Interview, Chat and Contest with Author Diana Laurence
A big welcome to our readers today! Be sure to read to the end of the interview to find out how to WIN the fabulous prizes being offered up.
PLEASE NOTE: This is not a fixed time event, the post just goes live at 12:00 pm Central. You can stop by any time during the day or evening and leave your questions and chat.
PLEASE KEEP SPOILERS TO A MINIMUM. Not all of the readers today have read Diana’s books.
Interview:
Hi Diana!
Welcome to Bitten by Books, we are excited to have you here today!
I would like to thank you taking the time to join us for the question and answer session with our readers. It has been very interesting to get to know more about you and what makes you tick as a writer! Readers, if you haven’t done so already please stop by and get your copy of Diana’s newest book How to Catch and Keep a Vampire: A Step-By-Step Guide to Loving the Bad and the Beautiful.
BBB: What are the most challenging and the most rewarding aspects of writing?
DL: I think the most challenging for me is not having too high of aspirations. I’m my own worst enemy–the more I succeed, the higher I raise the bar. It hasn’t been that many years since just getting a book contract was my goal…but now I find myself thinking New York Times Bestseller list and movie deals. You really can’t think that way in this business and stay sane! I haven’t given up completely on action figures of my characters, though! LOL
Most rewarding is easy: making readers happy. Any day I hear someone really enjoyed a book of mine, or really got what I was trying to say, or really fell in love with one of my characters, that day is officially made for me.
BBB: What is the most ridiculous thing that you have thought about doing to any of your characters but never did?
DL: I thought about having a couple of my most upstanding characters cheat on their mates with each other. I won’t tell you who, lest the fans of that book be absolutely horrified that it even entered my mind. Not only did it enter my mind, I put a good 25 pages worth about it on paper before sanity returned and I tossed it all.
BBB: How do you keep track of your world building?
DL: Notes help, but when you write fantastical fiction, there’s just too much to keep track of.
So I depend upon a couple of key pre-readers. I’m better at overarching concepts than details, so without their help I would never catch all the continuity problems.
BBB: What do you feel are the benefits of the new electronic readers such as Kindle 2 or Sony Digital Book Reader to the environment?
DL: I’ve always been a fan of ereaders. I’ve read books both on an iPaq and my Blackberry. I do love a physical book as much as the next person, but it gives me qualms thinking about the waste in the publishing industry. Did you know that any paperback books that stores acquire but don’t sell in a few months are destroyed? Their covers are returned to the publisher for a refund, but the pages are tossed. Considering that a huge percentage of books aren’t sold, this kills a lot of trees for nothing. I’m really hoping that more publishers adopt print-on-demand technology. That lets a person own a physical book, but no extras are printed and destroyed. That’s the way my own publishing house, Living Beyond Reality Press, does print books, and I publish ebooks as well.
BBB: What impact do electronic readers create on the bottom line for authors in the end? Do you feel they have a negative impact or positive, or no impact at all that you can see?
DL: As an author as well as a publisher, I can assure you that with electronic books, everyone makes more money. There’s no waste, as I said, and no raw materials, and very little overhead. So when one of my ebook titles sells, say, through Amazon Kindle, Amazon makes money and I make money, more so than with a paperback. And meanwhile, the consumer SAVES money! And because there is so little investment at risk for publishers that use these media, undiscovered authors with talent have a chance to be discovered.
BBB: We’ve seen a lot of paranormal fiction with vampires lately. What inspired you to write a how to guide on capturing the undead heart’s of vampires?
DL: I’ve always been enamored of vampires, even as a teenager. But I can’t take credit for the idea for How to Catch and Keep a Vampire. The publishing manager of Sellers Publishing, Robin Haywood, came up with the concept of a vampire dating how-to book. She was googling the subject, looking for someone to write it, and found me. Obviously I seemed like an authority. LOL At any rate, it was terrifically flattering to have a publisher court me to do a book–speaking of things that ought to make one satisfied with one’s success!
BBB: Can you tell us about your vampire dating guide and your Bloodchained series?
DL: How to Catch and Keep a Vampire is a comprehensive guidebook on establishing and maintaining romantic relationships with immortals. It explains why we are drawn to these beings and why hanging out with them can actually be a healthy and beneficial activity. There is all the information you need to understand and get along with them, balance your ‘vampirophile life’ with daily life, deal with objections from others, and avoid the potential dangers. Along the way you’ll meet my various sexy, funny, fascinating vampire friends, and learn from my mistakes and successes. People tell me it’s all pretty hilarious, but surprisingly meaningful too.
Meanwhile, about Bloodchained: I wrote the original novel in 2007 with the help of 63 readers and fans. As a team we selected the theme and plot and developed the basic concept of the book, and a smaller team assisted with the writing and editing. Two genres tied in the voting: vampire and fantasy. So the book is about a fantastical new race of blood-drinking immortals, called the Roicans, and takes place in a Renaissance-style environment. The Roican’s origin stems from the eternal love of the race’s progenitors, Heroica and Ireogot, whose powers depend upon their drinking of each other’s blood. So in that way, it’s a twist on the vampire theme. Some Roicans are good and wonderful, others are evil and power hungry, but they are all good-looking! LOL Bloodchained has been a very popular title for me.
