Defiled by Evangeline Anderson
Despite a few little problems, Evangeline Anderson’s “Defiled” is one of the best works of erotica that I have ever read. This novella tells the tale of Elandra, the angelic millennial sacrifice to keep the peace between Heaven and Hell. Every thousand years, the angels throw one of their own down to Hell to be defiled by Osgiloth, Satan’s second-in-command, to make the demons happy and keep them in Hell. However, the year that Elandra is thrown over the edge, Osgiloth is busy on Earth with the Evil One, so his son, Raziel accepts the sacrifice. Except, Raziel is more compassionate than Elandra imagined and she finds herself drawn to her captor. Taking pity on the poor angel, Raziel agrees to take pleasure and pain from her but not defile her by filling her with his demon seed; this way, she can still return to Heaven. True to his word, Elandra is able to return undefiled, but she takes with her the odd black feather that Raziel gives her in case she ever needs him. In Heaven, she cannot stop thinking of the demon and the way he touched her and made her feel. Soon, they begin meeting in secret, but is their love enough to survive the ultimate test?
While “Defiled” was mainly about the physical relationship between Elandra and Raziel, it also had a solid storyline as the two opposite beings come to find that they genuinely love each other. Anderson’s writing has the right amount of description to help the reader travel to both Heaven and Hell. And she really makes the intimate scenes scorching.
Two problems I had with “Defiled” were the overuse of certain words during the sex scenes, and some references to Raziel’s heritage that seem to contradict one another. Somehow, demons cannot reproduce, yet Osgiloth always wanted an heir and was able to produce one with a non-demon, which also was made to sound like it was impossible.
All in all, “Defiled” was the perfect read for a cold fall day when you need a little warming up. Evangeline Anderson has created two characters I will not soon forget.
