Release Party, Chat and Contest with Author Jennifer Rardin
You’re here! That is sew kewl! I was trying to think of a jingle to sing to both welcome you to my mega-awesome Bitten by Books Virtual Launch Party and celebrate the Coming Out Day for the sixth Jaz Parks adventure. But all I could come up with was Ba-ba-ba Ba-ba-Bite Marks, which makes me think of sheep. Wearing little helmets while they crouch behind large boulders hoping the wolves don’t, well, you know. And do we really wanna go there today? Naw, I didn’t think so.
Especially since wolves don’t have a starring role in Bite Marks. It’s more about gnomes. No, not the cute little red-hatted statues who crouch in your garden pretending to sniff your roses while robins perch on their heads and poop down their backs. These are fanatical, cave-dwelling cannibals who’ve plotted to destroy an integral part of NASA’s space-gazing capabilities—the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex, located just outside of Australia’s capital.
In the whole, wide world, it seems that only Jaz Parks and the vampire, Vayl, can address the gnome threat properly. (That’s CIA-speak for kill the bad guys.) Okay, they are America’s top assassins. And, no, they’ve never failed a mission. But, come on. They were in the middle of a hot, hot, (STEAMY!) vacation! So not fair.
Especially since Jaz is having some trouble managing her inner dialogue. The voices in her head have never been a big deal before. Because they’re all facets of her own personality. Wise Granny May. Practical Librarian. Wicked Bimbo. But this new voice isn’t like the others. It won’t shut up. And it keeps needling Jaz, pushing her toward isolation. Which is why she quickly realizes—it’s coming from something other.
Here’s the best part . . . you won’t have long to wait for the rest of the story, because Bite Marks officially releases on Thursday, October 29th! And since my jingle was such a dud, how about I throw in some ubercool prizes to give you even more cause to celebrate? Here’s what you could win!
A $100 Gift Certificate to Amazon.com

Hey Jennifer!! Love the series!! I was just wondering how many books do you have planned for the series?
I RSVPed!
Oh and I signed up for her newsletter before, but there was never an email recognizing it.
Jennifer, what is your favorite book so far in the series and why?
I RSVPed.
Back again! Have you traveled to the places you write avout or do you just do lots of research? And if it’s research, how do you create teh atmosphere so well? I feel like I’m really at these places even though I’ve never been to them!
This series is new to me. The Jaz Parks’ covers are lovely. They are simple but very eye catching. I can’t wait to pick up a copy and read. Will they eventually be sold in a box set?

I commented above (#5) forgot to add that I RSVPd.
These are such great books. Love the series Jennifer - and the UK covers do rock. To follow up the last question, I was wondering that also. Oh and also, when you get involved in a long series do you find that it gets harder to write???

Love your books. Just picked up Bite Marks. 1 question. How do you pronounce Vayl?
Welcome (back) to BBB!!!
I sensed some foreshadowing in Bite Marks when Cassandra first “sees” Cole and the demon (I can’t remember her name because I’m a bad, bad reader. Is it Kyphas?). Will she be around in the next book to cause trouble for the bubble-smacking cutie?

Welcome Ms. Rardin and thanks for stopping by.
The question I wanted to ask you is this, do you have any routines that you go through before you sit down and start writing? Like wear a certain pair of earrings or necklace, or rub a lucky charm, ect…
Thanks!

Hi Jennifer! Book 1 was recommended to me by a bookstore employee. You have no idea how happy I am that she had read your first book. I have finished all 6 now and absolutely love them. Is there any way we can convince you to write more than 8 in the series? Pleeeeeeeeeease??
I RSVP’d as well.
Hi Jennifer!
I love your books and enjoy discussing them with book groups on Shelfari and introducing them to new readers. I also really appreciate the exchanges we fan have with you on Facebook and on your blog- it has made me an even bigger fan. Here are my questions:
You polled recently about which character we readers would like to learn more about and I *think* Bergman won. However, I voted for the mysterious man Jaz met in Bitten to Death, Azoz? (Oh, I know that’s not his name! How embarrassing!) Will we learn more about him? He seemed fascinating!!
Also, do you have a release date for Shadowstruck yet? What it is about?
Thirdly, what did you settle on for your signings companion? Trained animal or untrained toddler borrow from a fan? (I need to know so I can get a vampire costume for my kid! ;-))
Thank you!
(the rest of the steps are done! Thanks BBB!)
Jen, I”ve talked to you before but I wanna know what is your muse? What keeps you writing and helps you get back into the groove when you are stuck?
Keep those fab. books coming! ~BrittanyG

I have had your books recommended to me & I have them high on my list.
I am also curious as to the YA Shadowstruck that someone already mentioned.
Is there a certain band/music you think fits your series?
Another question I like asking people - is there any certain place that you go to find solace/ a fave spot that is comforting to you?
Congrats on the Release Date!!
Hi Jennifer
I haven’t had the pleasure of reading any of your books but I will have to try and find them this weekend. I want to see what happens between the three siblings as well as between Jaz and Vayl. How do you come up with your ideas for the books you write? Do you ever read something and think man that’s just like something I wrote? I read a lot and there are times it seems different authors have the same thought or idea but maybe with a different twist. Do you ever get writers block? If so what do you do to get writing again? Can’t wait to get some of your books, thanks for being here today and chatting with us.
I have been waiting for the 29th for a very long time. Finally, its here!
Hi Jennifer! I am looking forward to this series!
My question is: how did you come up with the different facets of Jaz’s personality and the voices within? Are they based on individuals you have met?
Hey!

Voted in poll and particiapted in My Bloody Vampire contest. Jennifer’s books sound great. Adding to my TBR pile……

I love your pink laptop.
These gnomes kinda sound like a more evil version of the warrior redhats from Laurell’s books. I like it when something that has been cuteified is actually not, like fairies.
I wrote a partial story about myself as personality pieces (like actual people walking around), so I like that similarity with her voices being the same way.
Which personality are you most often in real life, if you have many facets?
I have wanted to read these books but haven’t had the chance yet. Would you say there’s more romance or more action? (I like both.)
Did 4 (sent Facebook friend request), 5 and 7 (newsletter and Facebook).
I can’t wait until the book appears on my kindle in the morning! I’ve had it pre-ordered since Amazon made the kindle edition avaialable.

