Release Party, Chat and Contest with Author Marianne Mancusi

Posted under Chat, Contests, Guest Bloggers, Videos by Site Hostess on Wednesday 11 November 2009 at 12:32 pm

Thanks everyone for joining me at my virtual release party for the Blood Coven Vampires series. Originally published back in 2006, the first three books in the series – Boys that BiteStake That, Girls That Growl – have been revamped with hot new covers and a fourth book in the series, Bad Blood, which will be out in January 2010.

The series follows two twins – Sunshine and Rayne – who, while identical on the outside, couldn’t be more different on the inside. While Sunny’s your typical, everyday high school girl who loves field hockey, drama, and cute boys, Rayne’s a goth girl who wants nothing more than to become a creature of the night forever.

Rayne’s networked, been on waiting lists—she even took a three month certification course to become a vampire. But when the night comes when she’s scheduled to be bitten and transformed…her vampire sponsor accidentally bites her twin instead.

Now Sunny – who never even knew even vampires existed before now – has a week to figure out a way to reverse the transformation. Or she’ll become a vampire forever.

While technically a YA, I wrote the series to appeal to both teens and adults alike and filled it with humor, romance and a whole lot of vampy angst. People have compared it to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which is definitely a compliment to me – as that’s one of my favorite series ever!

Thanks for stopping by! I hope you’ll enter the Bitten by Books contest and check out the Blood Coven Vampires!

I have a few questions for you to get the party started:

1) If you had the opportunity to sign up to become a vampire — gaining everlasting life, riches beyond compare, and a sexy soul mate to spend eternity with - would you do it? Even if it meant drinking blood from donors instead of eating again and never going out in the sun? Why or why not?

2) Every vampire novel has its own “rules” about what vampires can or cannot do. If you created your own vampire world, what would your rules be?

3) Obviously there are a lot of vampire books out there. What keeps you reading them? (Or are you sick to death of them and wish the trend would be quickly “staked”?)

Hey Marianne! Thanks for spending your time with us.
My question is: How do you set the “limit” of how far you can go writing YA before it would be considered Adult. Is it harder to write YA vs. Adult?

    Thanks,

This is my first time being introduced to this series. The covers are gorgeous, very eye catching. I’m surprised I haven’t seen them already.

    1. I wouldn’t make a good vampire. The site of blood freaks me out. I love the sun to much! I’m not that interested in immortality.
    2. My vamps would be able to go in the sun, drink animal blood, have a reflection, and not turn ugly scary when they get mad. But they still would only have access to someone’s house with permission. Of course they would have super strength.
    3. Most of the series that I read are completely different. The vamps/world are original and so different that it keeps me interested. If they were all the same type of vamps, I’d get bored.
    Fun questions!

    I RSVP’d.

Hi Marianne. Thanks for joining us here. This is Carol, your D*C moderator.

In answer to your first question, no, I would not become a vampire. To make what could be a long answer short, I will say that I don’t think I would be able to watch people I care about die, especially for eternity.

I will answer other questions later. :)

    Hi Fallon!

To answer your questions, I’d say “how far do you go” is a decision every YA author should make for themselves. I tend to write pretty clean YA. In the Blood Coven, one of the twins (Rayne)has had sex and the other one (Sunny) is a virgin. As the books progress Sunny keeps trying to decide whether or not to do it as she’s getting more and more serious with her boyfriend, so there are discussions about that. But I think even if she ever does decide to, I’d keep the door closed, so to speak. So I guess that’s where I’d draw the line.

I’d say the big difference between adult and YA is not the content - as you can really get away with a lot these days - but the sensibility and situations. Can teens relate to the main characters - their lives, their conflicts, their challenges? That’s the key. You could have an extremely sexy YA that teens would totally get into, or a totally clean one that they would feel is too “adult” because they can’t relate to the main character and what they’re going through. When writing for teens, romance is important, but so is school, parents, friends, teachers, etc. etc.

As for what’s easier? For some reason, I find it easier to get into the heads of teens than adults. Even my adult romances have been said to have a “young voice”. Not sure why that is…maybe I’ve never grown up? :) I also find writing for teens very rewarding because they get so immersed in the series and want to participate. They draw, they write fan fic, they do videos - and it all really expands and solidifies the world I’ve created, which I think is pretty cool.

Thanks for your entry and questions!!! :) MARI

I got so excited to ask my question I forgot to answer yours.

    1. I couldn’t do the vampire thing. I LOVE food. I can do without the sun but I HAVE to have food. I’m a food junkie.

    2. Rules: Only kill the bad guys. The ones that pray on elderly, children, and whomever else they could harm.

    3. I am a “recovering” book snob. For some strange reason, I got the idea that because I want to write romantic suspense, that should be the only thing I read.
It wasn’t until I began to study the craft of writing, that I discovered just how much I missed.
I have been turned on to so many authors that I never had read before. As far as the vampires go, I can’t get enough of them at the moment. I think the draw is the everlasting life. Beauty, riches, and all the mind boggling sex that the novels create.

