Release Party, Chat and Contest with Author Sharon Ashwood

Posted under Chat, Contests, Guest Bloggers, Site News by Site Hostess on Monday 16 November 2009 at 12:40 pm

At the end of Ravenous, the first Dark Forgotten book, the fate of police detective Conall Macmillan was unknown. For a secondary character, he’d managed to get into a lot of trouble. To wrap up his plot thread in the last few chapters wouldn’t have done his story justice, so Scorched is all about what happened next.

I’m so happy I had the opportunity to write this book. This is the story of an ordinary man who makes a mistake and ends up paying with his soul. After his run-in with a demon, Mac’s become an outcast, shunned by everybody he once knew. But, he still likes watching sports, cracking wise and having a beer. He misses his friends and, most of all, his job at the precinct. He desperately wants his old life back.

Mac is one of the good guys, a smart cop used to fighting for justice. His impulse to help other people leads him to a monster-filled prison called the Castle, and Mac has to kick more than a few scaly backsides to survive.

Things start to look up when he takes a case from the beautiful vampire, Constance—but that brings other questions to the forefront. As Mac becomes more deeply involved in the mystery of her son’s kidnapping, his last scraps of humanity begin to fade. A solution will cost him any chance of resuming his old life. Helping others is what defines him, so which is worse: being a monster in fact, or losing himself by playing it safe?

Scorched is a story about people and how their feelings change destiny—so what if they have fangs or bat wings? Mac being Mac, he faces some pretty big questions head-on. What makes someone a monster? What sacrifice is too large to redeem a world broken by selfishness? And, how much redeeming does it take to make an outcast like him a hero again?

The heroine, Constance, has her own difficult questions to face. And so do you! Here are a few to get the discussion rolling:

1. One of the big debates in the book is whether or not vampires, werewolves and other monsters should have equal rights to humans. What do you think? Would you want a vampire living next door?

2. What makes a hero truly heroic? How much do they have to risk?

3. One of the things I try and include in my books is a lot of humour. Is verbal banter between characters something we’ve come to expect from paranormal fiction?

“Sharon Ashwood has a way of making inanimate objects into fully-functioning characters. In Ravenous, it was a house with a taste for trapping humans. In Scorched, it was the Castle.
The beasts and beings that make the Castle—both in name and deed—brought a fantastical element to the story. It was as if the scenes were being played out in front of you and all you had to do was reach forward and you could touch the mythological beasts trying to survive in their ever diminishing world.”

This quote from Jackie at BBB had me racing to add this series to my wishlist. Can’t wait. Thanks Jackie for the great review! This is what a good book should do- make you forget that you are reading and touching this other world. Thanks Sharon for creating this illusion and taking us away from it all.

    Hi Sharon,

Your series is new to me, but it sounds very interesting. To tackle some of the questions you ask, if the vamps and weres are similiar to normal people ala Twilight and most urban fantasy, then I definitely think they deserve the same rights. They have thoughts, feelings, and should enjoy the same as everyone else. I’m dodging the hero question, because I have no idea. :) However, I love some humor mixed in with the seriousness for my urban fantasy. Honestly, its pretty much a requirement, and I think banter is probably the best way to add that in. Life is no fun if you are serious all the time. I’m pretty sure your head will explode.

Question for you: How did you first become interested in writing uf?

Hi Sharon! Thanks for being here with us today! I haven’t read your books yet, but from the reviews that I’ve now read, they sound great! Already added to my tbr list! To answer your questions:
    1. I don’t think I would mind having a vampire living next door, as long as they didn’t try to kill me or my guests that is, I guess it would depend on what kind of vampire world rules we’re going by (I don’t know yours).
    2. I don’t think someone has to risk a whole lot to be truly heroic. Some of the people that are the biggest heroes in my life were just the people that have been the best people that they can be for the ones that they love.
3.Yes, I think verbal banter is something beginning to be expected in paranormal books, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be in them all. Variety is a wonderful thing.
    My questions for you:
    1. What authors have been most inspiring to you?
    2. As a writer of paranormal, how much do you believe in the paranormal existing in our world?

I have not read Ravenous but I love books that end with cliff hangers so you must read the follow up book to discover the fate of other characters. Does Scorch end paving the way for a third book?

Also I’d like to add that I wouldn’t mind living next to a vampire. There are a lot worse people to live next to. As long as they keep their yard mown and their trash out of my pasture. hehe Hey I am all for equal rights.

