Release Party, Chat and Contest With Author Shiloh Walker

Posted under Chat, Contests, Guest Bloggers, Site News by Site Hostess on Wednesday 2 December 2009 at 12:37 pm

RSVP “Make yourself at home,” she drawled. She left the carry on by the door and shut it, turning the lock on the doorknob and then the deadbolt.

“Those locks suck,” Duke said, flicking a glance at her door.

“I’ll make a note of it.” Crossing her arms over her chest, she glared at him. “Whatever you need me to explain, fine. Ask away so I can explain and get your ass out of my home.”

A grin curled his lips. “Ana, you’re swearing. What’s got you so pissed?”

Yeah, Ana was pissed off, all right. You see, she’s just found her own life. The last thing she wanted was for Duke to show up like this.

Okay, maybe it wasn’t the last she wanted…maybe she dreamed of him. A lot. But he didn’t want to know about those dreams and she didn’t want to humiliate herself by talking about them. Having Duke show up in Anchorage, Alaska was exactly the last thing Ana expected.

It was also exactly what she needed. Exactly what he needed. They needed each other. I knew this the minute they first came to together on the page in Hunting the Hunter, an earlier story.

Ana did the wrong thing for the right reasons—if doing the wrong thing can ever be for the wrong reasons. She had a younger brother to protect and she knew how to ensure her brother’s safety. It came at a cost, though, to her, and to Duke. Duke understands about protecting people and if it was anybody other Ana, he might even be able to just let it go. But he can’t let go with Ana. He can’t get her out of his mind, and he can’t get her out of his heart, his dreams.

It’s been that way with these two from the first, so it’s not really a surprise that this story took on a life of its own. Ana can’t get past what she’s done in her past and she doesn’t think anybody else can, either. Duke doesn’t see it that way, and once he finally understands why he can’t get her out of his head, or his heart, he knows he’s not going to be happy without her in his life.

These two characters really stayed with me. I smile thinking about them, even now. I don’t know why these two stand out so much, but they do. Maybe it’s how both of them are so determined to ‘find’ something, and what they needed to find, they had all along…each other. Maybe it’s the hidden strength I discovered in Ana’s character. And maybe it’s the fact that I just kind of fell in love with the setting… ;)

So tell me…what characters have really stayed with you? Why?

Carol M: Yes…characters from fiction. Although if nonfiction characters stick with you… :o) For fun, I read anything that appeals to me. I tend to read romance and urban fantasy the most, but I love SF and fantasy. Sometimes I like horror, but not often. Just depends on my book.

Jennifer L: I’d have to say ENDURANCE by SL Viehl. I think.

    Hi Shiloh, fabbbb post!

Oh, interesting question. Most recently it would have to be Sookie — I love her sassyness and wish I could be more like her.

But ones that have stayed with me from long ago are all of the ‘original works’ of Virgina Andrews. Flowers in The Attic, Ruby, Heaven etc.. Her characters really got under my skin and became apart of me. They always beat the evil people trying to get them down, and they were evil. They also always found love in the most extraordinary circumstances — sometimes it was forbidden and dangerous for them to fall in love with said person. I still have every one of those books and go back to them from time to time. Not to keen on the ghost writer writing under her name. I find that very offensive, actually. It’s not her, and should not present itself as being penned by her.

I voted in the poll — Sookie and Riley.

Hi Shiloh, thank you for being here today.

Two characters that have stuck with me ever since I read the book were Persephone/Lina and Hades in The Goddess of Spring by P.C. Cast. I loved the interaction between the two and also the sadness and loneliness of Hades throughout the book left an impression upon me. Oh and can’t forget the physical descriptions of Hades (hot, hot, hot).

    Hi Shiloh!
I am so happy to see you up here. I just ordered your book, and I know its going to be awesome. I can’t wait until it comes. The two characters that stay with me the most is… thats hard I have two couples who stay with me. Leandra and Mike and Malachi and Kelsey. Leandra and Mike, because they fell in love even after what she had done to him, he didn’t hold it against her and he was there for her. Malachi and Kelsey because I thought it was so romantic, how he was dreaming about her for centuries before he even knew who she was. I really enjoyed both of there stories, and all of your other Hunter’s novels. I’m wishing you much continued success. :)

Terri W: Thank you…and I’m not really sure. Just depends on how many characters keep popping out, demanding a story.

Tina J: I’ve been lucky with covers. Most of mine have been awesome. I do have some favorites, though. The one for Hunter’s Need, and then the one for my romantic suspense FRAGILE are two of my faves.