Bloodchained and the 2009 sequel Bloodchained II: The Secret of Secrets are plot-driven suspense stories with plenty of sensual romance. There’s also Sign of the Bloodletters, a short comic book that takes place during the action of the second novel. I had a wonderful time getting to do a comic book! Everything you’d want to know about the series is at www.bloodchained.com. Oh, and I have a whole bunch of other books, novels, short story collections, and a couple non-fiction titles, published as well.
BBB: Do you have any personal traits that you have written into the characters of your Bloodchained series?
DL: I’m a traditionally romantic but quite independent and ambitious woman. This is what you get when you raise a girl on guy’s science fiction combined with Broadway musicals! LOL So my female protagonists, like Grace Gilder, tend to be like that. They are strong characters capable of heroic action, but also are attracted to men who make them feel a little submissive and vulnerable.
BBB: If your Bloodchained series had a theme song what would it be?
DL: That is a great question! Actually, it has a theme song! My friend, fan and illustrator, CC Roger, with whom I did the comic book, composed one. It’s called “Roican,” and is the background music used in the vampire dating video I did. She originally composed it as the music for the flash version of the comic, which you can view for free online (see http://www.bloodchained/sotb.html). I think it’s uncanny how the music captures the haunted and suspenseful mood that is often prevalent in the books.
BBB: I exchange the occasional tweet with Sookie Stackhouse on Twitter. Has she read your vampire dating book and what did she think?
DL: Well, there are a total of three Sookie Stackhouses who are Facebook fans of the book, so for sure one of them is real! Which suggests that yes, she has…but unfortunately I can only speculate her reaction. Although I didn’t see “True Blood” or read Charlaine Harris’s books till after I wrote HTCAKAV, I was amazed when I did. With a few exceptions, the True Blood vampire world is a very good fit with my own. And I find fans of the books and show generally really get my book. I think Sookie would laugh quite a bit over it, and over all think it sound advice. She does a fine job at vampire dating, to my mind.
BBB: How much time do you spend offering vampire relationship advice to readers?
DL: A lot more time now that the book is out! I have had a lot of fun doing Q&A’s both in person, on the radio, and on the Web. People come up with the most clever questions on the subject. And my brain seems to be designed in such a way that I always find an answer in there somewhere, no matter how original the question. Fortunately, it’s not like anyone can prove my answers wrong! LOL
BBB: What is the most important tip for our readers to remember when they go out looking for their undead heroes?
DL: On the positive side, I’d say don’t just look in the clichéd locations like haunted houses and goth bars. You need to think outside the oblong box. I’ve spotted vampires in places like mall food courts and laundromats! And on the negative side, be aware that not all vampires are safe to hang around with…and unfortunately, sometimes the dangerous ones are the most sexy!
BBB: Do you ever bring these guys home to meet the family? What is their reaction to your startling revelations and the company you keep?
DL: Fortunately my husband and daughters are used to me and consequently nothing I do surprises them. I’ve dabbled in worlds occupied by aliens, pirate ghosts, and guys who can steal your heart’s desire with the power of their minds. My writing a vampire dating book seemed pretty par for the course!
BBB: Can you tell us what the secret of the red ribbon is?
DL: I could, and I’m not saying it hasn’t been leaked already by a reviewer or two, but why spoil it for you? Far better to get a copy and read all the juicy details.
BBB: What else do you currently have in the works? When can we expect your next book?
DL: I’m in discussions with Sellers Publishing about my next book–I can’t say much more right now about the subject matter or timing, not sure yet. I published five books in 2009 so am happy to have a little slower pace next year! But rest assured I won’t stop writing till they pry the keyboard out from under my cold dead fingers. LOL
BBB: Where do you see the paranormal/urban fantasy genre headed? Can you see it slowing down in the near future, or do you think that the immediate future is pretty bright for it?
DL: I know these days some people are suffering from vampire overkill (there’s an oxymoron), but they are people who weren’t passionate fans of the genre in the first place. People loved paranormal fiction long before Twilight came along, and those people will continue to be fans. Meanwhile, the popularity of paranormal themes in books, TV and film has attracted new fans. So yes, I think the future is very bright for the forces of darkness! LOL
BBB: Do you have any plans for book signings/readings anytime soon? If so, where can our readers find you?
DL: Unfortunately, I just finished up my whirlwind of appearances for the launch of the book. Nevertheless, through the magic of technology, my presence is just a few clicks away for any readers dying to experience it! Great interview (I RSVPed in advance). Do you ever confuse your characters with others while writing? I’ve read a few series and when I try to discuss them with someone I sometimes confuse what characters did in one series with what others did in another.

