Police sergeant Brogan O’Halloran answers a call to investigate trespassers in the small English village of Oak Glen. It’s All Hallow’s Eve so Brogan figures the trespassers are nothing more than a group of kids out looking for a good laugh in the village’s abandoned castle. Brogan is surprised to find the trespasser is a grown woman, Laura Moonwind, who just happens to be a witch and who claims ancestral ownership of the castle. Before he and Laura can exit the building, however, the castle becomes sentient and traps the twosome within its walls. They are bombarded by magical events and must weather the mystical storm before they can make an escape.

The idea behind this story is both intriguing and creative. Though this is an erotic tale - and the eroticism levels are very high - there story itself is at times confusing. Some leaps of logic taken by Brogan and Laura don’t entirely make sense and there isn’t enough to explain the connections between several of the events. The connection is present, though entirely too vague for my preferences. Additionally, some of the sex scenes required me to stop and explain the positions aloud to myself before I understood what was being described in the book, which greatly reduced my enjoyment of the story.

The most compelling aspect of the story, however, is in Brogan and Laura’s connection to one another. Ms. Chatterly did a wonderful job of evincing a strong and immediate emotional connection between the protagonists. Though the story seemed to get away from itself, there was no question that the two were soul-mates. Another plus was how the notion of soul-mates was addressed. In many stories of late, soul-mates are fated and there’s a great to-do about how it came to be and why it was so integral to the lovers’ existence. For Every Witch Way But Loose, the idea of soul-mates just was. It wasn’t overdone at all, which increased the believability of their relationship greatly.

Because of the solid delivery of the romance, I am giving this one three tombstones instead of my initial impression, which was two and a half. There was some mention about the product of their relationship being great changes and power in the future. I am curious to see if that story gets told, as I would like to see how it would play out.
