Run the Gauntlet by Amarinda Jones

****½

Eloise Gaunt, the very last female Gaunt, and Arrow, a vampire, both know they are destined to be together since Caitriona, her kinswoman, cursed her one thousand years ago. However, that does not mean Eloise will just give in to the inevitable. As far as she is concerned, it is not going to happen. Who in their right mind would want to partner themselves to a vampire, anyway? She is determined to avoid meeting him as much as possible.

Similarly, Arrow does not want anything to do with Eloise. Sure, he has dreamt of her, his supposed true love. But, honestly, he is having so much fun having sex with different women and being a bachelor for 700 years. Who would want to be attached to one woman all his life when there are so many he could choose from? Yes, he definitely does not want anything to do with Eloise. Thanks, but no thanks.

But fate brings them together whether they like it or not, anyway. From first sight, they irritated each other. Arrow is arrogant and cocky; Eloise is “pissy.” Nevertheless, they might pretend the draw is non-existent, but their desire for each other is undeniable. And poor thirty-plus Eloise is cursed to stay a virgin until Arrow takes her. Yes, I felt like strangling Caitriona, too.

As expected, destiny cannot be denied her “victims.” It starts with one earth-shattering kiss. Then, a one-time-deal-let-us-prove-the-curse-wrong kind of sex follows. And we all know what happens: they simply cannot keep their hands and heart off each other. To further complicate things, they have to run the gauntlet and pass seven tests to stay alive. Plus, aside from Caitriona’s tests (she is actually on their side, believe it or not), there are outside forces who want them to fail and will do anything in their powers to separate the two lovebirds.

I definitely enjoyed reading Run the Gauntlet. I love all the characters, especially Eloise. How can Arrow resist her when she is the only one (even though she is more than a foot shorter) who can stand up to him? Talking about David and Goliath parody - the mighty playboy did fall; he is the first one to concede he is irrevocably in love. Their first meeting is so hilarious with both of them pretending to hate each other and trying to deny the sexual tension between them. Yes, I guarantee this short novel has the power to drive away all your stress. Amarinda, I am definitely waiting for the follow up.
