Love Triangle—Paranormal Style

Thank you Rachel and everyone for inviting me to BITTEN BY BOOKS!

So what do you all think about love triangles? Do we ever get tired of them? In my October 27th release, Soul Magic, the second Wing Slayer Hunters book, I decided to explore a love triangle—paranormal style.

Sutton West knows he’s close to giving into the curse and going rogue. If that happens, he’ll start killing innocent witches to harvest the power in their blood and lose his soul. Worse, Sutton has touched the blood of a witch, Dr. Carla Fisk, and the memory haunts him. He’s torn between duel hungers; the deep desire for the woman and the dark craving for her witch blood.

Carla is haunted too—by her murdered twin sister. When she discovers that her sister’s soul is trapped in a knife, she goes to Sutton for help in finding the knife so she can free Keri’s soul to go onto Summerland.

Together as they battle a dangerous psychic, Sutton and Carla discover that Keri’s twin bond with Carla is keeping her soul alive. And they soon realize that one of them is Sutton’s soul mirror—but which one? Carla, the witch who is alive and that he already loves? Or Keri, the dead witch whose soul they are trying to free?

Sutton believes that Carla is his soul mirror, and like alpha men all over Romance Land, he goes after what he wants. But what if he’s wrong?

Carla is deeply conflicted, torn between the twin sister she has loved since their conception, and a newfound love for a man who might not belong to her.

Meanwhile, Keri is reaching out to them both of them as she struggles to help them defeat the psychic and keep her soul alive.

If Sutton and Carla make the wrong choice in this love triangle, the cost is their mortal lives and immortal souls.

Soul Magic is an emotional story that tests the limits of love, magic and sacrifice. This is what I love about writing paranormal, we can take plots that have been around since dirt was young, and add a fresh new twist!

So do you enjoy experiencing along with the characters the anxiety, choices and consequences of a love triangle in a book?

Hi Jennifer!!! Thanks for stopping by…:) I was wondering, who are some of your favorite authors? Plus, what witchy magic were you looking for? I could use some domestic magic to clean the kitchen. :)

Soul Magic sounds AWESOME! I have to admit, I have not read your work but I am definately going to hit the books store tonight and make my purchase.
What made you come up with the idea to have Carla’s sisters soul trapped in a knife?
    That is an fantastic idea.
I have completed step 3 (will come back and loop it), step 4, and working on step 5.

    Thanks,

I love the idea of a love triangle between two women and a man instead of the usual two men and a woman. I think it makes for a fresh and original story.

    Keep up the good work!

Heather C, It’s a pleasure to be here! I love so many authors…Kresley Cole, Nalini Singh, Lori Foster are just a few that sprang into my head.

When I was a kid I wanted magic to deal with my two older brothers! Later, I wanted magic for all kinds of things…and cleaning the house would be one of them :-)

Hi, Jen. Like the crazed fan I am, I’m stalking you. LOL! *wink* That’s an inside joke, folks.

I already own both books so I’m not entering the contest. I’ve also devoured both books, and have spread the word about both books. Repeatedly. Ladies? READ THESE BOOKS! Jen is an amazing writer who has created some wonderful characters and a mythology that is fresh and tantalizing. Her Wing Slayers are all Alpha with a capital A and yet tender and compassionate. She proves honor and sexy work well together. Her heroines are feisty, determined, yet vulnerable. And no, she isn’t paying me to say these things. Jen is one of those rare authors who can make me cry on one page and laugh out loud (literally) a few pages later.

Good luck to all of you. If you don’t win, run, do not walk, to buy these book!

I RSVPd yesterday and added Jennifer as a friend on Facebook.

I like the idea of love triangles as long as they get resolved! Some series drag it out way too long. I definitely like your paranormal spin on the love triangle though - lots more at stake then just a broken heart!

Linda AK, you were told that? So cool! I have also written mysteries and romance (under Jennifer Apodaca). I’m willing to try writing most anything, but maybe a suspense. I also LOVE Women in Jeopardy stories (and yeah, I watch Lifetime when I get the chance!)

  22. Comment by Jen Lyon — November 4, 2009 @ 1:30 pm

Fallon, what draw people to paranormal? GREAT QUESTION! Everyone is different but for me,it’s the battle between good and evil mixed with magic or supernatural forces. There seems to be so much more at stake in paranormal, and the hero/heroines get added “powers” to fight the evil.

