Guest Blog, Chat and Contest with Author Carole Nelson Douglas
Welcome to Las Vegas 2013! That’s where Delilah Street, Paranormal Investigator, tangles with the quick and the dead. Thanks to Bitten by Books for hosting a virtual release party for Vampire Sunrise, the third of Delilah’s paranormal adventures. Delilah debuted in Dancing with Werewolves and then almost lost her lover and her life in Brimstone Kiss. But she’s back in Vampire Sunrise, and badder than ever!
To celebrate the party mood, here are links to cocktails Delilah cooked up at the Inferno Hotel bar to loosen informants’ lips and irritate the sexy rock-star owner, a reputed Albino Vampire.
Delilah was a 24-year-old virgin, an orphan with a blank-page past and a job as a paranormal reporter on WTCH-TV in Wichita until she saw her exact double, naked and apparently dead and being autopsied on TV in CSI V, Las Vegas.
Del leaped into her estate sale vintage Caddy, Dolly, and headed for Vegas and answers. That’s when she started meeting herself . . . and her double, Lilith, and ghosts in the mirror, any mirror. That’s where she met a sexy Latino ex-FBI guy who can dowse for the dead. Where she adopted a 150-pound wolf-wolfhound cross dog and ran afoul of the werewolf biker gangs and mobsters who run the town, not to mention an ancient empire of vampires. She’s met some allies, but made some paranormally potent enemies. Luckily, she gets an assist from assorted parking valet demons who love Dolly, and celebrity zombies in the form of black-and-white Film Noir characters like Sam Spade and Nick and Nora Charles. She lives in an Enchanted Cottage with a bottomless closet of vintage clothes. She’s been claimed by a lock of a rock-star’s hair that turned to silver and got a permanent, shape-shifting lock on her body.
Trust doesn’t come easy to an unadopted orphan, but there’s nothing Delilah won’t do to save the people, and dog, she’s come to love, and to stop any demonic power from the Vegas Underworld or the dazzlingly evil and dangerous Strip above it.
Thanks for visiting 2013 Vegas and Delilah’s Darkside Inferno Bar. Please enter the Bitten by Books contest and check out Delilah and her series, including the hot-off-the-presses Vampire Sunrise. Here are some questions to help you solve the riddles of Delilah’s past and world.
1. If you had a “silver familiar” like Delilah, a piece of jewelry that could morph into anything all over your body, as decoration or weapon, or even get a little too “familiar,” what forms would you want it to take? Hint: what am I wearing in the film noir photo that the silver familiar appears as in Vampire Sunrise?
2. Delilah encounters the usual vampires, werewolves, and zombies, but they’ve all been “Vegas-ized” into creatures like and very unlike the usual suspects in paranormal fiction. Do you enjoy a fresh take on same old boogeymen and women? What ancient culture would you pick for a new vampire race?
3. Delilah’s next adventure has a working title of Silver Zombie. What kind of creature, and cocktail, would you dream up to embody that title?

Hello, had some time before my next clients, so I thought I’d make good on my RSVP. Hi Carole. *waves8 I requested you on Facebook. (Lisa Mason) and I will join your newsletter (you can never have enough newsletters about books!
Hi Carole! Thanks for joining us here today. This is Carol, your D*C moderator.
I definitely enjoy the fresh take on vamps and other paranormal beings (which is one reason I really like your series). I am continually amazed that you authors can come up with so many variations. I hope that trend continues!

Hi, Lisa,
Glad you could slip in for a visit. I just recently joined Facebook and am amazed by how fast the friends mount up. My newsletter is either delivered e-scribe or print. It’s annual, but I do one-page updates by email when I have time. It’s fun. Especially the readers’ letters I print.
And Hi to Carol! You’re a great moderator. You ask questions that even make panel-weary authors hsit up and think new thoughts in a new way. Thanks for enjoying my offbeat approach. Although you could say writing a mystery series with a crime-solving cat who writes his own chapters had always been on the paranormal side, I really felt free to “stretch the envelope” when I moved into urban fantasy paranormal with Delilah Street.
Maybe that’s why Jon-Anne “can’t wait to read this book.” Good to hear that!
Hello, Carole. I very much enjoyed reading Dancing With Werewolves and Brimstone Kiss, and I’m looking forward to Vampire Sunrise. I wonder, is this series open-ended (i.e., you’ll keep writing them as long as you get contracts for them), or does it have a definite ending (a specific number of books, planned out ahead of time, and then no more)?
For contest purposes:

