Release Party, Chat and Contest With Author Caridad Piñeiro
I am so happy to be here to chat with about my exciting new paranormal suspense series – The SINS series – from Grand Central Publishing. The first book in the series, Sins of the Flesh, is available right now and the second book, STRONGER THAN SIN, will be out in October 2010.
The SINS series revolves around the premise of what would happen if a group of individuals had been genetically engineered against their will and suddenly started developing new and inhuman traits because of the genes implanted in their bodies.
In Sins of the Flesh, Caterina Shaw risks everything to overcome a terminal illness and save her life, but finds herself becoming something other than human and on the run, accused of a savage murder. Enter the hero, Mick Carrera, a dark mercenary who is sent to either capture or eliminate Caterina.
The genes implanted in Caterina are not only making it possible for her to make her skin change color, but also to heal faster and be stronger. As the genes continue to replicate, her skin and eyes are also beginning to glow as the gene markers implanted in her are becoming more visible.
The “glowing” part is actually real science and based on markers used to track gene expression. The markers are fluorescent proteins which cause areas with the implanted genes to glow in certain light.
In future books in the SINS series, we’ll meet other individuals who have received the gene implants. For some of the patients it will be a case of having the genes illegally implanted in them, such as in Sins of the Flesh and STRONGER THAN SIN. In future books, the patients will be more willing to undertake the transformations, but will be unaware of the very dangerous consequences of being genetically altered.
My hope is to not only provide you with some very sexy and intense romantic suspense stories, but to also give you a peek into the fascinating things that are going on today in the worlds of genetic engineering, bionics and nanotechnology. Huh? You don’t think science can be sexy? Take a chance with the SINS series and find out just how sexy it can be!
But for now, I wonder what you might do if you could implant genes to give yourself different powers? Would you choose to have super powers? If you did, what kinds of super powers do you think you might like to have?

I have to wait until October 2010 for the next one!!! THose bad guys are still out there after Caterina and ANYTHING could happen to her by October!
LOL, Karin! I’m sorry you have to wait so long! I will tell you that I had a blast writing STRONGER THAN SIN and I hope all of you will like who I picked to be the heroine.
I agree– It will be a wait, but it’s got to be worth it! Hi Caridad! Stopping by, saying hi and waving! Have a great party today.
(I’ll put the Bitten link on my blog)
Then I have to get back to work! But I’ll be back in a few hours to see how its going! Kaye
Hi Caridad! RSVP’d and already a FB freind (Lisa Mason)
looking forward to reading the new book!
Hi Caridad! Welcome to BBB! We are so honored to have you with us today and appreciate you taking time out of your busy schedule to chat with us.
I have a question.
Can you tell us a little about your other paranormal works? And if you have anything else on the horizon outside of the amazing new SINS series?
Thank you again!
Rachel
Hmm, super powers, let me think - I’d want the power to create fire. Don’t ask me why, since it’s not like we have more than a basic fireplace in this house, but it seems so hot and sexy and powerful. LOL
Oh, I also RSVP’d.
Thanks for having me here, Rachel. I do write a number of other books. I’m an author for Silhouette Romantic Suspense and hope to have a new two book series with them soon revolving around a casino in Las Vegas.
I also write the popular THE CALLING Vampire series for Silhouette Nocturne. I’ve got another two books coming out in THE CALLING series, but probably not until late 2010 or early 2011.
This sounds like a really awesome series, and it’s definitely going on my ‘to-get’ list!

Hi Caridad!!! Thanks for stopping by. Who could pass up a super power? I’ve never been a great swimmer, so I think I would like the ability to breathe underwater. How much fun would that be? Super strength wouldn’t be bad either.
What about you, what power would you choose?
As an engineer, I agree science can be very sexy.
Fire and Water. Elemental powers. Science does rock and there are so many interesting things going on. In future books in the series, I’m going to introduce bionics and nanotechnology which provide the characters with all kinds of super powers.
As for me, I think I’d like super strength so I could protect people.

