I have not read this book but from the review it would be right up my alley. I love zombies. I have not read a book yet. We usually do movies. It sounds pretty good to me with all the blood and guts. LOL.

    Hey everyone, (waving)
I haven’t read this book yet, but I do have it on my TBR list. I just learned about Mark and his books, from being on this site. I love the Vlogs by him :) So can anyone tell me what they love about this book?
I haven’t read the book yet, so I can’t answer the questions but I am interested to see how having a zombie as the main character works out. Did it work for ya’ll?

If we’re talking about Mark and his book am I allowed to say a bunch of dirty fucked up shit? I know the answer but I figured I could give the people a lil heads up before I start…..

  5. Comment by Dragonkat — December 1, 2009 @ 11:13 am

    Discussion:
    1) Not a big zombie fan but really enjoyed learning about Amanda. Yes, I often forgot she was a zombie (until she got hungry… but even that was pretty funny).

    2) So I just finished saying I don’t like the eating part and now I am going to say that one scene that really sticks out is Amanda’s first big nosh out with the high school kids who think they are going to an orgy (not putting in a spoiler alert ‘cos it happens early in book and only illustrates that Amanda eats. Duh.)

    3) I had a few people I liked but can;t remember their names at moment. Will post again when I get home and have book in front of me.

    Rest of stuff

I’m definitely going to monitor you people for the appropriate level of vulgarity. For now, I’ve got to take the dog to the vet. But I’ll be watching. Oh yes, I will.

    Save Amanda Feral!!!!

  7. Comment by Zombie Joe — December 1, 2009 @ 11:25 am

1.) How do you like having a zombie as a main character? Do you sometimes forget Amanda is a zombie?

I never forget she is a zombie, that leads to one getting chomped! I love the idea. It is a definite break from the “vampire with a soul” and the “monster with a heart of gold and totally GQ hair” that is so common in UF these days. I like my monsters… well… monsters.

Not to mention almost every character in this series is damaged in some way shape or form before ever becoming undead. Most of their really interesting traits are the psychological baggage they bring with them into undeath.

2.) What is your favorite scene from the book?

From this book? Tough call, especially without giving anything away. Her final scene with the therapist is a rather fun one that sticks out in my mind. That should be enough said without giving away anything. ;)

3.) There are some very amusing secondary characters in the book. Do you have a favorite?

I would have to go with either Gil or Wendy. Wendy’s penchant for Twix bars just seems to strike a cord of funny for me. But overall, I think Gil is the most pulled together of the group (which is to say his psychological damage is deep enough that people can really gloss over what a mess he can be at times).

Special Note: Through this site I have come across a number of books that I might not have ever considered. I think that is the real value of the site. If you are checking this out for the contest or something to do when the boss is not looking, consider picking up Happy Hour of the Damned. If you are here on this site but have not read it, you will likely enjoy the hell out of it.

    Contest Stuff…

Probably done at least half of it already, but I think I am covered for Battle of the Network Zombies. ;)

  8. Comment by Gina Marie — December 1, 2009 @ 11:27 am

I haven’t read this series yet but since I enjoy the zombies in Janiene’s series with Cat I am sure this is a series I will be able to get right into. From the review and some comments it sounds like you need to use oyur brain which is a nice addition to fiction. I don’t neccessarily want Hemingway but I get tired of Go Jack, Go books as well. I am so excited to find there is an author who writes what I like and requires you have a brain if you want to get all the nuances. I can’t wait to start reading his books now.

And just because Mark claims he is watching, I urge you all to join in on Save Amanda Feral so that we may one day have the “pleasure” of reading about Wendy or Gil ordering Swedish Poo Furniture and the matching “crockery”. I guess it is Mark’s method of art imitating life there.

(So is that an appropriate level of vulgarity? lol)

  10. Comment by Stephanie D — December 1, 2009 @ 11:51 am

1.) I love the zombie as the main character we are so caught up in vamps (me included) that we forste there are other supernaturals out there. I definatly fortget Amanda is a zombie she seems so human still!!!
2.) The near ending in the bathroom with Elizabeth too cleaver!!

3.) Gil, he is too much! Very protective of the girls already!!
    I soo voted this week!
Save Amanda Please I really enjoy this series!!!!
Mark who is your fav character?

