No Funny Stuff! by Michele Hart
Thalia, the Muse of Laughter, is a bit worried when she is called before her master Apollo while he is visiting with Athena and Aphrodite. The combination is giving her an ominous feeling and she hopes they are just in need of a good shoe recommendation and that Apollo had thought of her particular propensity for footwear.
Entrusted with a task far more important then finding a quality pair of sandals (though Zeus knows, finding a quality sandal maker is getting harder and harder in this day an age), Thalia is to deliver a gift to the last in a cursed line descended from Athena’s most beloved servant.
Andrew Murphy is doomed to live a short and sad life and as his days are numbered, Athena wants Thalia to inspire contentment for the remainder of his life. She is warned not to tell others about her task and that by helping Andrew they would be defying an Olympian’s rightful retribution and could face Zeus. Of course while that makes Thalia shudder, she can’t wait to get started on this task even if Justice is standing between her and the mortal world and she knows just the person to call on for aid in this quest and it’s one of her favorite comedic teams.
Well into the worst day of the rest of his life, Andrew Murphy (Murphy’s Law, indeed) makes what he knows will probable be his last walk down First Avenue after losing his job. Andrew is reviewing his life to the salve of Aerosmith and dreading the job hunt to come, while being glad that he has always been a saver, when his life flashes before his eyes in the form of a Ford pick-up’s grill. Being a half foot from death is never fun, especially when it’s your half foot. Just so you know, it’s also not fun when your would be murderess has a black rat of a Chihuahua that likes to bite when Drew is in the middle of a tirade at the pretty street killer named Daisy. After she knocks him over the head and then gives all his money to Homeless Mary, he has no recourse but to accept her ride home though he demands that there be no funny stuff. Little does he know that Daisy is his best friend’s sister and that he’s about to get roped into a cross country road trip to try to fix the problems that could force the family’s tree farm in Colorado into bankruptcy and that his life is about to get a great deal funnier.
What do you get when you mix the Muse of Laughter, a calamity ridden man, a fantastically eccentric red head, a Chihuahua with the heart of a rottweiler, and a task from the Gods? An utterly fabulous story filled with humor and depth, that’s what. This story practically flew off the pages and I had so much fun following these characters from the feisty country girl Daisy and her wild coyote of a dog Olé, to the sarcastic Drew, and the zany shoe loving Thalia as they go on their madcap journeys that aren’t all fun and games. I loved this spin on Greek Mythology (the bits with the jets and satellite were awesome) and the back story for Drew’s family curse was interesting. The interplay between the different deities was well done and a rather humorous version of what was said to happen rather frequently when Olympians take sides. I also got a real kick out of Thalia’s various shoe stores. I highly recommend this tale if you’re looking for a laugh out loud story that is the perfect remedy for a downer of a day or a long day at work.

I’ve read a couple of these books in the Song Of The Muses series and enjoy each one! Just so unique! I hope they do something like this again (series and mythology theme).
