Posted under Chat, Contests, Interviews, Site News, Videos by Site Hostess on Tuesday 10 November 2009 at 12:41 pm

A big welcome to our readers today! Be sure to read to the end of the interview to find out how to WIN the fabulous prizes being offered up.

PLEASE NOTE: This is not a fixed time event, the post just goes live at 12:00 pm Central. You can stop by any time during the day or evening and leave your questions and chat.

PLEASE KEEP SPOILERS TO A MINIMUM. Not all of the readers today have read Stacey’s book.

Interview:

Hi Stacey!

Welcome to Bitten by Books, we are excited to have you here today!

I would like to thank you taking the time to join us for the question and answer session with our readers. It has been very interesting to get to know more about you and what makes you tick as a writer! Readers, if you haven’t done so already please stop by and purchase your copy of Stacey’s book Thunder and Blood.

BBB: What are the most challenging and the most rewarding aspects of writing?

SV: I think the most challenging thing for me these days is actually sitting down to write. I’m constantly getting distracted by marketing activities and other aspects of my normal life. I should be almost half-way through Thunder and Ice right now, but I’ve barely made any progress.

The most rewarding thing for me is when my characters take on a life of their own and do something unexpected. Usually it’s something that just works and it makes me feel like the novel is writing itself. That’s an amazing feeling.

BBB: We’ve seen a lot of paranormal romances with vampires lately. How did you come up with making Thunder and Blood alternate history as well?

SV: Well, I wrote Thunder and Blood starting with the vampire concept and the alternate history sort of came with my surroundings at the time. I was living in Germany and there is so much history all over the place there. We had been visiting various castles and I thought it would be really cool to see a castle in my home town.

BBB: Do you consider Thunder and Blood paranormal romance or urban fantasy? and do you think it is important to distinguish between the two?

SV: Actually, I consider it paranormal fantasy. To be honest, I only came up with that definition recently and I’ve had a really difficult time classifying it at all. I personally don’t think it’s important to distinguish that closely between genres, as long as you have the general idea of what kind of story it is.

BBB: What is the most ridiculous thing that you have thought about doing to any of your characters but never did?

SV: Well….to be honest, I used to write a lot of short stories with my characters doing incredibly ridiculous things. There was the bank robber who got caught because he lost a glass eye, the scorned ex-wife who killed her ex-husband and his new girlfriend with a spoon from her great-grandmother’s silverware, and the girl who worked in a used porn shop. I’m not sure if I ever really held back. I’m just a little kooky like that.

BBB: How do you keep track of your world building?

SV: Not well enough, unfortunately. That’s another reason why Thunder and Ice is behind schedule. I’m going through Thunder and Blood again and making notes so that I don’t mess myself up in the sequel. Post-it notes are my best friends right now, but I’m going to put everything into another program after I’m done with Thunder and Ice.

BBB: What do you feel are the benefits of the new electronic readers such as Kindle 2 or Sony Digital Book Reader to the environment?

SV: Obviously they save on paper, but there’s just something especially rewarding about holding a book in your hand. While I’m sure they will gain even more in popularity as time goes by, I’m sure there will always be a few hold-outs who prefer a tangible book.

BBB: What impact do electronic readers create on the bottom line for authors in the end? Do you feel they have a negative impact or positive, or no impact at all that you can see?

SV: I’m not really sure. I’ve been giving out the pdf version of Thunder and Blood for free all year. I’ve probably given out more than three times the number of pdfs compared to hard copies. I’m not sure if those people who received it for free would have bought the hard copy. I think that authors are going to have to adjust to all of these changes in technology and realize that electronic readers can make books more affordable to all readers in the long run and thus encourage more sales. The key is going to be whether the electronic copies are going to remain at a lower price than hard copies. I think if they replace hard copies altogether, they will start to cost a similar amount. In that case, they may have no impact at all in the end.

BBB: Can you tell us about your series and the general storylines that drives it?