    Thanks again for coming,
    Fallon H.

    2. I am really loving the new covers! I would definitely be a vampire even though it means drinking blood and no more sunlight for me. I think that is a small price to pay for eternal life and all the powers I would gain. The hardest part of it would be watching the people I love grow old and die. Would you become a vampire if you could?

Hi Marianne! Thanks for being here with us today!
I don’t know if I would become a vampire or not. It depends on the day whether or not I think I would say yes. Like Carol said, it would be hard to watch everyone you know die, but if you got to have someone w/ you for eternity it would make it easier. I read so many different series, all the rules seem to be different. It keeps it interesting.

Hi Marianne! Thanks for being here! This series sounds very interesting:o) I haven’t read anything from you yet but that will change after today:o) lol! Thanks BBB!

To kinda answer your first question maybe I could become a vampire. From a scientific stand point I could live long enough to develope cures for different diseases. With immortality I could learn many different things and reinvent my life as many time as I wanted:o) The down side is that the people I love would die eventually and I would still be alive:o( So I guess yes and no is the answer:o)

My question to you is what inspires you to write? Oh and would you become a vampire if given the chance?

    Thanks!

Steph M - I think it’s the readers who inspire me to write - or at least keep writing. Teens are so excited about the books and love to tell me how the characters are “just like them”. They’re also very demanding - “I finished this book in a day - when’s the next one?” haha.

As for whether I’d be a vampire… It’s a tough one. I think so, though, because I feel like the world is so wide - I’d love to spend a hundred lifetimes experiencing it all. The whole no-sunshine thing would suck (no pun intended) and I can’t imagine giving up cupcakes…

Valorie B - I really am loving Rachel Caine’s Morganville Vampire series and Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy. I love the kick-butt heroines who don’t need to wait around for a sexy male vampire to save them!!

    Hi, Mari!

To answer your question - I would totally say yes to being a vampire! What more could I ask for? Eternal life? Check! Money? Yup! A soul mate? Hell yes!

So yeah - where do I sign up? ;)

  16. Comment by Jackie Burris — November 11, 2009 @ 2:08 pm

Welcome to BBB Marianne, you are a new author for me and the book covers look fantastic am putting these on my wish list of to be bought books for future shopping sure would be cool to get that $100 gift card….

    1) If you had the opportunity to sign up to become a vampire — gaining everlasting life, riches beyond compare, and a sexy soul mate to spend eternity with - would you do it? Even if it meant drinking blood from donors instead of eating again and never going out in the sun? Why or why not?
My answer would be a resounding Where Do I Sign Up and How Fast Can We Do This because of course would love to be a vampire even though hate sight and smell of blood. The technology has changed on being able to go out in the sun, may could wait for really cloudy rainy or foggy day and wear lots of sunblock, who am I kidding I love the night now no sacrifice there. Why I would love to change to be a vamp is easy no more headaches, no more worrying about what meals to fix or where to go out to eat and could spend the rest of my nights with someone that was a sexy soulmate, what is not to love there.
    2) Every vampire novel has its own “rules” about what vampires can or cannot do. If you created your own vampire world, what would your rules be?
My one steadfast rule would be the one that a White Witch adheres to first and foremost Do No Harm. I think that if one is given an awesome chance to be stronger, faster, able to live forever spend the time doing as much for the good of others as possible because after all eternity is kind of boring if all you do is spend it on selfish pursuits and acquiring things gets old after awhile….

    3) Obviously there are a lot of vampire books out there. What keeps you reading them? (Or are you sick to death of them and wish the trend would be quickly “staked”?)
I have been a “Rabid” fan of the vampire since was very young in middle school in the 70’s and what keeps me reading the genre is simple Entertainment. I love fantasy and escaping into a world populated by a being that does not exist has always been my favorite form of reading, it does not require heavy thinking and it usually involves very tormented characters who even when the bad guys have something that draws you in and keeps you coming back for more. Also love when a writer commits to a series of at least 3 or 4 books so can get a longer “Fix” with recurring characters who grow and mature from book to book, for me it is a “Soap Opera” in print and bette because can let my imagination run wild….

    1) Sure I would become a vampire. I then might have the years that I need to read all the books in my TBR.

    2) Rules - I’d want my vampires to be ethical beings bound by a code of vampire behaviour (whatever that means).

    3) I’ve been reading vampire stories for 40 years. I see no reason to stop now. :)

I will have to pick up The Blood Coven series. It sounds terrific.

And now a question for Marianne: What drew you to write about vampires?

I’ve a) retweeted, follow BBB on b) Facebook and c) Twitter, d) joined Marianne Mancusi’s FB fan page (I don’t believe that FB send an email about that), e) already a member of the Blood Bank, f) voted in the Poll for the week, and g) entered the Kindle 2 contest.

Hi I tend to stay away from YA books when I read it is to get lost in the adult world I spend too much time in the kid world thanks to my daughter lol.