Hi Jennifer. Thanks so much for joining us here today. Congrats on the new release.
What genres do you read in for fun?
Hi, Jennifer! Thank you for being so awesome and doing what you do so very well. My questions are:
Since Jaz is definitely taken, will Cole ever find his soul mate? I feel so sorry for the poor guy.
And what do you think the gang would do if they weren’t CIA agents?

Heyya Jennifer! I’ve anxiously been awaiting this book and am delighted the day is nearly upon us. In fact i’ll be hitting the bookstore tonight just to see if there are any advance copies out there waiting for my greedy self.
The series is wonderfully written, highly original and completely addictive.
Anyhoo - just popping by to wave hi and show my support and excitement.
hugs, air kisses and all that -

2. Hi Jennifer! I liked your jingle. hee hee hee
What made you decide that gnomes were nasty little cannibals? I’ve seen lots of representations but this is a first. I can see where it comes from, some of those garden gnomes look pretty murderous.

Hello Jennifer, Just read the 1st Jaz book with my bookclub - Bloodlust. Really enjoyed it and will be reading the rest. I am also looking forward to meeting you with the bookclub next month in Tennessee.
Jennifer,
I haven’t had the pleasure of reading any of your books yet, but I think that might change. Jaz sounds kick ass! And the series doesn’t sound half bad either.
Quick question: Any advice for an aspiring writer, maybe a tip or two on editing (which is where I seem to have most of my trouble)?

Hi Jennifer!
Cannot wait for bite marks to appear through the letter box, due to postal strike that may be a while though :(, may have to strangle the postman!
As lots of the questions i wanted to ask have already appeared, i’m gonna go with a random one! In honour of Halloween, what is your favourite horror film? Wish i could be in america for this holiday, you guys always seem to have much bigger fancy dressed fun!
It would be amazing to win signed copies of your books, not simply because i lent mine to a friend and never got them back
but they really are the best books i’ve read in years!

Hi to Jennifer,
I am new to your work and after reading over your website, I was wondering what inspires you to write? Would you consider yourself to have a great imagination? I know that my imagination is very well developed~ just ask my husband or daughter! It was interesting reading your posts, especially “You Say Potato, I Say Spud.” Congratulations on your new release. As an aside, my favorite gnome is Carl from the science fiction series “Special Unit 2.” Thanks Jennifer and Rachel.
Congrats on Release Day! I love the series!

Question hmmm. What would be your ideal holiday? Where would it be and what would you do?
Hiya Jennifer,
Happy book birthday! Don’t be fooled by those red-hatted little garden gnomes. I think they’re up to no good when people aren’t looking.
Two questions. 1)How many books are planned for the Jaz Parks series? 2)I’m a big fan of stationery. If Jaz were to use a pen as a weapon, what pen would she choose?

