Posted under Chat, Contests, Interviews, Site News, Uncategorized by Site Hostess on Wednesday 9 December 2009 at 12:41 pm

A big welcome to our readers today! Be sure to read to the end of the interview to find out how to WIN the fabulous prizes being offered up.

PLEASE NOTE: This is not a fixed time event, the post just goes live at 12:00 pm Central. You can stop by any time during the day or evening and leave your questions and chat.

PLEASE KEEP SPOILERS TO A MINIMUM. Not all of the readers today have read Kathryn’s books.

Interview:

Hi Kathryn!

Welcome to Bitten by Books, we are excited to have you here today!

I would like to thank you taking the time to join us for the question and answer session with our readers. It has been very interesting to get to know more about you and what makes you tick as a writer! Readers, if you haven’t done so already please stop by and get your copy of Kathryn’s newest book Dark Side of Dawn.

BBB: What are the most challenging and the most rewarding aspects of writing?

KS: Hmmm. The most challenging is sometimes coming up with a really fresh idea. We all have our favorite plots and sometimes it’s really difficult to make them different. Also, it’s a tremendous challenge to actually write on occasion! There are days when I’d rather poke myself in the eye with a fork than work! The most rewarding has to be seeing smiley faces on my manuscript pages, drawn by my editor, and letters from readers telling me they enjoy my work.

BBB: If you could have one of your books made into a movie, which book and who would your dream cast be?

KS: Probably Before I Wake. I’d cast Liv Tyler as Dawn and a younger Keanu Reeves as Noah.

BBB: What are your top 3 favorite paranormal books and movies?

KS: That’s hard! Okay, movies are: Constantine, Supernatural (cheating, that’s TV not a movie!) and Lost Boys. Books: Mediator by Meg Cabot (YA), The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman and, Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews. Those are the first that come to mind.

BBB: What character (s) in any of your books is most like you?

KS: People seem to think it’s Dawn from the Nightmare Chronicles. I admit she and I do have a lot in common. But I think I’m more like some of my heroes! One character I really felt connected to is Reign from Let the Night Begin. There was just something about him that made it easy for me to know what he was all about.

BBB: What is the most ridiculous thing that you have thought about doing to any of your characters but never did?

KS: Just one? There’s been so many! I have a slightly black and warped sense of humor at times, so I’ve wanted to do some pretty odd things with my people. I think the idea of giving my vampires wings crossed my mind. I’m glad I didn’t.

BBB: How do you keep track of your world building?

KS: I have notebooks and binders that I write in. I also use notebook software to keep it all in one spot on my computer.

BBB: What do you feel are the benefits of the new electronic readers such as Kindle 2 or Sony Digital Book Reader to the environment?

KS: First of all, they’re great for the environment in that they save trees. I just hope all that electronic stuff is reusable in some way. People who are embarrassed by romance covers don’t have to worry about it with an e-reader. It’s also instant gratification, isn’t it. I’m not sure that’s such a great thing. We’re already used to getting things quickly.

BBB: What impact do electronic readers create on the bottom line for authors in the end? Do you feel they have a negative impact or positive, or no impact at all that you can see?

KS: I’m not sure. Really, we just want to sell books, so I don’t care what format they’re in. That said, there’s the piracy issue. Before e-readers, it was a lot of work to pirate a book, now it’s nothing. And it drives me nuts that people don’t seem to think there’s anything wrong with uploading these books to sharing sites. So, in terms of the book buyer and author relationship, it’s fabulous! But the piracy issue has done a lot to kill my enthusiasm for electronic readers.

BBB: Can you tell us about your Nightmare Chronicle series and and the storyline that drives it?

KS: Sure! The Nightmare Chronicles is about Dawn Riley, who is the half-human daughter of the god of dreams. In the first book she starts to come to terms with who and what she is and has to take on a big bad to save Noah, who starts out a crush and becomes her boyfriend. In the second book, Dark Side of Dawn, Dawn discovers even more about her abilities and what’s expected of her. She also has to accept that people in her father’s world don’t trust her and would like to see her go away — permanently. There’s also another big bad — two, actually, one human and one from the dream realm. And in the background of the books is the ongoing storyline involving her mother and how she manages to remain in the dream world.