SV: My series takes place in an alternate universe where, in the fifteenth century, vampires took a leading role in world politics and now control the human population. During their takeover, they decimated the human population, so a special vampire scientist/prophet created gateways that would open to other worlds once a month, replenishing the human population. Thunder and Blood begins when two women from our world cross into the vampire world and have to come to terms with the differences and the fact that vampires are real. Thunder and Ice will continue from the end of Thunder and Blood and introduce new characters. There are two prequels planned as well – one describing the takeover of the Earth by vampires and the other about the evolution of the very first vampire.

BBB: What else do you currently have in the works? When can we expect your next book?

SV: Well, as I mentioned, I’m supposed to be working on Thunder and Ice right now. No matter what, it will be released in May of next year.

BBB: What challenges will Sarah and Christine be facing in the second book?

SV: Christine will be trying to adapt to her new role as leader of Donner and Sarah is going to have to deal with the Vampire Council. There will be other challenges, but I don’t want to give too much away.

BBB: Are you as close to your siblings in real life as Sarah and Christine were in the book?

SV: Not really. My brother and I talk about once a month (he lives on the coast). We get along much better now than we did when we were younger, but I wouldn’t describe us as especially close.

BBB: Where do you see the paranormal/urban fantasy genre headed? Can you see it slowing down in the near future, or do you think that the immediate future is pretty bright for it?

SV: Well, it’s not really a new genre, Anne Rice has been popular for years, and I can remember reading books about werewolves when I was in my early 20s. I think it’s just come to the forefront now because of the popularity of Twilight and the fact that it’s a vampire series that is especially attractive to teenage girls (and more mature women as well). I’m sure it will slow down a bit after the Twilight movies are done, but it won’t go away.

BBB: Do you have any personal traits that you have written into the characters of your books?

SV: Sarah is a lot like I was when I was 24. At that point in my life I had just left my first husband (but no, he didn’t cheat on me) and was suffering a lot of self-doubt. I’m sure the other characters have bits and pieces of me in them, but Sarah is the easiest for me to identify.

BBB: If your series had a theme song what would it be?

SV: lol. That’s one I’ve never thought of before. First thing that comes to mind is AC/DC’s Highway to Hell. :P

BBB: Do you have any plans for book signings/ readings anytime soon? If so, where can our readers find you?

SV: Well, my virtual tour is continuing. Readers can check my blog at http://www.thunderandblood.com/content/My_Blog/50-September_20th for the full schedule. I’m hoping to do a signing at the Chapters Thunder Bay location in the near future, as well as at the McNally-Robinson Winnipeg location in the spring.

    Hi Jojo,

I’ve always wanted to be a writer. I also wanted to be a teacher. I’ve been very lucky to have been able to be both in my life, although I took a round-about route. I went to school first for International Business, then got a degree in Psychology with a minor in English Lit. I taught Business English in Germany and business and computers when I first got back to Canada. Now I get to focus on my writing for a few years.

  7. Comment by Stacey Voss — November 10, 2009 @ 1:48 pm

    Hi Carol M.

I enjoy reading a variety of genres, from horror, to crime, to thriller, to sci-fi and fantasy. It really depends on my mood and what books I have around me at the moment.

  9. Comment by Stacey Voss — November 10, 2009 @ 1:53 pm

    Hi Amanda L.

I’ve been reading Stephen King novels from a ridiculously young age (I read Pet Semetary when I was nine). I also went through a long Dean Koontz and John Saul phase when I was in my teen years. I moved on to Anne Rice next. I think they’ve all had strong influences on me as a writer. There are a lot of fantasy and science fiction writers who have influenced me as well. Basically, whenever I read a book I look at the writing style and the words that they use.

My whole family has been extremely supportive of me with my writing. My husband was in school during the three years we lived in Germany and I supported the family financially while working as an English teacher. Once we got established back in Canada, my husband agreed to let me have a go at writing and stay-at-home motherhood.

  10. Comment by Stacey Voss — November 10, 2009 @ 1:56 pm

    Hi Jessica,

Thunder and Blood come from the first word of my hometown (Thunder Bay) where the novel takes place and the fact that vampires rule the world and have blood as currency. The name for the village that is the main location of the novel is Donner, which means Thunder in German.

I think my favourite author right now is Dean Koontz. I wonder if he’ll ever write a vampire series. That would be cool.