Vampires, werewolves, etc. should have equal rights because with the way some of us humans behave leaves one to question:Who really is the untamed one? So, I wouldn’t mind if a vampire lived next door.

To answer your first question I would say that the vamps, werewolves, etc. should have equal rights. I would be okay with a vampire living next door as long as I was made aware that they are vampire. That way I would know what to expect.

    1. One of the big debates in the book is whether or not vampires, werewolves and other monsters should have equal rights to humans. What do you think? Would you want a vampire living next door?
–I think they should. They’re contributing to the economy aren’t they? Plus if they have legal rights, they may think harder about breaking the law (or at least think twice about it) and their paranormal community as a whole may come down harder on them since they have more at stake then the average human.

    2. What makes a hero truly heroic? How much do they have to risk?
–I’ve always held that for a hero to really be a hero they have to be willing to go outside their comfort zone for the people or for the heroine. Powers or ability don’t automatically enter you for the hero squad–use those powers to help people is a good start. Use your super-speed to clean the house would probably endear you to just about anyone honestly. It doesn’t always have to be about risking your life for someone else.

    3. One of the things I try and include in my books is a lot of humour. Is verbal banter between characters something we’ve come to expect from paranormal fiction?
–I expect it in my paranormal fiction, but I look for it specifically. I can’t name too many times when I’ve been upset that humour or snark has entered into my book (usually if its tragic dark fantasy, I tend to look askance at it. don’t have the hero cracking jokes while he falls into a pit of lava to save the world…). I like heroes and heroines that can be…not exactly light-hearted, but perhaps have a lighter demeanor at times.

    Hi Sharon,
Just wondering if you have any input on the covers of your books. Also, if in your free time you prefer to read within the same genre you write or outside of it. And who?
I also think that witty/funny banter is important in paranormal/fantasy books, if only because there’s something just kind of ridiculous about it (not mocking, I love it!) If an author takes their writing about vampires, werewolves, goblins, etc. too seriously, it almost automatically becomes kind of silly.

    Hi Sharon,

Having avampire live next to me would not bother me. They should have equal rights just like everyone else. Maybe if there was vampire or werewolf living next to me maybe my family would stay away. that would be a blessing.
hero can be someone who is just there to be your friend in a tuff time or someone who puts their life on the line for you. there are many different kinds of hero’s.

I think humour is needed to make a book good.If it is to seriuos then it starts to get boring.

My question is how did you come up with your character Mac? Do you know someone that you feel is a hero?

I’ll tackle the humor question. Yes, I guess I do expect humor and sarcastic banter in the paranormal books I read. First, I love this type of humor in t.v. and movie too and in real life. My husband and I are masters of sarcasm. Did it all start with Hans Solo is Star Wars? Perhaps. Maybe it helps lighten the horror or some things in the paranormal world?

    Hi Sharon,
I haven’t read this book yet, but I have seen Ravenous all over the place. I am very interested in it, I checked out your website and read the blurb. I am definitely adding this book to my TBR pile.

I think that humor and witty banter plays a big part in paranormal/fantasy books, It makes you feel like even tho the characters aren’t human, they are still like us, they have feelings, hopes and dreams. I love a good LOL book.

I think what makes a hero truly heroic, is when the “hero” risk everything for the greater good, no matter the cost to him/her personally.

    My question for you is.
If you had one day to do anything, be anything or go anywhere, what would you do?

    1. If the vampires in question would be able to live and let live, I wouldn’t mind them being my neighbors. Someone totally out of control? Not so much.

    2. Tough question… Risking your life or limb for others and for good is certainly heroic, but so is basic kindness sometimes.

    3. I do like humor and humorous banter in the books I’m reading (as long as it doesn’t sound forced), but it seems most paranormal is sold more as “dark” and/or “adventurous”. It doesn’t necessarily exclude humor, but doesn’t always promise it, either.

Sharon, Welcome to the BBB site today am so excited about the next Dark Forgotten installment……
#1. Purchased the book from Barnes and Nobles and emailed receipt to BBB gmail.
#2. Here are my answers to Sharon on her 3 questions. I also would like to add a comment that once my book ships from B&N will crack it open and devour it as fast as possible just like with Ravenous, read in one day….