Hey everyone, this is going to be so fun!
Carol, thanks for kicking things off beautifully with a Conner question (she knows he’s my favorite vampire, sigh). Imaginative guy that he is, Conner loves speculative fiction of all kinds. His fave contemporary authors are Neil Gaiman, Stephen King, Robin Hobb, and yours truly.
Stephanie, I can’t recall ever mixing up my characters–they are all pretty vivid in my mind. However, I have a chronic problem calling my characters by the wrong names. Just ask my editor how many times while writing Bloodchained I called Finn Liam and vice versa! Yet another reason why I depend upon my editor. Shout out to you, Sarah!

Hi Diane!!
That was a great interview and very informative. I just ordered Bloodchained after I read this interview, I can’t wait until it comes. I am very intrigued with your series, I love Vampire novels, and I always love when a author takes them in a different unexpected direction. My question for you is.. If you had one day to do anything, be anything, or go anywhere, what would you do?
I am wishing you much continued success, and i will be looking out for your novels on all the bookshelves. Happy Reading

Tawania, thanks so much for ordering Bloodchained and for your kind words! I should mention that other than How to Catch and Keep a Vampire, my books have not been broadly sold in stores. They are definitely available from all the online retailers though, or you can order them in from any bookstore. As for your question on what I’d most like to do for a day, wow, that’s a cool one. If supernatural powers are allowed, what I’d love most to do is scoot all around the world, peeking in on people reading my books. If I could visit with those readers, even better! Nothing could be more fun.
Amanda, glad you enjoyed the interview! Well, it probably won’t surprise you that Conner and I like some of the same authors. I love Gaiman, King and Hobb, and of course the Bard too! But other favorites of mine are C.S. Lewis, Jane Austen, William Goldman, John Irving and Charlaine Harris. As for those who have supported my writing, #1 would be my husband David who does so much work at home so that my time is free. My parents and grown daughters Katie and Amanda are wonderful too. And I am lucky to have some amazing fans who demonstrate their love of my books in wonderful ways. They are the best!
Sandy, I’m actually hoping to write my next book on the subject of supernatural dating. Stay tuned, I hope I will know soon what’s going to happen!
Thanks, Patsy! Well, my books are definitely interesting to me! LOL But I have a good feeling the fans of Bitten by Books are my kind of readers.
Lisa, of course you need this book! LOL And with “New Moon” coming out this weekend in theaters, I’m sure a lot of people will need werewolf dating info soon.
TMarie, I love that you enjoyed the vampires on the http://www.howtocatchandkeepavampire.com site! Make sure you become a fan of the Facebook page, those guys turn up there a lot. You’ll be able to find the book in just about any bookstore, but like I said above, for other titles, order them in or get them online.
Cyd, my favorite vampire of all time is the luscious and brilliant Conner. But of the vampires you may have heard of, I guess my top three are Eric from “True Blood,” Silas from Neil Gaiman’s “The Graveyard Book,” and Frank Langella’s version of Dracula from the 1979 film.
Mindy, thanks for the compliment on the title! That “bad and beautiful” juxtaposition is pretty tantalizing, eh? So, what idea have I had that surprised me the most? Hmmm. I think my deciding to create a deck of romance fortune telling cards based upon my characters was pretty out there. I sure had fun doing it though!
Sue, thanks for the compliment, and for signing up for my newsletter!

