Gay Elves always make a great basis for a story (at least in this reader’s eyes). Magic and mystery are not far behind, and Kate Hill deftly combines these three in her novella, “Blueberry Muffins.”

Dylan, a rebel elf, left the Wicked Wild and moved to Grimton City after a disastrous affair. He now runs a shelter for other magical people. Since his work is his life, he lives above his shelter with his roommate, the dancer Antjuan. When one of his volunteers is accused of robbery, Dylan is taken into custody by the sexy Joel. Through the power of thought-touch, Joel soon discovers his error and asks for Dylan’s help in on his investigation into the thefts of some elfin coins. Joel believes the thief is following the legend of The Puzzle, an old elfin tale about oddly shaped coins that when combined will give the holder the power of the elves. Dylan agrees to help, and soon the two are more than just investigative partners.

“Blueberry Muffins” is a fun story with a good mix of plot, romance, and sex. I do wish the mystery aspect was a little more developed, but in a short novella, something must be sacrificed. What Hill did not sacrifice was the build-up of the relationship between Dylan and Joel. While it seemed to move a little fast at first, the rest was realistic and sweet (even when it was hot and sexy). Dylan and Joel were both very likeable characters, although I would like to have learned more of Joel’s backstory and from where his powers came.

The biggest problem I had with “Blueberry Muffins” is a purely superficial one – the title. Yes, Hill writes a tender and steamy scene involving blueberries (and then later muffins), but it was not a main point of the plot. To me, something involving the crime Joel was investigating would have been much more apropos. However, the title does not detract at all from the enjoyment of the fun story that Kate Hill has written.