    1) If you had the opportunity to sign up to become a vampire — gaining everlasting life, riches beyond compare, and a sexy soul mate to spend eternity with - would you do it? Even if it meant drinking blood from donors instead of eating again and never going out in the sun? Why or why not? Yes as long as when my daughter was old enough I could turn her. I am not a big fan of the sun anyway I am a night owl personally and only am up during the day because of my daughter.

    2) Every vampire novel has its own “rules” about what vampires can or cannot do. If you created your own vampire world, what would your rules be? I like the rules Lynsay Sands has in her vampire series where they have to use bagged blood rather than “off the hoof” except in emergencies and how they can go out in daylight when needed but it is uncomfortable for them and they need more blood when they do and how they can only turn one person in their lifetime (although I would prefer to be able to turn 2 rather than just one) and only have 1 kid every hundred years.

    3) Obviously there are a lot of vampire books out there. What keeps you reading them? (Or are you sick to death of them and wish the trend would be quickly “staked”?)
I love vampire books and my favorite authors that write vampire books are all so different that I could never get bored.

    Hi Ms. Mancusi,

I have not read your book yet but they sound really great and will definitely check them out.

Regarding your question, would i become a vampire? Probably not, I don’t think i could live in a world where my family and friends grow old and leave…it would be really lonesome without the people I love.

My question for you is: Why did you choose vampires for your book, why not some other paranormal being? And what other authors are a ‘must read’ for you?

I guess it’s the fact that sure, there’s lots of vampire books but they’re not all similar, there’s different rules, etc and that makes it fun! If every vampire world was similar, I would have stopped reading these books a loooong time ago!

By the way, I haven’t read your Blood Coven books yet but I can’t wait! They sound so good. I did read Gamer Girl and LOVED IT! :D

Hi Marianne!!! Thanks for stopping by!!! I do love me some Buffy, so you’ve peaked my interest.

As for your questions, the first one is tough. I do love the sun, but the forever young, rich, and with a sexy mate is hard to turn down. Plus, I don’t think there are too many calories in blood. :) I think I would go for it.

2 - Well, the rules changes would definitely be that you could still eat food as well as drink blood. Life without chocolate would be rough, and now that I’ve said that, I might need to change my answer to question 1. It would be really hard to quit food. I think I’d like to be able to fly as well, no turning into a bat, but just flying.

3 - I am completely hooked on vamps. I think the reason I am not tired of it all is that each author has their own spin on things. As mentioned in the rules, everyone creates their own, and that keeps life interesting.

Question for you, what drew you to want to write about vampires?

    Yes… sign me up
My vamp world is super sekret… LOL not giving out details yet…
I love the genre…. can’t get enough of them… maybe because I want to escape the realities of my everyday life so bad I douse myself with hunky paranorms that devote their time, love, affection and money towards the one they desire above anyone else…

    1) If you had the opportunity to sign up to become a vampire — gaining everlasting life, riches beyond compare, and a sexy soul mate to spend eternity with - would you do it? Even if it meant drinking blood from donors instead of eating again and never going out in the sun? Why or why not?

I think it would depend on the soul mate. Soul mate has come to mean the person who is perfect for you forever, but I have also read that a soul mate is not destined to be yours forever, but only for a short time to put you on the path your life is supposed to take at that time. I truly don’t know which it is. As for being bitten and turned? No. I’ve always had a fascination with both Were’s and Vamp, but if I really were going to choose one? It’d be the were. I love the sun too much to have to give it up.

    2) Every vampire novel has its own “rules” about what vampires can or cannot do. If you created your own vampire world, what would your rules be?

I have them in mind, but since I might actually use them someday, I’m not going to post them. However, I will say one thing (no offence to SM or the TW series, which I very much enjoyed and am going to see the new one next week) my vamps, should I ever get them down on paper–will not sparkle.

    3) Obviously there are a lot of vampire books out there. What keeps you reading them? (Or are you sick to death of them and wish the trend would be quickly “staked”?)

I will never quit reading paras, vamps or weres as long as I keep finding ones that I like or as long as my favorite authors still publish. With the explosion of Para romances over the past couple of years, I finally have a thousand worlds to explore that I’d actually want to live in.

Van P & Heather C: I always had sort of a love affair with vampires. From the vivid Anne Rice Vampire books to the campy fun of Lost Boys, The Hunger, and, of course, Buffy. Also, I was a goth girl in high school so a love of vampires was pretty much required. :)

Must read authors: Marion Zimmer Bradley, Margaret Atwood, Laurel K Hamilton’s older stuff, Rachel Caine, Richelle Mead, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Mary Janice Davidson…the list goes on!

Brittany: I won’t know til January if Book #5, Night School, will be released in the US. It will depend on how well these re-releases sell, I suppose. And how Bad Blood does. Hopefully the series will continue! I’m writing Book #5 for Germany right now and I’m loving going back to the characters. (For those of you who don’t know, Germany is actually ahead in publishing the books.)