BBB: What else do you currently have in the works? When can we expect your next book?

KS: I’m currently working on a steampunk Young Adult novel for Harlequin Teen under the name Kady Cross. It’s about 5 ‘more than human’ teens who are sort of a neo-Victorian superhero group. It’s been a lot of fun and a challenge to write. Then I’m going to write a new historical. The second book in my Victorian soap opera comes out in June of 2010, I believe. It’s called When Marrying a Scoundrel. The steampunk won’t be out until 2011.

BBB: Do you write books in your different series at the same time, or do you work on one, finish it, and then go on to the next?

KS: I prefer to finish one book before moving on to the next. I really don’t trust my brain to keep two story lines straight at the same time. That’s just the way it works for me. If I don’t force myself to finish a project there’s always the chance I’ll fall in love with something else.

BBB: Which authors works do you enjoy reading and do you have any other authors that you bounce ideas of?

KS: I’ll limit myself to five. :-) I really enjoy Melissa Marr’s work. I like Colleen Gleason and Jenna Petersen and I worship Neil Gaiman. I also really enjoy Kelley Armstrong. As for brainstorming buddies, those are Jenna Petersen, Colleen Gleason, Sharie Kohler and sometimes Adele Ashworth — who ever will listen!

BBB: Where do you see the paranormal/urban fantasy genre headed? Can you see it slowing down in the near future, or do you think that the immediate future is pretty bright for it?

KS: I hope it doesn’t slow down! I think it will level off. I think it has to an degree already. But, what’s so exciting about fiction these days is that readers are hungry for different things. It’s a wonderful time to be a writer. I honestly feel like I could write some of these books that have been in my head for years and find a home for them, when that wouldn’t have been possible even four or five years ago. So, to answer your question, I think the future is looking pretty bright right now.

BBB: From One Smith to another, Do you ever get looked at with that ‘yeah right’ look when saying your surname is smith? :)

KS: Yes! And since I always have to spell my first name for them, they seem to find the ‘Smith’ part amusing because it’s so simple.

BBB: If you had the choice to become any paranormal creature which one would you choose? Why or why not?

KS: I wouldn’t mind being a witch. I have been called one on occasion, but unfortunately it doesn’t seem to stick. :-) Witches are good because you don’t have to worry about getting furry or avoiding sunlight. Plus, they can do some pretty cool stuff. I have a thing about immortality. I’m not sure I’d take it if it were offered to me. I’d want to have people with me. Losing everyone you love just sucks. And then to do it for centuries! Nope, not for me. Second choice would probably be an angel, because I look good in wings. Also, I really like the whole idea of fallen angels.

BBB: Do you have any plans for book signings/ readings anytime soon? If so, where can our readers find you?

KS: I think I might do a couple of local signings before Christmas, but it will depend on my schedule. And I’m booked to be at the NEC RWA conference this coming spring. I’m on deadline until April 1st so I’m not really scheduling a lot. I am going to be at Lady Jane’s Salon at Madame X in NYC on January 4th 2010. Not sure what book I’ll read from, but I’d love to meet some readers if they want to come see me!

    Hi Kathryn,

Just wanted to stop by and thank you for all the books you have written. Out of all the authors I have read over the years you rate up in the top 10 of them for authors I would sell my first born in order to get their newest book…lol.
I am sure you will have plenty of questions today so the only one I have for you is…
    How are you today?

Thanks again for allowing this mother of 5 the get away she really needs. At least with books I can get away and still be here for my family.

    Have a great day!

Hi Ms. Smith, I was wondering what made you decide to write the Nightmare series. I have two sisters who have night terrors sometimes and was wondering if you have them yourself. Also your new Y/A series sounds really interesting, was it hard to transition to Y/A.