  11. Comment by Stacey Voss — November 10, 2009 @ 1:58 pm

    Hi Moonsanity,

I do a lot of mental outlining - meaning that I have the outline in my head. I have an idea of where the story is going to end up and a few bits and pieces of what happens in the middle and I tend to just let it flow from there. I do a lot of editing at the end.

    Hi Fallon,

None of my favourite authors have read my book yet that I know of. I think I would be thrilled if they even tolerated it. I get excited whenever I read a review of my book and know that someone has liked it. It’s a very surreal feeling. I think I’d probably fall off of my chair if one of my own favourite authors read my work and liked it.

  14. Comment by Valorie B — November 10, 2009 @ 2:03 pm

    Hi Sandy,

I based one character, Adelaide, on my best friend. I wanted to have a strong independent woman character so I took the best traits of my friend and changed a few things. The physical description is dead on, however.

  16. Comment by Stacey Voss — November 10, 2009 @ 2:04 pm

    Hi Valorie,

Right now I’m rereading Twilight. I’m just getting ready for the New Moon release on the 20th. I’m going to be doing a girls’ night with my 12 year-old daughter who likes vampires, but is totally obsessed with zombies. :P

I think my love of paranormal fantasy just came naturally as I grew up. My mother was always a big Stephen King fan and my tastes started and evolved from there.

  23. Comment by Stacey Voss — November 10, 2009 @ 2:12 pm

    Hi Heidi,

I love to read anything fictional. My friends and family are constantly giving me tonnes of second-hand books and I give anything a try. I just love having a book in my hand and being able to escape into someone else’s world.

If you want to be a writer I think reading is the first best thing you can do. By reading, you learn a lot about the language and you absorb a lot of grammar that way. The next thing is to have your work thoroughly proofread before sending it anywhere. Remember that your work is representative of you and when it is disjointed you seem the same way and your story (however amazing) can get lost. The first edition of Thunder and Blood has a few typos left in it and it embarrasses me every time I even think of it. There will be a second edition coming out in January or February, complete with a map and pronunciation guide.

  24. Comment by Stacey Voss — November 10, 2009 @ 2:15 pm

I’ll answer all of your questions Heidi.

I’ve always dreamed of going to Brazil. I’ve already had the good fortune of living in Europe for three years, so I’ve been lucky enough to get to Paris already. My father-in-law moved to Brazil last year, so we’re planning to visit him there for Christmas 2010.

Other places I dream to go to are Greece and Italy. I never did get to either of those.

  25. Comment by patsy hagen — November 10, 2009 @ 2:21 pm

Hi, Stacey. I had three or four questions for you, but they were all answered in the interview, so I will have to be satisfied with telling you…I really enjoy your writing and hope you have many more books to come.

  26. Comment by Stacey Voss — November 10, 2009 @ 2:25 pm

Thanks Patsy. It’s people like you that keep me writing. I never realized before how nerve-wracking it could be to be a writer. It’s like putting your guts out on display for everyone to critique.

  27. Comment by TMarie — November 10, 2009 @ 2:32 pm

    Hi Stacey,

I’ll be honest, I haven’t read any of your books but I have added them to my TBR list. Your book look great!

Who is your favorite author today???..:)

    Tina Marie S.

  28. Comment by Stacey Voss — November 10, 2009 @ 2:36 pm

    Hi TMarie,

Today my favourite author is … Dean Koontz. I’m still waiting for more books from him. I like his style of writing and the fact that he still manages to pull out unique story lines after having written so many books.

  29. Comment by Lisa M — November 10, 2009 @ 2:43 pm

Hi Stacey, Thanks fro being here. Your book looks very intriguing. I find with so many paranormal books out there, it’s refreshing to see some new ideas and concepts for storylines come up.
    (I did RSVP)

  30. Comment by Stacey Voss — November 10, 2009 @ 2:47 pm

    Thanks Lisa,

I wrote my book before I got back into reading vampire fiction, which I think helped to keep the ideas fresh. I hadn’t even read Twilight yet, although I doubt I would have been influenced to make my vampires sparkle. :P

  31. Comment by Shellie N — November 10, 2009 @ 2:50 pm

    Hi Stacey -
I am looking forward to reading your book. I just added you on goodreads and will add you on twitter and to my author’s list.
    Shellie :)

  32. Comment by Libby L — November 10, 2009 @ 2:53 pm

    I RSVP’d
Hi Stacey! Nice interview - I enjoyed reading it! :) I am definitely adding your book to my TBR list. I love a good vampire story - especially one that adds other aspects to their world.

