Sins of the Flesh by Caridad Piñeiro

****½

Musician Caterina Shaw is near death when she checks herself into secret, private clinic where she will undergo radical gene therapy. She has no hope of ever leaving the clinic alive but perhaps she can make some contribution to medical science by allowing her dying body to be experimented upon. Months later, Caterina has undergone a transformation of unbelievable proportions. She has powers she does not understand, a body she no longer recognizes as her own, and memories of murder.

She escapes from the clinic, but where can she go? Is she beyond help? Is she even human any longer? Mick Carrera, a mercenary, is called in by one of the clinic’s bigwigs to find the errant Ms. Shaw and bring her back. Mick finds Caterina but, rather than bring her in, he decides to champion her and find out how she can be restored to herself. Mick and Caterina are going to need more than merc skills and altruism because someone else is hunting Ms. Shaw and his motives aren’t nearly so nice.

Paranormal aspects aside, Sins of the Flesh is a solidly crafted romantic suspense novel: guns blaze, good guys and bad guys chase each other, dark corridors and lurking stairwells beckon character and reader alike. Sins of the Flesh boasts enough heart-jacking action in its plot and enough relationship development to keep readers happily turning the page from the first line of the Prologue, “The day the music died, Caterina Shaw did as well” to the chilling finish. This one should come with a “Satisfaction Guaranteed” sign right on the front cover.