Hey Jessica S.! Thanks so much! I’ve just finished book seven, “Bitten in Two.” And then I’m contracted to do one more book in the series. After that I’ll be taking a break to start a new series. Whether that break will be permanent or not is still up in the air. I kinda hope not, but that’s really up to Jazfans!
Hey, Amber Y! So far my favorite book is the one I just finished, “Bitten in Two.” That’s typical for me, though. I usually feel fondest of my most recent book, because I think it’s the best one I’ve done so far. Which is all part of my evil masterplan to take over your home libraries, mwahahahahaha!
That’s great to hear, Jessica! I’ve only been to Miami, which is the site of “Once Bitten, Twice Shy.” So, yeah, tons of research. I am hoping to do some on-site experiences for my next series though. I was getting all excited about visiting Brazil…then I watched “Turistas.” Gak!
I’m happy to hear you like the covers, tina. I’m way proud of them too, despite the fact that I had no artistic input on them whatsoever! Just impressed by the skills our Orbit artists bring to the table! As far as selling Jaz’s adventures in a boxed set, I’m not sure what Orbit’s plans are in that arena. I’ll be sure to send the word out, though, as soon as I hear. Thanks for asking!
Hi Rachel! I think what gets tougher for me as the series rolls along is keeping track of all the important details that I’ve mentioned along the way. I don’t write every little thing down on my notecards, and sometimes it amazes me what I’ll refer back to. What I love about being able to stay with a set of characters like these is that I get to show some real growth, and not just among the major players.
Hi, donna, I hope you enjoy it! You pronounce Vayl with a long “a,” as in, “The truth is veiled.”
Hi, Jackie, it’s awesome to be here! Let’s just say Kyphas is too interesting to leave “down under.”
Hi Dana! That warms the cockles of my heart (not sure what they are, but that word just cracks me up). Thanks for picking up the books!!
Hey, Rebecca. Er, I am glancing furtively around the room before I admit this. But since I’m fairly certain none of my family members follow me around the Internet I will admit to you that I have a pink windup robot toy on my desk. Her name is Delilah.2. And every morning before I sit down to write I wind her up and say, “What kind of day are we gonna have, Delilah.2?” At which point I put her down on the desk and she boogies her little pink robot hips and arms until she’s completely unwound. Yup, that’s my routine. Don’t tell anyone you know named Rardin.
Thanks for having me, Sharon! The hardest book for me to write was “Bitten to Death,” because I was writing during my daughter’s senior year, and we were both having massive separation pangs. So, lots of emotional stuff to deal with on a personal level while trying to stay on-task with a story that was uberhard for me to get my head around. Because, though I love vampires, their inner logic can be mystifying. And this book was all about vampires. Also, because vampire lore is incredibly well known and, some would say, overdone, I felt like I had to come up with something unique and fascinating. It was a tall order and one that stressed me from beginning to end. I am, however, proud of the result.
Hi Cyd! I’m glad you like the gadgets. I have a fondness for cool inventions, so they were really a bit of selfishness on my part. As far as “Shadowstruck” goes, that’s my YA book, which I just finished last Sunday. Yay! I actually began writing it as soon as I finished and started trying to find an agent for “Once Bitten, Twice Shy” in 2005. Yeah, it’s been a while. I’ve written six other books in the meantime and taken “Shadowstruck” through three major rewrites itself. But it’s done. It’s an urban fantasy about a 15-year-old misfit named Holmes whose sister is kidnapped by a Shadowman, and how Holmes fights to get her back.
Thanks, Becky! I’m always up for playtime, so I’m having a blast today! What I’d tell you about the Jaz Parks series is that I can almost guarantee you’re going to find something, and someone, to love. It offers romance, thrills, mystery, adventure, horror, and some of the most lovable characters you’d ever hope to have racing around inside your head!
Hi Linda AK! I certainly do! A couple of years ago my family and I went to New York and I was able to meet the man who helped create the covers for the first five books in the series. He was actually touched that I’d framed them and put them on my walls. But I do see them as beautiful pieces of art, expressing both the feel of the stories and the excitement you, as a reader, should experience as you flip through page after page of adventure. He has since moved on, and Lauren Panepinto has become the Creative Director of Orbit Books. She, along with a select team of wonderful individuals from my imprint, is responsible for the incredible “Bite Marks,” cover. And I truly couldn’t be prouder that my name is printed across the bottom. Too. Cool. (Lauren did an amazing two-part piece on making an urban fantasy cover using “Bite Marks” as her template. If you’re interested in reading part 1, here’s the link:
http://www.orbitbooks.net/2009/01/28/the-making-of-an-urban-fantasy-cover-part-i/
(There was a part two, but I can’t find it anymore…sorry.)
Aw, that’s so cool, Lisa! I hope you enjoy it!
Hi, Jennifer! My favorite part of writing these books comes when I’m so deep in the story that everything around me disappears and the words are flowing so fast from my brain that my fingers can barely keep up. There’s a certain kind of immersion into character and plot that has to take place in order for this to happen, and it doesn’t occur on a daily, or sometimes even weekly basis. But when it does, it’s the closest I’ve ever been to real magic.
Thanks so much, Misty! Sales are going great so far, thanks to wonderful fans like you! I guess I got into this genre because I like living a normal life, but my entertainment needs to be just the opposite. I want it to take off like a rocket and spin me into something completely unique and mind-blowing. I love it when an author makes my eyes go wide or give me an are-you-kidding-me? moment. And since that’s what I want to read, naturally that’s what I’m into writing as well.
Yeah, Susan. The vampire, Vayl, appears in every book. They also collect a “crew” along the way. These characters don’t appear in every book, but they do come and go often enough that you begin to know and love them. They are Cole, who is a Supernatural P.I. that they meet in the first book. Bergman, a genius inventor. And the psychic, Cassandra.
LMAO, Heather! Vegas sheep it is!! As far as the hardest part of writing “Once Bitten, Twice Shy,” I would say it was disciplining myself to sit down to the story every day. Because I was working part-time during that period, raising kids, taking care of home, etc. I mean, you can let a lot distract you and be totally justified in that. So the toughest part of the writing was sticking with it.
Yes, Raelena, I have a new urban fantasy series ready to present to my editor as soon as I’ve finished book eight. It’s pretty dern awesome, if I may say so myself. I kinda can’t wait to start it! (And I just felt a little disloyal saying that. Aargh! These characters really do grow on you!)
G’day, Valorie! It’s getting tougher to pull the cool mechanics out of my soooo nonmechanical mind, I will admit! I do keep track of the new stuff the military will admit to having (and testing) and that has inspired a few of my ideas. But generally I’ll consider what an assassin needs to make her work better, and that’s what Bergman will have to come up with. My mind is already stewing over what to do for book eight. I dunno if I can top the “Bite Marks” dealio, but I’ll try!
Thanks, chris, I love being on TBR lists! Beyond the ritual I mentioned above, I don’t really do anything else strange. Because, let’s be real, that’s pretty weird all by itself! My least favorite genre is probably…nope, couldn’t think of one. They all have appealing factors. However, I’m less likely to pick up and read a historical romance because of all the fan-waving and tittering. Gag.
Great to see you here, Eimear! WTH with your bookseller? Do I need to come over there and offer bribes? I make great chocolate chip cookies! As far as covering that gorgeous hunka dark-haired, emerald-eyed manflesh in glitter, uh…what were we talking about?
That’s definitely the idea, Tamara. I got interested in the paranormal really young. As in, I can’t even remember. Probably the first time I ever heard a fairy tale that involved magic dust or pixies, yeah, I was hooked.
Hi Amber! I suppose a little bit of Jaz is in me. The parts that keep her glued to family and allow her to love despite the hells she’s been through. And I’ve given her some of my strengths, but a lot has just grown from who she is as the granddaughter of a powerful woman named May who always let her know exactly what she was capable of, the daughter of a Marine who expected results dammit, a girl who grew up in a world filled with monsters, a young woman whose first job turned out to involve killing vampires. And all that seems kind of intense, which it is, but she still had friends throughout her journey who taught her how to laugh–which is, I think, the main reason she survived.
Hi fallon! Yeah, actually I admire Charlaine Harris quite a bit. I especially like her Sookie Stackhouse novels, but I’ve sampled her other series’ as well. She read “Another One Bites the Dust” and gave me a terrific quote for it (at least the US verison, I don’t know if they used it on the UK cover or not), despite the fact that she was horrifically busy. I also got wonderful quotes from Patricia Briggs and Keri Arthur, whose works I admire. Authors don’t have to do that, so I was pretty stoked about those ladies.
Hi Barbara, that’s great to hear. Hope I answered it well enough for you above.
Wow, June, that’s amazing! I’m easily convinced, believe me. It’s more up to the publisher, and the way they’re convinced is by sales. So just keep telling your friends you like the series. Eventually the good word gets out and, voila! More Jaz for us all!
LMAO, Caroline! My signing companion will be my untrained hubby for the most part, although I may be bringing a friend to Aurora with me instead since he has a previous commitment that day! All vamps welcome, by golly! I’m not sure who you’re talking about in “Bitten to Death.” If you think of his name, let me know on the website, okay? We can talk more then. As far as “Shadowstruck” is concerned, I’m afraid I can’t say much more about it since it’s currently in the hands of my agent, who had only begun to market it. I’ll let you know more as soon as I do!
I’m learning, Brittany, that my muse is relaxation. When I’m stressed and/or tense, it’s hard for me to write. I can, will, and do write under those circumstances. Because it’s a job, like any other, and you can’t slack off just because you’re having a bad day. But knowing that I work better when I’m chilled gives me the chance to work my atmosphere to my advantage. I’m all about the music. Good lighting. Pretty surroundings. If I’m way stuck I’ll take a walk or tend my garden–but the whole time I’m away from the laptop my mind is still on story. So far those tactics have worked for me. I’m lucky, though. Because the main ingredient, I think, in my success is the fact that I’m married to an amazingly supportive and loving man who believes in me and wants me to be successful. I’ve only made a few brilliant decisions in my life. Marrying him was one of them.
Hi Bridget! I might consider trading places with my younger self, only because occasionally I get frustrated that I’m finally gaining some wisdom but I’m too damn old to get any good out of it! But no, to be honest, I’m happy right where I am.
How cool, Steph! Can’t wait to meet you in person! Yeah, now that I’ve finished “Shadowstruck,” I’m taking a few days off of novel writing to do some blogging, etc. Then I’ll be starting book eight in the Jaz Parks series which–gulp–has no title. Depending on how fast “Shadowstruck” sells, I might either start its sequel at the same time, or begin work on a musical comedy I’ve been cooking up in my silly cells (that’s the goofy part of my brain–takes up about three-fourths of my actual skull space) for about two years now.
Hey, Medievalgrrl! I wasn’t actually going to deal with gnomes. I had a native Australian beastie all picked out–and then I had to abandon it because the name was just too cutsie for me (would you be terrified by a Bunyip?) and the place where it usually lived didn’t jive with anything America would have a stake in. Enter the rewrite. In which we have nasty gnomes and NASA. I like it too. But I’m kinda curious how the scientists down there feel. Hoping to hear from one of them any day now!
Thanks so much, Libby! As far as feel goes, I find that The Killers (http://www.thekillersmusic.com/) seems to fit my books the best, although when I literally reference music inside the story, you’ll find mainly classic rock tunes.
Hi Belinda, thanks for considering the series! The ideas for my books are always based around the fact that Jaz and Vayl are CIA assassins, so their missions must center upon protecting the national security of the US. I try to avoid urban fantasy now for that very reason, so if you read something that’s similar to mine, I can tell you honestly that it’s purely coincidence. I don’t really call it block, but I do occasionally write myself into a corner. That’s not always a bad thing, because the process of thinking my way out of there usually leads to the kinds of unpredictable plot turns that readers enjoy most.
Yay! Thanks for your patience, Alicia!
Hi, Kristi! Well, I figured we all have at least one voice inside our heads that gives us advice, or provides commentary. So with Jaz I just elaborated to show the different facets of that voice by breaking it into different characters. Granny May is loosely based on my Grandma Ryan, who was much sweeter and less inclined to volunteer advice, which saddens me now that she’s gone, because I would love to know what she thought about a variety of issues that come up in my daily life. My grandma did play bridge, but never (as far as I know) with Bob Hope!
Hey, Meghan. Glad to hear it!!
Well, Jessica, I drive my hubby crazy when we play cards because I shuffle, according to him, way too much. I disagree, but I do it because I like the sound. And I like being able to make that bridge and watch the cards arch and then fall back into each other. A simple pleasure. Which I began to think Jaz could turn into something much more. She definitely needed something.
Thanks, Lori!
Thanks for the laptop compliment, R.E.B. I still haven’t tired of the color, which I thought I might after a while. As far as personality facets go, I’m most like Granny May. So now, of course, I have to tell you I’m nearly that old yet! I’d say the romance builds throughout the series. There’s probably always going to be a little more action in my books, but the romance gets more and more attention as the relationship between Jaz and Vayl progresses.
Thanks a ton, Marci! What a great way to wake up to a Thursday!
You’re so kind, Tawania, thank you!
You’ve outed me, Aymee. I’m pretty much a nine-year-old at heart. Except I swear. But only sometimes!
Hi there, Raquel! It really depends on the story, but the last book I wrote (”Bitten in Two”) took me about eight months. That includes the first draft, two rewrites, and a final read-through. I’d say that’s probably a good average.
Hi Denise! Right now I’m big into Naomi Novik who wrote the Temeraire series. I’m also a lifelong fan of Stephen King, Michael Crichton, Ursula K. Le Guin, and the writing team of Weis & Hickman.
I liked your little ditty. Yes, I did:) I’m wondering…do you garden, and if so, do YOU have a cute gnome in your yard?