Jessica: I love the idea of two girls who are identical on the outside, but vastly different on the inside. And there are so many opportunities for mistaken identity!

As for how many books - it really just depends on the series demand. I have lots of stories to tell if readers are interested in reading them!

Shel B - I’ve written 13 books in total, for both adults and teens, in many genres. I’ve done time travel romance, futuristic/cyberpunk romance, a post apocalyptic book called Razor Girl, and a contemporary YA called GAMER GIRL. (Kind of “you’ve got mail with videogames”) In January I have a zombie anthology story out called “My Zombie Valentine.” So I like to play the genre field, so to speak! But this series remains my favorite!

I was glad of the chance to go back and update the old versions. It’s amazing how much pop culture changes in just a few years. It was fun to go back and read the old books, too.

    :)

    1. I wouldn’t want to be a vampire. My reasons are very selfish. I have lost too many that I love already. I don’t think I have the mental strength to lose everybody and still continue living. Therefore:
    2. One of my rules would be that if you could chose to be a vampire, you should also be able to chose to no longer be a vampire and die
    3. The vampire world keeps changing and that’s why I keep reading!

Hi Marianne! Thanks for stopping by! Just wanted to let you know how much I liked Moongazer, and I have Razor Girl on my TBR as well! Now on to your questions:

    1. I’m pretty sure I’d be tempted to be a vampire, but I don’t think I ultimately would. I think if you dangled the possibility in front of me I’d think about looking the same way for the rest of my life, so I’d try to get myself into the best shape possible. But maybe I’d be unsuccessful and either give up, or have some sort of weird vampirism induced anorexia, or something (which might make an interesting character in a story, come to think of it).

    2. I think it is important that vampires have some kind of weakness because they prey on humans, and even if you’re writing about vampires that are not killers, the mere fact that they have so many advantages over humans would create problems. However, I don’t like the cross thing. I think either vampires have to repelled by any religious symbol (and then I worry about the atheists) or none of them. Garlic, as smelly as it is, is a far more democratic repellent; not too pricey and anyone can carry it around.

    3. I still enjoy vampire novels, but I think that in many of them the vampires have lost their “bite” (ha ha). It might be time to go back to vampires as villains, or at least to do a better job of portraying vampire psychology. I don’t think most vampires would be as accepting of the modern world as they are portrayed as being in books. It would be cool to read about a girl who fell in love with a hot vampire, only to find out he was a sexist jerk due to coming of age in 16th century or whatever.

    Hi Marianne,
I have not read this series but it looks interesting, love the vampires.
My question is. Do you have a favorite Author or Series that you follow?

1)I would definatly sign up to become an Vampire not so much for the riches, although they could be used to help people. As for the drinking blood not sure, I do not like red meat and when i do eat it it has to be well done, so an I.V. could help with that part. The sun would not bother me as much. I like it, but love to go out at night and walk and sit by myself more. It is just so peaceful!
    2) The Vampires would be the good guys, Protect the innocent. and run the White House (sorry it can not get any worse). They would be able to go out in the sun for a bit, but not long. And thier would be a waiting list if you wanted to be turned. (Must not have any Rogues!)Drink Bagged blood unless a bond was formed and preson willing.
3)I love my Vampire books. I think its the Author that Keeps me reading them. In order for me to read something i need to feel the Chracters in the book be able to visualize them. As if they were real. It takes the first chapter for me to know if i can read the book or not. I have 8 vamipre series that i follow. and many others i just can not read.
    Thanks, Ida

    Welcome Marianne to BittenbyBooks!

    Marianne’s questions:
    1) Being a virtual night-owl, there would be no hang-ups for being giving up the day. Most of my productive work is done during the night. The entire blood thing may throw me off, but I figure once I gain the hang of it, I’d move past it. It would be neat living longer and just seeing how things change.

    2) That is what I like most about now-a-day’s vampire romances, each author differs in the “rules” to their vampires. Some take away Hollywood cliche for vampires. Never really sat down and think what rules I would want to put to my vamps. Perhaps change that in most they are thought to be sterile.

    3) Kinda answered this with number two… What keeps me reading is the different directions authors are taking with their vampires, breaking away from the “mold” so to speak, changing ALL that we think and know about vampire myths. Then there is the creation process. Now when authors follow the same ol mold those tend to get tiresome and boring to me.

Huh, I have the anthology “These Books are Meant for Stomping” I may have to drag it out of storage to read it.

It might be fun to play a vampire for a while, but I suspect eternal life isn’t really all that it’s cracked up to be, especially if you’re the only one of your family/friends living it. So, probably wouldn’t go for it. Although it would be so handy to have all the time you need to do all the things you want to do. I might have to re-think this. lol

Maybe about 10 years ago, I would have been up for the whole immortal thing. Now, there are some things I wouldn’t change for ANYTHING in the world.