I am curious - if you could change the ending of ANY book in history. What would it be? What would you do?

If you could have any book made into a movie (that isn’t already one) - which book? Who would you cast in the role?

I’ll post a comment with Twitter kinks, etc when I’m on a computer. (Im on a cell right now)

I’ve enjoyed reading your interview, Stacey! & I can’t wait to read your book! I Think we need more than 24 hours in a day so we can read more! :) if I’ve made any typos - please forgive me! lol. Sometimes spellcheck keeps changing “thing” into “thong” for some reason! Embarrassing when you ask someone how are “thongs” today! :)

  33. Comment by Libby L — November 10, 2009 @ 2:54 pm

Ha!! Here I go asking people to ignore typos & I see I typed “Twitter kinks”. lol! :D I meant “links” obviously’! ;)

  34. Comment by Stacey Voss — November 10, 2009 @ 3:06 pm

    Hi Libby,

Pssht! I didn’t mean in online communications! Typos pop up everywhere in casual “conversation”. Notice I’m avoiding your questions? They’re hard.

Wait! I just thought of a book that I would change the ending to. I was disappointed in the ending of the Dark Tower series. I wanted something more confrontational and conclusive. I’m not exactly sure how it should otherwise end, but I didn’t feel satisfied at the end.

Hmmm…my choice? I’m not usually a fan of movies that have been adapted from books. They’re generally unsatisfying. I’m not sure I’d wish that on any of my favourite books.

How about I say my book, just to give my city a tourism economic boost, and so that I could meet Jensen Ackles, who I would want to play Hillard. :D

    Hi Alicia,

I like Giselle. She seems to have quite a bit of depth and is a mother-hen type. I think we’re going to learn a lot of about her in the next book.

  43. Comment by Stacey Voss — November 10, 2009 @ 3:53 pm

    Hi Raelena,

Even though I’ve answered this one a few times already:

Dean Koontz, Stephen King, Orsen Scott Card, Robert Jordan, Anne Rice, Patricia Cornwell, George R.R. Martin, and many more!

Actually, I don’t think I had quite the full list earlier, so good question!

  44. Comment by Stacey Voss — November 10, 2009 @ 3:59 pm

    Hi Jennifer,

That’s a really tough question because I discover new favourites all the time. I have some favourite series, but no singular book. I love finding a fantastic series that I can’t put down. One that I’ve bought twice and read repeatedly is Dean Koontz’s Fear Nothing series (not sure if it’s called that. I also like Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series, and George R.R. Martin’s Songs of Fire and Ice series.

    Hi Raonaid,

I get some amazing questions on these tour stops. Collaboration is another thing I’ve never thought of. I guess I would want to choose someone that I know has collaborated well in the past with others. I’d go with Stephen King because, well, that would just be awesome.

  57. Comment by Stacey Voss — November 10, 2009 @ 5:41 pm

    Hi Cyd,

Somehow I missed your question way up there. I lived in Germany for three years. My husband is German and he was finishing school, so my daughter and I moved there. After he finished we decided that we wanted to live in Canada.

  58. Comment by Kim Fetzer — November 10, 2009 @ 5:56 pm

    Hi Stacey,

After reading this interview and your replies to the questions, I’m definitely interested in reading this book/series. I have a few questions too!

    Is this your first book?

Are you planning on having Thunder and Blood (and future books) available on Kindle anytime soon?

I noticed which books are your favorites (they’re some of mine as well!) and wanted to know if your writing is similar in style to Jordan or Martin? Do you think of your writing as “fantasy” or “romance”, I know you don’t like labels but Jordan/Martin/Koontz are more fantasy/sci-fi, etc., whereas Kresley Cole for example is more romance based?

Do the main characters have love interests in this book or possibly in the future of the series?

Last Question! Are the Vampires good (light and/or dark) or bad (Buffy’s Vamps)?

