Interview:
Hi Hannah!
Welcome to Bitten by Books, we are excited to have you here today!
I would like to thank you taking the time to join us for the question and answer session with our readers. It has been very interesting to get to know more about you and what makes you tick as a writer! Readers, if you haven’t done so already please stop by and get your copy of Hannah’s newest book If He’s Sinful.
BBB: What are the most challenging and the most rewarding aspects of writing?
HH: The most challenging is coming up with the ideas - not just the starting idea but enough of a one to carry a whole book and make for a great story. The most rewarding is that I can give people some enjoyment with my work. That and the fact that I don’t have to dress up and deal with the 9-5, commuter driving, and all that. If I want to sit at my desk in a paint-stained sweatshirt that says something rude, jeans, and fluffy slippers, I can.
BBB: If you could have one of your books made into a movie, which book and who would your dream cast be?
HH: Actually - I’d love them all made into movies and not just for the money factor. It’s be so cool to see the stories acted out. Anyway - any of the vampire short stories. As for the historicals - any of the ones with a cast of funky secndary characters. If He’s Sinful could be nice what with the ghosts and all. But for the Scottish ones - I think HIGHLAND WARRIOR for one. Lots of funky secondary characters and a heroine who can kick butt. For actors as the hero - Sean Bean, Clive Owen, Johnny Depp (isn’t that a given?) or Rufus Sewell. Actually - Sean or Clive would be better for a Highlander, I think. And,for the heroine - Sandra Bullock or someone like that.
BBB: What are your top 3 favorite paranormal books and movies?
HH:That’s impossible to answer. There are so many great paranormal books - I have dozens I read and reread. For movies - there’re are still so many and most of the good ones are series - I like the Narnia ones, and on TV - there’s Primevil, Fringe, and the like.
BBB: What character (s) in any of your books is most like you?
HH: There’s a piece of me in every heroine and a piece of my heart in every hero. I think that is true of all writers. We put a little of ourselves in the character we most identify with and fall a little in love with the character we chose for them to love. The sarcasm is definitely from me as is the fact that the heroines all tend to be on the short side - I’m short, so making them the same means I know their physical limitations and what they’d have trouble with.
BBB: What is the most ridiculous thing that you have thought about doing to any of your characters but never did?
HH: Too many of those to count especially when they are annoying me because they won’t do what I want them to. I am also a little too fond of slapstick comedy - not the Three Stooges kind, too extreme and constant, but definitely the occasional pratfall, even the rare pie in face type. And when one of my characters starts giving me trouble I do envision a pie in the face for him/her, or a face-down fall into a cow patty.
BBB: How do you keep track of your world building?
HH: Index cards and family lines. It’s really only good note-keeping as I am not making such an intricate world as say - Nalini Singh. My vampires are still dealing with the real world of their time period as are the psychics in IF HE’S WICKED, If He’s Sinful, and the coming IF HE’S WILD. It is just my characters and their family that are different, not their world; their intimate world not their physical world, if that makes sense.
BBB: What do you feel are the benefits of the new electronic readers such as Kindle 2 or Sony Digital Book Reader to the environment?
HH: I think they make things easier for people who like to read off a computer screen. I don’t. I will order an E-book if the book is intriguing and then print it out. I know there’s this whole - we’re better for the environment thing being pushed but, I’m sorry, they are no better, might even be worse. Books can be recycled in many ways, the paper reused. Factories can be made to be more environmentally safe, and trees can be farmed for paper. Many of the books are printed in the US thus the money needed to pay for the printing mostly stays in the country and Americans get jobs. (as do the people working the bookstores where the books must be sold) What’s in the readers and the computers will not biodegrade and a lot of it is toxic. Plus they are also all made in factories, mostly in China which has no environmental controls as yet, and the toxins needed to put together an electronic device will be released into the air, and they all use batteries - another toxic thing that isn’t biodegradeable. So, to be honest this new ‘we are so much better for the environment’ thing irritates me in many ways. Wish they would just stick with saying that they have great books to read so give them a try instead of the sudden urge to be holier-than-thou.
BBB: What impact do electronic readers create on the bottom line for authors in the end? Do you feel they have a negative impact or positive, or no impact at all that you can see?
HH: So far I have seen no impact. I think it’s going to take a long time for them to overtake the ‘I want to hold a book in my hand’ attitude many hard core readers have. They do allow for stories that the more conservative bookstores won’t carry and the print publishers aren’t ready to take a chance on or already have all they need of that fiction sub-type. They add to the variety available to the reader and that’s a very good thing. They will gain in market but since most of the book publishers have e-book sections selling their authors books, I can’t see why it makes a huge difference to me. It’s just added competition in an already very competitive field.