Hi Jennifer!
I was just curious, but will you be going through all the ‘mystical creatures’ such as unicorns or elves? I love that you’re using gnomes, I definitely think they’ve been ignored, but where did you get the idea for them to have such a dangerous edge?
Voted and rsvp’d. Already friends with BBB and on the mailing list
I love this series! It is not vampire-porn, but has just the right amount of spice to keep it interesting. I can’t wait to get my hands on the new one. I nag my local library to buy each book as they come out, so more people can enjoy the books.
I joined Jennifer’s newsletter today. Also, voted in the polls today.
Go Jennifer!
Hello! Your series is new to me, I’ve seen them in the bookstore but I wanted to start with book one which never seems to be in stock! GAH! I am so anal that way. Do they need to be read in order? My real question is, now that you are several books into your series, is there a character that has died or faded away that you wish now had more of the stage? Or a side character that is a favorite but hasn’t worked into the story as well as you had hoped? Side characters are frequently my favorite parts of a book, so I’m always curious about them.
Hi again,
I’m back with another question, I think it was mentioned in a question above that the Jaz Parks series might be ending at Book #8???? Please say it isn’t so!!!

Hi Jennifer!
Thanks for sharing with us!
I like the choice of gnomes for villains…nice!
I guess my question’s a little weird lol, but I was wondering if you ever feel bad about giving your villains a bad name. I mean, I know they’re not real, but they can seem real, and you’re making gnomes look bad! I have never looked at a bunny the same way since I saw Night of the Lepus. Or do your villains deserve their bad reputation and you’re just telling it like it is?