Also, I apologize if these questions were answered in the last 15 mins or so, it took me a while to type all these up! If so, just ignore mine :)
    Thanks for your patience :)

    Hi Dina,

I’m not sure whether I’ll be doing any conventions in the near future. I’m pregnant now and will have a new baby next year, so we’ll see what my energy levels are like.

  65. Comment by Stacey Voss — November 10, 2009 @ 7:47 pm

    Hi Kim,

This is my first book and I’m so excited to have it so well-received.

I’m working on releasing Thunder and Blood in Kindle format, but I have to work on getting a US Tax Number (I’m Canadian) first. Hopefully I’ll have it done by the new year (or the end of January at the latest).

I think my style is closer to Martin. I’m not completely comfortable writing out battle scenes and Jordan’s books are full of them. My characters do have romantic interests, but I wouldn’t necessarily classify my books as romance. I try to have some romance to interest the female readers, but not so much as to alienate the male readers out there.

My vampires are both good and evil. I’m not sure if that’s even a good classification. My vampires are just people who live an extremely long time and are physically superior to most humans. Some are bad (or insane as the case may be), some are good, and some are just people.

    Hi Deana,

I haven’t read all of the vampire novels out there, but mine is a bit different in that there is a “scientific” basis for how they came to be. Everyone likes to say that their vampires are different from other vampires, but I think that the setting (an alternate reality with an alternate history bringing medieval times to the present) and the fact that blood has become the currency in that world, set my story apart from others in the genre.

Of course, I could be completely wrong about that. There might be another out there that I haven’t read or heard of yet.

  70. Comment by Stacey Voss — November 10, 2009 @ 7:57 pm

    Hi Elie,

Wow! Three wishes! Um…..I’d wish that it could remain financially viable for me to stay focused on writing and not have to go back to a “normal” job.
I’m pregnant right now, so I’d wish that I’d have a healthy baby. Lastly, I’d wish that I could have introduced my husband and children to my dad (he passed away in 1996).

I know I should have wished for world peace, but that’s just so cliche. :P

    Hi Stacey

When you write a novel, do you write it in chronological order [from chapter 1 to the end, and stop if you have no idea what to write next] or do you write it in parts, depending on what idea/conflict/scenario you had at the time then eventually pull your ideas together and make it the finished product?

  86. Comment by Stacey Voss — November 10, 2009 @ 10:18 pm

    Hi Lisa,

The cover encompasses two recurring themes in the book. The Sleeping Giant (the landmass at the edge of the water is a major landmark for Thunder Bay. If you see that view, you know exactly where you are. The glowing green eyes are the most identifiable physical trait of the vampires in my novel. I had an amazing graphic designer who did exactly what I wanted with the cover.

I came up with the idea for the book when I was a teenager, driving through the back roads outside of Thunder Bay. My car was suddenly encompassed by an extremely thick fog that prevented me from seeing the edges of the road or even any oncoming traffic. It was a terrifying experience, but when I got home I thought “What a cool idea for a story!” I didn’t develop it fully for long time though.

  87. Comment by Stacey Voss — November 10, 2009 @ 10:20 pm

    Hi Ruby,

I wrote Thunder and Blood chronologically, often discovering what was going to happen as I typed it in. I don’t think I’ve ever written anything out of order.

    hi, stacey.
well i just wanted to say that I find thunder and blood really interesting and no, I have not YET read it, but I will. Promise. so my question is : What would you advice someone who is thinking about becoming an author? and do you recommend it? thank you for your time ..

  89. Comment by Stacey Voss — November 10, 2009 @ 10:35 pm

    Hi Karina,

My advice for someone who wants to become an author is write, write, and proofread. Grammar really is important in the finished product before you send it out to anyone who is not a family member. I love being an author, but it doesn’t pay the bills, so unless you have another income to live on, don’t quit your job and decide to be an author. I’ve been super lucky that my husband has a fantastic job and I can stay home for the time being and write.

  93. Comment by darchole — November 10, 2009 @ 11:33 pm

It seems no matter how an authors tried to keep track of world building and those little details, there is always something that trips them up when writting the next book.

Is it harder to keep track of world building because the alternate timeline/world issue?