Question for Caridad,
Was it tough deciding just how far to go with the gene work? Super powers are cool but you can take it too far and cause more trouble than its worth.
I am looking forward to reading your books, and Oct 2010 seems SO FAR away!!
Kim
Hi Caridad. Thanks so much for joining us here today.
Hmm — good question. I’m not sure I would want any superpower, but, if I did have to choose, maybe one where my body did not require much sleep. as much as I love to sleep in, think of how much we could get done in a day if our bodies did not require as much as they do.
My question for you: what genres do you enjoy for your personal reading?
Hi. I RSVP’d and am a friend of Caridad’s on FB. I can’t wait to read Sins of the Flesh but almost want to hold off until closer to the release of Stronger than Sin….waiting is so hard!
*waving*
Hi Caridad!
I am so happy that you are here with us today. I can’t wait to read your book, after reading the review and synopsis I know I have to have it. I read your novella Crazy for the Cat and LOVED IT!!! Are you going to be writing anymore books involving the shifters? Rachel’s story was so good..
If I could have super powers, I would choose telepathy. I would love to be able to read minds.. I would also love to be able to move things with my mind.
I’m wishing you much continued success.. Oh and I just ordered Sins of the Flesh.. It’s going to be torture waiting for it to come.
Happy Reading

Hi, Caridad! I have really enjoyed reading your “Calling” series. I just finished “Fate Calls” since it’s the Christmas season. I’m glad Hadrian finally got a Merry Christmas after 1,700 years! Your new “Sins” series sounds great. If I could have an altered genetic trait, I would probably want super-strength or a super-metabolism. Congratulations on your new release!

How many books will there be in the series? To answer the question of whether would like to have a super power, depends on what kind of day am having. Most days not really, some days to be able to clone myself would be an awesome super power to have could get more done….

It is hard deciding how far to push genetic engineering. I think we all see in the news the info about genetically modified organisms and fears about whether these are safe to eat. In SINS, the scientists are pushing what they can do for material gain and treat Caterina as just another guinea pig. So yes, there is definitely a line we can’t cross.
As for what I enjoy reading - definitely paranormals and romantic suspense. I’m never without a JD Robb book on my nightstand or TBR pile because I get so far behind on account of work and writing.

I’m currently reading PURITY IN DEATH because I am reading the ones I have missed out of order.
As for how many books in the series, right now I’m contracted for just the two, but have a proposal ready for 3 and 4 which will revolve around military heroes, bionics and nanotechnology. I’m very excited about all the upcoming books and I hope you will like meeting more of Mick’s family as well as see what’s happening with the characters that you know.
Hi Caridad,
I have Sins of the Flesh on my TBR list but haven’t gotten to it yet.
If I had a super power I think it’d be to be able to regulate my body temperature - I don’t like freezing in cold weather.

I cannot wait to read this series. I love the idea of a story based on genetic engineering. Thanks, Caridad.
Hi Caridad, this book sounds really good. I like anything that’s different and I hope to buy this one soon, I have it on my TBR list. As for special powers I guess I would be greedy and want several. Kind of like Christine Feehan’s ghost walkers or Nalini Singh’s Pys people. I would love to be stronger, able to move things, and heal myself and others.
What made you deside to go toward the science side of life and experiment with genetic engenieering, bionics, and nanotechnology? I have to admit all of that facinates me and has for several years.

Hi Caridad,
Thanks for joining us today. Can’t wait to read the SINS series. IF I could change my genes to gain a power, I think I’d like to be able to have selective telepathy and maybe be able to talk with spirits when I want to. I wouldn’t want these powers, though, if I couldn’t control them.

I was a science major in college and loved genetics and immunology. The ideas I learned there intrigued me so I kept up on what was happening even after I graduated. When it came time to try something “paranormal” I thought, why not include the science that I know into the story. So I brushed up on what was happening in genetic engineering and DNA manipulation and worked that into a story. My nephew’s girlfriend is a PHD candidate and is working on gene expression so I would bounce ideas and procedures off of her. For the next book, where the hero has a bone disease, I talked with a friend who is an orthopedic surgeon about what I had planned. So, a bit of research was involved, but I loved doing it.
One fun fact - the glowing fish with the GFPs I mention in the book both online and in some retail stores!
wow just wow this book sounds awesome. I will have it come payday but then I have to wait til october *:( for the next one

