****½

Annabelle “Belle” Oakley is big, she’s bad, and because of her recent mission for the Interstellar Coalition Enforcement, she’s covered in pheromones that affect her as much as those around her. Needing a quick fix, she stops at a bar in Prima Vega where she meets a large Cajun who somehow makes her feel petite and feminine and wanted. He also makes her feel pregnant after only one night.

Belle is, naturally, excited and nervous about being a mother, but she knows her job can’t stand still while she tries to cope with it. She and Tucker, a wolf she rescued seven years ago, continue on their mission, leaving the strange Cajun behind. What Belle doesn’t know is that forces are at work against her and this mission is anything but what it seems.

“Belle Starr” by Belinda McBride was a surprisingly romantic trek across galaxies that managed to be sexy, fierce, and humorous. The world-building was amazing, complex in its whole but simplified so that the reader didn’t get lost. Not only were there different species, but planets, galaxies, and abilities that the author kept organized with a sharp eye that I appreciate more than she could ever know. Too often the details become muddied while in a galaxy far, far away.

The disclaimer at the beginning of the story started me off on the wrong foot. I had the horrible feeling that sex would reign supreme and the plot would be an afterthought. “Belle Starr” was anything but what I expected. Armand is a complicated character whose past was handled rather creatively. Instead of dumping background information on the reader, we were treated with emotional flashbacks spread throughout the story, letting us know just enough information to keep us guessing. Because of him and Belle’s no holds-barred attitude, I give this story 4.5 tombstones. I’ll be looking for more work by this author, you can be sure.
