1.) Harper has a very creepy ability, or power. Would you want one like it?
I don’t think I would enjoy this power for my own. I am more of a “give me an invisible jet and killer bullet repelling jewelry kind of girl. lol
I have read the first 2 books in the series, I *just* got book 3 and 4. I still don’t really know how the grey works or the full ramifications of what Harper is dealing with. Then again I may just be slow up on the uptake. Even with my handicap, I am really enjoying this series. It is very gritty and down to earth. Very realistic.

2.) Atmosphere plays an important role in the series. Aside from Seattle, does the imagery used remind you of any other place?
Since I am from Seattle I don’t really know. It doesn’t really remind me of anyplace else. I think it is pretty cool to be able to recognize landmarks and events that Kat weaves into the stories.

3.) Who is your favorite secondary character?
That is a hard one for me. I like the shifter guy who does all of the side jobs for Harper (name is slipping my mind). I would like Will, but something about him rubs me the wrong way. Like he’s too hard on Harper. I try to see things from his perspective, but eh. lol

I’m here. Seattle because I live there. And it’s cool and haunted and stuff.

But on the topic question, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t want Harper’s paranormal talent. I like my friends weird, but alive.

Favorite setting… I really loved working with the underground stuff. And there are about a hundred other places I want to put something wonderfully creepy in Seattle. Like Red Level in the library is already creepy and I love the dining room of the Arctic Building (with the walruses on the outside), and and and… gosh there’s a lot of marvelous weird in Seattle.

    And Hi, Nicole!

    I love your book!

1: can’t say as I’d want those powers, I’m quite happy not seeing what’s really going on in the afterlife! I can wait to find out ;)

Kat - What is that guardian beast in the books? A ghost? some sort of construct? or just a plain old fashioned monster? (or would that be giving too much away?)

Love the series, always enjoy a good ghost story !

Angie: I can’t really tell you about the Guardian Beast yet because that would be a big spoiler on LABYRINTH which is coming out in August 2010.

I have to wait till August to find out? phooey! *lol*

Oh well, can’t blame me for trying ;) I will add it to my list of books to keep an eye out for in the new year.

I am glad she ditched Wil for Quentin. He’s a more interesting character.

Actually, one more quick question - how much time to you spend on research, vs writing? You have such detailed info in your settings, does it take a long time to look it all up?

    [Reply]

  22. Comment by Rebecca M. — December 2, 2009 @ 2:12 pm

Don’t know if I would want Harper’s powers. The old expression “ignorance is bliss” pops into mind.

As far as Seattle’s imagery goes…I’ve never been so I wouldn’t know. I tend to take the authors descriptions and build the world and scenes from there.

Hmm…secondary characters. I like Will. There’s just something about him.

Research… About 2 months plus spot-checks as I go. I always miss something no matter how hard I try, though.

It’s hard dealing with the love interests. They are both good guys; smart, nice, with good hearts. Also, well… I stink at romance. I gotta admit I tried writing one once and it was HORRIBLE. OMG the cliches! I hide it in shame and it never did get published. With luck no one will ever find it.

#1 Helllo and welcome Kat, my question today is can the books be read as stand alones or should they be read in order? I ask because have all the books so far except for “Vanished and Labyrinth” and have to admit to waiting until all are out to read the series. My TBR pile is stacked high right now and these are on the top reads when have all the books to read in order….

I don’t know what other people would say–being the writer, I’m not objective–but I always say they are sort of like V.I. Warshawski or Kinsey Milhone with monsters.

    Hiya Kat!
I have been wondering for a while where the idea came from for such a creepy yet fabulous talent you gave to Harper?

    [Reply]

  31. Comment by Kat Richardson — December 2, 2009 @ 3:54 pm

Hey there Red! It came from Television. No really, not like “It Came From the TV” or something, but I was watching this show on TV when I was a kid and there was this ghost detective–that is a ghost who used to be a detective. And I thought that was nifty and then I thought “what if it was the other way around, what if the detective saw ghosts…?” This was back in like… 1970 or something. And you know me: I just can’t leave an idea alone, so I picked at it for years until I was smart enough to figure out HOW you could see ghosts and stuff and then I just had to find a nice character to torture with the ability.

Kat’s books are great. I really like Quin, especially after “Underground” which is the last book I have read. Yes, Vanished is next for me. I find the greywalker abilities kind of creepy and am not sure I would like them at all. The way Kat has brought in the Native American and the Homeless cultures, blending and interweaving, was an interesting twist to the series. It’s kind of hard to compare to other authors. This is less an “all things paranormal” and more about Harper with her particular abilities.

keeping them straight… that’s kind of hard. I have to check sometimes, but I also keep a “bible” that has a lot of the series details written down in it. and I’m notorious for making a million internet bookmarks and making notes on everything, like napkins and envelopes and my husband’s t-shirts….

  35. Comment by Tara Coomes — December 2, 2009 @ 4:05 pm

I’ve read all the books in the Greywalker series so far. I started with Poltergeist, because my boyfriend at the time saw the cover, read the blurb and knew it was something I’d enjoy.
Yes, you can read them out of order, at least the second one (Poltergeist). It took me quite a while to realize that There was a book I had missed. Kat explained most of the key points from the first book, so it does stand alone, but its BETTER to read them in order.

Yes, I would like Harper’s power, though I’d be a lot more active trying to figure out the ins and outs of the Grey and how to defend myself once I knew that ‘the monsters’ were real.

As to secondary characters, I found Cameron charming. He’s a neat guy. But my fave is Quentin. He has such an odd amalgamation of skills and knowledges, (not to mention social awkwardness) that he reminds me of some of my friends. And his back story, while seemingly far-fetched, is well done and thoroughly enjoyable.
Though I do enjoy Mara and her husband too :)

@ Kat all the guys in the books are fabulous. They are the right mix of personality and quirk to make them seem ralistic and likeable or in some cases loathable (sp?) For instance a couple of your vampires are incredibly detailed and you don’t just dislike them for causing Harper trouble, you (I) dislike them for THEM.

1.) Harper has a very creepy ability, or power. Would you want one like it?
Nah. Everyday life has enough baggage without powers to add to it.
2.) Atmosphere plays an important role in the series. Aside from Seattle, does the imagery used remind you of any other place? Portland, but then I live here. Heehee The atmosphere and Seattle landmarks are the first thing I loved about the books.

The ability that Harper has is indeed creepy, and one I would not like; but it sounds like the kind of creepy that makes for really interesting plotlines like where she sees the ghost of her ex.