    1. One of the big debates in the book is whether or not vampires, werewolves and other monsters should have equal rights to humans. What do you think? Would you want a vampire living next door?
Monsters having equal rights as humans would be about as likely as my Chihuahua winning the Presidency of the US, do not think it will happen and really not sure it would be a good idea anyway…. Not sure about having a vampire living next door unless happens to be one of the “Mated” ones like in lots of books read nowadays. Seems like these vamps do good once they find their significant other and have a reason to be positive….

    2. What makes a hero truly heroic? How much do they have to risk?
A characteristic for me that makes a hero heroic is true belief in right and wrong and no matter how hard that rule is to follow they stick to it… Being heroic also means being unique in the manner that the hero is someone who does not expect any kind of adulation or praise for their actions, they do what they do because it makes them a better being in their own eyes…. To be a hero you usually have to risk everything including your own life…
    3. One of the things I try and include in my books is a lot of humour. Is verbal banter between characters something we’ve come to expect from paranormal fiction?
I personally love humor in a book, sarcastic humor is my favorite. Tongue-in-cheek witticism is something that have been a fan of since childhood because you have to “think” to get the humor. Verbal banter is not something I personally have come to expect in paranormal fiction but it is nice because it helps make the story line more believable when the characters interact in a verbal back and forth rather than just wham bam thank you maam action scenes and or explicit sex scenes… After all real life is all about talking to get to know someone and how they feel and think about things important to them, even in humor you learn quite a bit….

Hey Sharon! Thanks for coming today.
Do you have a favorite series that you read in your “down time”? If so, what series?

    1. Could a Vampire live next door? As long as they aren’t noisy and don’t bite people that don’t want to be bit. I’m cool with it.
    2. What makes a hero truly heroic? How much do they have to risk? There are many ways to be heroic. A person that gives up there own self in order to honor and protect are the top of the list.
A person can risk all or ones self image.
    3. One of the things I try and include in my books is a lot of humour. Is verbal banter between characters something we’ve come to expect from paranormal fiction?
For me personally, I think it depends on my mood. If I want humor, I will automatically grab (just for instance) a book from Mary Janice Davidson. Or if I want something more heavy, I’d go for Christine Feehan.

    I have RSVP’d

Honestly, it depends on what kind of a vampire and what I’m allowed to do to protect myself. Are there strict laws protecting the vampire from me as well, or am I the only one protected?

To be truly heroic, a hero has to risk everything—mind, body and soul (which Mac does readily!!)

Not only do your characters banter with each other, they do it with themselves. Mac debating with his caveman self was hilarious!

Howdy all! Thanks so much for coming to the SCORCHED launch. I’ll pop in now and answer a few questions, and then be back a bit later and answer the rest, so if I don’t get to yours now, I promise I will when I get home from work. (Yes, the glamorous life of an author–still slinging spreadsheets to pay the bills!) I’ll keep coming back as long as questions appear because I really appreciate the time you’ve taken to ask.

First of all–Lisa M. Root canal???? My sympathies!

OK - Elaine G.: Can I describe my main character in 3 words? Mac is practical, smart, and compassionate. Constance, the heroine, is passionate, a romantic, and devoted to family.

Heather C: How did I get interested in writing UF? Not sure, because I always have been. As a kid, I imagined myself the protagonist of all my favorite books, which of course involved fantasies wherein assorted magical beings participated in my grade two school, recess, doing homework etc. Then I read a “Conan the Barbarian goes to New York” comic book and realized other people had those fantasies, too.

Amanda L: What authors have inspired me? It’s a very long list. I read all the usual fantasy fare as I was growing up (Alan Garner, Tolkien, Lloyd Alexander) and then later a lot of classical literature (Dickens, Tolstoy, Romantic poets) for my degree. Now I’m reading all the UF favorites. I’d say they all have an equal influence on what I write.

Do I believe in the paranormal? Yes, I do. I’ve encountered “haunted” places.

Stefanie F. - I don’t name my characters after real people, unless they’re a historical figure. Legal implications aside, too many of my characters get eaten by monsters.

Joann L: Hardest thing about writing: putting bum in chair and doing it (talking about the brilliant thing I’m going to do is so much easier). Easiest: Thinking up stories. Daydreaming is seriously underrated.

    Deana H:

    1. Will this be a series? Yes, it’s called The Dark Forgotten series. Book 3, Unchained, will be out in July

    2. How did you become involved in your quest to help animals? One of my two cats is a rescue animal, and several of my friends do also. I became involved when I went to several shelters and saw the condition some of these poor creatures were in. Sometimes it takes just a little bit of help to make a big difference, so I started the greeting card project on my web site just to see what the response would be. If I–and everyone who helps–can get a few cats and dogs healthy so that they can be adopted, I’ll consider it a victory.