Jon-Anne, it might be a tie between C.S. Lewis and Neil Gaiman. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia are so wonderful, and I adore his science fiction trilogy as well. Just a warm, genius, incredible man. And Gaiman is just so crazy imaginative. He can be funny, or terrifying, and anywhere in between. He’s also the one male author I’ve encountered who could write a sex scene that indicated an understanding of both sides of the experience. LOL So C.S. Lewis is like the angel on my one shoulder, and Neil Gaiman is like the devil on the other!

Hi Diana
I haven’t read any of your books, but I have a couple on my TBR list. This new book sounds like fun so it will be my fisrt purchase. Did you find it harder to write this book since you were asked to then on you came up with on your own?

Thanks, Belinda, for wanting to read my books and joining my newsletter group! You would think this book would be harder to write, but in fact it was one of the easiest. As soon as I heard the idea and gave it some thought, I honestly felt like I had been preparing mentally for years to address the subject matter. Not only do I really dig vampires, but I have made something of a study of why people are drawn to characters that are dark and dastardly. Oops, vampire Mordred is here reading over my shoulder and he objected to being called “dastardly.” He protests, but I can tell he actually considers it a compliment! LOL

Fallon, you are a whirlwind, girl! So you asked what other genres I’d like to write. Well, in my Soulful Sex story collections I have really run the gamut. Let’s see…fantasy, science fiction, historical, contemporary, paranormal, Regency, suspense. I’ve written about pirates, soldiers, mermaids, and so on. I even wrote about an alien abduction in Victorian times. I haven’t written any western or true crime stuff I guess, but those really aren’t my bag. But my “last frontier” for genres I dearly wished to write in was conquered this year when I wrote a comic book!

Elaine, of course I have, do you think I made this book all up out of my head? LOL Well, while we’re on this subject of “reality,” I should tell you that a couple months back someone posted on Answers.com “Is the book How to Catch and Keep a Vampire fiction?” I was pretty tickled to see that, and posted my answer here: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Is_the_book_‘how_to_catch_and_keep_a_vampire’_fiction&updated=1&waNoAnsSet=1 Might be interesting for you guys to read!

My reply to Elaine got lost in cyberspace, I will try again! Elaine, of course I’ve kept and caught vampires, do you think I made this book up out of my head? Hi Seri, I hope some funds fly your way soon! From the look on Mordred’s face, I think he wants to rob an ATM for you. Actually, the dreaded Demon of Procrastination does not really plague me. I’m more often tortured by the Demon of Always Trying to Work Ahead. I seriously sometimes have to force myself to goof off. I likewise was born without a writers block gene. Lucky me, especially during years like this when I put out five books in eleven months! But I finally put the kibosh on myself and planned a January vacation in Vegas. All work and no play makes the vampires demand that you party at once or face their wrath.

Hi Diana!!! Thanks for stopping by. I see that one of your goals is a movie deal. What book would you want to do, and do you have a dream cast picked out?

Ok, I cannot wait to read this book. All the questions and answers have me jumping in my chair waiting to get off of work to go get it.
I RSVP’d also.

Hi Heather! Can’t I do movies of them all? LOL Actually, I think it would be great if How to Catch and Keep a Vampire were made into a movie, with me played by Renee Zellweger (love her! and no, alas, there’s not a resemblance). The cool thing would be they would have to cast the eleven excruciatingly attractive vampires in the book. I would love to watch the auditions. I have yet to see anyone gorgeous enough to play Conner, but it would be fun trying to find him! By the way, you can see the vampires’ portraits on the book page on my site (just click on Ethan) or in the photos area of the Facebook fan page (look for “Vampire Portraits by CC Rogers”). They are hot, my friends! (Yes, yes, Mordred…especially you.)
Shanna, I love your enthusiasm! Go get that book and be sure to email me when you’re done with your thoughts!

