This is our Monday Book Chat posted early. So, lets talk about books!
One of our staff reviewers here at BBB Carol, has been kind enough to help me out with some topics for discussion on various books. She’s worked with many of our favorite authors on panels at Dragon*con etc. She has some great questions to stir up our discussion today!
Today’s book discussion will be around Blue Moon book one in the Night Creatures series by Lori Handeland.
Read a review of Blue Moon here: http://bittenbybooks.com/?p=6337
Today’s questions:
In Blue Moon, Lori Handeland devises an intriguing premise for lycanthropy. How do you like her unique approach?
What do you think of the romantic elements in the book?
What is your favorite aspect of the novel?
Note: If you are going to post major spoiler, be sure to post this first in your comment. Do this

I’ve RSVP’d for 2-4. Can’t go to the chat until tomorrow.
Hi,
I just started collecting this series to read. So I don’t really know anything about it. So can someone tell me why this would be a good series to read and what makes it so good? You know like do her characters do something that just catches your attention.
thank you

An intriguing premise for lycanthropy? Wow, sounds interesting. I really like when authors take liberties with old lore and twist it to make it their own. I haven’t read any of the Nightcreature series, would anyone recommend it? If so, why? What makes these books so special I would need to read them?
2, 3, and 4, done
well, i admit it, that Lori is a new for me.

i saw that there’s already 8 book of this series, and i still haven’t read any of them
and i do like to win if it’s my lucky day

1. Read “Blue Moon” and was totally blown away because it was the start of my love affair with the Paranormal world and have been hooked ever since then. I of course had been in love with Anne Rice for a while before reading Lori Handeland but when started with her Night Creature series have since bought all the books written and am eagerly anticipating when the next book will come out as she has taken up the series again. I love the premise she has used in the series for lycanthropy, have utter glee in the unfolding of the romance that develops in each segment with the different characters and my favorite aspect of the novel Blue Moon is that good triumphs over evil and lives to fight another day….. This beginning book in the series was in my eyes the best book as it started the whole ball game rolling, my 2nd favorite book was Crescent Moon set in New Orleans Louisiana and my 3rd favorite is Hidden Moon.

For those of you who have not read the books, what are you waiting for they are excellent adventures waiting to take you to a place in your imagination it is well worth going again and again with wonderful characters and settings in each one.
Jackie B in Central Texas
Blue Moon is one of my favorite books by her. Lori has this uncanny habit to create tough, sarcastic female heroines that just appeals to me. I just find that I like her characterization of them better than any author I know (along with Kenyon and Lackey)
Jesse’s personality and dry wit put me greatly in mind of a friend of mine. I remember sending the book up to her stating “READ THIS. Jesse makes me think of you.”
But Will is amazing too in the books.
I haven’t really found a book by Lori that I have disliked. I even liked her old title (Full Moon Dreams), that I happened by chance at a flea market (I think I paid a dollar for it). I first was introduced to Handleland in Stroke of Midnight anthology; I had read her short story there and said “I HAVE to have these books.”
My copy of Blue Moon is signed (I had won the first three signed, and the copies I already owned I gifted to a friend of mine)
I’ve been reading Lori Handeland for years and love the new series, I’ve always been intrigued by how she wraps a little history into her books.
I’d like to know what kind of research Lori does for her books?
Ooops. Will attend the interview, chat and contest with Mindy Klasky tomorrow
RSVPed to Stacey Voss and Marianne Mancusi
Hmmm, don’t know her. :wince: so the characters change from one heroine to another?
1-4 Done.
Aori–yes, as far as I’ve read, each book has a different central hero and heroine. I’ve only read Blue Moon in the series though, so I can’t speak for any of the other books, but Jesse is a strong, amazing heroine!
Hi Lori,
How do you come up with ideas for your stories?

