Daily Book Chat and Contest

Posted under Book Discussions, Chat, Contests, Site News by Site Hostess on Monday 2 November 2009 at 3:16 am
*****

The contest portion of this event is over. :)  The winner is Vicky. Vicky please email me at racoo.smith at gmail.com (no spaces) with your name and address so we can send your swag out. ;)

Go-o-o-o-o-o-o-d morning, READERS (in my best Adrian Cronauer voice)!! “Hey, is it a little too early for being that loud? Hey, too late! It’s 0600. What’s the O stand for? “Oh my God, it’s early!” Speaking of early, how about that Cro-Magnon Marty Drywitz. Thank you Marty for “Silky-smooth sound.” Make me sound like Peggy Lee…”

Uh…well okay then.  I have been thinking things over and really LOVE some of the things we do here at BBB. One thing I love is just chatting amongst ourselves at the different events and what not. So, I thought to myself…”self, we should do this everyday!”

So, lets talk about books! We can pick a new book everyday. I will start us out for today.
Friday Night Bites. Who read it and what did you think of the book? You can also talk about book one Some Girls Bite if you haven’t read book 2.

What are your favorite parts, characters, where do you see the series going? Talk amongst yourselves. If you are going to post major spoiler, be sure to post this first in your comment. **SPOILER** then hit the enter key six or seven times. That way others can avoid them if they want. Also be sure to list and figure out which book you want to talk about tomorrow.

For the contest, one lucky winner will win a bag of author swag, open to readers worldwide. All you need to do to enter is.

I always get excited about finding good authors and new books to read. If I like the way an author writes I usualy stick with them and try to read everything they have written and read what they will write. It’s hard cause there’s a lot of authors I end up forgetting but figure them out over time. I really need to make a list.

I love the idea of a book a day. Can you get us a list of the books for which days? That way we can be better prepared- Hell, in most instances if I’ve got the book I’d be willing to read it right away. You could have us suggest some books too.

  16. Comment by Rachel from Bitten by Books — November 2, 2009 @ 10:42 am

If you haven’t read these books GO GET THEM. Even if you get them from the library.

It is an awesome Urban Fantasy series with just enough sexual tension to make it really good.

Merit is just down to earth and funny as hell. She’s progressing well as a character in her new life, with just enough realism to make it work well.

This is another author who’s work I would skip out of my day job (ha ha a at bbb) to read. The secondary characters are really good too.

  17. Comment by tina i — November 2, 2009 @ 10:46 am

I’m reading Some Girls Bite now and I should be receiving FNB in the mail soon!

I love SGB. The story line is interesting. The tension between Ethan and Merit is hot! The characters are oh so like able. The world created is original.

Does anyone know how many books will be in the series?

  18. Comment by Steph M — November 2, 2009 @ 10:48 am

Tina, I know there will be four books so far. That’s what on her website.

  19. Comment by Steph M — November 2, 2009 @ 10:50 am

I agree Rachel these books are awesome! Definitely read them if you haven’t.

  20. Comment by tina i — November 2, 2009 @ 11:00 am

Steph - thanks. Four books sounds good. I really like this series and will definitely stick with it through all the books.

  22. Comment by Chloe — November 2, 2009 @ 11:06 am

What’s up, y’all? Happy Monday, and thanks for your thoughts.

Here’s a topic of discussion for those of you who’ve read the novels: Ethan Sullivan (Master of Cadogan House) versus Mayor Seth Tate (newly-reelected Mayor of Chicago, and employer of Merit’s beloved grandfather). If it came down to a battle for Merit’s loyalty, who wins?

  24. Comment by Rachel from Bitten by Books — November 2, 2009 @ 11:15 am

ugh Chloe NO FAIR. That is a hard one.

Okay I can see her staying loyal to Ethan. BUT I don’t see her doing anything to jepordize her grandfather by pissing off the mayor. Merit will find a way to kick ass and take names. Save face for both and probably take another hit to her list of shit she doesn’t really want, but will do to keep her promises and the people she loves safe.

    What do you think?

  25. Comment by tina i — November 2, 2009 @ 11:15 am

Chloe - I’m currently reading SGB. Now I really want to read instead of clean the house LOL. My guess would be Grandpa … does that mean Mayor Seth Tate then? Their relationship is to strong to break even for Ethan … that’s my guess, at least at the point were I’m at (3/4 of the way through). Ethan’s hot and all, but she still has so much animosity towards him.

I have not read her books yet but I do hear they are good. I usually do like a good bit of romance in books too (not a must but it sure is fun). So can a good lovestory be promised?

  27. Comment by Chloe — November 2, 2009 @ 11:29 am

Linda - FYI, these are urban fantasy novels with a romantic component. There’s definitely a romance subplot, which is developed as the series unfolds, and romantic tension in each book. That said, there’s no HEA (happily ever after) at the end of each novel as per a traditional romance.