Hey Kathryn! Fun Q an A! I love that your editor draws smiley faces on your manuscript. That would make me feel like my teacher really likes my work! A++++

And I think you’re right about the paranormal genre - it’s definitely here to stay but it’s here for the writers who are serious about it - not bandwagon jumpers. There will always be a market for it - it’s just that popular - like mystery and sci fi. Your steam punk series sounds very cool as well - that’s one sub-genre that seems to be taking off in the romance world.

    cheers and happy holidays! ;)

    Hi Kathryn

Is it difficult to switch back and forth between writting different series? Do you sometimes just want to write a sequel to the book you just finished and have to get back into the mood for something different?

Hi everyone! First of all, thanks so much to Bitten by Books for hosting me today. And thanks to all who have posted so far for coming by!

Okay, I’ll try to answer questions:

Shirley — Hi, doll! Noah is a complex boy with a really harsh childhood. If the series continues I do have plans for him to confront his father, and not in the way ‘normal’ people generally do these things. ;-) And thank you, I think my halo’s a little tarnished, though.

Helen — Thanks so much for sticking with me through the years! To answer your question, I’m doing pretty good, thanks! :-)

Rebecca — I’ve had a lot of nightmares. A LOT. I’ve also always been interested in dreams. My grandmother apparently used to have prophetic dreams and everyone in my family (the women anyway) have always had freaky dreams. I used to do a lot of lucid dreaming, though not so much anymore. I’ve always been interested in dreams, so the idea of Dawn came from that. Sorry to hear your sisters have terrors — those are not pleasant by any stretch.

And no, it wasn’t hard to transition to YA. I try to write the same for both audiences, but in the ‘heads’ of appropriately aged characters. Does that make sense?

Dee — I used to live in the TO area — up by Canada’s Wonderland! My husband and I talk about getting back there someday, but I’m not sure when it will happen. Rest assured if it every does, I’ll post about it!

Cyd — My favorite book to write was Before I Wake, followed by Let the Night Begin and my first book, Elusive Passion.

Rena — Inspiration comes from all over the place — movies, books, songs… A snippet in a research book. Sometimes things just hit me, like an idea I had the other day and don’t know if anything will ever come of it, but don’t want to mention it just in case. lol.

Elaine — Dawn: impulsive, loyal, powerful. Noah: strong, imaginative, secretive.

Hey, Jojo! Thanks for stopping by! Here’s to more paranormals for years to come!

Jennifer L — I really wish I’d written Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. LOL! I’m joking. I really wish I’d written Interview With the Vampire.

Anna — Hope you like the books! My husband and I have some of our own traditions for the holidays. Growing up in Canada, we’re used to the 26th of Dec being Boxing Day — and a holiday. We also have to watch The Muppets’ Christmas Carol and Nightmare Before Christmas every year. On Christmas Eve we’re allowed to open one present to play with that night, so usually it’s a game or a movie. And I always make my mother’s ‘apple crumb pudding’ for dessert.

Sandy, sometimes it is hard to shift back and forth, especially if I’m in the groove for one particular thing. I know a lot of authors won’t read the genre they write when they’re working, but for me it helps keep me in the right head space. So, when I write YA I read YA and when I write historical or paranormal, I read from those genres. Keeps me focused. Otherwise, I’d be wanting to write whatever I was reading!

Jeanette, I have very little say in what goes on my covers, but Avon does ask for my input, and on occasion they’ve used a particular pose I sent them. They have a fabulous art dept, so I leave it to them to decide how the books look!

Terri, I have lots of favorite authors! A few are: Neil Gaiman, Laura Lee Guhrke, Charlaine Harris, Melissa Marr. Thanks for reading the books!

Amanda, do you mean a favorite of my own? I don’t, not really. But if I had to pick a favorite book in general the first thing that comes to mind is Persuasion by Jane Austen. I guess that answers both your questions!

    Thanks, Jo!

Jackie, as I write this I have no idea what’s going to happen with the Nightmare Chronicles. If this new one performs well then I hope Avon will want more of them. Rest assured, that if Avon wants them I’ll write them! As it stands, if there are more, I can’t see it being before 2011. Sorry!