I have read and loved all of Lori’s “Night Creature” series. Her books were one of the first paranormals that I had read. Was immediately hooked. The Native American spin on the werewolf legend is a gem. I loved the main character, she is snarky and doesn’t put up with much. There are 8 books in this series and two more are due out. This is a series that needs to be read in order or you will spoil the unraveling of the storyline. She has enough history involved in this storyline to make you go hum, it’s possible. The twists and turns in her plot keeps you guessing and sucks you right in. I very highly recommend this series to anyone who loves paranormals. Once you start reading these books you will not want to put them down. Her main characters in all the books are strong women that are so believable.
Ooops, will do 2 & 3& 4 are done.
Have any of your character ever been based on real people, at least partially? Thanks!
I have never read her before. I was just wondering if anyone who had could relate her to another author for me (If you like _________, then you will like these). As much as I don’t need anymore series books to read, I will have to look into these based on the comments made so far.
thanks for all the great comments everyone! You made my day!
Terrie asked about my research–I do quite a bit of research for my books. Start out with general books, end up with more specific ones, internet sources and some interviews. I have a list on my site of the research books used in the NC novels.
I don’t know how I come up with my ideas. I’ve always figured if I knew that I wouldn’t come up with them anymore! Usually something very small that I read or see sparks the what if question and I go from there.
I have not based any of my characters on real people. Although I’ve been told that there’s a little bit of me in each one.
Good morning, everyone. Many thanks for stopping by.
Hi Lori!
So glad to see you here again!
Okay, a few people had questions that I would like to address:
1.) Heidi asked, what makes the book/series so good?
First, I would say that the intriguing explanation for lycanthropy, which sets up the whole series, is one of the book’s major attractions.
Second, the fact that certain aspects of the novel keep you guessing until the end makes the book a true page-turner.
Those aspects combined with cool, interesting characters qualifies the book in the “awesome” category for me.
2.) Lisa B., YES — I highly recommend the book. See reasons above.
3.) Jessa wants to know what other author can this series be compared to.
Well, that’s kind of hard for me to answer, because I found the book to be so unique. However, I would say that if you like urban fantasy with a dose of romance, you should very much enjoy this book. If you like a bit of history and the “real” world mixed into your paranormal fiction, you should like this one.
New question:
I mentioned the element of suspense as being one of my favorite aspects of the novel. If you have read this book, did you enjoy that element as much as I did? If you haven’t read it yet, do you typically consider suspense amd mystery important to your reading experience in this genre?
I have been reading your books for quiet a while now and they always keep me intrested and thinking! How did you decide to write about Will or did he just tell his secrets to you as he saw fit?
1. I’m sad to say I haven’t read any of Lori’s books yet, though I have heard great things about several of them. I just have such a long list of books to read! From the sounds of it, this series needs to move up towards the top. I love it when I hear about an author putting a new spin on things. Can’t wait to start this series! For those that have read it, how do you like reading a series that has a different hero/heroine in each book?

ah, Lori Handeland’s books have been on my TBR pile for so long, I feel as if I know the books already because I have read so much about them. I honestly don’t know why I keep putting them off! shame on me!
I have been to Mindy’s interview and contest today and posted a link on my FB profile page
all my other RSVPs are done and I do plan to attend all the events (have I missed one, yet? ) well, ok, maybe i have missed one. lol
I will be spreading the word. Have a great week everyone and see you all here tomorrow for the next interview/contest. It’s going to be a busy week for me at work, but I usually try to find a moment to sneak away to pop over! xoxo Lisa
I haven’t read Lori’s books - but after reading this info I want to add it to my list! Heidi asked what I would like to know about the series. I am intrugued by the series since my usual fare is vampire series - I haven’t read many Lycan stories.

Lisa D-I’m not real sure how Will came about. I wanted him to be different. Sensitive and buff, smart and a little geeky. He definitely needed to be a special guy to handle Jessie.
I like this series a lot. I’m on Hidden Moon right now (book #7) and have not been disappointed yet. I like the mystery, the romance and the author’s take on weres. It’s a unique perspective on something that can be done and has been done so many different ways.
I haven’t read this book, but I think I have enjoyed one of her short stories. How are her werewolves different?