Hi Carole!!! Just learning about your series today, but it sounds awesome!!! Why did you choose to go with the whole Vegas setting?
Hmmm…tough question on the silver, but I would think it should be an interesting pair of earrings. A necklace can more easily be ripped off in a fight…maybe a cool watch too, especially if the battery never wears our. For culture, how about viking vampire race? I’ve never read anything with the Norse mythology mixed in. As for a beverage, if you are going with Silver Zombie, I am thinking some with vodka and overall clear.
Thanks again for stopping by!!!

Brimstone Kiss
Vampire Sunrise
I also bought Vicious Circle by Linda Robertson and from the link posted above.
I also sent a request on facebook.
Hi! This book sounds awesome. Do I need to read your books in order or can I just jump right in anywhere? I hope I win, sadly I am banned from purchasing books until Santa Claus comes to my house. I tend to buy books he already has waiting for me. ;o)
I think a really cool ring (I LOVE rings) that could morph into a scary dagger would be awesome. I would always have a knife ready at my fingertips. I really like the traditional versions of vampires and shifters but I find I am getting burned out on them. If I find a book with a different type I get excited and the story holds my attention longer.

Hi, Jennifer L.
I’ve written two opened ended series for years, the Irene Alder only-woman-to-outwit-Sherlock Holmes series of eight novels, but those usually stand alone, and the Midnight Louie feline PI series, which has 22 entries and is intended to end at book 27. That is written like an ensemble cast TV series with a three-year run. And it was indeed optioned for a TV series a while back, which would have been creative and wonderful, but of course that didn’t happen.
I love series writing because the writer gets to build and explore a huge and changing “world” with echoes of our own, and work with many characters who are constantly revealing more about themselves and challenging other characters and the readers because of that. Instead of creating a detailed storyline, I let the characters write themselves in and out of their own predicaments. That makes for more surprises for the readers and the writer. So Delilah’s world is intended to be one that can unfold forever, and I have no story arc limiting it to three or five or six titles.
That said, I recognize that, just in the past five years, the pace of life because of instant communication has stepped up and readers are less likely to wait a year for a book. The latest trend is trilogy arcs inside the world. I’ll just have to see if readers still like a neverending story (they do in Louie-world and have been besiging me for years about what’ll I do when that series hits book Z. . . I can’t just quit!
Louie wouldn’t let me stop writing about him either, but the curent series ultimate story arc can end. Or not.
So we’ll see what happens naturally to Delilah. I can go either country of pop.
Hi Carole,
I have not had the opportunity to read your books yet, but I have been intrigued with them since I rea the reviews for Brimstone’s Kiss. I will definitely be picking them up, and reading them for myself. My question for you is.. If you had one perfect day all to your self to do anything, be anything, or go anywhere, what would you do? I am wishing you much continued success.. Happy Reading

Thanks! I think so too. I’ve had cover say more than most authors, because I have soem graphic abilities and havve been with my Louie and Irene publishers for so long. Editors are usually open to polite suggestions from authors who understad their needs and limitations. The artists are the geniuses who come up with the spectacular parts, though; this series has had two terrific artists. My contribution to the Vampire Sunrise cover, which worked, was to suggest Delilah’s and Quicksilver’s brown eyes be blue. That was motivated by a reader who objected that earlier cover eyes hadn’t been blue, and she had a point. Delilah and her dog’s blue eyes are plot elements. The Vampire Sunrise oover already had electric blue elements so the blue eyes really popped because of that. But I’m not a pro artist. I had to see the results before I was completely sure the change would make a good difference. It’s a privilege for authors to be allowed to chime in. Art deadlines are terribly tight and publishing houses don’t have time fool around without good reason.

Thanks for your welcome, Aymee. About the “boring stuff.” Hearing that makes me so glad I took a minute to get on FB a few weeks ago and got my webpage and newsletter subscription a major update just for this week. A writer gets behind on the social part of the job. ::) Glad you’re relishing the Delilah gang!