I read an author whose vampires were healed when they were turned. Any scars, excess body weight, tattoos, even breast implants were ejected. This would be like getting back years on your body. Think of all the sun damage, environmental pollution that damaged you, all the evidence of age just vanishing.

These books sound great. I checked out the website and immediately recognized the cover from somewhere around the blogosphere. I will be watching for these in January.

    Hi Marianne,

I’ve not read your series yet but it looks like something I would totally dig. I’m looking for a fun, humorous read in my life right now! I just ordered a sample for my Kindle, looking forward to reading it!

    As for the (fun!) questions;

    1) If I was younger and single, I’d definitely consider it. I’d want to because I would like to live through history, experience lifetimes in different cultures, be young and “healthy” forever. As for watching the people you love pass, well I’ve already lost a few people in my life and I think that no matter what, you never stop loving them or missing them, but that doesn’t bring them back. If I had to do it now, I’d say no. I have a family to look after and I don’t think being a vampire would be feasible ;)

    2) Rules? Hmmm, my favorite vampire world is from Lynsay Sands - Argeneau Series. I like that you can turn someone at even an advanced age and their bodies actually heal and reverse the aging. It’s probably the most “realistic” take on vampires that I’ve ever read.

    3) I don’t only read vampire books, I read all different genres but my favs are in the paranormal genre. If someone told me a year ago that I would be “into” vampires, I would have said they were crazy. Well, two things happened within the space of a few days, one is that I happened upon the first episode of True Blood and two I read Stephanie Meyer’s “The Host”. I immediately went out and bought Twilight and the Sookie Stackhouse Series. After reading about Eric Northman, I was hooked like a junkie!

    Thanks!!
    Kim

    Hi Marianne
Can’t wait to read your book.
So my answer to the first question is, Yes I would totally turn into a vampire if I could. There life is just so fascinating.
I guess my only rule for the vampire’s in my world would be to just keep the life a secret.
As for too many books, no I’m not bored with vamp books. I’ve been luv with vampire stories since I can remember. My siblings would try to scare me with “Dracula’s in the closet” and I just couldn’t wait for him to came for me. I would leave my closet doors open just for him. Hehehe
Maybe I am a little twisted. Whoops oh well. :)
Anywho cant wait to get your book.

I’d have to be a werecat. No vamp for me– I like food too much. If I could eat then heck yes, I’d be a vamp. I don’t like certain vamp myths like garlic or turning into a bat. I do like the staking, the holy water and cross thing is good, and my fav, luring with the eyes and bending wills.

So glad you are a fan of Buffy- so am I. I’ve been watching the DVD’s this week. Who was your favorite character?

    Hey Marianne,
I would become a vampire. I sunburn easily so I don’t worship the sun. Although we always want what we don’t or can’t have, don’t we.
My vampires could go out in the sun but, not sparkle or the heat of the day. I love vampire books and really only read them and nothing else.

I enjoy YA vampire books with a hint of romance. Do your characters have some love interests?

    thanks

    Hey Mari,

I love the Blood Coven series and I was kind of hoping that the prize you were giving away would be an ARC of Bad Blood. (>: My question was going to be whether you had plans for more books in the series and I am delighted there is a book #4. So are there plans for more? I am a big fan!

    Hello!
Well, I would like to become a vampire. I would not miss the sun I love the rain and the murky times. As for never eating chocolate *sniff* well the blood and little something else would satisfy that wouldn’t it?
As for The Rules? Hmm…no biting the innocents and keeping ourselves a secret…more fun that way.
I will probably keep reading them forever. Now what appeals, hmm maybe how most of them are wise beyond their years..well not really. I just like reading them for how tricky they are and how powerful, its fun to read heroines struggle.
Do you have favorite supernatural romance/urban fantasy authors? Who are they, and what are you reading right now?

    Great contest! I love it.

    1. I wouldn’t become a vampire. Just the thought of eternity is terrifying. Living through the pain of losing everyone you know, living forever and ever and ever, and the tediousness of it all. I love vampires, and having all the time in the world to learn whatever I want and do whatever I want would be great, I just couldn’t give it all up for eternity.

    2. My vampires could go out in the sun, it would just be a bother and very bright and irritating. Not dead or undead, still living, just they can’t die (except for burning or staking). Beautiful, of course. Enhanced human abilities, no super powers or shape shifting. Need human blood, they can’t live off of animal blood (I just love animals too much! Not that I don’t love people too!) They need certain traits and aspects from the human blood they can’t get from the animals. Not allergic to holy items or garlic.

    3. All the different worlds created and rules enforced intrigue me. I’m not a huge fan of the stereotypical vampire-bats and mist and widows-peaks etc.-but I love to see different takes on vampires. I love it.

    My question for Mari:
Do you prefer the newer vampires-sparkling, drinking animal blood, etc-or the classic ones?

Kimberly B - So glad you liked Moongazer. That was one of my favorite books to write. I loved imagining the futuristic underground world.