BBB: Can you tell us about your Wherelocke series and and the storyline that drives it?
HH: I had this idea about a psychic family, one where everyone has a gift of some kind, some strong, some weak. Then I had to find a time where they would have been able to move somewhat freely through society - past the time when people like them would have been labeled witches and killed yet with enough prejudice and fear left to warrant being secretive. So the Wherlockes and the other branch of the same family, the Vaughns, were born. Basically either the hero or the heroine will have a gift, and somehow it’s the gift or the trouble it has uncovered or caused, that brings them into contact with their soulmate. On top of whatever trouble they are in, whatever hang-ups they have, you now have the non-psychic partner having to come to terms with what the psychic one can do, and the fact that his/her entire family is that way.
BBB: What else do you currently have in the works? When can we expect your next book?
HH: I just sent in the manuscript for IF HE’S WILD - Alethea, the psychic, who has a vision that a man is going to die and goes to London to warn him, and Hartley - the hunky earl who has to accept her gift, her gifted family, and the fact that he’s in danger. Lots of intrigue. That will be out in June 2010. I am now working on another vampire tale for an anthology and that is about another MacNachton, still out there trying to save the lost members of their clan. The anthology will be out in the fall. After that I start on another Highlander tale - this one is about Sir Simon Innes who appeared in HIGHLAND WOLF and HIGHLAND SINNER. He finds himself locked in a battle to save the lovely(naturally), sassy, sometimes-pain-in-his-butt Isabeal Murray Armstrong from some serious charges that could get her hanged. That is due out in December 2010 and is called HIGHLAND PROTECTOR
BBB: Do you write books in your different series at the same time, or do you work on one, finish it, and then go on to the next?
HH: Usually I am working on one at a time, but the other is always brewing in my head. If I have an idea on it I feel needs to be put down immediately, I will stop and do that, but with my deadlines, I can’t really dance back and forth much.
BBB: Which authors works do you enjoy reading and do you have any other authors that you bounce ideas of?
HH: I am on a paranormal kick at the moment - Nalini Singh, Jessica Andersen, Christine Feehan, JR Ward, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Deidre Knight, Angela Knight, Lynn Viehl, Lora Leigh, and on the lighter side - Lynsay Sands and Katie MacAllister. There are more but those are the ones I can see in my TBR pile near my desk. As for authors I can bounce ideas off of - I belong to my local chapter of RWA and a romance writer’s group in RI, plus am close friends with Patricia Grasso and Leeann Burke and could call on any member of those two writers’ groups at any time and they would all be willing to help with a brainstorming session.
BBB: Where do you see the paranormal/urban fantasy genre headed? Can you see it slowing down in the near future, or do you think that the immediate future is pretty bright for it?
HH: I can see it settling - if that makes sense. Just as with any new trend in fiction it is bouncing all over the place at the moment. It will settle as the really good writers come to the top and trends are seen within the sales figures. Not every paranormal idea is going to garner the readers to keep it going. Considering the age of the new readers it is bringing into the fold of romance, I think it’s probably safe enough for a good, long time. I will admit, I do wish there were not so many done in first person; there seems to be a glut of that at the moment. I like first person if it’s funny or done in such a way that you are never left with any doubt about what the other important characters are about and that takes a lot of skill. Not all of the flood of first person paranormals coming out now have that skill and it sort of leaves me unsatisfied at the end of the story.
BBB: Which world do you like writing in best? The paranormal, historical or western?
HH: I like them all but have to admit that the paranormal one gives me a lot more freedom. The boundaries of the real world they live in are still there but things can be bent and twisted a lot more if there is some paranormal gift involved.
BBB: If you had the choice to become any paranormal creature which one would you choose? Why or why not?
HH: A shape-shifter, probably. Vampires? Drinking blood? Walking dead? Not so much. The shape-shifter would give one all those neat things like strength, speed, longevity, healing powers, and still the falling in love and having a family. Think that’s why I like the vampires that are a different species type tales. They still have the icky diet but are not the walking dead. But, wouldn’t really want to be one of those, either - they still have that blood diet thing going. Yuck.
BBB: Do you have any plans for book signings/ readings anytime soon? If so, where can our readers find you?
HH: For the next few months I don’t have anything planned - don’t like to travel in the winter. Starting in March I go to the NEC (New England Chapter of RWA) conference where’s there’s a signing, then to the RT Conference in Columbus, Ohio (which I think is in April), then the Rom-Con in Denver, CO in early July, then the Romance Writer’s of America National conference in Nashville, TN in late July, and wind it up with the NJ Romance Writer’s conference in NJ in October. There will be signings at all of those. Others made me arranged but you’ll have to check my website for dates.

