already established. But I’m sure reading now!
Alana Abbott - (Hi!) The next novel, BONE GODS, is coming out in 2010 and it deals with the aftermath of DEMON BOUND as well as some new situations that have arisen from Jack’s decision at the end of that book. I’m currently contracted for four books, but I’d love to write more if the market will bear.
Jackie Burris - Funny, my parents actually love Austin and are there all the time, so yes, I’d defintely consider it if I got an invitation!
Vickie B - I have a YA trilogy starting in 2010 qand I talked about it a little bit upthread in the interview. :)

I love your idea of watching loads of BBC America to get the speech patterns and idioms down! It was impressive how many slightly different variations we found when we were in London a few months ago.

    Hi Caitlin,
Thanks for the interview. I have to admit that I hadn’t seen or heard of this series yet but it sounds pretty darn cool. I can’t wait to pick it up. When I was reading through, I was very curious about whether any song or type of music brought out some creative ideas for you. Also, your brain is completely amazing to be able to keep track of all the details for this world, but I was wondering if you ever started a book and a snippet of an idea pulls you to write another? (Gosh, I hope that made sense)

Thanks!

Hi Caitlin! Thanks for stopping by! :) I will post contest links later - I’m on my cell. I just wanted to clommemt
    & ask a question.

I LOVED Street Magic & I can’t wait to read Demon Bound! I hope/plan to read it soon! I look forward to what will happen in the series! I love Jack. I have to say that I love that you think David Tennant could be Jack! I adore him!! :)

I watch as much UK tv as I can. You mentioned watching shows - which do you watch/what are some faves? I finally got Gavin & Stacey season 1 on DVD & have been watching it on DVD. (it’s a few years old - but aired on BBC-America awhile back. I want season 2! Anyways, I’m off track.

I like asking people - if you could transport yourself into ANY book - what would it be? Would you change anything about that book?

If you could meet 3 authors from history — who would you like to meet?

I hope this isn’t too long!

Congrats on the new book! :)

And here’s another round–I’m a night owl, so keep the comments coming!

Tawania Etheridge - Pretty much always, on and off, although for a long time I thought my “day job” would be law enforcement. The first novel I ever wrote was this terrible SF thing when I was 13. I think I still have it somewhere…
Biki - I start and stop books all the time, but usually I recycle the ideas or concepts into something else until I have an actual project I’m interested in publishing. My process is a lot of refining until I hit things right. I love music, period, and get inspired by it all the time. I tend to like mixes better than individual bands and I make them when I’m stuck on something to try and jostle an idea loose.
Rebecca M - Steampunk is an aesthetic/genre movement focused on alternate history and technology. As my friend Cherie Priest so succinctly put it, it is “The fiction of a future that never happened.”
Heather C - Oh man, sorry! The next book, SHADES OF GRAY, is out in June 2010. As for the slash…it’s not something Jackie and I talked about but who knows??
Heidi Shafer - No, I deliberately try to stay away from that unless someone asks to be put into one of my books. And I have a horrid ex boyfriend that I kill off once in a while to make myself happy. Three words? Damaged, devious and strong.
Libby L - Off the top of my head I watched Top Gear, Cash in the Attic, BBC World News and the UK version of Kitchen Nightmares, because I love Gordon Ramsay. Any book? Hmm. Batman. I’ve always wanted to visit Gotham City. Three authors? Let’s say H.P. Lovecraft, Raymond Chandler and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
Denise Vega - I always wanted to tell stories in some capacity.
darchole - Actually, it’s much faster because I’m only responsible for half a book! I love it.
Elle W - I can’t point out a specific book that made me realize I wanted to tell stories, but the SANDMAN comics by Neil Gaiman were what made me realize I wanted to write fantasy, for sure.

Last round before I sleep! See you Aussies in the morning!

Jessica S - I got the idea that I wanted to tell a really good ghost story–there aren’t many of them in urban fantasy, and I love ghost stories. The rest just came naturally from that basic idea. The Nocturne City series is finished, for the time being–but count on a lot of threads being wrapped up in Book 5, DAEMON’S MARK.
Christine M - “Newlydeads” falls between STREET MAGIC and DEMON BOUND
Lisa Richards - I have five books planned for Nocturne City (with four out) and I’m currently contracted for four Black London books, but I’d love to write more. The YA will be out in Fall of 2010. As for a book I’d give everyone–probably THE BIG SLEEP by Raymond Chandler, with a supplementary copy of Lovecraft’s essay on how to write speculative fiction.
Janice D - I find names everywhere…TV, radio, conversation, other stories and even cemeteries. The idea of “fresh” stories is more of an execution issue than an issue of there being no new stories to tell. There is really nothing new under the sun–fantasy is a genre of storytelling tropes that were set out long before there was a written form for the telling. It’s how you spin the tropes to fit your time period, your life experience filter and the message you’re trying to convey that makes or breaks a story.
Beverly G - I usually go buy shoes. Really. Or some movies, or go do a photoshoot–something that has nothing to do with writing!
Shell B - Superheros are awesome! Really, I’m surprised more people aren’t doing them. My two favorite comics growing up were Batman and Wolverine. Apparently I have a thing for loners.
    Donna S - Definitely London. And I don’t know–everyone’s different!
Kayla W - Mostly answered upthread, but in short…it’s a beautiful, fantastic, strange, wonderful place and I’d be crazy not to set a story there, as a fantasy writer.
stacey smith - I have two more Black London books contracted, as well as two novels that are as yet unnamed. I’m toying with the idea of a historical fantasy series for those. I love alternate history and I think it would be a lot of fun.

Hey, night owl Caitlin, thanks for being here today!

I liked Hellboy, too. Remembering continuity is like song lyrics for me, as well. Your book sounds cool. I’ve never read steampunk. I love your photography taste/thinking and would love to see it. Do you have any photos on your site (I’ll check after this)? I like being the photographer and model, too. Hoo hoo, slash and het are all good. Love Batman and Raymond Chandler. You hang out in cemeteries, too, eh?

What a great interview! I read some in the Nocturne series, and I am planning on checking out the Black London series. Do you have a favorite book that you have written and why? I RSVPed and I am a subscriber.

How many books do you plan to have (so far) for each of your series?

Ignore my last comment. I just saw the answer in your last responding post. Sorry. Wow, so we’re almost finished with the Nocturne City books.

Are you sad to be finished with your first series so soon? I know some authors get attached to their characters and are somewhat sadden when it comes time to end the series.

Of all the books that have been written, which is the one you wished you had written and why?

    Thanks.

What other book genres do you like aside from Fantasy? Does that genre also influence you when you write your book or do you read it for entertainment purposes only?

    5 & 7 - DONE :)

    Oh wow. Hello!
I have been meaning to check out your books!
    I have two questions:
    1. Do you think humor is something of an inborn talent or do you have to practice at it?
    2. Would you read Japanese comics/manga? There are some gothic styles of art in those comics.
    Thanks!