  11. Comment by Aymee — December 1, 2009 @ 12:00 pm

Sadly, I haven’t had a chance to read this yet (although I have a signed copy, does that count for anything? LOL)… but I love the idea of a zombie as a main character. Brian Keene really turned me onto zombie novels, quite by accident (even if the end of that series was WRONG in so many ways…) and I have been looking for good zombie books you can sink your teeth into (ha ha… pathetic zombie humor there) ever since.

    #2, 3, & 5 done. I Retweeted Mark’s tweet this morning about the chat. And I won’t enter #4 since I already have one Kindle. :)

  12. Comment by Lisa D. — December 1, 2009 @ 12:16 pm

I have not read any of his books, but that is why I like this site so much. I find out about new authors! I have done all the rest of the things.

  13. Comment by Jaye Wells — December 1, 2009 @ 12:26 pm

1.) How do you like having a zombie as a main character? Do you sometimes forget Amanda is a zombie?
Okay, before I answer, I have to add a disclaimer that I’m a friend of Mark’s so I’m totally biased. But I seriously, seriously love this series. It’s sick and wrong and smart and hilarious. Love me some Amanda!

Honestly, when I first heard about the book (before I was friends with Mark) I thought “nah, no way someone can pull off a zombie MC.” I’m not afraid to admit I was wrong. Mark manages to make flesh eating funny, and in my book that’s genius. And no, I don’t forget she’s a zombie. Forget at your own peril.

2.) What is your favorite scene from the book?
Is it wrong to admit that I have a soft spot for explosive diarrhea?

3.) There are some very amusing secondary characters in the book. Do you have a favorite?
Probably Gil. The scene where he describes how he was turned had me howling. If you ever get a chance to hear Mark read this scene in front of your grandmothers, I highly recommend it. Yes, that really happened. And yes, I am in therapy because of it. The scars run deep.

  14. Comment by Jason Lewis — December 1, 2009 @ 12:29 pm

To those who have yet to read Mark’s books yet, shame on you!!! Shave Amanda Feral!!!! You bitches heard me right, I said shave.

  15. Comment by Zombie Joe — December 1, 2009 @ 1:41 pm

Seriously… doesn’t all diarrhea need a soft spot. Methinks Ms. Wells is displaying a gift for the obvious. ;)

I think any reading or interaction with Mark Henry (or Jaye Wells, or Dakota Cassidy or Mario Acevedo for that matter) and you run the risk of needing therapy. You will make it out the other side with some good stories (and possibly a bra that requires a license and 5 day waiting period), but you will need some therapy.

The scars indeed run deep. But at least they build character(s)… ;)

  16. Comment by Jennifer L — December 1, 2009 @ 1:44 pm

I adored having a zombie as the main character. Amanda is a kick-ass heroine, and I admit there’s been plenty of times I wished I could just devour someone who was pissing me off…

Gil is my favorite secondary character, mostly because I have a friend IRL who is just like him (except for the being a vampire bit).

But I really couldn’t pick out a favorite scene; it all flowed together so effortlessly, radiant with juicy snark!

Lol looks like I got here right in time. Razor in hand Jason. Is it wrong that I hear your name in my head as JaySaaaunn? LOL

1.) How do you like having a zombie as a main character? Do you sometimes forget Amanda is a zombie?
As I mentioned in the review oh so long ago, Zombies are not my ideal character, but Amanda and mark (and of course Wendy) have changed all the for me. I have since been able to read other storylines with zombies and not loose my lunch. I think the humor and literal toilet humor really help me to take a step back from the fact that she’s a zombie. But Mark really is so damn descriptive with the characters and what they are doing that you can’t forget.

2.) What is your favorite scene from the book?
Probably when Amanda meets Wendy. LOL

3.) There are some very amusing secondary characters in the book. Do you have a favorite?
Wendy and Gil are at the top of the list for sure. Okay hell they are the list. LOL All of the characters in this book give something to it. There are no “fluff” characters. Which is a hallmark of an excellent book and shows that Mark is a master at his craft. Each one has the right amount of death oops depth. lol

Once you hear the tone/voice that Mark has written in, you REALLY get to the next level in the story. You can experience that here:
    http://bittenbybooks.com/?p=12465

For those who haven’t purchased the book be sure to get your copy in Mass Market Paperback in March. You won’t be disapointed, and you will ensure that we continue to get Amanda’s adventures. You can actually pre-order it now can’t you Mark?

  18. Comment by Heather C — December 1, 2009 @ 1:53 pm

I haven’t read this yet, but I have actually purchased it. Its sitting at home staring at me. With all the fun Mark is in his chats, I can’t wait to rip into it. Its on the top of the pile.