REB, I can’t answer that without giving away a big part of the plot. Let me just say that the uniqueness is in regards to their origins.
I have read all her Nightcreature novels and love them and am so looking to more of them. I really like her take on where the werewolves comes from!
I know we are suppose to be talking about the Nightcreature books, but I was wondering about the Phoenix chronicles. What do people think about this series? Just interested in some thoughts. I put it on my ‘interested’ list, but always good to hear 1st hand knowledge.
2,3 ,4 are done
I haven’t read this book. I love stories that deal with Lycantrophy. I am excited to read this book.

Hi Everyone
Blue Moon was the first Lori Handeland book I read. I was hooked after that, I have evryone in the series and they are very good reads.I agree with Darkreader, I love her take on where werewolves come from too… its different. I’m looking forward to starting her Phoenix Chronicles.

I’m currently reading the Night Creature series, waiting on Hidden Moon from Amazon. I love the Native American legends & Voodoo. The series has been one amazing book after another. My favorite is Hunter’s Moon so far, I like Damian & Leigh’s story. The storyline for the New Orleans books (Crescent, Midnight & Rising) are really good, too. I haven’t been hooked on Werewolves until now.
****SPOILER***
My question for Lori Handeland, in Rising Moon, Katie doesn’t want to be cured, and escapes from Anne. Will you be writing another book for Katie?
**SPOILER**
1) In Blue Moon, Lori Handeland devises an intriguing premise for lycanthropy. How do you like her unique approach?
I loved Lori’s premise for the creation of werewolves. I started out thinking the werewolves were evil creatures, and they were, I suppose. But that changed somewhat when I learned the werewolves were created in Nazi labs, against their will. That made them less evil and more tragic.
2) What do you think of the romantic elements in the book?
If I remember correctly (it’s been awhile since reading the book), the romantic relationship between Jessie and Will was strained/tense for a long time. It took a long time for her to warm up to him. I never understood why!! He seemed perfect to me. Smart & sexy.
3) What is your favorite aspect of the novel?
I loved the main characters, especially Jessie. She was tough, strong and sassy.
Blue Moon is a great start to the Nightcreatures series. Highly recommended!!

I loved the uniquenes of series. Your one of my favorite authors.
I have RSVPed for all the rest.
I’m curious how the author came up with the idea for this book??
Kristi-I may write Katie’s story in the future.
Thanks for all the lovely kudos everyone. I just re-read Blue Moon myself and I love that book!
Wanda-I wanted to write a book about werewolves–love them!–and wanted a different take. It occurred to me, who would be evil enough to create a werewolf, or a whole army of them and voila! the answer to that question gave me the premise.
Hey I have’nt read any of either series yet but just read several excerpts from her home page and both series look really interesting . I’ll be looking for them soon.
I have read all of Lori’s Night Creature Series and loved them all. I think my favorite was Blue Moon. Wow Will Cadotte is hot, hot, hot! I love her take on the lycan theme. I think her character Jesse was fantastic. I loved her smart, strong, sarcastic personality. Really well written books. I highly recommend them!!! I am breathlessly awaiting the next book….hopefully she will get back the the series soon!!
Contest #’s 2-4 Done!
I have read all of Lori’s Night Creature books and can hardly wait for the next one to come out. I love here take on werewolves.

Have to admit it’s been several.. [cough] years since I read this one, and it’s one I no longer have so I can’t refresh. [no storage room for physical books]
There are still 2 in this series I haven’t read, but those I have read have been great. I love paranormal stories, and when you find a series with a completely diff. take on a species it’s wonderful. Too many authors jumping on the paranormal bandwagon now, I still mostly prefer the authors that have been writing it for awhile like Lori..
This is one of a few series that are automatic I wants when I see a new one out… they are worth looking for the full series.
2-5 done
I haven’t gotten to read this book yet, but am looking for to.
2-5 all done!
Lori is by far one of my favorite authors. Her NightCreatures series is awesome! If you haven’t read it, you need to check it out soon! Blue Moon was one of the first paranormal romances I ever read, and I have been hooked on the genre ever since.
