Dragon Actually by G. A. Aiken
Annwyl the Bloody tends to go crazy when she’s angry - like skewering, decapitating soldiers crazy. She’s backed into the Dark Glen by soldiers loyal to her brother and is nearly gutted when a dragon decides to have a little barbecue and save her life.
The dragon is Fearghus the Destroyer, a loner among his own kind, content to stay in his cave until he feels the need to snack. But something about Annwyl calls to him, and he finds himself helping her heal, teaching her to fight, and befriending her. He also finds himself deeply attracted to her, while in dragon form and human form.
G. A. Aiken’s Dragon Actually came highly recommended, and now I know why. The strange relationship between Fearghus and his siblings is so normal it’s funny. They taunt each other (“I’m telling!” “No you’re not!”) like children, but pull together when the time for battle arrives.
The battle scenes really make this book. Never before have I cringed and laughed at the same time. Annwyl is a fierce fighter and she doesn’t have to rely on the hero or any fancy weaponry to win her battles. She’s one of the first heroines I’ve read about that has truly been able to stand on her own two feet.
If you’re looking for a light, humorous read that happens to include a little blood and guts, this book is for you. The writing style is a bit choppy at times, switching from one character’s perspective to another after a short passage, but it becomes easier to follow the further along you read.
I give this book 4 tombstones for managing to turn a family of dragons into a circus show and making me like a moody, temperamental heroine to whom I normally wouldn’t give a second thought.
