Contest and Cocktails with Carole Nelson Douglas!
Urban Fantasy Bartender: Carole Nelson Douglas
“Cocktails invented to match books? Delilah Street, paranormal investigator, made me do it!! Now you can enjoy Delilah’s sexy signature blood thirsty drinks: Albino Vampire Cocktail, Brimstone Kiss Cocktail and Vampire Sunrise!!”
Just in time for Halloween!
The amazing folks at Simon and Schuster along with the very fabulous Carole Nelson Douglas have teamed up to bring the readers at Bitten by Books some amazing prizes and fun! Not to mention the oh so creepy mannequins posed for party time. LOL Carole, is there something we need to know???
The Albino Vampire Cocktail
1 jigger of white Crème de Cocoa
1 jigger of vanilla Stolichnaya
1 jigger of Lady Godiva white chocolate liqueur
Chambord raspberry liqueur
Layer the first three ingredients in a martini glass in this order: Crème de Cocoa, vanilla vodka, finally the white chocolate liqueur. Drop in a dollop of the Chambord. Don’t mix or stir. The Chambord will sink to the bottom, so the white cocktail has a blood-red base (which adds a nice kick at the end.)
Birth of a Bloody Good Drink
(Excerpted from Dancing With Werewolves by Carole Nelson Douglas)
“Another one for the road?” Even as Nicky spoke he nodded at the bartender. “The traffic on the Strip could kill a sober pedestrian.”
I laughed and hitched my skirt and myself onto a bar stool to eye the bartender. “I’ll have an Albino Vampire.”
His congenial face went as white as mine was naturally. All along the bar, chitchat stopped. Glasses ceased clinking. Other bartenders froze in the act of pouring scotch, gin, vodka, wine, beer. Obviously, Christophe’s staff knew the boss hated that rumor.
“What’s . . . in it?” My bartender sounded like he was being invisibly throttled.
Behind me Cocaine–Snow must be a, hmm, pet name-was pouring out a great rock ballad about Lady Velvet. I could feel his sunglasses zeroing in on my bare, defenseless, and still so well pampered back, and proceeded to ad lib a recipe. “A jigger of white Creme de Cocoa, a jigger of vanilla Stoly, a jigger of Lady Godiva white chocolate liqueur topped with a swirl of Chambord raspberry liquor the color of blood, in a martini glass.”
Nick Charles regarded me with awed approval and a gentle palm clapping. The bartender shortly after presented me with a dazzling white dessert of a drink tricked out with a hint of hot pink. The boys and girls at the bar gasped as one.
Nick and I chimed rims, then I swiveled to face the stage. Cocaine/Snow still had the spotlight but the sunglasses might be looking anywhere.
I lofted my glass in a farewell toast.
Snow lashed his spun-glass angel hair around like a white Persian cat-o’-nine-tails and ended the song with long, wailing banshee of a guitar chord.
I’d have liked to think the final flourish was just for me, but then so did every woman present, and most of them were storming the mosh pit, clawing each other for the honor of being one of the women Snow bent down to kiss.
Ridiculous. . . . “

Haven’t read her books yet so can’t comment, but they’re on my list. Tried the Albino (after getting some Chambord from a raspberry-loving friend). Guess you have to love raspberry to like it, so I won’t be having another. Plan to try the Vampire Sunrise next time. Pepper vodka, hot cinnamon schnapps & OJ? Sounds interestingly out there.

I haven’t read any of Carole’s books but from that teaser we got of Dancing with Werewolves, I am hooked. I am putting that on my next month’s book list. I have to watch my book purchase budget because my family likes to eat or something. (grin!)
I have actually had a albino vampire but didn’t know its origin. A friend of mine hosted a vampire themed party and made them. It was super yum!
[Reply]
Brimstone Kiss introduced me to Douglas’ work — immediately followed by Dancing with Werewolves. I really want another Deliah book with her vintage clothing and different powers!.