OK, I’ve used up my lunch break, so I’ll be back in a few hours! TTFN

I haven’t read yout book yet but it’s on my TBR list. I think werewolves, vampires, and other monsters should have rights yes, equal? I don’t know. A hero is someone that does things to help people no matter what the risk is to themselves. I don’t think we expect banter between characters but it’s something we hope for because everyone can use a little humor from time to time. I believe that the central point of Urban Fantasy is the questions of how humans and supernaturals interact. When the Super’s are out in the open I believe the laws should give the Super’s rights, but also regulate how far they can go to use/abuse humans - the humans must have rights also. Yes, I do enjoy the verbal banter in the stories. Without that banter, it would be much darker, and then would be horror.

    I RSVPd and pre-ordered scorched but from B & N, not amazon.

I stumbled across Ravenous in a used book store a few months ago and what a find! I like how you’ve opened the door to so many possibilities, so many threads to follow. As soon as I could I pre-ordered Scorched because I found myself caring about the characters.

Can you tell us a little about your experience in getting the first in the series published? Was it a long rocky road, or did someone snatch it up immediately? I am always interested in such behind the scenes stories b/c there are PLENTY of books I’ve read where I think, “wow, how the heck did THIS get published?” and plenty of books I’ve loved where the authors tell stories of long, arduous paths to get others to recognize the merits of their work.

It kinda makes me wonder about the publishing world and who is making these decisions!

Anyway, I hope that your road was a fairly easy one w/o too many rejections or road blocks. Your book (I can only speak to Ravenous since I haven’t yet received my copy of Scorched) gave fresh new ideas in a genre where things have been done to death (pardon the pun). Congrats to you for being able to do that & make use of all your daydreaming! :-)

I have been waiting for this since I rsvp’d. MY neighbors think I’m the vampire! I sleep all day and work all night. Your book RAVENOUS was a pleasure to read. The characters developed naturaly and had a completeness. I expect that since I never see my neighbors, it would be nice to have someone awake when I am.With child molesters, thieves, amd murderers everywhere, a monster might be an improvement! A hero is anyone who does the right thing no matter how frightened they are or what the consequences. Humor should always fit in any situation. Now the question…
Do you know the ending before you start? If so do you use an outline, if not how do you know when to wrap it up?

    1. I really don’t care who lives next door to me, as long as they don’t bother me. I’ll wave and say hi to my neighbors but I don’t want to be friends with them JUST because they’re my neighbors. (or in the case of the vampire night-bors?)

    Hi! I RSVP’d

Your books are new to me, bit im definitely adding them to my wishlist! Can’t wait!

    1. One of the big debates in the book is whether or not vampires, werewolves and other monsters should have equal rights to humans. What do you think? Would you want a vampire living next door?
Sure - I don’t mind the idea of living next door to a vampire.  Might make life a bit more interesting at times. (especially if he looked like “Eric” on True Boold! ;) ) Of course, hopefully we’d be friends so I wouldn’t be you know, killed. hehe

    2. What makes a hero truly heroic? How much do they have to risk?

Hmmmm…  Good question!! I don’t know. Let’s see. I wouldn’t necessarily say you have to risk your life to be heroic. Anything you do to help someone is heroic to me.

    3. One of the things I try and include in my books is a lot of humour. Is verbal banter between characters something we’ve come to expect from paranormal fiction?

Come to expect it? Hmmm no. But I like it! Humor is something I like in any genre of book - not specifically just paranormal fiction.

    My questions:
If you could go “live” in any book in history - where would you go? What book? Is there anything you would like to change in any paeticular book?

If you could could cast ANY book as a movie - who is your dream cast?

I’ll post a list of links for the contest later - I’m on my cell.

I don’t know if it’s already been answered - the Facebook link doesn’t work. (the one in the interview) is it just me??

    I RSVPed for this event.

    2. In response to your first question, I think that vampires should have the same rights as humans. Especially if a substitute for blood, as in True Blood, could be developed that would allow them to do this. Of course, as any minority would face difficulties, I think vampires would really receive a lot of discrimination. Someone else mentioned neighbors and I’m the same way. I don’t have much to do with my neighbors except to wave hello, etc., so I wouldn’t mind vampire neighbors as long as they left me alone!

