Tempest Rising is Nicole Peeler’s debut novel. I had been eagerly anticipating it ever since discovering Nicole was a part of the League of Reluctant Adults. I have enjoyed all the works by those authors thus far, so I knew I would not be disappointed by yet another “new” author. And I was not. Tempest Rising was different from any other urban fantasy/paranormal work I have read up until this point. It is almost like it is a cross between Laurell K. Hamilton’s Meredith Gentry series and, as another reviewer said, Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse series.

Jane does not realize who she is or what her roots are until it almost cannot be avoided when she finds a dead body in her town’s whirlpool. Beings which she had previously believed were myths have to show her the way. Jane is innocent and naive, just trying to blend into the background of her little town, until she is forced by her supernatural friends to the forefront. However, she discovers after all these years that she is not necessarily crazy and has found a world that she can blend in with.

She forms a relationship with a vampire, Ryu, who takes her to the court of the supernatural world, which is full of intrigue. There, the answer to the mystery which they are trying to solve will be found in the most unexpected places.

I think this book took some twists and turns, but parts of it were easy to follow once the road signs pointed the way. I love a good plot that has mystery and intrigue, and Tempest Rising did not dissatisfy me in the least.

I cannot say enough about this book. I was wowed from the very beginning. I am already eagerly anticipating the release of the second book in the series and the first book is just releasing. All I know is that it is entirely too far away for my tastes. I might have to resort to begging to get my hands on an early copy of Tracking the Tempest just to end my misery. If you enjoy trying new authors, then Nicole Peeler needs to make it to the top of your list. Tempest Rising is a fantastic and engaging book that will leave you wanting for more in the end. I recommend not waiting and going out and buying it today.

Book Excerpt: “Living in small town Rockabill, Maine, Jane True always knew she didn’t quite fit in with so-called normal society. During her nightly, clandestine swim in the freezing winter ocean, a grisly find leads Jane to startling revelations about her heritage: she is only half-human.

Now, Jane must enter a world filled with supernatural creatures alternatively terrifying, beautiful, and deadly- all of which perfectly describe her new “friend,” Ryu, a gorgeous and powerful vampire.

It is a world where nothing can be taken for granted: a dog can heal with a lick; spirits bag your groceries; and whatever you do, never-ever-rub the genie’s lamp.”