Hi Caridad, Sins of the Flesh is in my TBR pile. Super power, hmmm…the way my life is going, if it could resemble the last year, I’d want to live forever. I’m lucky with a loving family and I’m doing what I enjoy, yeah, I could do it forever and a day. *grins*
QUESTION: You were a science major, your job was/is another field - why writing? What was it that made you want to write romance, who influenced you in that area? Oh gosh, that’s kind of a two part question.
Hello Ms Caridad!!
What new characters and exciting things do you have coming to us in your next book? Can you tell me?
If I had super powers I would want to be able to 1) super strength and brains and 2)jump like in hyperspace from one place to another. Be here one second than when

Yep, my other job is being an attorney and yes, romance writing is quite far removed from that. I’ve wanted to be a writer since the fifth grade when a teacher assigned a project - to write a book for the class lending library. I knew I wanted to write, but I also knew I needed a career. So, I went to college and law school, but the whole time I kept on writing, hoping that one day I would be able to publish one of my novels. As for what influenced me, I read Wuthering Heights so many times one summer that the librarian told me I couldn’t take it out anymore. Even at such a young age I was drawn to romances.
Waving! Hello, m’dear. You know how much I enjoyed Sins… I’ve been yakking about it ever since I finished it. Waiting until next year for the next one is a bummer. Maybe GCP can move up the date, hint… hint…

I think I have you on goodreads. If not, what a great place for me to write a review for Sins… I’ll get on that. Just as soon as life slows down.
I hope you’re selling thousands and thousands of books, Caridad.
As for what’s coming up in future books, Lisa, lots of fun things. In book 2 there is a sexy ex-football player as the hero. He has a bone disease that’s made him leave the game, but he’ll have some tough choices to make when he’s pulled into a secret operation that wants to take advantage of the weird effects the genes are producing in him. Books 3 and 4 will feature Mick’s sister Bobbie, a Marine injured in Iraq as well as a new character - her platoon leader. You’re going to see more interesting science dealing with bionics and nanotechnology.
Hi Catherine - here’s hoping they do move up the date.
My train is almost in the station, so I’ve got to run! Will be back after dinner to chat with you all.

Oh wow.
But for now, I wonder what you might do if you could implant genes to give yourself different powers? Would you choose to have super powers? If you did, what kinds of super powers do you think you might like to have?
I might implant myself with powers to read minds whenever I choose. If I say JUST to read minds, then I would go crazy with reading every single thought of every single person. As for others…super stamina, strength, endurance and metabolism..chocolate and free will yum. And maybe to be able to erase my scent. Most supernats concentrate on their senses and that would definitely help me lose them if i would get in trouble. yep.
I was wondering did you study nanotechnology and bionics or is someone helping you? Do you teach it?
Thank you! Aori H.

It’s always tempting to be stronger, faster, better… But I’d have to think it over very carefully before I’d let anyone implant me with anything. I might be more tempted if it were done to cure a disease. Like your heroine. ;D

Hey Caridad!
I find all the science involved facinating. I was an English major so I avoided science like the plague but it makes for interesting paranormal topics. I know you said you were a science major, but how did you get interested in science to begin with? And how long did it take you to develop the original idea for the SINS series?