I RSVP’d yesterday for today’s release party for Sharon Ashwood, Michelle B. aka koshkalady.

My comment is regarding a vampire/werewolf/shapeshifter/etc. living next door…that would depend on the individual…if they are psycho or likely to harm me or mine then no I don’t want them next door but if they just want to do their thing as I do mine…to each his own.

I’ve decided to answer the questions that Sharon posed for readers:
    1. I would not mind a vampire neighbor if there were places he/she could get voluntary blood or if there was synthetic blood they could use.
    2. What makes a hero heroic is a willingness to do the right thing no matter what and should be willing to risk everything.
    3. Good verbal banter is definitely something that I’ve come to expect from paranormal fiction.

I’m back! And wet–it’s absolutely pouring outside!

Comment #8,Annetta asks: Does Scorched pave the way for a third book? Yup, it’s called UNCHAINED and I finished it yesterday!! The heroine is the stakes-and-motorcycles type, so if you like action scenes, this is up your alley.

Lexie C: Hi! Do I do anything special when I launch a book? This time I’ve visiting BBB! And I usually get a new piece for my desktop miniature graveyard–although they’re getting hard to find. One year I got a Dracula castle that lights up.

#16: Leni asks: Question: Is your love for animals and wanting to help them what lead you to write about the plight of outcasts and monsters? A really good question! They’re related, I guess. I always think a society is only as good as the way it treats its weakest members. Animals, children, the elderly, the poor, and disenfranchised monsters all fall under that umbrella for me. :)

#17 Nora asks: how can we unpublished folk get anyone to give us a read? I can only answer for how it worked in my case. I belong to the Romance Writers of America, which is a treasure trove of support for new writers, whatever genre they write. Their chapters sponsor a lot of contests, and editors and agents are often the final round judges. That’s how I got my manuscript in front of an editor–and that’s the same way a lot of my author friends got noticed.

#20 Bethany C. asks do I get input into my covers? Sure. And then the creative team at my publisher does what they think is the best idea. Whether the two coincide is … well they haven’t yet. I get great, fabulous covers, but they’re never what I expect! My heroines are also questioning the wardrobing choices, although the heroes are just fine with them.

Do I read within my genre? Yes! But I also read outside it. I just finished a mystery last night, and then started one of Jessica Andersen’s Nightkeeper books. I recommend her series.

    I am commenting on #3.
As is real life, humorous banter between characters is what gives them depth. A person’s (or Vampire, Werewolf, zombie etc…) true natire is often revealed in their sense of humor. Without humorous interludes, a story is just one dramatic cliff hanger after another. We wouldn’t want that would we? :>)

Comment 24 by Heidi Shafer - Maybe if there was vampire or werewolf living next to me maybe my family would stay away - Hah! I love that!

My question is how did you come up with your character Mac? Do you know someone that you feel is a hero? Mac was a late addition to Ravenous. I could NOT make the book work the way I envisioned, and then one day he walked into my head and just, well, fixed everything by giving the right balance of personalities. As far as heroes go–they’re everywhere. All people are ordinary and extraordinary at the same time. We just don’t see what they’re made of until the right circumstances come up.

Comment 26: Tawania Etheridge - If you had one day to do anything, be anything or go anywhere, what would you do? At the moment, I’d say sleep, but other than that, I’d probably go somewhere spectacular, like Venice.

Comment 35: Sharla - How do you keep your ideas fresh and original? I think an author will keep coming up with nifty stuff as long as they’re having fun. Plus, I have twisted friends who are always good for off-the-wall suggestions!

37 Ashley Domes - What characters are most like you and why? I would have to say Holly was the most like me in temperament - a woman with modest ambitions trying to make it in a confusing world! Now if I could just have super-hot vampires following me around, life would be good …

41 Deana - How many books will there be total in this series? I don’t know! Three so far, and I’m writing a proposal on a fourth. If you have any special requests, get on the Dark Forgotten loop and make them now!!

43: Valorie B I read Ravenous last week and LOVED IT!!!! THANK YOU!! I was so excited I ordered Scorched this weekend from B&N! AND THANK YOU AGAIN! I was wondering if Holly’s sister will have a larger roll in future books? I also think I have a secret crush on Perry, will he still be a character in the series?? Good news, Valorie! Ashe Carver appears in Scorched and is the main character in Unchained. Perry has a very small role in Scorched but a much bigger one in Unchained. Perry & I are discussing his future right now. He’s neck and neck with Lore to be the hero of book 4. Votes, people??