Valorie — No plans for a new Brotherhood book. That series pretty much ended, wrapped up in a neat little package. :-) However, that doesn’t mean that I won’t be doing more paranormal in the future. I needed a break from it and am working on some ’straight’ historicals, but now I feel the urge to maybe write some more. We’ll see what happens.

Thanks, Cece — It’s good to be here.

Raelena, thanks so much. The steampunk world is super fun to write in. I can write a book very quickly — about six weeks. That leaves me pretty drained at the end, so I like to have at least 2-3 months. Ideally you need to leave extra time for revisions and all the other things that come along with publishing. In a perfect world I’d write a book every four to five months. Sometimes life gets in the way, though.

Hi, Belinda! Hope you enjoy the books when you get to them. :-)

    Hi Kathryn,
I’m so glad that you’re here with us today. I haven’t had a chance to read your new series yet, but I can’t wait to get it. I love your brotherhood of the Blood series. The first book I ever read of yours was Night of the Huntress, and I fell in love with Bishop and Marika’s story. I have been hooked ever since.
Do you plan on writing anymore Vampire novels?
Did you always want to be a writer, and what was the first novel you ever wrote?

    Hi Kathryn!
Thanks for taking time to answer to our questions! I admit I didn’t know about your works, but they sure seem varied and interesting.
    I’d like to ask you:
    - you mentioned that some of your books feature vampires. Which series is it exactly?
    - your Nightmare Chronicles feature the god of dreams, so, do you have a special interest in mithology? If yes, is there a particular mithology you like best?
    Thanks!

hey kathryn. thanks for taking the time to answer all of our questions. my question for you is about the time when you first started writing… did you ever have doubts concerning your ability to do it? in other words, did you ever question if you had what it took to do as good a job as you wanted to do? i haven’t had the opportunity to read your books yet, however, i am very interested based on what i read above, so please don’t take this question the wrong way. it isn’t about my opinion of your work, simply something i’m always curious about with published authors.

What are the chances of perhaps a short story or something that would explore present-day them more? Maybe a Christmas story or something? Please?

Hi, KatieD! Thanks so much for your kind words. I don’t have a routine — not really. Usually I get up, check email while having breakfast and then make myself work!

Tawnania, thank you! Yes I always wanted to be a writer. I think I made that decision when I was 8. My first book was about a rock band that sounded suspiciously like Duran Duran. I was 12. I hope to write more vamps or paranormal romances someday. Cross your fingers for me!If I do more, they will probably be contemporary in setting.

Vale, it’s my Brotherhood of the Blood series that features vampires. And if I had to pick a mythology that I love best, it’s probably Greek, followed by Christian Biblical lore. Those stories are timeless and so inspiring.

Kate T, no offense taken! I hope if you decided to read a few of my books you like ‘em! I still doubt my ability to write with every book! lol. Usually right around the halfway mark I decide the book is garbage. And of course, it only takes a few bad reviews on the wrong day to make you think you should have been a plumber.

Beverly, I’m not sure how I’d pitch my books to you! I’m horrible at self-selling. I’d probably ask if you like vampires or historicals and say that my books combine the best of both genres! Of course, then I’d think I sounded arrogant! :-) Usually when I finish a book my hubby and I will go out to dinner, have a couple of cocktails. And I’ll spend the next couple of days being lazy. Nothing exciting!

Calliope, I just might do that! Right now I don’t have a story idea for them, but I’ll think about it and see what I can come up with. Maybe it will be an online exclusive! :-)

Heather, the Nightmare Chronicles came from my love of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman series and studying Greek mythology. I thought, what if Morpheus had a child with a mortal? It went from there.

Biki, the tattoo is nicer than I thought it would be! I picture the guy on the cover as Verek, who is tremendously hot. lol. The Avon art dept did a fabulous job on that cover. Yes, I do have a tattoo — a sun symbol on my right shoulder.

Deana, I think what set my historical vampires apart was the fact that they were historical, and that I gave them a really different origin. My Nightmare books are set apart by the fact that they are romantic urban fantasy without vampires, witches, demons or werewolves.

