Forbidden: The Sacrifice by Samantha Sommersby
Psychiatrist Wesley Atherton and design student Katherine Lawson fell in love in the public transportation system. Even though Katherine was engaged to another man, Wes knew she had to be his. He doggedly pursued her, refusing to accept no as an answer. His triumph is short-lived when he narrowly escapes death during an accident on the Tube, but the Grim Reaper is not so easily thwarted. A sacrifice must be made to atone for the soul that he was denied, and he will do anything—possess anybody—to receive his pound of flesh.
Forbidden: The Sacrifice by Samantha Sommersby was action-packed, emotionally charged, and sexy as hell. It took a little while to get the momentum going, but once it did, I was hooked. At first, the characters were too stereotypical, acting and reacting more stiffly than is believable, but they eventually came into their own and began to develop individual quirks and personalities. Wes’ humor, for example, became more and more hilarious as the story progressed. In one of the scenes with Charles, his friend and butler, he says, “I’m sure that there’s a special place in Hell for people like me, an especially nasty corner where they keep all of us that fail to polish the silver.” There’s no huge set-up, just witty, dry humor, and I love it.
Speaking of Charles the butler, he was amazing. His retelling of “The Damien Incident” sent me into a coughing fit of laughter, and he added flavor to every scene he appeared. Equal parts good-natured, humorous, and loyal, Charles is the kind of character that sticks with well after you finished the story.
Switching back and forth from the present to the past was a great way to give us the needed background information without weighing down the story, but I wish it hadn’t been used as often. There were times when the information could have been given during dialogue or internalization rather than a flashback and it would have made the characters seem more real earlier on.
Since I’ve read three of the other Forbidden stories, it was refreshing to see just how Wes, Jennifer, and Will fit together. Now I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I get to see more of the feisty clairvoyant and her delicious brother.