  94. Comment by Stacey Voss — November 10, 2009 @ 11:37 pm

    Hi darchole,

I think it does make it harder. I have all of the information about the world in my head, but I forget which parts my readers know from Thunder and Blood, and which parts I haven’t revealed yet. I’ve also changed my mind about a few things here and there and I have to check back to make sure that it hasn’t already been set in stone (or on paper) and can’t be changed now. World building is one of my favourite parts of this series. It’s so interesting to create a world where the people have different motivations and experiences than we do here.

I’m just curious Stacey - I already asked my question, but since you mentioned Stephen King I have to ask! What is your favorite film adaptation out of any of the King short stories or novels? You mentioned with my question about not liking film versions of your favorite books. (I don’t either) but I’m curious about the King films. :)

    Hi Beverly,

I LOVED the Canary Islands! We stayed on Tenerife for two weeks and it was fantastic. Up until that vacation I never understood people who could go to a resort for a vacation. The relaxation, food, and site-seeing were amazing. To my chagrin, however, I ended up driving through the mountains. That wasn’t fun for me because I’m slightly afraid of heights and somewhat night blind and I was the only driver on that car.

My dream vacation right now would be to go to Greece. Actually, since winter is starting here, anywhere warm would be nice, but since we’re expecting a new baby, we probably won’t be going far from home for the next two years (except for Brazil at Christmas 2010).

    Hi Cassandra,

I’m not sure if Dean Koontz counts a paranormal fiction - he has spooky and weird stuff going on all the time. I like Anne Rice’s early stuff very much (Vampire Chronicles and the Mayfair Witches) and I really enjoyed Kim Harrison’s Rachel Morgan stories.

  107. Comment by Stacey Voss — November 11, 2009 @ 7:28 am

    Hi Stacey,

I’m not tied to any one genre. I have some ideas for some different kinds of books, so we’ll see what comes out. I’ll probably write whatever catches my fancy at the moment. The third book in Thunder and Blood will be heading into the 15th century, so we’ll see how I like that. :D

it is always nice to see others who share the kind of reading that i have enjoyed i wish there was a way to make these books part of the regular reading list suggested by the schools i believe that more people will read and think without being glued to techno devices with the exception of the ebooks format for Kindle and pcs i have always found that authors of any paranormal issues use words very poetic what better way to learn grammer without effort instead of those dull books the make you read (no offense to Dickens etc.) but they don’t always catch the readers attention unless forced to read i used books of the supernatural to entice my children to read and it worked so please keep writing always.

I voted for Mark Henry, Kat Richardson, and Michele Bardsley! YAY THEM!

  111. Comment by Nicole Peeler — November 11, 2009 @ 10:51 am

And I commented on the wrong post! I’m a moron!

Here’s what I meant to say to Stacy:

“Hi Stacy! Love the cover. And I hear ya on the time issues with writing. That said, anything with an AC/DC soundtrack has to be awesome. Looking forward to the book and good luck!”

Okay, I feel better. Why can I never work comments? *sighs*

    Hi Stacey,

Which aspect of the publishing industry surprised you the most now that you are published?

    I RSVPed.

  113. Comment by Lisa D. — November 11, 2009 @ 12:27 pm

Hi, I RSVPed. I have not read your work yet, but plan to now. I think that an alternate world is a great idea. Look at Fringe on tv, it is something that has caught on also! I joined your group on facebook and left a comment for you. I get the BBB newletter

  114. Comment by Stacey Voss — November 11, 2009 @ 2:00 pm

    Hi Toni,

I’ve done two radio interviews so far. My first was for a US Syndicated Show called Dresser After Dark, and the second was for CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation). No TV interviews yet, which I’m fine with because I’m camera-shy.

  115. Comment by Stacey Voss — November 11, 2009 @ 2:01 pm

    Hi Lesley,

I think the thing that surprised me the most is the dominance of the Internet in book marketing these days. While it may have surprised me, I’m totally thrilled about it because it makes my job much easier.

  116. Comment by R.E.B. — November 11, 2009 @ 10:20 pm

How many post-it notes does it take to write one book?

    Heehee. Thank you for interviewing.

    5 done.