What a joy to read both of these books..I was really carried away. You are good, Carole. I recently have joined these type of reading and know I missed alot in all these years..have to get busy and catch up. Thanks for sharing and hope you have a wondeful Halloween. susan l.
[Reply]
1. I haven’t read her books yet but they are in the pile beside my bed. I may have to move them up in priority.
2. I want more!!
3. I don’t drink so I can’t help you with this one.
[Reply]
1. I have not read any of her books, but that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t be interested. I like mysteries involving paranormals.
Delilah Street sounds a lot like Della Street. Did you watch any Perry Mason like I did when younger?
2. On to the book sample:
Stilettos don’t work well in a graveyard, either.
Yay, Fox Mulder. Forensic crime TV, also my forte. Haha, a vampire who can “tan”.
I’m part Irish and don’t really like green either, unless it’s in nature. Clashes with my ivory skin and blue eyes.
Love the miniskirt dress look. I love antiques; not sure if I’ve seen a Victorian celery jar before, but I can imagine. Ted is a dirty trickster. The vamp gang can bite it (excusing the pun). Dying roses do smell sickly sweet–very specific. The Taxco jewelry mention makes me think of something like this: http://www.jacksonjewels.com/Vintage_Jewelry/8155_Mexican_blue_sterling_bracelet.htm Poor Achilles! Yes, thin white skin makes for bad eye circles. Love the 1940s look and model that in pictures. CSI Bismarck: I wouldn’t put it past ‘em.
All in all, I’d be interested to find out what happened to the cows and how vampire blood poisoning can be prevented/cured.
3. The cocktail sounds lovely, but I only have the Chambord. It should be thickly scented with sugary vanilla goodness and cream with a nice touch of raspberries. I’m pretty sure I would like this drink, but I would have to sip it slowly, as with all cocktails, given it’s strength (that is, only being made of alcohol).
Thank you!
[Reply]
that drink sound delicious
[Reply]
Heh. I have both Dancing With Werewolves and Brimstone Kiss (and am looking forward to the third book in the series), and all of the Irene Adler books except the most recent one (still in hardback, alas). She’s one of my favorite writers, and I love her stuff.
[Reply]

2. I am definitely checking them out now
3. eh, it was okay… a bit much for me.

I read both Dancing with Werewolves and Brimstone Kiss. I loved them! I am going to try the cocktail tonight!
[Reply]
Wish I could say that I read both books, but sadly I have not. This is the first time I have even heard of her name. Why I love BBB so much, bringing in a variety of new authors for me to try out.

[Reply]
I’ve read all the Midnight Louie books and thought they were great. I’m so pleased to find out about a new series from an author I enjoy about a subject I love.
I made the Albino Vampire but as I’m not allowed to drink I gave them to my daughter and her friends (all of legal drinking age!!) and they loved them.
[Reply]
Tried the cocktail. Not really my thing, I’m not big on cocktails. Sorry.
[Reply]
I have not read her books, but now it’s on my list to buy, borrow or steal– no, of course I wouldn’t do that. They are on my list though!
[Reply]
I haven’t read the books yet but they’re very intriguing–especially after the first 3 chapters. I have to say that I can’t wait to get my hands on them.
Quick question though, where in the world did you come up with these cocktails? Wow! I’d love to try the Albino Vampire, but the ingredients are out of my budget at the moment, lol… but I have to say, it sound DELICIOUS!
[Reply]
I’ve read Dancing with Werewolves, and I thought it was awesome!
I LOVED how Y2K made all of the vampires/witches/werewolves come out! If only lol!
And there were so many plot twists that kept me reading…not to mention Ric!
I haven’t gotten around to Brimstone Kiss yet, but I can’t wait to read it!
[Reply]
I just finished Dancing with Werewolves and I really enjoyed it! I loved that Delilah was not an all-powerful character and instead accepts help from others. It is a great story and a wonderful mystery. I am really looking forward to the next installment!