Sharon K: Thank you! The signing went fine… I had some people come so that’s a plus. The hardest book to write? Probably Hunter’s Fall, which I’m finishing up right now. As to why-the characters. too complicated to explain but the characters are killing me.

Michelle B: Eek. Hard question-I don’t know. Sometimes dark, sometimes weird. Romantic.

Cyd J: Candy Houses, the first in a fairy tale series I’m writing for one of my epubs, Samhain Publishing.

Angela C: Eh, I’m a bad person to ask about Twilight. I haven’t read the books or seen the movie so I’m not much of a judge. it does seem to be introducing younger people to the joys of reading and that’s always good. Does the craze make it harder to write? Not for me. I was writing vamps and shifters before the craze really hit, established my own world so the twilight craze doesn’t really have much effect on me, as far as writing.

Kate Leger: I’m on a re-read of the IN DEATH books by JD Robb…next is CONSPIRACY IN DEATH.

Tawania: Nice to see you! Hope you enjoy Hunter’s Need.

Shiloh Welcome and congratulations on release of “Hunters Need”.
#2 Shiloh asks:So tell me…what characters have really stayed with you? Why?
Leandra and Michael Prescott have been the 2 characters that have really stayed with me. The reason why is because their story is the one that I read first in the series and really liked the struggle for Leandra to be accepted by the Hunters and the fact that Michael could look past the “warrior” and see the “woman”….
I am now impatiently awaiting the story about Captain Laisyn Caar and Xan that was previewed at the end of “Hunter’s Need” in the new book “Veil of Shadows”, these 2 promise to be my next favorite character….

RSVP’d and voted in the Poll. Will hit the daily book chat….

Hi Shiloh! Thanks for taking time to be here:o) Hmmm a character or characters that have stayed with me would have to be Joanne Baldwin and David from Rachel Caine’s Weather Warden series. They have this forbidden love that is so intense and when things seem like they are going right something horrible happens. Its an emotional roller coaster romance! I was wondering what book of yours would you recommend to a reader *wink, wink* who was interested in reading your books for the first time? Congrats on the new book:o)

Limecello: Hey! Want some wine? ;o) I’m not sure how many more Hunter books there will be…just depends. I’m working on a romantic suspense trilogy right now, so I’ll figure out the next Hunter thing once I’m done with this.

HeatherC: Bunnicula. ;o) Or maybe my mom’s ghost stories from when I was little. I’ve just always like stories aren’t exactly normal.

Hello, Shiloh! Great interview! :) I am looking forward to reading it - it definitely goes on my wishlist! :)

I will post again w/contest stuff - I’m on my cell. I’m afraid to tiurn on my ‘puter with this weather.

    Btw, please excuse any typos!
My question - I love asking people if they could trade places w/any literary character for q day — who would it be?
Would you change anything about the book?

If time machines existed - what famous 4 authors would you invite to dinner? Or anyone from history - not necessarily authors.

Looking forward to reading your book! :)

Libby L: Trade places with literary character for one day? As long as it’s just one day, would love to swap places with Eve Dallas from the IN DEATH books. And I’d try to bring an autochef back with me.

What four authors? Hmmm…tricky. Lynn Viehl, Nora Roberts, Laura Ingalls Wilder and Paul/Saul of Tarsus-an apostle credited with writing several of the books in the New Testament.

    Hi Shiloh!
Thanks for taking time to chat with us. I admit I haven’t read any of the Hunter series yet, but they’re so going in my TBR list!
From what I understood Hunting the Hunter wasn’t the first book of the series, so I’d like to ask you: are the books stand-alone stories, or would you recommend it better to catch up from the first book in the series? Thanks!
As for your question… I think Agatha Christie’s Poirot (I know, he’s got nothing to do with either romance or paranormal, but I love her books and read nearly all of them), LK Hamilton’s Anita Blake (what brought me over to urban fantasy) and Jennifer Rardin’s Jaz and Vayl (they’re far from normal, but still you can somehow identify with them).

Hi, Shiloh! Ooh, that’s an excellent list of dinner party guests you’ve got–I always struggle to answer those types of questions. In the past year, I read the Little House books with my kids, and it was such a pleasure for me to revisit them and quite eyeopening for the kids :) Guess her family is an example of characters that have stayed with us–we learned so much about them that they are “real” to us.