Mark, is Amanda a top? ;)

I have to say I haven’t read this book yet as I just found and bought it the other day but I can’t wait to see what kind of spin Mark gives his zombies. I’m hoping for a zany one with some intellegence involved, from what I’ve read about Mark I know it’s going to be funnier than all get out. There are at least two more in this series one that has to be special ordered (Road trip of the living dead)and one that doesn’t get released until after the first of the new year I believe (Battle of the Network Zombie). At least that’s what Barnes and Noble told me when I asked out them.

Awwwwww……….I know you fuckers can do better than this……This is too mild…..

  26. Comment by Mark Henry — December 1, 2009 @ 5:04 pm

I’m back from the vet trip. Took Linzey to Petco and squeaked all the toys on that aisle to make her love me again after the shots. I’m not too proud to buy love.

So yeah. A few things need responding to…

I’ve seen people making comparisons of what they think the books will be like without having read them, here’s the deal: the Amanda Books aren’t like other books in that there is NO heroine, there is NO hero, everyone is messed up and borderline villainous. It’s just like real life! Only funnier. So yeah, not so much like an urban fantasy as you’d think, or as the cover suggests.

Jaye–You’ve made my cold heart warm a bit today. I can’t wait to see you handle snakes (the kind that slither, the other, I imagine you’re a pro with) and speak in tongues!

Rachel–The Mass Market Paperback is releasing on January 26th 2010 and all over your face!!!! LOL

Belinda–sucks that your B&N doesn’t have Road Trip on an automatic reorder, I’ve yet to run into that problem with any of our B&Ns, up here it’s Borders that doesn’t keep them in stock. Oh well.

Someone asked if Amanda is a top. Which is totally a silly question. Amanda is ALWAYS in control, even when she’s getting pounded, you dirty bird!d

    Keep ‘em comin’, people!

  27. Comment by Zombie Joe — December 1, 2009 @ 5:05 pm

Battle of the Network Zombies is due out February 23rd.

Road Trip of the Living Dead is definitely worth the special order or picking up from Barnes and Noble online or Amazon.

I haven’t read this book yet but it sounds like it will be a great read.

So, who would you pick to play Amanda in the movie? Gil?

  32. Comment by Zombie Joe — December 1, 2009 @ 5:55 pm

What’s with the footnotes? I love those! It is the only time I have seen a real successful breaking of the 4th wall in a novel. I mean how else are we going to get Amanda’s little mental asides to us? ;)

  33. Comment by Jason Lewis — December 1, 2009 @ 6:00 pm

I just woke up from a nap and it looks like I really didn’t miss much

  34. Comment by Mark Henry — December 1, 2009 @ 6:00 pm

Terri Q. — The footnotes are intended to place you in Amanda’s head in two time frames at once. She’s, in essence, the author of the book. And so she comments on what she’s writing in the footnotes. I’m ambivalent about them at this point. I fall in and out of love with them. Though some of the one-liners are the best I’ve written, or spoken.

Carol - I’ve been asked this a number of times and I keep changing my mind. Today, I’m going to go with Vanessa Ferlito and Jay Hernandez as seen here… http://www.imdb.com/media/rm1991152896/nm1089685

And what IS up with those footnotes? ;-O

  42. Comment by Jackie — December 1, 2009 @ 6:46 pm

I am sooo used to zombies being the bad guys/gals, so I am not sure how I feel about them being the main characters. I will be putting this on my wish list, as my check book has forbidden me to buy any books for awhile.

I don’t know if I am supposed to mention the fact that I did 1-5.

  45. Comment by Mark Henry — December 1, 2009 @ 6:48 pm

NIcole!!! They’re called “anusbuncles” and I’ve already answered the footnote question. There was just too much funny to be contained in a single thought. It vomited all over my manuscript like a superhot Roman shower!

  46. Comment by Mark Henry — December 1, 2009 @ 6:50 pm

Jackie - You are in luck, since Amanda isn’t exactly NOT a bad guy. She’s an anti-heroine. But funny in a dark and evil kind of way.

I have not read this book, I’ve seen it poke out of the library’s shelves. Huh. I love snarky humor, and would like to give a try for zombies.

  50. Comment by Alana Abbott — December 1, 2009 @ 7:45 pm

I love me some Happy Hour. It’s snarktastic! Amanda’s narration is brilliant, and I never forget she’s a zombie — in part because it seems so ingrained in her persona now, it’s much of what makes her so awesome as a narrator, guiding us into a strange new world.