  28. Comment by PhyllisC — November 2, 2009 @ 11:36 am

This series sounds good. I love vampires. I will be putting this on my TBB list for sure. I can’t wait to hear what others think of it.

  29. Comment by Elie N — November 2, 2009 @ 11:53 am

I am afraid to read too many posts (I haven’t finished Friday Night Bites yet). But I can say that I love the series so far.

I don’t really like Ethan but I love the chemistry between them. I understand why he behaves the way he does, but come on, he’s a little full of himself.

Now Morgan, yum. Morgan is more in touch with his humaity. He would make a better long term companion. They have chemistry too, and she is so much more comfortable with him, even if he is a little sneaky.

    will complete all the requirements.

I like this discussion idea! Great job BBB team!

  30. Comment by Rachel from Bitten by Books — November 2, 2009 @ 12:00 pm

It’s okay Elie! No real spoilers yet.

HEY EVERYBODY! Remember to post what book you want to talk about tomorrow too. It can be an older book or a newer one. Totally up to you. :)

    Hi Cheryl!

They are UF, but have a strong romantic undercurrent. No HEA (happily ever after) gauranteed though at the end of each book. If you liked chatting with Marky Henry, and you like snark and good solid humor, you will LOVE these books. I really feel Chloe’s series is one of the best new offerings this year. As you can imagine I read a TON of books.

  69. Comment by Vicky — November 2, 2009 @ 7:19 pm

Some girls bite is an often talked about topic in my circle of friends. I’m eagerly awaiting to get Friday night bites :)

I think if it came down to it, Merit (as she is by the end of book 1) would side with Ethan, even if reluctanctly. If Ethan/Tate are fighting, it will likely come down to human vs. vampire, and Merit is on the undead side of things. I doubt the humans will care much if she’s new or not happy fighting humans.

I think the harder question will be where Mallory’s loyalties would lie. If the Ombud is forced to to take down the house, then that will likely include Catcher. That puts Mallory between her human boyfriend and vampire best friend. Not a position I’d want to find myself in, you know?

The big question I toss around with my reading group is this: what makes Merit decide to pledge to Cadogan house? On page 193, she seems to be undecided still, debating the consequences of not taking the oaths. And yet on page 200, she goes along with “Vampire Rush” with seemingly little reluctance. It feels like (to me) that there’s something missing, some defining moment that convinces her one way or another to make the pledge. All I can guess is that there must be some “off screen” soul searching on her part, but it frustrates me to no end to not see this catalyst.

    What are your thoughts?

OMG! I love her books. I can’t wait for more intaraction between the Head of the Cadogan House and Merit. Waiting for the next book is torture! I like Merit, and I appreciate that she loses but comes back again, stronger, instead when a heroine typically defeats her nemisis. Ethan is yummy, and Jeff is just epiK.

What about Bound to Shadows by Keri Arthur, or Curse the Dawn by Karen Chance?

“The big question I toss around with my reading group is this: what makes Merit decide to pledge to Cadogan house? On page 193, she seems to be undecided still, debating the consequences of not taking the oaths. And yet on page 200, she goes along with “Vampire Rush” with seemingly little reluctance. It feels like (to me) that there’s something missing, some defining moment that convinces her one way or another to make the pledge. Vicky, this is a great point! I didn’t really put that much thought into it. I just felt like she was either giving it the “old college try” or she felt like she really had no choice and just gave it and went with it. Which has been a challenge for her so far. But as she develops through the next book it appears to come more easily to her.

I say we ask CHLOE! where did she go! ha, I bet she’s writing more Merit books. lol

I enjoy the sexual tension for Merit (not in a weird way thank you very much) but it isn’t really the reason I love the books. I love the story line and the real world kind of take on everything. The humor and action. It is like an awesome TV show but better, because there is so much more rich detail that our minds can capture and re-create as we read it.

If you guys / ladies have these in your TBR piles, move them to the TOP, they are a quick read and I think you will really like them.

    Hey Aori!

I would love to talk about Bound To Shadows tomorrow. Is anybody else up to speed on it? It just came out so I never know who has gotten it and actually read it. LOL

I haven’t read any of Karen’s books, but I am glad to put it up as the book tomorrow if others have. I *think* I may have them here at the house somewhere. But they are not unpacked. lol

    1. I’m horribly addicted to Ilona Andrew’s Kate Daniels series. I’ve been re-reading the books and I can’t believe the next book isn’t until the middle of next year. When I tried to find another series, I’m afraid to start and be hooked b/c then I have to wait for a new series. It’s funny, I was looking for a new series to start but then I was afraid to start it because I knew I’d hate on the author because I have to wait for a new book >_<

Can’t contribute to the discussion since I haven’t gotten around reading this series yet. I’d like to, mostly because a graduate student heroine sounds interesting.