I think what sets this series apart is the genetic engineering aspect and the fact that it’s real science behind some of the things that seem “paranormal.” So really it’s part thriller, part sc-fi and of course, part sexy romance. A real mix of genres.
As for how I am an attorney and write, I’m very regimented. I have a schedule for writing and I stick to it.
There are 2 books in the series right now, 3 and 4 are in the works and I hope to continue it by forming a special organization with all the genetically altered patients.
As for how long it took to develop the concept, the characters came to me first and then the idea for the gene manipulation. After that, it took about a week to lay out the basic ideas and then another week or two to do the preliminary research. As I wrote, I made a point of checking procedures for the science and medical treatments and also visited a bunch of the locales where the book is set. If you visit the website, there are photos of many of the places along the Jersey Shore where the book is set as well as some pictures and videos of glowing cats.
Hi Caridad!
We really appreciate you visiting us at BBB. Thanks for visiting.
Hi again
I’m reposting my question because it didn’t get answered when I posted earlier, and I would really like to know the answer.
I read your novella Crazy for the Cat and Loved It. I was wondering if you were going to do anymore shifter books? I loved Rachel and Javier’s story, I thought the origins of how the tribe shifted to animal form was very clever.
I’m looking forward to reading Sins of the Flesh
I sent a friends invite from myspace.com, I also bought your book at borders this evening.
Hi Caridad! I hope this isn’t too late! I will post my contest stuff later - I just wanted to ask a question & I apologize for any typos!
I am completely intrigued by the idea behind this series! It’s different than other books on my TBR list & I like that! I’m definitely adding it to my TBR list!
Great interview!
i like asking people this: if you could go back in time & “live in” one book — what would it be? Why? Would you change anything going on? My pick would probably be Lord of the Rings- my favorite!
If time machines existed — & you could invite any three authors from history to dinner. Who would you invite??
I wonder do you ever think whoa. . that’s too much (either sexual or violence) and pull back on what you were going to write.
Hello Caridad,
I accually have a funny but anoying story about trying to purchase your book. We were in Indiana over Thanksgiving and decided it would be safe to go shopping after 2p.m. on black Friday. Well as i was reaching for Sins Of The Flesh, a lady came from no where and ripped it out of my hand.
Needless to say i went home empty handed and i am hopeing she went home and took a nap!
Boy, I’m sorry I missed a question! I loved the shapeshifters in CRAZY FOR THE CAT and I hope I will do a story in the future with a shapeshifter, but probably not the characters from CRAZY FOR THE CAT. If you like werewolves, I’ve got a free urban fantasy read up on the website.
What book would I “live in”? That’s an awesome question. That’s a tough one. I loved WOLF AND THE DOVE and maybe going back to that time and trying to smooth the waters after the Norman conquest would be interesting.
On the sex/violence thing - I usually let the story dictate how much sex/violence and the only book in which I had a WHOA moment was FURY CALLS. I really pushed the envelope on that one, but ended up not censoring what I thought was right. My editors also did little censoring on the sex/violence, but that book had a very strong response from some people. Some thought it had gone too far while others thought it rocked.
Oh no, Ida. Seriously? She ripped it out of your hand! That’s awful! I was out there on Black Friday as well because my daughter was working a 2 a.m. to 12:30 pm shift. What a zoo!
One last answer before I hit the bed (I have to get up at 5!)
For the time machine and three authors: Nora Roberts, Emily Bronte and William Shakespeare!
tty tomorrow!
Hi Caridad! This series sounds really interesting. It is amazing what truth is actually in some of the paranormals of today.
I am not sure what super power I would pick so I guess I would take what I could get. I have no pride. LOL
Can’t wait for the upcoming gene implants!!!

I enjoy your THE CALLING vampire series and your new THE SINS series sounds exciting! I am looking forward to reading Sins of the Flesh.
When you write your series books, does each one get a little harder to write? Is it hard to keep track of your world building?

Hi!
If I could change my genes to get powers, I’d like telekinesis and an ability to fly or maybe to teleport, flying is cooler though. or simply a power of good sight, so that I could throw away my glasses:) But it would be a realy difficult decision, as that would mean changing myself to something that isn’t me. Like doing a plastic surgery, only on my genes, not face.
My question for you is:
do you research all those scientific details in your books by yourself, or maybe youhave some science advisor? Thanks!

Also, can Caterina’s children inherit her altered genes?
I like science (especially genetics and forensics) in my paranormal. It’s interesting she glows like Merry Gentry from LKH.
Messing with genetics is extremely dangerous because we have no way of knowing the true long-term effects, but sometimes it looks like the only way to try and cure diseases which would otherwise be fatal. If there were no huge detrimental side effects, I would choose to have fast healing and strength.

Thanks to all of you for dropping by last night! As for the questions, UNDEAD UPRISING is only serial chapters online. When I do reach the end of Book 1 in the series, I will likely bundle all the chapters together for all of you to be able to downloadm the story.
Writing a series is hard because you want to keep each story fresh and unique, but you also need for them to keep true to the world you are building. I always try to leave enough slack in certain areas to allow for future twists. For example, in FATE CALLS from Holiday with a Vampire, I had to find a way to allow Connie to possibly become pregnant because I wanted to set up that possibility for other characters in future books in THE CALLING.
Same in the SINS series. I need enough of a world to make the series unique, but also need to be able to introduce new elements to the story.
As for whether Cat’s genes can be passed to her children, the answer is a big “yes”. In fact, in real life science, animals implanted with similar markers have passed those altered genes to their offspring. For me, that presents a number of problems for Cat’s future. It also made me figure out a way that other characters - Jesse in the next book - might be able to not pass on the genes.
Will Cat ever have a baby with Mick? LOL! I’m working on that possibilty for book 3, but I’ve got to make sure I can have a plausible scientific explanation for it.
As for a science advisor or assistant - just me for the most part. I am a science geek. I also have my nephew’s PHD candidate girlfriend who is working on gene expression and finally, my hubby, who has a Master’s in bioengineering. I usually reach out to them after I’ve researched a science fact, have thought about how to put that into the story and need a sounding board to see if they think it will fly.