As for favorites… it’s been awhile since I read it, and picking out a scene is tough, but one of the bar opening scenes that involves huge diversity of the paranormal is one that sticks in my brain. I was so impressed by how many different cultural supernaturals were in appearance!

    And definitely Gil. Without question.

  51. Comment by Nicole Peeler — December 1, 2009 @ 9:10 pm

Okay, I have to intervene. Mark Henry acts like he’s all “wild” and “crazy” with his “assbuncules,” but it’s all a lie, people!

All that ever happens in Happy Hour is some intensive backgammon, then Amanda helps some old women across the street, and then she prays for salvation.

    It’s all a ruse, people! A RUSE!

Or was that just the dream I had when I took Advil PM instead of Advil the other day and slept 12 hours of crack-sleep?

    *snort* Jasaunnnn! Visual! lol

I think it is important to note that this is a bit like UF because there isn’t really an HEA, it isn’t really a romance though relationships are explored a little.

Mark has carved out a new type of UF that really stands apart from others. There are no awesome gun fight scenes, or tramp stamp heroines (though I do love them too). Amanda is bitchy and funny, but she does somewhere inside her undead heart have a soft spot. Could be decomposing flesh, or it could be a spark of a nuturer. Who knows. You must buy a copy even online (links above in the post) and read the series.

  56. Comment by Mark Henry — December 1, 2009 @ 11:30 pm

Wow Jason. Have we moved into cock talk? I suspect, this is a level of openness not before experienced at a Bitten By Books book chat. I could be wrong. Maybe we missed labia day.

    Jason: Define “nicely shaped.”

    Mark: Define “labia.”

Why would you ask us to define such things if you’re going to bed Nicole???? Trust me, touching yourself is far better when you’re awake….

Awwww. everyone did’t go to bed did they?

I haven’t read the book, and I normally don’t enjoy zombies, but here goes…
    1) If she’s a more human (thinking, less eating) zombie, it would be fine. :)

    Mark makes hilarious vlogs. :)

    2. Heading over soon.

I don’t really like a lot of gross stuff, but I manage to read LKH, so maybe I could handle this. :)

Sorry I was just having a delightful chat with Mark and Kevin…..

  66. Comment by Jason Lewis — December 2, 2009 @ 1:34 am

I guess I could get mad at the peeps that haven’t read it yet or I could comfort and cuddle them, then when they’re nice and relaxed I’ll just fuck them in the butt.

  67. Comment by Mark Henry — December 2, 2009 @ 1:44 am

You’ve gone to far Jason! Hold him down Rachel. I’ll go get…

    The IRON MAIDEN!!!

  68. Comment by Mark Henry — December 2, 2009 @ 1:47 am

R.E.B. — Um. Yeah, no. Amanda is a violent character. It’s part of her nature. She’s also a feeder and her prey is human. I can’t lie, the book is graphic. Way grosser than LKH. By leaps and bounds.

  69. Comment by Jason Lewis — December 2, 2009 @ 1:48 am

See what happens people, I’m going in the Iron Maiden, while you fucks haven’t even read the book yet

I’m not comfortable with zombies, I don’t like them that much.

    2, 3, 5 - all done

Seams it might just be you and I Rachel, These folks aren’t giving me anything to feed from. My own craziness is a hard pill to swallow when taken out of context….

  75. Comment by Lisa Richards — December 2, 2009 @ 8:47 am

Absolutely can not wait to read Mark’s books. I love to listen to him on BBB blogs and if he writes like he talks, I’m a goner.

  76. Comment by Nicole Peeler — December 2, 2009 @ 9:42 am

Okay, I’m awake again. And coughing a lung! It’s so gross! Jason, if it comes out, you could cuddle up to my lung and fuck it, you freak. ;-)

And seriously, guys, Mark’s books are AMAZING. You have to have an open mind, and be ready for some gross, but you should also be ready for some of the FUNNIEST stuff you’ve read, ever, hands down. And there are a lot of deep thoughts, and I don’t mean by Jack Handey, in Mark’s books. I’m a huge fan of the books AND of Mark. Who I never refer to as Mark, btw. I only ever refer to him as Mark Henry. It’s so weird. But he’s a two-namer in my mind.

I haven’t read this book yet but if it is well written, I don’t mind if the main character is a zombie.

Whats up with the new pic up top Rachel? It’s making me miss the one with the chick “tonguing the bud” as Mark would say.
