Masquerade by Melissa De La Cruz
Masquerade picks up right where Blue Bloods
left us. Schuyler Van Alen’s grandmother, Cordelia is gone as a result of an attack by a Silver Blood, vampires that feed on other vampires. Her final words to Schuyler instruct her to find her Grandfather as only he can help her stop the Silver Bloods. So, Schuyler and her best friend Oliver travel to Venice to try and track down her Grandfather who has not been seen for many years. She does find him but he does not seem to be the man that she was led to believe he is and Schuyler and Oliver returned to New York with their hopes dashed.
Back in New York, preparations are in full swing for the Four Hundred Year Ball, an exclusive event where young Blue Bloods are formally presented to Society. Although Schuyler is not being presented, she is required to attend as the only representative of the Van Alen family. Mimi and Jack Force are being presented and Mimi is determined that she be the center of attention. When Schuyler shows up looking exactly like her mother, who has been in a coma for years, everyone’s eyes are on her and her alone. Mimi sees the way her twin Jack looks at Schuyler and she is determined to prevent the pair from being together in any way. The arrival of a new Duschene student, Kingsley Martin, seems fortuitous to Mimi’s agenda. Kingsley is not afraid to break the rules and Mimi finds herself drawn to him and to the dark magic he knows so much about. With Kingsley to guide her, she has no doubt that she can get rid of her rival permanently.
Book two in the Blue Bloods series was every bit as exciting as the first. Melissa De La Cruz spins an enthralling tale with so many twists and turns it is truly a roller coaster ride of a read. Masquerade further develops the characters that were introduced in Blue Bloods
but still doesn’t resolve the mysteries. Quite the opposite, in fact, as the reader is left with even more questions unanswered. Frustrating? Perhaps, but, none the less, a brilliantly effective way to ensure that readers will be racing to the bookshelves for the next book in the series, Revelations. I know that I will.
Book Excerpt: “Schuyler Van Alen wants an explanation for the mysterious deaths of young vampires. With her best friend, Oliver, Schuyler travels to Italy in the hope of finding the one man who can help-her grandfather. Meanwhile, back in New York, preparations are feverishly underway for the Four Hundred Ball, an exclusive gala hosted by the city’s wealthy, powerful, and unhuman-a true Blue Blood affair.
But it’s at the after-party, a masquerade ball thrown by the cunning Mimi Force, that the real danger lurks. Hidden behind the masks is a revelation that will forever change the course of a young vampire’s destiny.
Rich with glamour, attitude, and vampire lore, this second installment in the Blue Bloods saga will leave readers thirsting for more.”