Love your books!
OMG, did you really say pooping down the gnome’s back? LOL!
And sheep hiding behind the rock…..you are a hoot. If I hadn’t stopped by here and saw that you were a cool butt person I wouldn’t have really wanted to read your book…well I would have cause there was a vamp, but now I want to also because you are a cool butt person.
Thanks,
Tami
Thanks, Linda. They were definitely a fun, funky change for me too!
Hey there, Anna! My dream collaborator would probably be Dave Barry (http://www.davebarry.com/books.html) because I’ve always wanted to work with someone who could make me laugh so hard that I was in danger of blowing snot every thirty seconds! I suppose if I could choose to be someone famous for a few hours, I’d pick Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, because I’d love to know how he crafted his Sherlock Holmes stories.
Hi Carol! I used to gobble up Urban Fantasy like I was starving and they were made of chocolate! But now that I’m a UF author, I avoid that genre and instead read mainly high fantasy, horror, and sci-fi for fun.
Aw, Nicole, fans like you are why I can rock these books! In answer to your question about Cole, let me just say I do believe there’s someone for everyone. And if the gang had to choose a different career path, I think they’d still need the adrenalin rush combined with the feeling of serving a greater cause. Maybe they’d form their own Mount Everest rescue team.
Hi Amanda, hope you’re enjoying the ride! Since I’ve mentioned my fave authors already, I’ll just say that my husband and kids have been the most supportive of my writing. They’re amazing. Not even exaggerating.
Very cool, Lakota! Hugs right back atcha!
I always suspect the cute ones, Mindy! (BTW, did my jingle make you wanna kick up yer heels? Even a little? Didn’t think so.)
So cool, Sandy! I’m looking forward to meeting you. And, I gotta say, your book club has the best name!
Thanks, Lisa, we often talk about how Jaz leaves her bootprints on many asses that she meets along the way! My advice for writers mainly centers around persistence. Just keep plugging away, gaining experience by doing the work. As far as editing goes, as soon as you’ve finished the first draft, your relationship with the piece needs to change. The story has to stop being your baby and start being a marketable product that contains crap (because everything does, even the stuff written by the most brilliant among us) that must be either cut or changed. So read with a critical eye and a constant question–”Does this make sense?” If it doesn’t, you have to work with it until it does.
Hi Beverly, it’s just great to be back! You know, it’s hard to measure a change like that, but I do think more people have found Jaz and me through this site and my other online outlets. That’s incredibly exciting, because I’ve found that Jazfans are warm, funny, witty people with a lot of interesting things to say. And I’m blessed to have them in my writing life!
Oh man, Rena, I am constantly making up stories in my head. It’s a blessing, but also sometimes a curse! I occasionally have to reign myself in and even sternly tell myself, “Okay. Be in this moment, right now, because it’s never happening again.” I don’t even want to know how much of my life I’ve missed because I was following the plot that was unwinding inside my head! As far as plot goes, I do usually know where I’m headed before I write, because I have a complete outline in front of me. And if the story changes radically, I’ll revise the outline before I move on.
Thanks, Jeanette!
Oh, Bea, that’s just da bomb!
Hi Sophie! I know this sounds bizarre, but I’m not really a horror movie fan. At all. Because they give me nightmares. But one of my favorites is Thir13en Ghosts with Tony Shalhoub (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0245674/) who is a genius actor. Best of luck in getting your copy of “Bite Marks” soonest!
Hi Leslie! I suppose the need to write is something so deep-seated I couldn’t explain it properly if I even tried. I just have to write, and often the subjects I’m moved to cover are inspired by either news stories I’ve heard or actual events that take place around me. I don’t know if my imagination is great, but it’s incredibly active. My struggle is to teach it to, at least occasionally, just chill.
Thanks so much, Kathy and renee!
Excellent, Ali! Such an entertaining site!
That’s okay, emmad, I understand. So many wonderful titles to choose from–so little time! My ideal vacation would be a three-week trip to Europe. That would have to include a day at a renovated castle and a day at a big, well-tended garden. Lovely!
LOL, Jacqueline! Right now we’re planning eight books for the Jaz Parks series. And if Jaz were to use a pen as a weapon, she’d go classy and use a Cross Townsend Fountain Pen (http://www.cross.com/catalog/pendetail.aspx?cat_name=Cross+Townsend+Pens&tech=Fountain&MSCSProfile=983BB0CC620F5E6D8FDE26829663AF16DA826AA5C5E3C266C5322C9CC1E71DE415C95EC5F033B1F2A8345360288E233666CC2E54DA38A7F30BD63E5CD3D7315D4ED398C59D626EB83F7D2F52225BA6248A8206977E6B2B58D6C9CDBA829DE46ABD89C286310ADCB40BC6A26726AB5B2C32F8DBEA31A691B279BB4DDD20D5DC2DF1C56F31BA565C1C&id=H656&page=1&index=2)
Excellent question, Paula! Would it help you to know their god, Ufran, lives out there in the cosmos? And he doesn’t appreciate peeping toms?
I’ll see what I can do, Beth!
Thanks a million, wendy. I think fans like you are fantabulous!
I appreciate that, jessica!
Well, Melanie, that’s where having the outline comes in very handy. It keeps me organized and assures that I have something to write about when I sit down at my desk every morning!
Happy Halloween, Deb! I appreciate your support!
Thanks, Terri, I’m pretty psyched about it!
LOL, Raonaid! I definitely want to put them in a place where my husband will travel with me to do the research previous to the writing! He’s already informed me he’s not interested in going to Romania because, “There’s only one road there!” I’m pretty sure I could get him to Canada. Maybe that’ll be their next stop…

