The Curse of the Moonless Knight by Kristin Groulx
The Curse of the Moonless Knight continues Alyson Bell’s adventure where The Ghost of Colby Drive
left off. It would be essential for a reader to start with that first before reading this book in order to understand the main characters, especially Alyson, and the plot better.
You would think after her triumph in the first book, things would lighten up a bit for Alyson. After all, she still has regular high school life to deal with, which in itself is overwhelming enough for any teenager, especially with the high school mean girl out to get Alyson. But when a magical portal is opened, her old nemesis, the evil soul vampire Hremm Nevar, is freed, and she finds herself fighting a new enemy as well.
While preparing for the school play, Alyson and her new friends investigate the haunting in their school. They also attend the Renaissance Faire where she meets a knight from the past thrust into the future by a powerful witch. And to further complicate matters, Hremm Nevar kidnaps her friend Sara. Saving her friend and the knight becomes her priority, especially with the added pressure of time restriction. Aside from the many adventures she experiences, Alyson also finds out the truth about herself and her place in the magical world.
Alyson is as engaging as ever and even more likable than before after seeing her maturity. Young readers will surely enjoy her adventures. However, so many things happen in this novel that it becomes overwhelming and tiring. Furthermore, Alyson’s magical “family” tree is too much to accept. The idea of her mother being her sister as well and all seven sisters having the same mother but different fathers is too convoluted for a young adult book.