>Hi Carole!!! Just learning about your series today, but it sounds >awesome!!! Why did you choose to go with the whole Vegas setting?
Me and Vegas have been partners since it was a puddle of neon in the Nevada desert. Well, almost that long. When I was developing the Midnight Louie “Sam Spade with Hairballs” voice and character, I wanted a setting like the “Guys and Dolls” Depression Broadway of Damon Runyon. Glitzy and a bit shady, with chorus girls and gamblers and bookies, but also populated by street people out of a job and trying to survive, genteel con men and women. Vegas seemed the modern version of that, so I went there, long before it got bigger than anyone could imagine. It’s a built-in fantasy world and my “slightly surreal” take on it, as one reviewer put it, through the years, provided a lot of fun. When I was looking for a setting for Delilah, well, wouldn’t it be fun to take Louie’s Vegas to the REAL Darkside?
I knew the Strip pretty well, but “Sunset Park” had echoes of the noir film “Sunset Boulevard” about glamour and deteroriation and death. I kept CSI Las Vegas, but had real corpses autopsied if people wanted to pay for their 15 mintues of fame. I’m commenting on the current morbid mood in thesde dangerous times. And the profit motive is alive and operating between every biarre element of the “now” Vegas. After I came up with the real CSI corpse idea, the actual show started running a viewer contest. The prize? Be bought to Vegas to portray a corpse. :)) Was I on target! In fiction, you want to forecast the truth.
Wow!!! Real CSI…interesting. I’ve dissected a frog, but I’m not sure about a person. I have seen the Body Works exhibit, but its always interesting to see the inside of something you cannot normally see.
2. I haven’t gotten a chance to finish Book One of this series yet! Stupid bookstore doesn’t have it in stock and my book budget for this time of year is basically zero. I did read a snipit and can’t wait to read more! If I don’t get them for Christmas, they are on the top of my list for January’s book list. =) Maybe it’s just me but the cocktail links don’t seem to be working.

Hi Carole! I snapped up the first two books in your new series as soon as they were out, but didn’t see the new one at my B&N today. I’ll order it pronto, bec. this series ROCKS!
‘Course, I’m also a big fan of both your other series, esp. Midnight Louie!
Thanks so much for being on BBB, Carole. And thanks to Rachel for arranging your visit!

Cyd J. Nothing set for close to Tennessee. I’m going to RT Columbus next year. I did tour Tennesee for Louie years ago and really enjoyed the city and loved the Gaylord Opryland, where RT will be next year. So . . . maybe.
Kristen C. Glad to hear you bought the three Delilah books and Linda’s Vicious Circle. Linda told me about this series a couple years ago and it sounds super.
I’m glad Tiah asked about reading the books in order. I write really detailed worlds so it helps to read them in order, but I also try to keep them accessible to new readers. I use a “Meet Me, Delilah Street” and “Previously in Louie’s Life and Times” preface in both series to help new readers get in step.
A ring knife like you imagine would make you rather feline: attractive and harmess looking but always ready to strike. :)) Delilah’s silver familiar can turn pretty awesome . . . or annoying. It has a mind of its own. Yes, I do try to come up with fresher magic and more interesting paranormals than the usual.
Sandy G…..>>I read Dancing With Werewolves and enjoyed the twists you put on the >>supernatural ..and all of the fictional characters that you worked into the book. How did you >>come up with the ..idea of a werewolf biker gang?
My basic series concept is that at the Millennium there wasn’t an apocalypse or a worldwide computer meltdown, but supernaturals started showing up. Some of them were “half-breeds” of their kind. The Lunatics, the werewolf biker gang, are stuck at half human and half-werewolf all the time, so all they can be is petty bad boys. Kinda sad.
Heather C. Ick! Are they still making people dissect frogs? I became chief surgeon on our team of three because I couldn’t stand to see the others hacking up the job so bad. The poor frog deserves respect and a good job. As a mystery writer, I’ve been to several medical examiner facilities and seen more than I’d like. Brains being sliced. The decaying body room. Air accident victims burned and stripped to just a torso. The most affecting was the naked corpse of a young woman slim enough to have been a department store mannequin. She was the only corpse I saw with a stressed look on her face. She showed no marks of death. She was perfect. I learned she was developmentally handicapped and had strangled on a plastic glove, whether intentionally or accidentally, they didn’t know. She was just lying on gurney unattended. I’ll never forget her.
Mindy S. The Vampire Sunrise cocktail link _should_ be working. I tried the Albino Vampire and Brimstone Kiss links out and they did work, but then they didn’t. The poster says they should work. In some cases I found that they’d opened up behind the main page and I just didn’t see them. Evenutally I’ll get them on my webside :))
Do not fear. If you can contact me on my site and send me a snail mail address, I’ll mail you a set of bookmarks with the three recipes.

