The Oracle of the Missing Dryad by Kristin Groulx
At 17, Alyson Bell does not only have to deal with normal teen-age angst, she also faces an evil witch, a demon, and their “love” child - not to mention, jumping through her different past lives, saving her sisters, and looking for the lost pages of their sacred book. Surely, this is overwhelming for someone who is just learning who she is.
But Alyson does not have a choice. Even though she is very young, the future of mankind and her sisters is thrust on her shoulders. It is up to her to find the lost chapters of Rowen’s book. However, it is a tricky task because she had to go back in time. She realizes the danger and consequences of that activity since changing something in the past means altering the future.
The romance between Ethan and Alyson is really fun to follow. Being a mother of two teen-age girls, Ethan is the kind of boy I would like my daughters to meet. He is willing to wait even if the hormones are strong. That just proves how much he loves Alyson. She is also likable and relatable. Girls would surely like her as a heroine.
However, I do have a few concerns about this novel. First of all, for a young adult read, there are many inappropriate themes that happened in it that I would not recommend this book to my own daughters to read. A teen-ager stripping to seduce a sister’s boyfriend, incest, and the past Madame job of one of the main characters might be too adult for teen-agers aged 13-16. Lastly, so many things are happening in this book that I lost interest a few times. A simple plot is better than a convoluted one. And do not get me started on the cliff hanger at the end. I really hate those in serialized novels, especially if the next one is not coming until after a year.