Hi everyone. Amanda - You can pretty much start with whatever you want. Even though my books are callef a series the only connection in any of them is a familial one. I don’t do continuing plot lines.
Monica - Thank you for your kind words!
Ida - Sometimes I get a little sad as I had a lot of fun eith the characters and everything went well. Sometimes - even though I still love the characters and am pleased with the story I am glad to see it go out the door because I kept coming up with a hitch in my muse.
Gotta zip out for a bit as I have a doctor’s appointment at 2. Just a follow-up to the yearly stress test so it won’t be long. Be back soon.

Hi Hannah!!! Thanks for stopping by. Did you always want to be a writer, and did you do before your first book was published?

Hannah, I have always thought I liked the way you think because I enjoy your books so much, but your comments about e-readers were really great. That is exactly how I feel. I don’t agree they are green and part of the experience of reading is the feel and look of the book in my hands. Something tells me you know what I mean.

Wow, go away for a bit and boom.
Heather C. - I always liked writing but didn’t really consider trying to make a living at it until the early ’80s. My first book was published in 1988 - called Amber Flame and reissued by Leisure Books as His Bonny Bride about 2 years ago. I also sold Taste Of Fire(a western) to Zebra at the same time and they have reissued that a lot.
Kia JG - Thanks! I expected a little heat on that opinion.
Sandy G. - If I could pick a gift it would be healing. Certainly don’t have an urge to know the future or see bad things happening to people or ghosts.
[Reply]
Hi Hannah! I’m a huge fan of your books. I love to read the Scottish books set much earlier in time, like 1100 or 1200. Any plans on going further back in time?? I’m currently reading your new book, thank you for it. I have notations on calendar for you up coming books,so I don’t miss them. I also love to reread all your books.

Cyd J - Chocolate - unless it’s Reeses and then the 2 together.
Lisa D - In a way all my books are favorites of mine. But - if pressed to choose I guess I’d say HIGHLAND WARRIOR because I had so much fun with the hero and his family and IF HE’S SINFUL(honest!) again because I had so much fun with the family.
PattyB - Why thank you - I like them too. What I do is put in my heroes all I think is good in a man - including their little manly quirks. I also have spent my whole life in male dominated households(from brothers to sons) so got a lot of first-hand experience.
[Reply]
Debbie Haupt - Thanks! Glad you like them. Sales have been good so there will be more of the Wherlockes and their cousins the Vaughns.
Shirley - It is a series but there’s no real need to read it in order. My series are connected mostly by the families. Too often I picked up the 2nd or 3rd in a series that had a running plot and then couldn’t find the others so that I could catch up with what was going on. Decided not to do that myself. If any of the characters from the other books wanders through I identify him/her succinctly but there is never a plot-line tie.
Amanda J - The next Murray book will be out December 2010. It’s about Sir Simon Innes from Highland Wolf and Highland Sinner and he gets to deal with Isabeal Murray Armstrong.
DeanaH - I like to think it’s my voice, style, whatever. In the end most romances in whatever genre they’re in are similar. It’s the way the author puts the story together, her characters, and her voice that makes one different from another.