I want to win one of these prizes…. the series sounds fantastic and I can’t believe that I havent read them yet…. will make sure that is taken care of asap….
Do you do all your own research or do you have ‘experts’ you consult for your books i.e. guns, tech, CIAese.
I RSVPed and voted.
Glad to hear it, Moonsanity! Yup, I have garden gnomes, but not the red-hats. Mine are more…generic. And therefore, I suspect, less likely to burn the house down!
Biki, I do believe some of the mythical creatures should stay beyond my interference. Like, I’m not sure I could write about elves in such a way that everyone on earth wouldn’t be channeling visions of the LOTR movies. Which, in my mind, is a bad, bad thing when you’re trying to offer readers something completely unique. But I would like to play with some of the lesser knowns. As far as giving gnomes a nasty edge, it just seemed like the right thing to do at the time!
Good for you, Susan! Thanks for supporting the series!
I totally get that, Denise, I like to start with book one myself. I’ll bet your bookseller would be happy to order it in for you. Having said that, yes, the books are written to stand alone, but the characters and relationships do progress as the series moves along. So the most satisfying way to read it would be starting with “Once Bitten, Twice Shy.” I do have a few side characters who I’d love to spotlight more brightly. One is a werewolf. One is a vampire. The third, well, I can’t really talk about him because you haven’t met him yet. I’m getting so frustrated having to ignore their more fascinating traits that I’m considering doing a series of one-offs where each side character is the hero.
What I’ll be doing, Valorie, is ending the current plot arc with book eight. You should have a good idea of where the characters might be heading from there, but I intend to leave myself a wide opening for a series continuation if fans show enough interest.
LOL, Jillian! If you could see those nasty little dudes, they’d be line dancing and singing a high-pitched rendition of Joan Jett’s “Bad Reputation!” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RAQXg0IdfI) So, naw, I don’t feel bad. It was happening all along, you just didn’t realize it!
Thanks, patsy!
What can I say, Tami? We cool butt people have to stick together!
That would be C.S. Lewis, Amy.
Okay, as soon as I answer this I’ll think of somebody else, Alicia, but the character that instantly came to mind was Patsy from “Spamalot.” (http://www.montypythonsspamalot.com/)
Suh-weet! Thanks, Summer!
I’m so glad to hear it, Julia! Big hugs for buying all those books at once! Yowsa!
Totally, fine, Jackie. Pronounce like you wanna–Vayl won’t care!
Totally grooving on your name, Shell the Hockeyvampiress! My go-to snack is peanut butter. In fact, I would like to be buried with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich stuffed in each hand. And also one under each foot, just for the cushy enjoyment. I grew up in a tiny community where nobody else thought or acted like me. So I pretended to be somebody else until I broke out and, while running through the woods wearing little more than a headband and a leather bikini, I met a pack of urban fantasy writers bearing laptops and licorice sticks. The rest, as they say, is history.
Hiya, darchole! I do as much research as I can on my own. But when I come to a question that requires expert knowledge (as in the case of guns, or how a person might go about shutting down the electricity in a six-block radius) I consult people who know a lot more than I do about that stuff.
Hey Jennifer! I was just wondering how many books you were planning on doing on Jaz and Vayl, and I was wondering if you had any ideas in the works while you continue on the Jaz series.
wow! I LOVE your covers!! They are wonderful and totally draw me in!
Hey Jen!
Thanks for coming back at BBB to party! And wow, those are some really great prizes!
I can’t wait to finally have Bite Marks in my hands: I’d like to hang a “nobody home” sign out of my room and just dive into the book - and reappear only when I’ve read it front to back a couple of times, lol. Which is why my Amazon shopping cart is still waiting for the final ok to the purchase. I know. Bad, bad Jazfan. But I’m having some really busy weeks at uni, so I’m waiting to get past all the crap to finally have some time to slow down and savour the book. But oh, I can’t wait anymore, I wanna know what happens!
I’ll try to come by again tomorrow (here’s 11.30 pm). On you go, you rock!

Hey Jennifer! I’m so excited for Bite Marks to come out tomorrow! I still have Barnes and Noble gift cards so I think I know what I’m doing tomorrow afternoon.
I was wondering if you ever have a bad guy so awesome you almost want to let them win. Like, yeah what they’re doing is awful but look at the ingenious way they planned it and arranged everything. I also wondered if you write your stories straight through, beginning to end, or if you write in pieces, a little here, a little there and some connecting sections. If you’ve done both, which do you find easier.

Hey, Melisa! I’m contracted to do eight books in the series. “Bite Marks” is book six, and I just finished book seven, which is called “Bitten in Two.” I have fully developed another urban fantasy series, but since it hasn’t been sold I can’t really discuss it right now. Hopefully I’ll be bragging it up to you by next spring!
Thanks, Kayla, I think they’re stellar as well!
It’s great to see you, Vale! Best of luck with your studies!
I appreciate your stopping by, Rocky! Take it easy!
Happy Halloween, Becky! My guys have scarfed all my candy, so I totally have to go buy more for the trick-or-treaters. How’s that for hilarious? Gosh, favorite literary villain, huh? (That’s me, stalling for time.) I think it would have to be Stephen King’s Walking Dude. Freaking scary.
Hey, Sue! Well, they tend to lock me in my room until I produce wordage, so that way actual work gets done. Otherwise I’d be skipping around playing in my flowers all day! I’d say I’ve loved writing since I was about twelve, and I’ve wanted to be a writer since about the age of fifteen.
I hope you find it so, Nikki!
I actually just made a list for an interview I recently did, Lisa, so here’s a copy:
The first four books in the Temeraire Series by Naomi Novik
Orphan’s Destiny, Orphan’s Journey & Orphan’s Alliance by Robert Buettner
Hal Spacejock: Second Course by Simon Haynes
Dead to Me by Anton Strout
The Awakened Mage by Karen Miller
The High Lord by Trudi Caravan

Oops. Sorry Mine went through more than once.. It wasn’t working at first! So so sorry!
Big fan, I pre-ordered the latest book as soon as I was able to do so on B & N, so it should be here soon — as quickly as B & N can deliver it to my door — which better be tomorrow
I read all the other books in the series in about a week - couldn’t put them down. I love how your characters, even the kick-a** heroine, have flaws. And Vayl is smokin’ hot, even though I also have a little crush on Cole and Bergman as well. I mean, come on, Cole is so sweet… and Bergman, I’ve always had a soft spot for geeks.
My questions to you are this: Are you SURE Granny May is just a facet of Jaz’ personality, a mere subconscious voice in her head? I dunno, I sorta think Granny May really is a presence there, giving her advice. Maybe she even hangs out with Raoul… Second, I’m afraid Vayl & Jaz will learn they are better partners than lovers. Tell me this isn’t true, and that they really, truly open up to each other and are madly in love for all of eternity…
Great series, Jennifer. I have lots of catching up to do though! Thanks for being here & offering such awesome prizes. Sure to make some verrrry happy fans!

