Apple Crisp by Kate Hill

In this erotic fairytale, Cass is the human gardener responsible for the magical trees and plants at the Fairy Museum. He particularly loves the trees which are sprites who have transcended into tree-shapeshifters. Once Cass finally sees the human form of the tree with the best tasting apples, his and Fidel’s longing gazes lead to sexual satisfaction. Tranquility in the garden is shattered as transcendent tree sprites are being gruesomely murdered. When a group of paranormals join forces to find the killer, they discover the key to overcoming evil.
This novella is filled with magical characters that are well described and truly unique, but there are just too many to comfortably fit into this short tale. The story is simply told, though bursting at the seams with magical dusts, powers, rituals and spells. The dialogue is mostly formal, which also adds to its fairytale quality, but the occasional modern phrase disrupts the fairytale feeling Ms. Hill so carefully creates. Ms. Hill’s wonderful imagination and creativity make this story a treat to read.
