“Golden light edged my body as I stood before the long, gilded mirror. I spread a palm over the wrinkles marring the smooth run of the sheer silk gown. A wry smile pulled at my mouth. The practically transparent black silk revealed curves and planes of very bare skin. The gown left very little to the imagination, just as it was meant to. I straightened my shoulders and lifted my chin. Being a reiver, the fertile daughter of a queen, it was my time to hunt down a mate. Any way I could.”

Tate knows she must find a tanao, a male vampire, and make him kneel before her as her mate for life. However, as the daughter of a minor queen who is hunting at the same time as the daughter of the ruling queen, she knows she should just find a minor tanao who will easily submit to her and suffice as a minor queen’s mate. She really couldn’t expect any better than that. Aiming to tame the son of the ruling queen, for example, however much he makes the beast in her yearn to make him her own, is a dangerous idea. For if she tries to claim him and he refuses to kneel, she will end up his escravo - his slave forever.

Jager is not only the son of the ruling queen, he is also her right hand man and does everything she ordered. He kneels before no one as is evidence by the many escravo he has already at his beck and call wearing silver as the symbol of slavery. The night of the hunt, his orders are to make Tate his latest slave. Now if only she would just willingly becoming his escravo rather than fight him on this, it would make his job easier.

Jager cannot disobey the queen, and Tate is essentially fighting for her birthright as well as her freedom. The question is, whose will is stronger?

To be honest, this story not only exceeded my expectations but, even from the first sentence all the way to that last word, “Consort” kept me well captivated. It is a story where you will end up liking both main characters but actually hoping for their mutual - albeit contrary - success. Add its refreshing take on vampire culture and a plotline that isn’t your generic predictable romance, and you’ve got an enjoyable story in “Consort”.

I loved this story! Kim’s take on vampires really captured my interest. I couldn’t put the book down once I started.