Good wins but there’s usually a cost, and I like that too.

Soul Mate sounds like an exciting book and I can’t wait to read it. I’m not into threesomes but this one sounds good. Is it hard to come up with ideas for a series? I mean you have to be able to connect them right? Do you have trouble keeping your facts straight from one book to the next in a series? Do you make them more of a stand alone even thought they are part of a series?

Kim Fetzer, research? It depends. I do quite a bit, but I tend to do it as I need it. For SOUL MAGIC, I researched identical twin and the twin bond (it’s pretty amazing), some genetics and a bit about nature vs nurture. Let’s see, I did some terrain research, and I also tried to get a feel for what many believe the Astral Plane is. I also did some computer research…just whatever the story calls for.

Rachel (Parajunkee), Keeping track isn’t all that easy! I have a notebook that I try to update (cough cough…like I’m a book behind there) but much of it is in my head. I often have to go back through books and double check certain things. For the most part, however, because I work in the world of witches and wing slayer hunter so much, I just know the world.

Diana Owen-Emerson, glad you liked BLOOD MAGIC! For your questions:
“Is there any hope in saving a demon witch, making her good?” I don’t think so, not if she’s fully demon. I address that a bit in the 3rd book BLIND MAGIC (no release date yet)

“Could a Wing Slayer find that a demon witch is his soul mirror?” Absolutely it could happen.

    Great questions!

Cassandra M, my top three authors? Oh wow! I don’t think I could pick three! Years ago, my all time favorite was Julie Garwood back when she was writing her Scot historicals. I don’t think I could pick three now! Although I’m a big Kresley Cole fangirl if that helps. Oh and when JR Ward came out with Dark Lover, I fell hard for her. And then Nalini Singh…love her books! Oh and Maureen Child. Laura Wright, Kate Carlisle and I could just go on and on!

See? I’nm out of control when it comes to books and authors!

“In reading the above, I am left wondering why or what in your past led you to want to become a witch?” Partly because I fell in love with reruns of BEWITCHED. Partly because the little boy down the street accidentally shot and killed his friend. It was a horrible tragedy, and I was so young I literally began to make up stories where I could use magic to control situations like that. Dreaming of being a witch with magical powers helped me cope.

“Also, do you do a lot of research on real life witchcraft and Wicca through personal interviews and published witchcraft books?” Ah another great question. I’ve been researching witches for a long time. I have a few books on it, including the phenomenon of witch hysteria (witch hunts). I also research Wicca, probably as much out of curiosity as anything else. I read up on a lot of different things, including Yoga, to gain insight into “powers.” Then I worked to create my own world :-)

Oh and I haven’t personally interview a witch but I’ve read many written interviews.

Belinda Wolf-Whitaker, hi! To answer your questions:

“Is it hard to come up with ideas for a series?” It depends, this series is something I wanted to write for a long time. I had the idea, but the hard part was doing all the world-building.

“I mean you have to be able to connect them right?” Yes. And I do that by creating the group of men bonded by fighting against the same curse and struggling to do the right thing–protect innocent earth witches.

“Do you have trouble keeping your facts straight from one book to the next in a series?” Sometimes. I keep a notebook, and I often double check in previous books.

“Do you make them more of a stand alone even thought they are part of a series?” I try to because I am notorious for reading series books out of order. But, of course, it’s probably best to read them in order.

I do like a love triangle, even though they drive me crazy. There are always different reasons that the people are right for eachother. Since I read LKH, the Twilight saga and Kim Harrison’s Hollows series (think Rachel, Ivy and Kisten, in a sense), there must be something there that feeds my need for tragic romance. So what happens when the middle person finally chooses just one? Do you have to stop writing or create another conflict? How do you resolve your love triangles?

Thank you for coming here today. :)

I grew up watching “Bewtiched,” so I’m a fellow fan.

I can enjoy love triangles if they’re well done, but I usually pick a favorite before the character does! Ha! One of my favorites was the Buffy/Angel/Spike triangle, but I’m definitely an Angel girl. :)

Jennifer, I think the idea of this particular love triangle is VERY interesting! Usually, it’s between one woman and two men (because really, wouldn’t that just be great?) but I like the idea of it being between two women and the one man. Especially since the man’s still super conflicted and the two women genuinely love one another - it would be much less fun if the two women were catty to one another… unless they are. :)

Here’s my question: when thinking on the love triangle motif, have you ever been tempted to let both contestants win?