46 seraphina z. — Can you tell us a little about your experience in getting the first in the series published? Was it a long rocky road, or did someone snatch it up immediately? Ravenous was an odd duck of a book - it started out as a writing project on Kelley Armstrong’s writer’s group bulletin board, which gave us quite a few splendid paranormal writers, including A.J. Menden (read her if you like superhero romance). Then it went and languished in an agent’s office forever, and I don’t think it ever actually got read there. Then two editors wanted it at the same time. Then the editor who got it decided it had to be rewritten from first person into third - I rewrote that book umpty times, but the last version was the right one, because that’s when Mac and the Castle came on board. The scene with the mouse, however, was in the very first draft, as was the computer class sequence. The series just took some time to find its feet.

48 debra hanna — Your book RAVENOUS was a pleasure to read. Thanks so much! Do you know the ending before you start? More or less. The question of “to plot or not to plot” is a big one with authors. I fall in between. I make an outline but there are always question marks. If I make too many decisions beforehand, I get bored. Plus, I let the characters lead me up to a point. Sometimes their personalities change the book. (Constance did that for me in SCORCHED - she was supposed to be quite different!) If I have a plot twist or mystery involved, I have to stop about halfway through and get down to the nitty gritty so I don’t trip myself up. Unchained, the book I just finished, has a lot of mystery in it, and I had to keep running notes so I didn’t miss something.

53: Debra - Would you ever consider using ferrets in your stories? Sure! I don’t know much about them, though, so I’d have to do some research to “get it right.” They’re very cute!

55: Tamara - Sharon, what do you do in between writing besides playing with your graveyard on your desk LOL. Besides work, I like to hang out with friends, watch TV, and get to the gym. I also love to play music and played several instruments with a Celtic group, but don’t have much time to do that anymore. Is there any author that is your favorite and if you have the time what kind of books do you read or movies do you like to see? My favorite movies are fantasy or horror, although I love a good costume drama, too. Favorite authors are hard, because it depends on my mood. Lately, I’ve reread all the Laurell K. Hamilton books for an essay that I contributed to an anthology called ARDEUR. She’s one author I’ll go back to and reread, and I don’t do that with many. She’s definitely a favorite.

57 Melissa Cleaver - Question #1 - What would you say is your favorite book you’ve written and which one would you suggest a newbie like myself to read first? Ravenous and Scorched can stand alone, but if you feel like reading them in order, start with Ravenous.

Question #2 - How long have you been interested in vampires? I think I started to see them as positive characters when I read Interview with a Vampire. That book really fascinated me.

59 Bridget H. — If you could trade places with someone, who would it be and why? I think I’d love to slip into the body of a great dancer or singer and go along for the ride, just to know what all that talent would be like …

60 Wilma - Are new ideas hard to find for your books? Nope, I’ve got too many!!

63 Libby L: If you could go “live” in any book in history - where would you go? What book? Is there anything you would like to change in any particular book? Strange as it may sound, I’d love to take a wander through the Europe of War and Peace, and have Prince Andrei live. Of course, I’d have to be fabulously wealthy, aristocratic and attend all the Czar’s balls.

65 Seri - What is the most paranormal experience you have ever had? I’ve seen and felt a few ghosts, though not for some years now. I think sleep deprivation interferes!

66 Nora - How do you choose a time and locale for a story? A lot depends on the type of atmosphere I’m looking for. I also prefer to choose places I’ve been in order to get the true feel of a location. Of course, some plots dictate the time period. It’s hard to write a marriage of convenience story now, whereas it would be simple in the middle ages when arranged marriages were common.

67 Nancy Gilliland — Where do you see this series going after Mac’s story is told? Book 3 is about Holly’s sister, and I have a devilishly clever idea after that. Whether my editor thinks it’s so very brilliant remains to be seen!!

74 - Sharon Knight - Which was the hardest book for you to write & why?
Definitely Unchained, which I just finished. The reason is because the heroine is a very different kind of person than I am. She’s much more aggressive and I had to work on how she would react to a situation.

Hi! I added your books to my Dear Santa letter. I hope he comes through for me! ;o) Your book covers are gorgeous.