Congrats again on Hunter’s Need–do you do anything special to commemorate your releases?

hey shiloh, to answer your question first, many characters have stayed with me, but i don’t think there’s one who has affected me more than sherrilyn kenyon’s acheron. maybe it’s cliche among the romance audience for a female to be so drawn to him…. i know i’m definitely not the only one… but my main reason for him staying with me is the amount of suffering he goes through in the first part of the book and the person he’s able to become out of it. i don’t know if you’ve read the book, so i won’t spoil it for you, let’s just say he survives an unfathomable hell, and he comes out of it compassionate, forgiving, kind, noble even… basically all the positive things no one would ever expect or hope for someone who had gone through all of that. for me, even though he’s fictional, it gives hope to the idea that not all real-life people who have been hurt will turn around to hurt someone else… some may actually come out of their suffering a better person. an admirable one in acheron’s case.

any way, that’s enough there, i now have a question for you… when you first began writing, did you ever have doubts concerning your abilities? did you ever question whether or not you could actually do it or worry that you were just kidding yourself? i’ve yet to read one of your books, but the summary you gave above definitely intrigues me, so this question is not a reflection of my views on your abilities or talent, it’s just something i always wonder about when it comes to authors.

and for a bit more fun question… how do you celebrate, if you celebrate, the different stages of getting a book on the shelves (finishing the first draft, sending it to your editor, the official release date, etc.)?

Kate T: I still doubt myself. My editors would beat me for saying this, but often, I think my work sucks. I have to put my faith in my editors, because they tell me otherwise. I’d imagine a lot of writers doubt themselves. But we trust in our agents, editors, fellow writers in the early days and then when the books come out and readers enjoy them, we trust in them. That doubt wasn’t going to keep me from trying. I was determined to give it a shot and whatever happened, happened.

With celebrating… *G* It just depends. Wine, maybe. A special dinner with my family. Just depends. This week it’s been wine because we’re already running ragged from Christmas.

  57. Comment by Shiloh Walker — December 2, 2009 @ 6:36 pm

Deana: I’d have to say the same this sets other paranormal authors apart-the individual voice of the author. Five different vamp authors will five different tales of a vampire, or they should. I think too often one author becomes a hit and others try to do the same, by mimicking the voice. But what stands out is a unique voice, a unique twist. So hopefully what separates me is just that… a different way of telling of a story.

Good question, Shiloh. I can’t pick one character; my original answer was Jamie and Claire from the Outlander series. But. I was skimming the other posts, so I didn’t ask a duplicate question, and I have to agree with Rebecca M. about Persephone and Hades from Goddess of Spring; those are characters I will remember and reread! I also agree with Anna S. H.; Megan’s Mark was my first Lora Leigh book and I loved Megan! Especially when she punches Braden after she told him no more biting XD

Here’s my question for you, Shiloh: What are the best and worst parts of writing a long running series like The Hunters? Also, I wanted to know if Fragile (which I loved) is connected with Broken (coming out in March)?

Well. As for memorable characters it would be Georgina Kinkaid by Richelle Mead. I feel bad for her, and all her heartache.
and Cassandra Palmer by Karen Chance. She is funny. Well, she is somewhat weak at using her powers unlike most of the heroines I have read about. I like it that she doesn’t come in terms with it fast, but slowly. Lastly, Mac and Barrons by Karen Marie Moning. Sexy, enough said.
Question: do you enjoy tea or coffee, and what do you think about humor? Is it something we are born with or have to practice to get it?

Characters that stayed with me are Kelsey and Malachi…. don’t know why but I like to see them show up in different books. Other ones include Kelley Armstrongs Eve…. don’t know why… I hated her at first but then when she revealed herself in Haunted I truly enjoyed her more. There are sooooo many but don’t really know why they stick with me….

Congrats on the release!! It sounds great.

I have only read 1 book so far in the series. It was great I really liked it and cant wait to read Hunters Need.

The series seems like stand alone books that connect in some way. Just wondering if that was right Can you read them in any order, are there any that need to be read in a specific order? Do you have a plan for how many there will be or is it still open ended?

My answer probably isn’t terribly unique, but I really love the interaction between Lizzie and Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice. I think their appeal is in how unfit they are for one another, and yet how perfect they are once they’re together and set all the other stuff aside. Delish! Plus, I really like the troubled characters.

    Now for the contest…

Hi Shell: Easiest characters-dunno, might have been Declan and Tori from the first Hunter book. Hardest? Dominic and Nessa from Hunter’s Fall, or maybe Quinn and Sarah from Broken. :-)

Aori: I drink both. :-) Eh, humor is one of those things I suspect people are born with. Some people, no matter how hard they try, will NEVER be funny.