Lisa G - Yes, I write adult romances for Dorchester. My last one was a post-apocalyptic romance called Razor Girl where the hero and heroine and a bunch of children - some of the last survivors on Earth - were on the run from zombies. I’ve also done contemporary and time-travel adult romances. (If you look at the little slideshow of books up the top you can check them out!

Alicia H - Good question, re: secondary characters. In the Blood Coven series, I’d have to say Jayden, an emo actor that Sunny meets in the upcoming Bad Blood. Don’t want to say too much about him - and give the book away, but I really kind of fell for him when writing. He’s perhaps my “Jacob” though he’s not a werewolf!

Elaine G — I really love the new covers! They’re more generic than the first ones, which really depicted what was going on in each book, but they’re also very beautiful and they all match really well as a set. I think Stake That and Bad Blood are my favorites. I’m glad we’re no longer cutting off girls’ heads in YA fiction covers, haha.

Heidi S - I actually started in adult romance and then my agent/editor told me I had a “young voice” and should try my hand at YA. I did and found I really loved the genre. It’s so much fun interacting with my readers. They get so wrapped up in the world and the stories.

My characters came to me on a plane ride home from the 2004 RWA. I always loved the Sweet Valley High books which had two twins that were identical on the outside, but so different on the inside. I thought it would be fun to play with the potential of mistaken identity.

Erica - As for inspiration, I think Buffy the Vampire Slayer was much to blame. haha. I loved the show so much and really liked how they mixed humor and paranormal elements together. I was already writing comedy time travel - so paranormal seemed like the right next step. Back in 2004, believe it or not, there weren’t many YA vampire books out there!

Sandy G - If I wasn’t writing about vampires, I’d probably be writing time travel. In fact, I just finished a time travel YA called The Camelot Code, which will be out in 2011, I believe. I like those kinds of “fish out of water” type stories.

Ida and Aori - As for author/series, I really am digging Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy and RacheL Caine’s Morganville vampires. I also recently read Rampant, by Diana Peterfreund, a YA about killer unicorns and the virgins who slay them! And Scott Westerfeld is always a must-by. As you can see, I read a lot of YA…market research! Right now I’m reading a super funny arc by an author named Stacy Kade. Called Ghost and the Goth. Sooo good! I think it’s out next summer.

Moonsanity - A fellow Buffy fan -yay! My favorite character was Spike, but if that’s too obvious, then I’d say Drusilla. I also loved Darla in Angel. There’s just not enough good female vampire roles out there!!

Deana - Yes, the Blood Coven books are first and foremost YA romances. :) Sunny’s love interest becomes Magnus, the vampire who accidentally bit her and Rayne falls for a vampire general named Jareth in book #2, Stake That. Tey all have HEAs - if not a bit of a next-book cliffhanger!

Lori C - They haven’t sent me any arcs! But go to my website and sign up to “Join the Blood Coven”. I’m soon going to be sending out a special extended Bad Blood preview to members! (www.bloodcovenvampires.com)

Linz - Please God, no sparkles!! :) Seriously though, I like my vampires to be a little dangerous. But I do think if they were to live in this day and age amongst humans, they’d have to figure out something about the blood supply. It’s just not practical to go around sucking people dry. In my books they hire (and pay) Blood Donors to service them.

Toni - My first book was published in 2005. It really varies how long it takes to write them. Sometimes 4 months - sometimes a year. Some are just more complex than others!

Whew - think that’s it for now! You guys have good questions!!
    MARI

Hi! Sorry this is a little late! I’m on my ce so I’ll have to post my links later.

I am intrigued by your books and definitely plan to add them to my TBR list. Thanks for stopping by today!! :) I hope my question isn’t too late.

What is your *favorite* spot or place on the planet? Is there a place you consider ”your” spot? Mine is a local bookstore or on my back porch in the spring/fall. (It’s too hot to read out there in July!)

If you could jump in a time machine & go ANYWHERE in time - what would you do? Where would you go? I like asking people that question. :)

I look forward to reading your books! I’m a sucker for all vampire-books. I hope they never go away! I love getting engrossed in a great uban fantasy (or any book for that matter!  )

I would definitely go with bei h a vampire! I am extremely pale & burn easily (red-headed curse!) So I already have to be wary of the sun. I cam get a sunburn within minutes! I would use all that time to collect all the books I want to read & I’d spend my time reading all the books I want. I could already use more than 24-hours in a day! Nerdy perhaps - but true!
    …I’m rambling! :D

    Hi Marianne,
Thanks for hanging out with us today! I can’t wait to check out your series, it looks really good!
    Questions:
I would definately become a vampire, I don’t care much for the sun anyways and I’m pretty sure I could give up food for a sexy soul mate and everlasting life.
My vampire rules would be to protect innocent people and to keep the vampire’s existence a secret.
I like vampire books as long as the author changes things up a bit. If it was the same thing over and over, I would probably get bored.

Ok, and as for your questions Rachel..