For the contest: I posted information on this wonderful chat on my blog (http://elisajankowski.blogspot.com), which auto-feeds onto my facebook account as a note (www.facebook.com/elisa.llewellyn.jankowski), friend request coming in to Jennifer as we speak, I voted in the poll of the week AND I participated in the Halloween Hangover contest already this week! Biki, one series that I love is JD Robb’s “in death” series, and I read those out of order. I’ve read JR Ward’s Black Dagger brotherhood series in order, and I think that helps because the world building is cumulative.

On my series, I think you can read SOUL MAGIC first, but I’d recommend BLOOD MAGIC because it really introduces you to the world.

Sharon K, your questions is which was my hardest book and why? The ALL feel like the hardest when I’m writing them! BLOOD MAGIC went through numerous revisions, so in sheer volume, that one was a killer but I loved every minute of it.

SOUL MAGIC was hard because Sutton is stubborn.I mean it, he knew what he wanted to he didn’t give a crap about rules or anything. Keeping him under control was a tough job!

Deana H, your question is what sets my books apart from others in the genre? Great question. I’m sure I have the answer…I just needed to tell this story, to explore theses characters and their world!

Here’s what I will say…I get a fair amount of mail from witches and practitioners of the craft that tell me I got it right. So I think I’m able to tap into something magical :-) And it’s really cool, because I’m not a witch…I just wish I was! I’m equally sure there are others out there who would say I got it wrong, but they are just too gracious to tell me so!

Love triangles are better read than lead. Since they tend to be overdone, it’s better when there’s a new twist introduced to make it a little fresher. Yours sounds creative, Jennifer. Thanks for being at BBB today.

elisabethb, hi and your question is: “when thinking on the love triangle motif, have you ever been tempted to let both contestants win?” LOLOL! I love that question! It hadn’t crossed my mind, but hey, it’s fiction so why not! But in this series, I wouldn’t do that :-) Still what a fun question!

Hi, thanks for taking the time to answer our questions.

When writing love triangles, is hard to not favor 1 person over the other. I know as a reader, I often find myself switching sides.

Donna S, hi! And to answer your questions:

“What made you choose witches? Whats the appeal to you?” I really loved the idea of women having magic, and men supporting that with the physical strength. There’s something really sexy about that to me.

“Do your books included other paranormal creatures or will they?” The world includes gods and demons, but so far, no other paranormal creatures. I don’t foresee creatures like vampires in this particular series, but then, never say never!

piscesgirl, thank you! I’m so happy you enjoyed Blood Magic! My biggest influence are the romance writers that came before me. I was also influenced by Dean Koontz and Stephen King…which is probably a strange mixture :-)

Stories come naturally to me, but I’ve had to work to learn the craft of writing.

Dina S. We turned out formal dining room into an office, where I have a huge oak desk with bookshelves. That’s where I usually like to write because everything I need is right there.

For brainstorming, any place away from my desk works best. Not sure why that it is.

darchole, oh I read THE HOST by Stephanie Meyer! But I think she went a whole different direction than SOUL MAGIC. For you question:

“Do you ever change what you’re writing because someone else has written something similar?” Only at the initial stage of development when my publisher and I are talking about the idea. But the reality is that each author will put their own unique spin on an idea, and that’s (hopefully) what will make it fresh.

Lesley Cheah, hi! To answer your questions:

“What is the hardest scenes for you to write e.g. action scenes, love scenes, etc and why?” Probably internal scenes that define the hero or heroines deepest fears and conflicts. Those tend to be painful.

“Has it always been this way for you?” Yep, because I have to expose a little of my own fears in order to understand the characters.

“Also, what do you do to overcome it?” Avoid them until I have to sit down and force myself to explore it. Or sometimes, they sneak up on me which is super cool and then they aren’t so hard!

stacey smith, hi there! You asked about two different names. Sometimes, although I’m not actively publishing under my other name, Apodaca, at this second that makes it easier. Sometimes it’s just funny. I was making reservations for dinner the other night and when they asked my name, I blanked for a second, trying to remember if this was work or “real life.” I know I’m tired when I do stuff like that!

But it’s a challenge to build the new name too.