Hi to Nancy Haddock!!
Vampire Sunrise hits the shelves Tuesday.
Nancy and I were in a RWA group together right after I moved to Texas and I’m so thrilled she’s now published and writing a cool and unique vampire series. I was writing women’s mainstream and romance fiction when we met. I guess all roads lead to paranormal. :)))
Hi Carole, Book sounds wonderful. can not wait to read
Ida
Bea Chan: >>I actually have most of your Irene Adler books in my TBR pile. Why >>the switch to the paranormal genre? And is the Adler series >>finished then?
Never say neve in Bond movies or the pubishing biz.
The Adler series started with a bang in 1990, with Good Night, Mr. Holmes winning American Mystery and RT awards and A New York Times Notable Book of the Year citation. And now it’s fresh out this month in a third reissue, its first trade paperback, because . . . Robert Downey, Jr. is
playing Sherlock Holmes in a new film Dec. 25 and Rachel McAdams plays Irene Adler. This is the start of a franchise, and if it goes, there might be interst in my picking up the Adler series again.
After the first four books, the Adler series had a seven year hiatus, and then I did four more books. So I don’t see why that might not happen again.
Why paranoral? I’d always had some fantasy in most of my novels, no matter the genre. Early in my career I’d written some high fantasy novels that really broke out on their own and were heading for the NY Times list, the sales force said, but that opportunity was toasted.
I suppose the “fantasy” element of a detective cat that I started writing about then was how I kept my fantasy mojo going while I worked primarily in mystery. A judgment was made to retire the Adler series again. That governmental “was made” means that it wasn’t cancelled but circumstances
at the time led to pulling back on the series.
So . . . although my woman-driven early high fantasy series had met with resistance inside the field back then, I looked around and saw the opportuities for women in fantasy had broken way open. I unearthed my long-buried kick-ass gear and ventured out again.
Never say never.
>>Melissa K. aka Draculissa
>> What does Midnight Louie think of your paranormal series? I’m >>absolutely thrilled to hear about it myself.
Louie naturally resents not being the center of attention, but he adapts.
In fact, he stepped right up to narrate a Delilah Street novella in the just-out The Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance 2, when he visits D’s Vegas to help her with a dying vampire case. Since 2013 Vegas is only a bit away from Louie’s contempoary Vegas, some elements of Louie’s series show up in Delilah’s darker world. I don’t know if it’s going to start working the other way.
>>I was getting your newsletter. Have you sent one recently? If so I missed it. Would you be kind enough to make sure I’m on your list? Thank you. In return I’ll buy the first two books in your paranormal series. :-)=
Fair enough. The summer newsletter is the latest. It does happen that lists mysteriously change. Would you sign up for the newsletter on http://www.carolenelsondouglas.com? There’s a new form up.
>>1. I’d want a silver pendant!
Nice! And where would you want the silver familiar to go when you’re having a romantic encounter? Sometimes it seems bold, and sometimes it seems shy.
>>2. Yes to #1 and I’m really into Egyptian Culture so that’s my answer for #2.
Egyptian culture is the one major ancient mythology that DOESN’T have any vampire element. Or . . . didn’t until now. I’d say you’d better hurry to the bookstore, especially for Delilah # 2, Brimstone Kiss.
>>3. Something with “Slow” Gin. *chortle, chortle, gaffaw*