I can’t wait to get on the rest of your books! Its so cool to be friends (albiet on FB) with an published author that is so real and down to earth. If I ever make it to Milwaukee, I’ll give you a call… we’ll do coffee… (maybe we can invite Mordred to drop by…)

Hi Toni, you asked the most popular question today! Clearly there are a lot of wolf-lovers in the crowd, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Since I covered that question, I’ll reply to the “how long have I been writing.” I actually started writing fiction when I was in the 4th grade. My first short story was published by ‘Teen magazine when I was 13. So that’s a long, long time, yoiks!
Hi Renee! Mordred is flipping out seeing you here. Flipping out in his sinister, dignified way of course. You are the best! Thanks for saying all that nice stuff! And I’d love someday to get to Fresno so I can see you there. I really hope your friend likes the book as much as you did. And I can’t wait to hear what you think of my other books! Rock.

I RSVP’d - Hi Diana! What a fun book -’i'm adding it to my wishlist!
I’ll post again with links - but I wanted to comment & ask a question. Pick 3 Vampires from literature/film/tv you would invite over for a dinner party!
Who would they be?
If you could trade places with anyone in history *for the day* — who would it be & why?
I saw “pirates” mentioned in your interview. I want to know more about that!! What story is that?

I’m back! Playing catchup until “V” comes on.
Time for more fun!
And I see those posts with the links are up now! I figured out how this works…they were just on hold, aha!
Okay, as promised, Raonaid (and what a lovely name, BTW)…I would love to collaborate on a writing project with Neil Gaiman. He is like a dark, reverse version of me, so it would be really interesting finding a way to combine styles. In fact, it was this very concept that inspired my short story “Nate and Erica Write a Sex Scene” (from Soulful Sex: The Darker Side, 2009). Nate is a famous science fiction writer, Erica is a famous romance author, and they are working on a short story together. I had a blast writing in their two different styles. I really enjoyed posing as a man’s man and thinking and writing as he would.
Libby, too many good questions!
Wow, three vampires at a dinner party…well, that would need to be Bill, Eric and Godric from “True Blood,” wouldn’t it? Talk about three different types of vampires! And I love them all. As far as trading places with anyone in history, that’s a tough one. Oddly, what comes to mind is something like being Peter Jackson when “Lord of the Rings” premiered. To have wanted for so long to create something so epic, and have the public (even Tolkien fans) respond with such amazement and delight, must have been unbelievably rewarding. As for the pirate story, it’s called “Dead Man’s Chest” and is included in Soulful Sex: The Paranormal, Science Fiction and Fantasy Collections.
[Reply]
Moonsanity, you’re very welcome! As far as a writing schedule, I have the basic principle that I write as much as I can, whenever time permits and there is nothing else pressing. As I’m sure you’ve found, modern life is too complex and ever-changing for many of us to have the luxury of set schedules.
You’re welcome, Aymee…oh, and I love Count von Count too! So cute, singing about batty bats… LOL
And Shirley joins the clamor for a werewolf guide!
Shirley, as far as people accidentally ending up “caught and kept” themselves, I’ll let you in on a secret. That’s pretty much what ALWAYS happens with vampires. There’s a lot in the book about how they cannot be tamed, including how I learned that very valuable lesson the hard (but fun) way from my vampire friend Gunnar. Okay, now Mordred is smirking. He’s having too good a time reading this stuff over my shoulder.
Kayla and Jessica, thanks!

Rebecca, I’m glad your interest was piqued! That story is called “Claude’s Laboratory” and is also from Soulful Sex: The Paranormal, Science Fiction and Fantasy Collections (2007). The official little blurb is “A young Victorian Englishwoman finds herself abducted by a charming alien researcher who is studying human sexuality…and that’s only the beginning of her problems.”
There is a ton of information on my Web site about all these titles, and some excerpts too. Just click on “works” from the home page and you’ll find it all! Including handy “buy” links for each book to a number of online retailers.
But feel free to ask me about anything, folks. I’m happy to chat away about these stories and characters as much as you like!
[Reply]
Arwen, you reinterated the question of the day. And believe me, I don’t mind a bit that you are all asking. You can be sure I’ll be reporting back to my publisher about all this interest!
Christine, I have seen that title come up on Google but had no idea what it was, so thanks for enlightening me. Actually, the title of my book was developed by my publisher, with a word change from me here and there. I really do like it though…except for being so long that even the initials go on for quite awhile (”HTCAKAV”)!
I’d like to toss in here how thrilled I am that so many of you have friended me on Facebook and declared yourselves fans on the HTCAKAV Facebook fan page. Love it!