I have read Carole Nelson Douglas for years…I have every copy of Midnight Louie and Temple Barr in my library-most in hardback -first editions. I even have a couple of her short stories and she has signed them. I also have read all of her Irene Adler series and loved those-I especially like when she can pull one over on old Sherlock. LOL I adore her work. I did read Dancing with Werewolves and it was a bit different than her regular style but intriguing.
[Reply]
I’ve read Dancing with Werewolves and really enjoyed it. Brimstone Kiss is still in my TBR pile. When I read Dancing with Werewolves I just couldn’t pass up trying the Albino Vampire it was great and is now a favorite drink when when we have a party!!

Option #2)
I have to admit, I am not a fan of the prologue; it was too factual and the voice too removed to catch my interest. Once I got into chapter one, however…well, the voice grabbed me. I love the narrator’s attitude and her obvious intelligence. I’ll definitely consider picking it up the next time I’m in a bookstore.
[Reply]
I haven’t picked up any of these books, but after reading jsut a little bit it looks pretty interesting! I’ll be adding it to my list of new people to try out the next time I have some cash! Though it did begin a little slowly, so I was a bit skeptical of if I would like it at first.
[Reply]
I have not read Carole’s books….YET. They are on my TBR pile.
For a sweet creamy drink this was really good. I generally prefer more savory or citrus based drinks, but I would drink this again and have added it to the list for Halloween….

Wow! So many good comments and questions. Glad to find you’re trying the sample chapters and some already have Delilah books on their TBR piles. Also, glad to see readers of my Midnight Louie and Irene Adler series among you. It’s also great to hear the Delilah cocktails are
making the party circuit already and will in future!
The carolenelsondouglas.com website works, but I’m getting a revamp andupdate started, including a blog. Please email me at cdouglas@catwriter.com if you want the PDF of my annual Midnight Louie newsletter, which lists my series in order and has info on short stories and letters from readers . . .and the occasional cat picture. :))
First, the DRINKS: Biki, you wondered how on earth I came up with them. It was a case where a character led and I followed. When the sexy albino rock star/Vegas hotelier known as Cocaine (also aka Snow) came on to Delilah in his Inferno Hotel bar, she wanted to show him she wasn’t easy picking. Since he hated and denied the rumor he was an albino vampire, Delilah sashayed up to the Inferno bar and invented a drink by that name just to annoy him. Oops. Delilah found you can’t annoy a dude who’s lead singer for the Seven Deadly Sins and whose sin is, natch, Pride. Snow simply made the Albino Vampire the Inferno house drink at $12 a hit and raked in the money!
Delilah listed the clear and white liquors and gave amounts, but I had to tidy up after her and make the recipe amounts work. Vegas excess had already hit Delilah. When I went to the liquor store to set up a test bar, the brand-name liquor bottles totaled $80! So I added a note to the Albino Vampire recipe that cheaper varieties can be used.)
Delilah and I are also going to invent a Virtual Virgin one day for the nonalcoholic set.
The Albino Vampire is a sweet “dessert drink,” as some have noted. In fact, Sansouci, Werewolf Mob head muscleman, flirts with Delilah by comparing the cocktail to her: “a sweet, seductive girly drink with unsuspected kick.”
The Brimstone Kiss and Vampire Sunrise are stronger and more fiery. In fact, Delilah invents the Brimstone Kiss to weasel info out of Mr. Noir Guy, Humphrey Bogart. The BK, he tells Delilah, is “something you’d sip on all night long and I’d knock back in a couple of slugs.”
Yes, “celebrity” zombies are hotel attractions in Delilah’s Vegas: they are zombie bodies overlaid with the images and personas of Silver Screen characters like Sam Spade and Nick and Nora Charles and even Asta, their famous film terrier.
It’s great to hear from readers who followed my Midnight Louie feline PI in Vegas. My novella in The Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance 2 is told in Louie’s hard-boiled voice as he visits Delilah’s darker 2013 Vegas to help her solve the case of a dying vampire in a romantic triangle times three.
I also see Irene Adler addicts among you. The first book of the eight, Good Night, Mr. Holmes, was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year (also a Romantic Times and American Mystery Award winner–I cover the genre waterfront.) Its first trade paperback edition reissues Nov. 10 because of Robert Downey Jr.’s anticipated new Sherlock Holmes (with Irene Adler) movie at Christmas!
I’m having a ball taking Las Vegas to the dark side after keeping up with the actual Sin City in the Midnight Louie books through two decades of its own radical reinvention. And I love finding different slants on the usual supernatural suspects. Thanks, Linda George and Denise G. and others for mentioning that.
In the Midnight Louie series, which I call “Remington Steele with two couples and cat,” continuing mystery and romance character and story arcs all drive toward a suspenseful conclusion. As a character-riven writer. I love working with allies and enemies who aren’t always what they seem and setting the issues and dangers and challenges against a larger-than-life world.
Dani and Seri found the first book’s prologue start a bit slow, but I had to consider readers I already had who might find the urban fantasy/paranormal romance genres a huge jump.
Thanks, Tania L, “for the love. :)” and, Angelina, good to see you here! You have quite an inspiring personal story about using the Midnight Louie books to recover from a head-on crash.
For any intrigued by the eerie Kansas events, Delilah is returning there to solve them and the mysteries of her roots in Book Four.
Ah, yes, Brandy, the Silver familiar foisted on Delilah in Dancing with Werewolves. Will it be “solved” in Brimstone Kiss? It’s still a “character” and is still showing spooky and even sexy new sides.
Thanks to Carol M. for the lovely personal recommendation, and those who relished what iokijo called my “twisted humor.” Lisa D, Ric thanks you for finding him “as sexy as Brad Pitt.” Delilah and I will have to see that he lives up to that. And thanks to R.E.B. for including the URL for Jackson Jewels and its vintage jewelry, almost as yummy as a Inferno Bar drink. BTW, a Victorian celery jar would be a tall glass vase to us, just high enough to hold celery in ice water.
Thanks to so many for their comments, and to Susan Leech, Happy Halloween wishes too. Happy Halloween to all! It’s Midnight Louie’s birthday, of course, and not far off from mine. :))