Michelle, it depends on my mood. I love urban fantasy, historical and Young Adult. I think my favorite to just read for fun is YA.

Thanks, Amber! Hope you like them!

Lisa, if I had an unlimited number of my own books it would be Before I Wake. If I gave out someone else’s it would be Persuasion by Jane Austen. It’s one of my all time favorite plots — reunited lovers.

Thanks, Barb! Hope you enjoy The Nightmare Chronicles!

Paula, Keanu is definitely one of my favorites. I love that he’s so Canadian even though he wasn’t born there. Gotta love a boy that plays hockey!

Pam, I’m contracted for 2 steampunk books and my editor and I have discussed a third. Yes, it will be a series.

Bella, the steampunk I mention above is a YA for Harlequin Teen. The first 2 books will be out under the name Kady Cross in 2011.

Donna, I have ideas for a third book at least. After that, if all goes well I’d like to write more about Dawn, but some of the other characters as well. I’d love to give Verek a book.

Stacey, I have no idea. I’m hoping these first two will have done well enough that I will be asked to write a 3rd.

Now, it’s almost midnight here, so I hope you all will excuse me if I don’t post again tonight, but I will check in tomorrow to see if I missed anyone! Thanks so much for all your questions and enthusiasm about The Nightmare Chronicles and The Brotherhood of the Blood.

Black and warped sense of humor: my cup of tea. I like steampunk like in the Wild Wild West TV show. Yay, Kelley Armstrong (she’s nice in person, too). I also have a simple last name that I constantly have to spell for people. I’ve found that many ‘intuitives’ (myself included) have a lot of really weird nightmares. I like Greek myths, too.

Hi Ruby! My inspiration comes from all over. Sometimes it will be a song, or a line from a movie or TV show. Sometimes I’ll be researching something else and I’ll stumble over a bit of info that makes me think of something new. It’s wonderful, but annoying at times because I don’t have time to write them all!

Dovile, I am a paper and glue snob. I think it has to do with staring at a screen all day to work, I don’t want to do that to read. Plus, you shouldn’t take a reader in the tub! lol. That said though, I do want to try one. The thing that appeals to me about a Kindle is that I can download books that may not be available in paper format anymore! And I’m really into the whole instant gratification thing. lol.

Hi REB — thanks for the warm welcome.

Thanks, Cassandra! I wanted to make Dawn ‘real’. Also, she’s of classical descent, right? Based on how the Greeks seem to like women to look I figured she couldn’t be thin and considered goddess-like. She has to be curvy and tall and strong. And I do like how Noah loves her for it. That part of him is based on my husband, who likes soft, curvy women. I’m a fluffy girl and he never complains (he’s like 6ft and 180lbs), though we’re both trying to get healthier now. That’s probably more info than you wanted! lol.

Carol, I don’t get to many conventions, I’m sorry to say. Usually I’m behind the curve and don’t know about them until it’s too late. I will be at the New England RWA’s conference this spring near Boston. And I hope to get to a couple others, like RWA National in Nashville. Do you have any you’d suggest?

Hmm, Heidi. 3 words to describe my feelings for the Brotherhood series… Sexy, Emotional and action-packed. I know that’s technically 4 words, but you won’t judge me harshly for that, will you? :-)

I use OneNote by Microsoft. It’s really helped me organize research, character info, etc all into one place. I’ve heard Mac users swear by Scrivener, which I hear is coming out for the PC as well.

Thank you all for coming by! Hopefully you’ll love Dark Side of Dawn and I’ll get to write more books about Dawn, Noah and the Dream Realm. :-)

    Hugs
    Kathryn

Kathryn, I recommend Dragon*Con, but I have heard good things about some of the other cons, as well.

    Hi Kathryn,
I’m sad to say I’ve not read one of your books before. I hope to change that soon. My question is this: Do you plan on writing in any other genre than paranormal. I know you mentioned a YA book, but anything in the works in either historical or contemporary genres? sorry if this question has been asked before.