PamK: yes, there’s anotehr Veil book coming… there’s actually an excerpt in the back of Hunter’s Need. :-) Due out in late 2010.

DonnaS: I’ve got the stories listed in order at my site-if you go here,
    http://shilohwalker.com/hunters.htm

It will list the reading order. You can start with either Hunters: The Beginning, or with Hunting the Hunter and you should be fine. You could probably even start with Hunter’s Need without getting lost. Whenever possible, I try to write the stories so they will stand alone.

    Hi Shiloh!
When you write your books, do your ideas come up spontaneously and you write it on a piece of paper or do you find yourself looking in the computer, typing freely and the story comes out naturally?

I’ll save your hands and not ask a question since I haven’t read the books. :) An artist rarely thinks their work is great, but yes, it helps us to improve. :)

Kisten Phelps from Kim Harrison’s Hollows series is one of my favorites because he is like Spike from Buffy. I’m sure there are more (like Lafayette from True Blood, but I haven’t read the books), but that’s who immediately springs to mind.

Thank you for being here today!

Shiloh- Hi and thanks for taking time out of your day to connect with your audience. I have not had a chance to enjoy your books, but which book would be a good start for me to start reading in your series that you have going? And with all of the other paranormal writers out there- what author would you like to talk with someday? I know I would love to talk to Gena Showalter, J.R. Ward, Kresely Cole, P.C Cast, and Stephenie Meyer. (Sorry- I was a Twilight Mom before all the other authors…. ) And my apologies if you happened to answer this before in the posts- I could only scan quickly through the conversation since I am at work now on my lunch break.

Shiloh, when you write about characters that “stay with you”, like Ana and Duke, is it an effort to plan and write about them or does it flow easily, almost like you are channeling them? Does your muse, in effect, write the story for you?

A young healer named Snake, a strong female character in Vonda N. McIntyre’s book Dream Snake, has always stayed with me as one of my earlier introductions to a book driven by a female lead. I’ve always been drawn to female writers even during times when they were in small numbers in genres such as Science Fiction which was dominated by male writers early on. Octavia E. Butler was another author I enjoyed!

QUESTION: Shiloh before you were a writer, did you have a preference for male or female writers and did they write in a particular genre?

Beverly G: It feels awesome…and very strange. :0)

LauraP: I’ve got a couple of different series, but I assume you’re referring to the Hunters? If so, you could probably start with Hunter’s Need and do fine. The first berkley Hunters book was Hunting the Hunter, but a number of readers have told me they hadn’t read earlier books and followed along just fine. As to paranormal authors? Well, I’ve chatted online here and there with Gena Showalter a few times and I know JR-we’re in the same RWA local chapter. I do love Kresley Cole’s stuff and it would nice to chat with her. Jeaniene Frost-maybe…so I could pick her brain. I so love the Cat and Bones books. Those and Cole’s immortal series are pretty much my fave paranormal romance series.

Sara Dee: Oh, I’m museless. I don’t have a muse. I don’t think I could call it channeling them, either. It’s more like I’m watching them in my head, if that makes sense.

Raquel: I’ve always written. But I figured I’d need a back up career, even in school. I’m a licensed nurse and still help out from time to time, to keep my hand in.

Dovile: This particular Hunters book is about a shapeshifter and a psychic. But my Hunters world involves shifters, werewolves (there are different breeds in my world), vampires, witches and psychic. I’m easily bored so I can’t do just straight vampires or werewolves, etc. And it would be rated R. It’s not as hot as some of my books, but it’s definitely too steamy for PG13 crowds.

Sue A: I tend to read more female authors, but that’s because I’m drawn to romance and most romance writers are female. I do enjoy urban fantasy, SF and fantasy, though and with those, I’ve read both male and female and enjoyed them equally.

I have to agree with Jo K, Chris and Cathy of VC Andrews “Flowers in the Attic”, have probably stayed with me for over 30 years. I was a freshman in high school when I first read this book and was equally horrified and saddened by the story. I have reread it and the others in the series many times and it still gets to me.
While I have read several of your stand alones I haven’t read the “Hunter” series yet. I do have books 7-10 and as soon as I run down copies of the earlier ones, I intend to jump right in(I am one of those who must read them in order).Just loved “Fragile” and can’t wait for the release of “Broken”.