>>Heidi: Hi Carole, your books sound wonderful. I added them to list for my >>children to get for xmas. How did you come up with your characters? Did >>you base them after someone you know? thanks you being here.
Really good question.
I use a lot of real people like Cornelius Vanderbilt and Lola Montez and the Prince of Monaco in my Irene Adler historical novels, and, of course, Holmes, Watson and Irene Adler are based on fictional characters. I always expand on or illuminate what we know about such “icons.”
In the Louie series, I’ll often fictionalize contemporary pop trends, like the Red Hat Society, or TV dancing shows, but the people in these backgrounds are made up, and partly inspired by people I’ve known and seen over the years, so “mash-uped” they’re a whole new character. Some of me goes into characters who’ve had similar backgrounds.
I was a “crusading newspaper reporter” back when we really could do that, so I made Temple Barr in the Louie series a public relations person because I knew many and knew the profession. I also have a strong theatrical, acting, and writing background, and those show up.
Someone like Delilah Street, I wanted to be a completely stand-alone person in a world that’s violently changing. That’s why she’s an orphan and has had a hard time of it. I like characters who are smart, strong, and have a lot to learn. :)) They’re survivors, not victims, but they can make poor decisions or have bad fortune, and must turn not only themselves around, but their worlds, to make them better places.
And, of course, I’ve always felt that a novel without any animal life is an incomplete depiction of the world.
In my early books, I’d put a dog in for background color, then found you don’t put in things you don’t use. So the Irish wolfhound and the Pekingese and Cavalier Spaniel had small but vital roles in my historical novels.
Then along came Midnight Louie. And cats don’t accept bit parts.
I’m back to dogs with Delilah (except for a shape-changing white tiger). Quicksilver is a blue-eyed wolf-wolfhound cross, so you can expect he might have a bipolar genetic inheritance.
In the Delilah series, I also have CinSims (cinema simulacrums) black-and-white film characters blended with zombie bodies and used as entertainment entities in the Vegas casinos. So I get to blend the characters of the films with what we know of the actors. That gives me Sam Spade, Nick and Nora Charles, Dr Frankenstein, Ricardo Montalban and the Invisible Man to play around with. The only historical character I take liberites with in Delilah’s world is Howard Hughes . . . and how!
I’ve probably created hundreds of characters large and small, and they’re all in storage in my head, ready to pop out when needed.

Carole, Thank you so much for hanging with us again! I am so excited about the new Delilah Street book that I can’t think of any questions. Well, maybe “Who is your favorite film character?” : )
1. I’d want my silver familiar to either be a toe ring or an arm band.
2. It’s been touched on a little but not too much (I don’t think), so Norse mythology could be fun.
3. A Silver Zombie could be something like a white zombie (Coconut Cream, egg white, Lime juice, 151- proof, light rum, barbados white rum, & powdered sugar) with a silver Tequila for a kicker.

Oh wow! Can’t wait to start this series. I have book 1 & 2 in my TBR pile and are going to have to move them to the top. I love series but refuse to wait a year for each installment so will generally wait and read 3 or 4 books at a time. I love the familiarity of the main character and the “world” in series and I don’t like to spend half the book getting comfortable. I’ll go ahead and start this series and if I don’t win book 3, buy it immediately as I can’t wait to start this series. I love story lines that are set a bit in the future but not too far that everything is unrecognizable.
Now my questions- What do YOU have in your TBR pile?
and How many books do you plan in this series?
4, 5, & 7 done.
I have Dancing With Werewolves but haven’t had a chance to read it yet. I think it’s going to the top of the TBR pile now. And I’m looking forward to getting the rest of the series, it sounds fascinating.
Yes, I enjoy a fresh take on old boogeymen/women, that’s always fun. I’d pick the Anasazi for a new vampire race because they’re such a mystery. It would be fun to come up with something that explained why they disappeared.