Figured out why I didn’t see all these questions piling up - I’d left it up on my computer and it wasn’t until I minimized it and wandered off that the stupid machine added all these questions. Sigh.
April - You are welcome. I like doing the vampires because it’s such a change - even though it’s still Highlanders and historical. It’s just that you can have them do so much and stretch the boundaries a little.
Phyllis C. - Glad to be here.
Amanda B. - I love Julie Garwood old ones and there are some others but I’d have to go digging through my shelves. It’s just that after spending a lot of time writing an historical I tend to like to read something different.
D. Miller - Thank you!
[Reply]
Robin - Hope you enjoy it!
Tawania - HI!! Okay - as for switching, it wasn’t a big one because they are still historicals. I’ve always been fascinated with the psychic world and have occasionally given some of my Highland ladies and gents a gift. What I wanted, however, was to do stories where those gifts played a much larger part. Had to find a time where they wouldn’t just drag my psychic character off to burn, hang, or drown them. Hence - Georgian. As for where I’d like to go? - well, I have been to Scotland but only for a short visit. I would like to go back(with lots of money so I can stay in nice hotels and have someone drive me around) and stay for at least a month. Even then I doubt I’d see all I wanted to.
SallyT - Thank you! I probably won’t ever go that far back in time but one should never say never.

Amanda B. - LOL! Thhis time I minimized it and popped it back up after a short time and the new questions showed up. For some reason if I leave it open on my screen the new questions never appear. It’s the gremlins in the computer.
Patsy Hagen - Thanks! It’s always great to hear that.
Raelena P. - Hope you enjoy the book! I am on a six months a book schedual and have to fit the vampire novella tale in there somewhere. It can get a little tight at times.

Hi Hannah!
Thanks for taking time to chat with us. I admit I haven’t read your works yet, but I’d like to ask you a question allthesame. What was the genre or subgenre you first started out writing? Were you inspired in starting to write by something particular you read?
Thank you!

Terri Q - Hope you will give them a try!
Raquel V-G - Well, I like bad movies - especially if they blow up a lot of things. But - ex. - I have all the Teenage Mutant Nija Turtle Movies. Also have an attic full of far too many boxes of yarn that I got for all the crochet projects I haven’t had time to do.
Brenda H. - I like writing both sizes pretty equally. However, being geared to write mostly the book size tale, a short story can be tricky and a lot of the editing done is just to cut it down to size.
Paula H.- I hope you’ll give them a try.
Vale - I started trying to write contemporaries but about the time I started to get what is called - “the good rejection”(they actually ask if they can see something else) I had veered to historicals. I have always loved history and found that I loved doing those.

Hi Hannah,
I’m looking forward to reading, “If He’s Sinful!” I hope you have a wonderful holiday season, and may your 2010 be the best yet!
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed your work over the years. The Scots are amazing, and I’m impressed you can slip into the paranormal. I mentally freak out when I think of doing such a thing, but I enjoy reading it as well. Sean Bean - definitely!

Hi - (I hope this isn’t a double post - my computer was acting up just as I sent the original comments & it didn’t seem like it went thru.)
I didn’t know Hannah also had some PNR stories. I’ll have to check those out. (I’m not much into reading historical romances.) And she also has a sort-of series with psychics? I’ll have to look at those as well.

Wow, did not realize till I stopped and looked how many books you have had out and I’ve read and loved about all of the( especially those of a paranormal kick). Going to go check out the ones under your other names (Sarah Dustin, Sandra Dustin, and Anna Jennet) as soon as I leave BBB.
Are the books that are in the “Wherlockes” series the ones that the title start with “If He’s”? How many planned for this series?
What book would you give everyone if you had an endless number of copies and why?(it doesn’t have to be one of your books)

Hi Hannah,
I was so excited to see you here. I am a long time fan and started with your highlander books, then your vampires, haven’t read your new series yet, but hope to remedy that soon. I think you writing has always had at least a small paranormal element and really enjoyed that about the Murrays, and really liked your take on the whole Vampire thing. Am glad to here about a new highlander novel, but sad to see we will have to wait until Dec 2010. BTW just found your blog the other day and have enjoyed it. Keep writing and I’ll keep reading!

Carrie D. - Thank you for the kind words. And - yes - I oftren snuck a psychic gift in my tales and the Murrays are riddled with them. This new late-Georgian series, however, has the psychic gift right up front and a part of what brought the two people together, or the plot. I also plan on getting into more exotic ones. Again - thank you.
CeCe G. -Hi to you, too, and thanks for stopping by.

Larena W - Compromised Hearst will be reissued by Kensington 11/2010 with a new cover. Since Kensington now has rights to all my books I am sure they will get around to reissuing Stolen Ecstasy before too much time has passed - with a new cover and, I strongly suspect, a new title. Thank you for all the kind words and so pleased you find enjoyment in my stories.
Amber H. - Hope you enjoy them and thank you.
And now I believe I will toddle off to bed but I will check back in the morning to see if anyone had any other questions. Night all and so pleased that so many of you stopped by.