LOL, Tiah! I am so seeing that smackdown in my head! You totally win, by the way! I do think the Jaz books would make terrific movies. We just need the right producer to fall in love with them. Cross your fingers!
LOL, Sophie! I’ll have to try the freezer bit, but I’m the same. No to movies, yes to horror books. Hubby hates to go to movies with me, because I’m always holding on to him so tight that when I jump I tend to try to yank his arm out of socket! There’s also the screaming in his ear. I just tell him that’s the price he pays for being my security blanket!
Krysten, I did read “None But a Blockhead” by Larry L. King that gave me some interesting moments. But the one that helped me most was Stephen King’s “On Writing.”
You know me, Summer, I’m big into new words! My understanding is that “Bitten in Two” should come out sometime around December 2010. I’m hoping they’ll push up the date, but I think that’s pretty firm.
My inspiration for the series, April, was my husband. Who, when he finally heard my whispered confession that I “love vampire stories” encouraged me to write one. (Why should this love of mine be a big deal, you might ask? Hard to explain unless you were raised in smalltown Midwest. Then, maybe, you’d get it.)
I’ll keep my fingers crossed, Heather R.
Cool deal, Stacy! Hope you have fun with it!
I’d point, first, to the humor, Deana. Then I’d mention the attention to plot and character development, which is never sacrificed for the sake of red hot sex (even though I’d never turn my nose up at a few pages of that in my own reading choices). As far as the romance goes, I’d even venture to say that I’ve come at that from a different direction, one that (I hope) will leave the reader much more satisfied ultimately because sometimes reality is actually better than fiction.
Wow, seraphina, do you really want me to reveal everything to you right here and now? How about I just tell you to trust your instincts–and trust me. I won’t let you down.
Thanks, Shirley!
Hi Shaine! Lately I’ve been thinking how cool it would be to change into one of those Transformers from the movies (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1055369/). I know that’s not where you were going, but those are such rad alien/machines! And badass, may I add, which obviously appeals to me in a big way! Weird that you should ask that second question, because I may have just heard it today. It’s “World is a Vampire” by Smashing Pumpkins. What do you think? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9a1OtHoJvg
Thanks for being such a terrific fan, Heidi! I just sent “Shadowstruck” to my agent, so it’s in her capable hands now. All we can do it wait. And that, my friend, is why sometimes the publishing biz is a drag.
Hi LisaG! Hope you found the answer to your question above!
I really appreciate that, Elie. The person who first encouraged me, and made me believe in myself, was my freshman English teacher, Mr. Powell. The hardest part of writing, for me, is the isolation it requires. I’m a quiet person by nature, but after a while I do go a little stir-crazy because I don’t get anything done unless I pretty much close myself in my office every day. So weekend trips become almost mandatory after a while.
Thanks, Michele! I have to say my favorite cover is still the first one, simply because it was my first. That’s the cover you see in the picture above, with the red lips and the running blood. So stark, beautiful, and deadly. Wow.
Thanks, Samantha! In my mind, the series is open-ended at this point, though I do know how it ultimately finishes. The problem of Vayl and Jaz and whether or not they could live together forever is taken care of in one of the stories. I forget which one, but if you haven’t read it already, you will soon.
It warms my heart to hear you say that, Kalea! I’d written a good chunk of “Once Bitten, Twice Shy” in third person with Vayl as the lead character–meaning the one whose perspective you saw most of the action through–when I could no longer ignore Jaz’s voice in my head. It was just as sassy, sarcastic, and funny inside my skull as many of you guys find it on paper. How could I deny her a voice when she kept insisting? After a while I admitted that it would be stupid not to give her a chance, and here we are.
Well, Donna, I knew Vayl was from Romania originally, so I looked up Romanian names and really liked Vasil (which is his full first name). But I knew he would’ve shortened it when he came to America. And I loved the wordplay of shortening it to Vayl. I wanted my heroine to have a shortened name as well, and almost immediately I thought of Jaz. Her last name, Parks, is purely because I wanted a pleasant image to follow her as a counterpoint to all the voilence and death she’d be leaving behind.
Hi there, MarnieColette! I love most of the old vampiric literary traditions. Except for the sleeping in coffins bit. That just never made sense to me. Why would anybody willingly do that? I mean, if you’re filming a movie of course it’s gonna creep out your audience, but I think it’ll creep out most vamps just as much. However my vamps do roast in the sun, so they can’t risk sleeping anywhere that stray rays can hit them either. Some choose coffins. Some go for underground vaults, or windowless rooms guarded by human trustees. Vayl prefers a lightproof tent because he’s slightly claustrophobic. P.S. Go pink Dells!
I’m glad to hear it, Lori! My favorite holiday is Christmas, followed closely by Halloween.
Thanks, Dina!
Wow, that’s so cool to know, Gina! (Yup, you must beware of gnomes now. Aren’t you glad I warned you?)
I think, Ember, it was basically my love of stories. And the fact that I had some talent at making them up. Yeah, I’ve had lots of jobs because, remember, I didn’t sell my first novel until I was forty-one-years-old. After graduating from college with an English degree I worked at a TV station for several years as their Continuity Supervisor. I also did some script writing for them on the side. When we moved to a different town, I stayed home with my kids and began writing the first of three unpublished (translation–bad) novels. During that time I also provided child care for a few other kids. After that I did freelance magazine writing. Then grant writing. And then the novels finally took off.
I know, rox! Seems like we’ve been waiting forever, hasn’t it? I’m so glad you could come to my party! Take care!
That’s interesting to know, Emma. I keep trying to figure out how to bring Trayton back into the picture, because I think he has a lot more to tell us. But I’m not sure if he’s willing to make an appearance in book eight. We’ll see!
Hi Jennifer, Congrats on your new release. Thank you for coming and sharing with us all, and for the chance to win your books.

Can’t wait to read!

Hi, Jennifer! Congrats on Bite Marks!!
So question - are Vayl and Jaz ever going to.. you know?!
(What? This is important!0
Oh! I just thought of something (it’s morning and I haven’t had my coffee yet!) maybe it already did?! OMG, don’t tell me I missed this. I’ve read book 1-3, and just got 4 and 5. I only need 6 and I’m good for a Jaz parks read-a-thon!
If you can’t say if Jaz and Vayl ever got together, just wink three times with your left eye, clap your hands and do a handstand and I’LL UNDERSTAND.
I RSVPed for this event.
2. It’s hard to think of gnomes and NOT picture the garden gnome statue variety! It would be interesting to see what your gnomes look like. What gave you the idea to used gnomes?