I have to say that I was suckered into buying Dancing With Werewolves simply because it’s set in Las Vegas… and Sunset Park… a place I know OH SO well. I am always anxious and a bit worried about the way others see my fair ::cough:: city. LOL Needless to say, I was NOT disappointed. I just adored Delilah and the whole gang. I am very anxious to get my hands on Brimstone Kiss!!
Thanks for visiting and much success to you!

I’ve read the first book, Dancing with Werewolves, and enjoyed it a lot though some of the narrative structure irked me. I did however love the fact it was populated with so much old world nostalgia. It reminded me of the times my grandma and grandpa would tell me about the old days of Broadway.

2. I had never heard of these before but after reading the first few chapters, they sound really interesting! They sort of remind me of The Dresden Files and Rachel Caine’s Weather Warden series, an air of mystery and adventure just waiting to happen.
3. Unfortunately underage, so no Albino Vampire for me

I found out I had just gotten “Dancing with Werewolves” it is really entertaining I don’t want to put it down for a second even though I have to. I only have about 90 pages left and can’t wait to find out if there’s something wierd about RIC as well as Quicksilver. Now there’s something I’m almost sure he’s more than just a dog, but can’t figure out what or who he is yet. I’ll have to get Brimestone Kiss next (ASAP). Way to go….

I bought “Dancing With Werewolves” and “Brimstone Kiss” a bit ago but haven’t had a chance to read them yet. They sounded so good from the back blurb that I had to get them. I need to read them soon! Also, the drink recipes sound delicious. Do you have any non-alcoholic drink recipes for those of us that don’t drink alcohol?