Hi Caridad!
Thanks for taking time to answer to our questions. I haven’t read Sins of the Flesh yet, but it sure is going on my TBR list!
I’d like to ask you: you’re not the only author uniting the paranormal with biotecnology, do you think this trend is going to develope into a subgenre? Thanks!
As for your question, I think I’d like to have telekinesis and the ability to teleport myself form one place to another.

Don’t you just love the Eve Dallas series. I collected nearly all of them reading them in batches of 3 or 4 until I got to #35. Now I guess I’ll have to wait like everyone else. Congrats on the new series. I’ve read all your earlier nocturne books and loved them. Glad it is a series as I love visiting characters and knowing the rules of the game. I find the nanotechnology fascinating(Lynsay Sands’s use of it in explaining her vamps made them seem perfectly normal)Can’t wait to visit with Mick and his family to see how this has turned their life upside down. Can’t wait to see what the nanos do for Caternia.

I think that there’s more and more in the world of science that can be used in the paranormal genre to create different stories and yes, I do see more and more people who will rely on it either in a secondary capacity or as the main thrust of the story.
In THE CALLING series, I started off in DANGER CALLING by laying some scientific groundwork on there being two cells strains in a vampire’s bite. In DEATH CALLS, Diana is contaminated with the blood and starts to have issues. If I get to write the book that I want to tie up the Diana/Ryder story line, that two cell strain foundation will play out.
In the SINS series, I’m doing the same. There will be a foundation of what’s happening with the genes, etc. and I’ll be expanding on that to allow more and more to happen in future books.
Caridad,
This book sound so good. I’m almost afraid to read it, simply because I’m not sure I can wait until Oct. 2010 just to read the second one!
If I could have super powers, I think I would go for speed. Then I could actually get my house cleaned! Around my reading time, of course.
I subscribe to Bitten By Books and am friends with Caridad on Facebook.
Thanks to you both for having this fun chat party today!

Hello Caridad,
What a lovely name you have! Do you remember the first book that was ever read to you? What impact if any did it have on you?
Thanks.
I RSVPed.
Hi Caridad, I have enjoyed your books for a long time now. I got Sins of the Flesh as soon as I got to CA as I was traveling when it came out. What a great book. So sad we have to wait until Oct. for book 2.If I could have a super power, it would be the ability to heal. Then I could get rid of my health problems. Your Urban novel on your blog is so good. I can’t wait for the next chapter. All of you need to read it. I wanted to know if all you Calling series can be found somewhere? I have found a few but not all of them. Have a great day.

Oops!!!! double post. So sorry. I need a new mouse for Christmas. This one double clicks way too often.
TO DEANNA H. Answer to your questions about what seperates Sins from the rest of the genre? My answer. The idea that the scientists are the bad guys. Their greedy desire to play god and make huge amounts of money at a persons expense makes this ‘paranormal’ so different from the rest. Normally in the paranormal genre, the ‘being’ with a gift, or curse or whatever you want to call turning furry or fanged in the book, is from the gene pool or a infliction given by another vamp or were… in Sins, its the humans who are the bad guys.
I hope that answers your question.
I think readers would be shocked to learn that I’m actually quite shy. (Yes, I hear a lot of you snorting and chuckling out there!). It’s taken me a long time to feel comfortable speaking to others in public.
As for THE CALLING series, they are all available in e-book versions now in various places. No reprints as books though. I keep on hoping they will they offer them in sets of three or as a POD, but not yet.
Catherine - good point about the scientists. Didn’t think of it that way, but yes, in this story the “paranormal” creatures are the heroes.