Do you have a daily pre-writing ritual? If so, how did it first come about?

Marnie, I guess I got recruited for this book by having something like a million words on the Web by now. Between blogging, columns, essays, free stories and books, Web sites, etc., etc., there is a lot of me out there. And I just came up on my editor’s Google search for “tame a vampire.” There’s a lot to be said for putting yourself out there and just seeing what happens! The vampire dating question that most astonished me was if you need to take special precautions during “that time of the month.” Well, with beings that are driven wild by blood, um, good question! For my answer, go to the howtocatchandkeepavampire.com site, click on the Ask the Author tab, and the link “see the second week’s questions.”
I’m off on another break, time to watch “V” with my husband! Back soon…

Oh, those nasty aliens on ABC… Hi, I’m back!
Lisa, vampire and paranormal romance is definitely here to stay…Pandora’s box is open! As for my TBR pile, I just started “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” (a hoot so far), and after that it will be “The Book Thief.”
Sarai, as you guess, I did have a storehouse of vampire lore at ready hand when I started the project. One of my greatest resources, as you learn in the book, is my vampire friend Colin. He was born a slave in Jamaica in the late 18th century, ended up in England where he changed his name and got a doctorate from Oxford. He’s a treasure trove of information about vampires, their history and customs. And he’s a real cut-up too.
Heidi, thanks for checking out my vampires! As for how I came up with them, all I can say is, vampires really choose to come to you. So you have four regular vampires in your life? Sounds like four may be just the number that fits you. I’m certainly closer to some of mine than others…obviously I spend the most time with Conner…and yes, Mordred, I see you there, no one has forgotten you’re overseeing all this with those stern black eyes of yours!
[Reply]
Lady Graeye, I’m sorry you haven’t been able to find a copy of the book! (Dare I dream all the copies have been snatched up? LOL) It should be in stock at Barnes & Noble, Borders, Waldenbooks, Books-a-Million, Chapters, Indigo, Waterhouse, HMV and lots of indie shops too. There’s always online though! As for the source of my ideas, it’s the bottomless pit of the imagination. I believe at the bottom of all humanity there’s this giant dark ocean we all tap into, where there’s a nearly infinite amount of material. You just have to dig! And I wonder if this analogy has anything to do with my hearing “Rock Lobster” on the radio today. There’s a Bikini Whale! LOL
Jackie, damn straight the world needed a guidebook! I was terrified there were people all over attempting vampire dating without any guidance. If you were here to get a good look at the fetching but intimidating Mordred, you would think twice about dallying with his kind when uninformed.

There is really no time for a routine! Must write immediately! But I will tell you one interesting thing about my brain. Typically I work out the next passage I’m going to write while lying in bed at night before I sleep. It doesn’t come out exactly the same when I’m typing…in fact sometimes it’s altogether different…but I guess mind needs to do that rehearsal ritual first.

“HOCKEYVAMPIRESS”??? Okay, you have to explain that to me, because for four years I did the weekly NHL humor ezine Hockey Snacks and I also run Guy Carbonneau’s Tribute Site. If there is a hockeyvampiress in the world, I need details. Email me, Shell! (dianalaurence@wi.rr.com) But to your question, to boost my muse I spend some quality time with him in my head. It’s those dark secret fantasies that get the creative juices flowing more than anything, even if they have nothing to do with my writing. (And by the way, one of my best loved stories is about a hockey player, “Je t’aime, Etienne,” from Soulful Sex Volumes I & II!)
Okay peeps, time for this little author to hit the hay. I look forward eagerly to catching up with you all in the morning, so keep those questions and comments coming! G’night, and do let the vampires bite!