My question–how do you come up with the monsters? I mean, really, I never would have thought to make knomes evil little cannibals. Love the series, currently on Bitten to Death so I’m almost caught up. Yay!
I’m new to your books but Bite Marks sounds like a good read. The heroine Jaz seems like the kind of heroine I like - sassy and kick-ass! Are you planning more books in this series? :o) Tamsyn

I love these books !!!!!!!
It was the distinctive white cover that first caught my eye —- but it’s the characters and the world that Jennifer has created that has me marking each new release date on my calendar. Making sure I don’t wait a day longer than necessary to see what Jaz is up to. :+)
I love your books!! I really don’t like gnomes, so how did you come up with them in your new book? Lisa D. and yes I RSVP.
Ooh, a good excuse to sign up. Free stuff is always good.
I signed up for the newsletter and tweeted. I can’t do any of the myspace stuff at work.
Hello,

Jennifer I love your books. I finished Bite Marks last week and absolutely loved it….. When you write about Jaz Parks is she a extention of you. Do you write about her so well because you let her think like you?
I was a little side tracked by the whole space station aspect I am not sure why that was, but it was still awesome.
I signed up for Jennifers Newsletter and myspace. I also signed up for Bitten by Books on myspace and Blood Bank Ning. I tweeted I believe I am new to this tweeter thing. Also lastly I posted about your Jennifer Rardin Chat at http://book-whisperer.blogspot.com/2009/10/rush-over-to-bitten-by-book.html
Mainly Jennifer you rock, and I am constantly awaiting a new book. This is a good thing…..
Hi there!
I made it back. Thanks for the “good luck” Jen! Back at you! I think I’ve read something about a “fully developed new series” while nosing around the answers you gave. Do you mean Shadowstruck? Or something else?
Ooops, I nearly forgot: HAPPY RELEASE DAY!!! Congrats!!!
Well maybe fans of horror books are just much more sophisticated
Just be grateful you get to grab onto your hubby for the scary bits, I always go with friends, one in particular who loves horror films, and is not scared by anything, usually laughin away while i’m hyperventilating with fear!
Well, all my questions have been asked & answered, so let me just say how much I enjoy reading about Jaz & company — especially Jaz’s snarky sense of humor. Her sarcasm & wit remind me a lot of my 14 year old daughter (who also loves your books), especially when both of them are able to get out of situations that might otherwise land them in trouble (or ground them). My daughter credits quoting Jaz to me for once saving her from a fate worse than death (not getting to go to her friend’s house). Thanks so much for not only great reading but a fun mother-daughter bond!
I just recently learned of your series from the League of Reluctant Adults blog, then checked the books out. It sounds like a great series, and I’m looking forward to picking them up. I’ve become a friend on MySpace, but I noticed you’re not on Twitter, so that’s my question, are you planning on joining us there any time soon? I enjoy following my favorite authors, it’s fun catching glimpses of their daily lives, playing on Twitter when they’re supposed to be writing :o)
I RSVP’d, I’m friends with Jennifer and BBB on MySpace, follow BBB on Twitter and subscribe to the newsletter and voted in the poll.
Hi iokijo! Despite all the great choices out there, I still have to stick with my good old vampires. Just can’t get enough of them for some weird reason! I love the Gunslinger from Stephen King’s series. What a badass!
LOL, Kristy! No bucks from me! I don’t know how they figure this stuff out, just glad all I have to do is mail out prizes after it’s all said and done!
Hi Stacey! Most of the major details I remember, because it’s like I lived through them too. The important plot points are written on index cards that I keep on file on my desk. Small details that I’m not sure about I often go back and check, which is why I keep a copy of every book in my laptop.
I queried agents who dealt with the genre I was writing, A-K. My logic was that if I could get an agent to buy into the story, that meant it really was good enough to sell to a publisher. Also, agents have access to the bigger publishing companies in a way that unagented authors often do not.
Hi Wendy! I don’t want to ruin it for you, but let me just say you are gonna luuuurve book five!
I totally agree, Michelle. As for why I used gnomes? I think it’s all in the name. And the fact that they’ve never once stopped the cats from crapping in my mulch. Suckers.
I’m glad you feel that way, Melissa. I thought about them quite a while before I settled on something I hoped you all would really drool over!
Yeah, Kimmy, I do tons of research. I like to read individual traveler’s blogs. I also read professional travel books. The CIA has a great site that runs down info on most countries. And I consult people who actually live in the places about which I write.
I pretty much dive into my fear pool, Leslie. It’s very deep and full of the stuff that scares me. So far I’ve been able to pull out some pretty interesting creatures.
Great to hear, Tamsyn! Yup, we have two more planned after this one.
Thank you, Dorie! I think those white covers rock as well.
Hey, Lisa! Hope the above answers help you out.
I agree, Kathleen. Love the freebies!
That’s cool, Heidi. Hope you feel much better soon!
Hi Jackie! So glad you enjoyed the story! I would say Jaz is who I’d be if I just let it all hang out, didn’t give much of a crap about anyone, and said exactly what I thought all the time. Hmm.
Hi again, Vale! Nope, I wasn’t referring to Shadowstruck, which is my YA novel. The series in question is geared to adults, and that’s about all I can say right now.
LOL, Sophie!
The story about you and your daughter is just priceless, Heather! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for looking me up, Barbara. I’m still debating about Twitter. I’m afraid my time is so full with all my other online linkies that I’d have to drop one of them if I picked it up. So I haven’t decided what to do about that yet. Thanks for asking!

Hi Jennifer,
I read your first Jaz Parks book, “Once Bitten” and can’t wait to catch the others. Good luck with sales! I’ll be looking for the rest of the series.
Jennifer, awwwwesome!!
Hi Melia! Some of my all-time faves are “The Stand” by Stephen King, “State of Fear” by Michael Crichton, “A Palm for Mrs. Pollifax” by Dorothy Gilman, and “Guilty Pleasures” by Laurell K. Hamilton.
Thanks for giving it a try, Caitlin!
LOL, Margay! Me neither!
Me too, Vale, because that will mean we’ve sold them both!
I’m totally with you, Vickie. I’ve actually tried to buy more in stores lately because I’m better about sticking to a budget than when I get online and feel like the entire world of bookery is at my fingertips.
I do know some humorless people, Aori, but I almost feel like they purposely suppress their own instinct to laugh. So I guess my theory is that we’re all born with it. But some people give it priority and even try to figure out how to shape it in such a way that they can bring it out in other people. I’ve always thought it was a shame that comedies never received Oscars. In my opinion they’re the real works of art.
There’s a good possibility you will, annalisa.
Thanks so much, Ester, I appreciate that.