Tiah, yes! I think we should all be catwomen!
Lisa, I understand your saving up a series and reading the first two or three at once. We authors and editors try to reference enough for new and old readers in every book of a series, but it’s a tricky balance. And in fantasy, the world-building is established in the first one or two books (and major characters too), so it’s smoother sailing with book three and beyond.
I have two more Delilah books contracted, which will bring me to five. I really don’t plan that far ahead, so we’ll see.
I’m far enough along in the Midnight Louie epic now that I could tie up the storyline short of the entire Y Z alphabetize title sequence, but am contracted through X so I might as well go the Sue Grafton route all the way. :))
As for writing limited series, Midnight Louie’s first fictional appearance was in a quartet that would have been the first limited series in a category romance line, had his books not been held up at the house.
Even as we write and read, the demands of a multi-media world are changing. I’ve been putting a few URLs and small images in my books for fun stuff that ties or illustrates the storyline. In e-books that will be so much simpler.
My only concern with writing series is that the readers have a satisfying conclusion, no matter what. I’m not worried, no matter what’s called for. We catwomen can twist when we fall to land on our feet.
I RSVP’d! Hi Carole! Great interview! I really enjoyed reading it :) i havent read the books yet - but i hope to read them soon! They are definitely going on my wishlist!
Nice questions!
1. I love rings - & there could be a poison dart that could be in it - I’ll go with that! Any excuse to have rings - & it would be a different kind each day!
2. I *love* the idea of a fresh take on the vamps (my fave), weres, etc… I also like the fresh take on the female character also. I have not read this series YET - but I plan on it!!
As for cultures - I want Ancient Egypt.
Mummies!
3. The creature - well, my mind just invented a crazy zombie (except not an ugly one - a hot Italian model!)
That reminds me - anyone play Zombie Pizza on the Ipod Touch/Iphone?? I got hooked on it over Halloween! I was telling people about it - then it was even mentioned in Entertainment Weekly as “best app of the week” It’s silly yet so addictive! (great, I’m hearing “zombie pizza zombie pizza” in my head!) I’m going away from the question - sorry!
I don’t know what I’d put in the cocktail, but I love the idea of a different drink/theme for each book. I’ll definitely be a taste-tester for those recipes people have submitted!
hehe
My question for you, Carole. I like asking people what book would you pick to go “live on” for awhile? Would you change anything?
If there was anywhere in history you could go back & visit? Where would you go & why?
I will comment again w/links & contest stuff. I enjoyed this interview!
Can’t wait to read your book. Love vampire books!!!!

Very interesting questions. It made me stop and think which was kind of cool lol.
I think my silver would be either a toe ring that can be hidden easily or a ring. Both would be hard to take off by someone else.
Two backgrounds for vamps that I have liked are The Knights Templar. It is usually a curse of some sort. I also like anything to do with Ireland or Scotland. So many legends to use and bend just the right way.
Do you have a specific routine that you follow before you sit down to write?

Could be a zombie car too . . .
First, I much appreciate all your fun and encouraging comments!
Next, you all have such great questions. I’ll try to answer some more!
Libby L: book to “live on.” The Lord of the Rings, because “the road goes ever on and on.”
historical period: I’ve set books in the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth century. No faves. Love history, but favor periods with swords and repartee, preferably together. However, like to rip into a good horror scene.
Lynn K., who loves vampire books: Mine aren’t your usual vampire books. :)) That element sneaks up on you . . .
darchole: fave drink? The Albino Vampire. I mean, white chocolate and raspberry along with vanilla vodka . . . Delilah thinks it up at the Inferno Hotel bar, but she was channeling my favorite tastes.
Roanaid: Thanks for the welcome. You are a welcoming crew! Yeah, the cover is to die for . . . oops.
Deana H: Why Wichita. I cannot tell a lie. Delilah starts out as a paranormal reporter at WTCH-TV. And there’s a lot of Oz in us all. And there’s a lot of paranormal in Wichita, which he fourth book goes back there to deal with.
Virginia DeMarce: Hi, back!!
Toni S: How long have I been writing? All my life. How long a paid professional? Since college, if you count daily metropolitan feature writing and editing. But I really wanted to be an actress. Guess what. Writing lets you do that. The Delilah series has three out and two to come and then . . . time will tell.
Katie D: Hmmm. Your answers to the three questions are veeeery interesting. You certainly won’t be disappointed about one if you read the books.
Lady Graeye: What’s next on my list? A new Delilah, a new Midnight Louie etc. Some short stories. I just did a Zorro one.
Ember J.: Why Vegas? I could write a book . . . it’s an American icon founded by the mob, Sin City, a place that keeps on reinventing itself and that I keep on reinventing. I’ve set about 29 novels there in two series. I never tire of its “endless impossibilites” as they say about “Fringe,” and, in fact, I invented some things before they did it, like the “Love Moat” in 1985, the first interior “river ride” in a Vegas Hotel. They should pay me royalties. And Hugh Jackman played my ongoing since 1990 casino owner “Nicky Fontana” in his VERY short-lived “Laughlin, Nevada” TV show a couple years ago. Yup, coming up with that name was not a coincidence. Someone in Research liked it. Hugh Jackman can play anyone in my books he likes. :)) I’d particularly like him for Max Kinsella in the Midnight Louie series.
Great cocktails. I have only had the chance to read Delilah’s first adventure but it was great. Looking forward to reading the next two.
Any other books or series in the works?
Where would you love to visit that you havent had the chance yet?