Hi Hannah,
Thanks so much for dropping by! I think your books are great! I’ve read your Highland books during my Scots addiction and really loved them. It’s interesting that you’re writing a paranormal but I’ve always been interested in your name choices. Is there significance to Wherlocke and Vaughn? When you meet your characters for the first time, how do you know what to name them?

I like working at home for those reasons, too. I like writing stories to bring people enjoyment, too. Just finished watching Fringe, actually. I like slapstick, like a certain vampire falling fully clothed into a full bathtub. I like real books, too and recycle and print some e-stories, so I totally agree with your argument.
What is your favorite first-person paranormal writer, then?
Nice prizes.
Thanks for being here today with honest opinions! RSVPd for this. I’m putting If He’s Wicked/Sinful on my Wishlist. Thanks for making them easy to jump into (in case I don’t start with the first). 2. Hi Hannah!
Let me say that I really enjoyed your interview! I can see your point about the issue of ereaders and the environment. I don’t know if I agree yet, but it does give me something to think about before buying one. Those batteries and such have got to be recycle-able if they’re really gonna be saving any trees, etc.
-As for my questions, most writers say they don’t pick their titles, which is something that absolutely amazed me. Did you get to title these books in this series, or did the publisher title it?
-Is the next book in a series titled even before it comes out?

Hi Hannah,
Given the genres in which you write, I’d love to know what you think: is there room for Weird West romances on the market? I’m a fan of space westerns (eg. Firefly) and fantasy westerns (eg. Territory). If there is a market for the weird western in romance — would you consider writing one?

Biki - Well, with the Wherlocke name I purposely hunted down a real name that had a paranormal feel to it and that name - so close to Warlock tickled me. The Vaughn name is plain Welsh as the family has a strong tie to Wales.
Eva S. - Thank you! Hope you enjoy the new series.
R.E.B. - Obviously we are soul sisters. As for my fav 1st-person paranormal writer? - Katie MacAllister. She can be fall on the floor funny plus she makes all the other characters clear to see despite using only one person’s POV.
Ruby E. - Yeah, I like that cover too. And - no - I have no input on the covers except to send in a description of the main characters, sometimes suggest a scene.
[Reply]
Dovile P. - http://www.kensingtonbooks.com would have my books for sale and undoubtedly list which ones were available in E-book format. Also Amazon must make note of it, too, as they have their own e-reader and want to push that. Saw a bunch of books I know are in pb advertised on there in ‘kindle format’. As for the last e-book I got - can’t recall so it obviously was one of those that did not stick. I do have a large TBR pile I collected up at all the conferences I went to of the print version of a number of e-books. I do go scrolling through the various e-book pubs to see what’s new on the paranormal front - Samhain, E’s Cave, etc.
Stacey S. - I suspect it’s hard to grab it because of whatever my webmistress did. Can you sbatch it off my FB profile? All she did was put a clip-art frame around it. It was not even one from a fancy computer program.
Alana A. - I probably wouldn’t try to write one(never say never) but I can’t see why a good one wouldn’t sell. It’s a fairly common theme(or used to be) amongst sci-fi books - the Space Cowboy and all that.

I requested friendship on facebook
I have read most of your books and look forward to reading the paranormal series. I am into the paranormal as many of my friends are. J.R. Ward is another good author who writes just about vampires with a paranormal storyline. I will have to check out your new book.”If he’s sinful” I really enjoyed your Highland Wolf book because it was completely different from the others. Some of the highland stories ,even by other authors, can start to look alike. This one had character and was very different with a lot of heart. Thanks for a great read.
[Reply]
Lesley C. - Well, I can’t name an exact book but I’d like to be able to write like Christine Feehan or J.R.Ward - all that delicious darkness. Just can’t seem to pull that sort of thing out of myself.
Angela C - I loved History - had planned to teach it or English but got married before I could finish the degree - so historicals were a good fit. I also tend to think of story ideas and plots in terms of two people - a man and a woman - so romance was also a good fit. And, when I started writing I was a stay-at-home Mom and would write when the boys were in school.
Summer B. - You’re welcome and thank you for the kind words. Hope you enjoy IF HE’S SINFUL