    1. I think that they should have rights like humans. But it would have to be different than us for punishments if they break the law. I would not mind having a vampire as a neighbor as long as they left me and my boys alone. I would make friends that way I’m on their good side!
    2. To me a hero is someone that other people look up to. Someone who is willing to sacrifice their life or comforts for another is a hero. If a little kid wants to dress up as you for Halloween or be you when they grow up, you are a hero. ;o)
    3. I tend to remember books more if the conversations between characters are funny. I do see a pattern in UF with the characters being funny or being a smart ass. I think it is a nice break from the hard core fighting that is usually going on.

75 by Michelle S. — do you make soundtracks for your books or whenever you’re writing a book, match a piece of music to a scene to inspire you? also, do you snack while you write, and if so, what snacks do you like to eat most while writing?

I don’t listen to music while I write, although I listen to music around when I write, often while I’m out for a walk. I tend to get stuck on a group or album when I’m doing a book. Scorched was my Smashing Pumpkins greatest hits phase. For some reason, that CD did the trick. As for food - I try and stay away from that because when I’m deep in concentration I can munch through just about any amount of junk without really noticing!

76 Diane Sadler — Do you ever have writer’s block and how do you get out of it? Apply backside to chair and fingers to keys!

78 Corwynn Darkholme — Wiil Holly & Alessandro play major parts in Scorched along with Mac!? Hey, Corwynn! Yes, H&A are back. They aren’t the main characters, but they play a substantial role. I can’t give too much away without spoilers, but Holly has a lot on her plate!

My ideas for creatures come from all over the place. I do use a lot of myth and folk lore in the books (stay tuned for the fey in book 3) but some come straight from my own warped brain.

84 Elie N — I was wondering if you could describe your heroine, Constance in 5 words, which would you use? I mentioned above that Constance is passionate, a romantic, and devoted to family. She’s also a little innocent. She has a strong sense of morality in the best way. Her big story question is how much is she prepared to lose to save someone she loves.

88 Comment by Kristen H. — When did you start writing? I think I was seven! I didn’t start writing seriously until much later. The first paid gig I had was writing music reviews for a local newspaper.

Thanks for being here! I like the cover. Sounds similar to Rachel Morgan’s troubles with demon smut in Kim Harrison’s Hollows series.
    1) Vampires and werewolves were human once, but does that mean zombies should get equal rights, too? Do you have to be ‘alive’ to be a citizen with rights? Some vampires etc. Aren’t any worse than humans, so equal rights. True Blood deals with that argument, too. If the vampires weren’t having criminals over, were behaving by not eating unwilling humans and stayed away from my kitties, I’d be okay with them as neighbors. Can’t be much worse than the human ones. :) My neighbors didn’t usually mind my vampire hours.
    2) Sacrificing to save someone else or being willing to do that, usually. Being willing to give up their life, whatever that means to them.
    3) I don’t know if I’ve read enough paranormal fiction to expect verbal banter in it, but I guess that’s one thing I really love about it. :) Like Spike and Angel. I love humor, and this genre lends itself to even more possibilities.

92 & 94 - Ruby and van P. The last book I read was Ghouls just Haunt to Have Fun (mystery by Victoria Laurie) and my must buy list includes the Morganville vampires by Rachel Caine. I read lots of Kim Harrison, Kelley Armstrong, JR Ward, and Simon R Green.

102 - Debra G - why did you decide to make Constance a not tasted blood vampire, instead of a “regular” vampire? Mainly for plot purposes, but also because she’s missed out on so much of her life. She was very young when she was turned. It’s kind of like, well, she didn’t even get to bite someone and have a bit of fun before she was locked up. It gives her a bit of temptation when a warm-blooded guy comes her way …

104 - Donna S. What drew you to vampires to use in your books?
Where have you always wanted to visit but not had the chance? Hi, Donna! I just plain old love vampires, and when Alessandro wandered into my imagination, he was such a treat I couldn’t NOT use him in something. Where do I want to visit? I haven’t travelled a lot, so it’s a long list! Any of the major European cities would do nicely. I’ve never been to New York or Montreal, and I’d really like to visit both. A number of people I know have been to Australia recently, and made it sound facinating as well! So, lots to look forward to. I am going to try and make it to a few US locations this summer, including a Powell’s event in Portland and the RWA conference and book signing in Nashville. I’ll post details on my web site when they’re firmed up.