    1) Of course I would!!!! I’m not a fan of the sun right now, so of course I would do without, especially with a gorgeous guy willing to go without sun for me as well. The blood would be no biggie for me, and food isn’t that big of a deal either.

    2) Well.. I think to some extent there must be rules to follow when it comes to vampires, because they could get out of hand quickly if not governed, just like any other species of creature.. as for the rules itself, I’ll leave that to the council.. I’d rather frolic under the moonlight.. LOL

    3) I love that vampires are closely related to romance. That’s what keeps me coming back.. well, that and the fangs.. I have a small fang fetish.. LOL

  74. Comment by Ruby E — November 11, 2009 @ 9:43 pm

    1) If you had the opportunity to sign up to become a vampire — gaining everlasting life, riches beyond compare, and a sexy soul mate to spend eternity with - would you do it? Even if it meant drinking blood from donors instead of eating again and never going out in the sun? Why or why not?

I would, I would. I’d love to live forever, even if it means having those downsides. Living forever means seeing the world and noticing all the changes, reading all that you can read, comparing the past vs the present vs what will become in the future! I don’t mind having to drink blood from donors, and sleeping all day and only coming out at night [although that's a drag if I need to sightsee -- maybe if i'm immortal I'll find some way to cure that]

    2) Every vampire novel has its own “rules” about what vampires can or cannot do. If you created your own vampire world, what would your rules be?

My rules would be… hmmmm…..that vampires could go out in the sun and live like human people, albeit we’re immortal?

    3) Obviously there are a lot of vampire books out there. What keeps you reading them? (Or are you sick to death of them and wish the trend would be quickly “staked”?)

The immortality!!! The riches beyond compare, the elusiveness of these vampires! :)

Question for marianne — why vampires? why not other paranormal creatures? Why the fascination for these characters and what made you shape them into the characters that they are in your book?

    1. If my choice was that I had to become a vampire to keep my soul mate, the man that was made only for me in this world, I would have to say yes I would become a vampire. Love conquers all right?
    2. I still really like the thought of vampires as evil and creepy so I would have to say they would have to drink blood of humans to survive and I also like the idea of being able to turn into mist and nothingness.

Great post. I am really looking forward to reading Boys that Bite and I love the new covers.

    1. I dont know. It would require a lot of thought and considerations. I can see both pros and cons. Not a question I can answer at this time. Ask again when the soul mate arrives. :)
    2. I would keep them pretty traditional, except weak sunlight is ok (but not because they sparkle!) but because too much bright sun can affect the blood. Also it can be blood from a bag or blood bank, does not need to be from a vein in a donor, although that has it plus sides. And a blood substitute is being worked on that could possibly have flavors.
    3. I have always loved vamps and always will. There is just something about a sexy immortal with a public viewed bad side that is appealing.

    My questions:
    - Any other series plans out there? What kind of ideas do you have in progress?
    - How do you come up with your character names? Every name or create a character based on someone you know?

That is a great premise. :) What made you want to turn the “sweet normal” twin into the vampire?

1)Liquid diets would be easier and the sun burns my pale skin anyway. The perks sound really good, but do I get to pick my soul mate first?
2)It would be closer to Blade’s abilities in their world and possibly like Spike.
    3) I’m a night owl and like mystery and history. I will never be tired of vampire stories or other books. :)

If I had the opportunity to become a vampire I’d probably do it, ’cause I’d like nothing better than to stay up all night and sleep all day.
If I were to come up with my own vampire rules, I’d want to get rid of some of the myths, like no daylight, no garlic or crosses. I’d like to keep the ability to fly, be super strong, and they wouldn’t need to kill to feed, just take a little with the “donor” feeling no pain, and wiping their memory afterwards.
I keep reading vampire stories because great authors keep coming up with great books for me to read. I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of them.

I RSVP’d, I follow Marianne on Twitter, I follow BBB on Twitter, MySpace, voted in the poll, and subscribe to the newsletter.

    Hey Marianne!

    Thanks for stopping by.

I would totally do the whole vampire thing. There’s something classic and kinda romantic about it.

I actually have my own vampire short story coming out in May next year. You’ll have to read it to find out what my rules are.

What keeps me coming back to vamps? I’d have to say the mystery surrounding the lore and seeing what each author brings to the table in the line of myth and the “rules” you spoke of.

    5 and 7 done and I RSVPed

    HELLO, HELLO, HELLO MARI!!!

    a) ABSOLUTELY! Uh, but I would miss my kids….ABSOLUTELY!!…:) (sorry Emalita)jk - I would love to be immortal if I had a yummy soul mate to spend eternity with. EVEN if I couldn’t go out into the sun! Who would even want to leave the bedroom if they had one of those delish men on some of these covers!!

    b) I think I would write that you can only feed off of your soul mate once you were mated & that it would be a highly erotic and intimate time for you both.. Maybe work something out that you could have babies that “become” once they reach a certain age. That all nightcreatures were respectful of each other and humans…except of course for the naughty guys..

    c) I love to read a vampire novel that is new and has a different spin than the last book I read, and of course when it’s a series…EVEN BETTER! Keep em comin! (That’s my motto!)