1) I wouldn’t mind if a cuff bracelet could turn into a weapon like the witchblade, which actually looks like the cover. Clothes would also be awesome, like wearing a closet you could choose from instantly.
2) I like new approaches to old monsters. I’d choose ancient Egyptians (I see others liked that idea, too; and I’m guessing your 2nd book in this series has that; maybe they could appear in the Luxor to blend in). But I think Anne Rice did it with her Queen of the Damned, Akasha.
3) Almost a werewolf zombie, based on the silver. I see it as something purple or clear pale blue (think like Vitamin Water when it has the less vivid colors) with a mercury silver effect. Something cool and crisp-tasting, either with vodka or silver tequila.
I put Vampire Sunrise on my wishlist (but I’d start with the 1st book, of course). I love ‘Sunset Boulevard’. Maybe the familiar could turn into a tiny circlet crown during romantic encounters. Not too obtrusive. Sloe gin might just make you shuffle like a zombie.
Yay, Catwoman.

I love Carole Nelson Douglas - She Has been a favorite since I first read
Crystal Nights and Crystal Days. She became a saver right then and there. Now I have all of here books (historical, sci-fi, paranormal and mysteries). I am so glad that you have continued the Midnight Louie series and can’t wait for the next book! My husbands birthday in the 24th so I guess he’ll be getting your book for his birthday LOL
R.E.B.: Yes, a silver familiar and a bottomless closet should be accessories for every paranormal heroine, and some noir-era detectives as assistants and to flirt with as well. :))

I never read Anne Rice (shocking, I know!!) after “Interview” when it first came out. Just didn’t grab me. :)) I looked up the Queen of the Damned plot, and other than Akasha being an ancient Egyptian queen, it doesn’t draw much on the complex mythology. The Luxor is safe. The twin Vampire he-she pharaohs have their own hotel-casino, and hell.

Coool! We are sitting at the same bar.

An excellent solution . . . unless the familiar likes to assist. LOL.
Bitten by Books throws a heck of a virtual party!!! So glad to have seen all of you at the festivities. Delilah and I had a great time!
I haven’t read any of the series but it sounds interesting and unique.

Great to hear from a long-time fan. You were there for the very first Midnight Louie series, the romance-mystery quartet! Louie’s not going anywhere but on and on. Hope we all are like him. He makes the Energizer bunnie look lazy. Happy birthday to your husband!!
I have read all of your series! Love Louie and also the Deliahla series! I’m an animal lover, paranormal lover, and a good book lover. You are right up my alley! How long each day do you write? Hi Carole, I don’t stand much of a chance to win your book but wanted to dtop in and say I was so interesting in the interview and looking forward to adding your books to my to get list. I can’t stick around long as I am getting ready for work but still wanted to say hi and good luck with your book.Have a nice thanksgiving also. susan L.
I friended you.
Hi Carole, I just read Dances With Werewolves and I loved it. I can’t wait to read the next two Delilah Street books. I love the silver familiar or jewelry familiar whichever you called it. It’s such a novel concept how did you come up with this idea? I would love to have a silver familiar and hope that it would automataically protect me like it does Dalilah but then at other times aI would love it to take the shape of a wolf as that is my favorite probably because it’s my last name and has been since I was born. I haven’t gotten to try an albino vampire yet but I will. I love the new twist you have put on the old boogeymen and women. Is it hars to think up new twists? I figure that there will be silver screen zombies in this new book your talking about the kind of silver screen characters she met in the first book.

Carole, in case you check back by, I wanted to say thanks for your kind words. It has been a pleasure to work with you.

It’s all about the characters. One of Delilah’s vulnerabilities is a little, white, long-haired dog she “lost” after he courageously bit a vampire who was after her and got blood poisoning. If you remember in the book, her love for Achilles led her to a gesture that “released” the silver familiar. The silver familiar came out of the characters’ interaction into the storyline. I’d never imagined it in advance. That’s what I love about writing!

Yes! Especially with so many paranormal varations already out there!

Hmmm, you may have something there. :))