105: Sue A. — Which of your books has the darkest hero? Of the ones available now, probably Alessandro? Mac has a rough ride, but he’s pretty level headed about the whole thing.

110 deb — MY QUESTION IS WHERE DO YOU COME UP WITH THE IDEAS FROM? Stuff just comes. I write it down. I plan my books on big pieces of newsprint tacked to the wall, and I make notes as I walk by. Eventually, it kind of clicks and, hey, I have a plot.

    Woohoo! I’ve caught up!

Sharon–that’s so cool (about the desktop graveyard). the only thing on my desk top right now is a chess board (with pieces from Clamp no Kiseki XD) and my mahjong tiles. I get bored sometimes and like to play Chess-jong, where I set up all the tiles underneath the chess pieces and for each chess piece I move I can only uncover those mahjong pieces…I never did know how to play regular games very well…

    1. It would be OK, as long as it wouldn’t stalk me and mine after the dark:) If seriously, I wouldn’t be comfortable, as I wouldn’t feel safe, so I’d probably would avoid meeting it.

    2. A true hero can risk everything, even his own life. But the greatest sacrifice would probably be give up someone that you love, if that would be better for them.

    3. I always love humour and banter between characters in books, also in TV and movies. It’s what has the greatest appeal to me, because I read/watch to be entertained. So, the more the better!

A couple of questions for Sharon:

If you could go back in time, what year/era would you go to and why?
Aslo, what person (living or dead) would you like to meet the most, if you had the chance?
    Thanks!

    1. One of the big debates in the book is whether or not vampires, werewolves and other monsters should have equal rights to humans. What do you think? Would you want a vampire living next door?

If is was a sexy guy who drank bagged blood only sure why not lol but if he bit humans I as a single mom would have to say no thanks

    2. What makes a hero truly heroic? How much do they have to risk?

Anyone who is willing to and does risk their life for someone they love or even more so if they do it for someone they don’t know is heroic to me.

    3. One of the things I try and include in my books is a lot of humor. Is verbal banter between characters something we’ve come to expect from paranormal fiction?

humor isn’t really all that important to me sometimes I am in the mood for humor others more to the dramatic side

    1. We all live on this Earth. Everyone should have the right to live in peace, regardless of race, species, gender, etc. And no, I wouldn’t mind a vampire living next door.:o)
    2. To a kid, a dad could be a hero, someone to look up to. I don’t think you have to save lives or do heroic actions to be a hero.
    3. Love the humour in books. Definitely a plus for me to buy a book.

Just one quick question - do you have any intention to write in other genres - historicals, etc.?

    Thanks and happy holidays!

    1. HMMMM well as long as the vamps, wolves and monsters didn’t run a muck them I wouldn’t mind. I probably wouldn’t stay out late though. lol!
    2. I think being a hero is when you put someone else before yourself.
3.I would say yes. I love the verbal banter that goes on between characters. It keeps the story balanced.

Good morning all! I’ll answer these two as they’re quick and come back for the longer answers:

121 Tonya Williams — I ordered Ravenous so I could start from the beginning!

Great! Thank you! I hope you enjoy it!

Also - How do you prepare to write a book? Start with an idea - start with a character - start with a backdrop? Do you know the ending before you begin or does it just come to you as you write?

I start with the characters, and sometimes just an atmosphere or mood. I work out from there - try and figure out what the characters needs, what their aims are, and then match them up with friends, lovers, enemies, and stir!

124 - Tamsyn - would I write in other genres?

Yes, if I had a story in another genre or time period, I’d be happy to give it a try. It’s not always easy to get published in another genre, though. For instance, the market for historical romance has been tough to break into for the last few years.

Hi Sharon. Thanks so much for joining us here. I have heard great things about your series and look forward to reading it.

You asked about humor in paranormal fiction. I do like it, as long as the humor fits the story, because it does help to lighten the atmosphere a bit. I don’t really expect it in UF/PR, but do believe it is becoming a bit more common.

Beverly G — do you ever cast your self in your books? No, not really. I prefer to write about more interesting people!

Stephmartin71 — How many books do you think will there be in this series? That always depends on how well they do, and if I think they’re continuing to be fresh.

Carol M. — do you ever attend fan conventions? I’ve been in school as well as working up until this summer, so I haven’t done much travelling. I’m starting to think about it now.

Lisa D. — Would you like to have your books become real life? Some parts of them yes, some no. I’m not sure I’d want to meet a changeling!