Morning all! My, we had a busy night here! I’d better get to this…
Okay Deana: Thanks for putting me on the TBR pile! And while I was inspired to write this book by my publisher bringing me the idea, I have to say, it was the perfect topic for me. I love explaining to people why it is they are drawn to the characters they are. And certainly it was no hardship spending the time with the vampires. (Mordred’s not up yet, so I not just saying that to appease him, LOL.)
Dina, indeed, I hope you find the book educational as well as fun!
Rebecca, it’s just amazing that while I was asleep, you bought one of my books and read the whole thing! I’m so thrilled! Isn’t technology great? I should explain here that while HTCAKAV is only in paperback, all my other titles are available as ebooks. Soulful Sex: The Paranormal, Science Fiction and Fantasy Collections comes as one paperback volume, but three separate ebooks. So if you like just sci-fi, you can get it that way, like Rebecca did. Thanks again! Oh, and BTW, “Spacewrecked with Joel Fennimore” was dedicated to my hero, Les “Survivorman” Stroud. He’s actually read a couple of my books!
[Reply]
Thanks, Michelle, I hope you’ll love the vampire book just as much!
Thanks, Jessie!
Steph, so many books have inspired me, it’s hard to pick one author. Most recently I loved “Life of Pi”…it was the kind of book that makes me feel I don’t know how to write at all! But anyway, since I started writing in grade school, I’d have to say people like P.L. Travers (Mary Poppins), Edward Eager, and Dr. Seuss! LOL
Dovile, sometimes I just make up names, and sometimes I actually go online and look at baby names sites to pick something that seems like a good fit for a character. The original Bloodchained novel was an interesting situation in that the main characters were all named by the people in the group of 63 that helped me write the book. That was fun! Oh, and the only “character” with my name is the one in HTCAKAV.
REB, thanks so much! Especially for sharing the video. That was the first time I did anything like that and I was really happy I didn’t come out looking like a loon. Well, a little like a loon…I am talking about vampire dating after all. LOL
Ruby, I did very nearly convert, but to learn that fascinating tale you’ll have to read the book! The reasons why it rocks to be a vampire include perfect health, immortality, and extreme hotness. The reason I chose not to convert may surprise you!
Okay, I’ll be back for more later in the morning, everyone!
[Reply]
So, Diane, any chance that Conner will stop for a visit here at BBB?

Lisa, glad to have you in the fold! Conner has a few things in common with my husband: His lithe physique, his sense of humor, and his great vocabulary. Although David doesn’t know any Middle English. Conner responded to this by babbling at me in Middle English…big tease, I get one word out of 20!
TMarie, you are sweet! And it HAS been a blast, I gotta tell you!

So, Conner, if you had to choose, what would you say is your favorite Shakepeare play?

Carol, I’m going to let him dictate his reply to you: “Without doubt, miss, I would choose ‘Romeo and Juliet.’ Not for the plot, though it is splendid, but for the poetry that abounds. I have more than once adapted from it, for example, ‘See how she doth tip her neck into her hand! Would that I were a glove upon that hand that I might bite that throat!’ And there is also that great bit where the Nurse nearly blows away in her huge hat. Comedic gold, really.” Thank you, Conner…well spoke! LOL

Hi Diana,
couldn’t find where you had answered my question (comment #50) so I’ll ask it again.
Which was the hardest book for you to write & why?
Thanks,
Sharon K

Sharon, that’s because I missed it! MY BAD!!! I bet at the time, Mordred was doing something distracting. (”Sure, blame the vampire,” Conner just said to me.) Okay, the hardest book for me to write was the sequel to Bloodchained, which I just released a few weeks ago (Bloodchained II: The Secret of Secrets). If you’ve ever heard another author say that it’s hard to write sequels, well, I concur, particularly in the romance genre. Normally in romance much of the plot and tension is about the hero and heroine hooking up, and that gets accomplished by the end of the first book. So if you want to keep those beloved characters around in the second, and still have romantic tension, it’s a challenge! Especially when the nature of their relationship is that it’s pretty perfect, which is what happened with these two. I really had to struggle with keeping them as significant romantic characters while introducing other suspense and romance. But after a lot of blood, sweat and tears, I think I got it done. The book is too new for much feedback yet…so if any of you read it, please relieve an author’s mind and tell me what you think!

Thanks Diana, now worries!
At least my cats don’t think so.
Now Conner if Diana hadn’t blamed Mordred she would have had to blamed the cat.
Some times that’s not a good thing.

That should have been ‘no worries’. Spell check doesn’t help when you spell the wrong word right.

Shoot, Sharon, I could have blamed the cat! Any one of my three cats, in fact! And, as usual, I totally missed your typo until you corrected yourself!