    1) I am going to purchase a couple of your books tomorrow, it’s PAYDAY!! What order should I read them in?

    2) What do you prefer? Coffe or tea? Red wine or an ice cold beer? Sweets or Salty? Are your books appropriate for YA? (say 14 year olds) What are you reading right now? What is your favorite book by another author?

    3) Linked to Facebook will post in a few minutes! (I’m soo new at this)

    4) Friended on Facebook will send proff in email in a few minutes! (ditto)

    5) Voted and already entered to win a Kindle!!!

    6) Already friends with BBB/ Already joined BB & LOVIN IT!!

Thanks so much for the new books to read!! Tina-Marie S.

I am finally back. I am looking forward to seeing your 2010 costumes, Marianne, as this year’s were very cool. :)

Okay, my answer to the question of what keeps me coming back to vampire fiction:

Well, you gotta love the vamps, for one thing. :) Mostly though, I think the attraction for me as a reader is the myriad ways that authors approach the subject. I love to see the varied incarnations.

    2. If you had the opportunity to sign up to become a vampire — gaining everlasting life, riches beyond compare, and a sexy soul mate to spend eternity with - would you do it? Even if it meant drinking blood from donors instead of eating again and never going out in the sun? Why or why not?
I don’t believe in vampires so becoming one would be against my beliefs and for the devil and that’s the way I see it. Also, I don’t want to live forever and watch my family die… Therefore, I would never sign up to be a vampire. But I do believe in vampires as fiction in writing and do read books about vampires.

I forgot to answer the questions…….
Vampire. I would want to live forever to see how this world turns out. Now I would also take my family with me if they wanted to. Now my vampire world would be that we could still eat anthing you want and not gain anything because it would help with muscle mass. However you would have to still have blood to keep you young and living for a long time. so it would heal any injuries. sunlight well, in moderation. Stay in shaded area’s with time can grow use to the sun. Must find your soul mate. you have to have that. with out true love life would be really boring.
I don’t think I could ever get tired of vampire stories. I have been reading them since Anne rice wrote Interview w/ Vampire in 1976 so I’m not going to stop now.
Heidi S. I ordered the book but I’m not sure if you got the receipt I will send it again.

    Hi Marianne,

Congrats on the new covers and an to the release in January! What made you want to change the covers from the originals back in 2006? Were you able to have a say in the change for the new covers? Btw, I think the cover shown is pretty smokey… there’s just that hint of something dark and interesting yet her face says innocent, lol. Very cool.

    I believe I rsvp’d and 5 and 6 completed :)

    Hi,

    1. And to watch anyone else that I love die away while I continue to live? No, thanks:)

    2. My vampires would be creepy, pale underworld creatures with constant hunger for blood. They would not have any special powers except for their strength (but it would be like any other trained predator or hunter has, like tigers, wolves etc), and the sun wouldn’t kill them, well, maybe give a bad burn because of their paleness, but they would be simply avoiding it because they’d look so different from normal people, besides, their sight would be adapted to the dark, so they wouldn’t be able to see well in light. Also, they would need rest after the night’s hunt, so they would sleep during the day. And of course, crosses, garlic or fire wouldn’t work on them. It would take a really special person to survive a meeting with any them:)

    3. I like books with humour which lightens the tone of the book, so that it doesn’t get too scary or disgusting. Also, good plot twists always keep me riveted.

A couple of questions for you:

Have you read many vampire novels when you were a teen yourself?
    Which one was your favourite?

    Thanks!

    RSVPed for this

Hi! I love the Sunny and Rayne series, I’ve really enjoyed reading them all! My question to Mari is: I know authors often have multiple ideas for series in their heads while writting, do you have any ideas what you want to write after your current series is over? Do you think you’ll stick with the Paranormal genre?

    thanks!

    1. Would I like to be a vampire? Not really. Eternal life and wealth are nice, but would not want to have to watch those I love dies because they weren’t immortal.
    2. Rules: There would be good vampires acting as guardians of the humans. If a vampire turns someone, they must be turned over to the vampire community to be “raised” and trained.
    3. I keep reading because there are so many variations in the way authors are creating their vampire worlds.

I’m not sure about answers to the first two questons, yet but for the third one:
Obviously there are a lot of vampire books out there. What keeps you reading them? (Or are you sick to death of them and wish the trend would be quickly “staked”?)
I do get a little bit tired sometimes (sometimes not because there are times that the same old, same old is nice) of books that don’t bring anything new to the vampire genre. When authors introduce new elements to the story, whether it’s what the vampires can or can’t do or something with their personalities or how they’re viewed in soceity, that interests me. When the vampire myth is reinvented or given a fresh spin it makes for a really great read regardless of how many books with vampires I’ve already read.
    I RSVP’d, too
