A big welcome to our readers today! Be sure to read to the end of the interview to find out how to WIN the fabulous prizes being offered up.

PLEASE NOTE: This is not a fixed time event, the post just goes live at 10:30 am CDT. You can stop by any time during the day or evening and leave your questions and chat.

PLEASE KEEP SPOILERS TO A MINIMUM. Not all of the readers today have read Erica’s book.

Interview:

Hi Erica!

Welcome to Bitten by Books, we are excited to have you here today!

I would like to thank you taking the time to join us for the question and answer session with our readers. It has been very interesting to get to know more about you and what makes you tick as a writer! Readers, if you haven’t done so already please stop by and get your copy of Erica’s newest book Shadowfae.

BBB: What are the most challenging and the most rewarding aspects of writing?

EH: The hardest part for me is that middle-of-the-book ‘bleh’ part, where it’s just not shiny any more. After two months or more of work, even the most exciting project will lose its glitter. The most rewarding parts? Typing THE END. Knowing I’ve got a nice juicy manuscript to revise — I love revising!

BBB: Do you consider your series paranormal romance or urban fantasy? and do you think it is important to distinguish between the two?

EH: I think for readers it’s very important to distinguish. People want to know what they’re getting. If a book is mis-labeled it can be very disappointing, especially if you’re expecting a happy ending to the romance and it ends badly, or there’s no ending at all.

My series is urban fantasy, but it has romance in it. Each book features a different heroine, and each heroine gets her happy ending in that book. But there are ongoing subplots and recurring characters, which means the romance isn’t always front and center. And sometimes the heroine tries more than one guy before she makes up her mind. Heh. Sometimes. Who am I kidding? Always!

BBB: Do you feel that your worldly travels help provide a particularly rich setting for your books?

EH: My books are set in Melbourne, the city I grew up with, so I hope my depictions of the streetscape and atmosphere are authentic. But I think travel gives you perspective, and when you’re creating and sustaining a paranormal world, you have to think outside what you’re familiar with. Travel also imparts a sense of wonder, or at least it does for me. Because the urban parts of my country are so new — we’ve only had Western settlement for 220 years — the place can be pretty sterile at times. But those old European and Mediterranean cities are brimming with secrets and shadows, thousands of years of culture and tradition, and you can just taste magic on the air. That’s the feel I’ve tried to create in my stories.

BBB: What is the most ridiculous thing that you have thought about doing to any of your characters but never did?

EH: Heh. When I think of a ridiculous idea, I tend to go right ahead and do it. My favourite crazy-idea-that-made-it is the fairy serial killer idea in book 2, Shadowglass. Don’t want to give away too much :) But some ideas are too off-the-page even for me. Anything that makes the characters irredeemable is a no-no, and I have to take care, even with the villains, because I never know who the heroine and hero of the next book might turn out to be!

BBB: We know that you have a second book in the Shadowfae Chronicles coming out next year. How many more books do you have planned for the series?

EH: I’m working on book 3, Shadowsong, about a banshee gangster hunting for her mother’s murderer. Don’t have a release date for that one yet, but I anticipate Fall 2010. I’m also contracted for book 4. After that, who knows? The series arc I’ve got planned would take at least a couple more after that.

BBB: How do you keep track of your world building?

EH: I use a Wiki for a series bible. In it, I keep notes on all the creatures, their appearance, powers, environmental effects and the like. I have different kinds of fairies with unique attributes that need to be kept consistent. But I’m not very good at keeping my Wiki up to date. Mostly I hoard it all in my head, and go madly flipping through manuscripts to check that elusive detail. Organisation would be a wonderful thing, wouldn’t it?

A few locations crop up in all the books — for instance, I have a nightclub called Unseelie Court that features a lot — so by now I can see those pretty well in my mind. Google Maps is a fabulous resource, and I have a little Google Map with various locations In Melbourne marked for my reference. I could show you exactly where Jade’s house is, which restaurants she eats at, where she does her shopping…

The trickiest thing is remembering what colour Kane’s fingernails are. I kid you not! Depending on his mood, his nails change colour, and I’m forever flicking back to see which colour means what. A small thing, true, but I like to get the details right.

BBB: What do you feel are the benefits of the new electronic readers such as Kindle 2 or Sony Digital Book Reader to the environment?

EH: To the environment? I’m not sure there are that many. We’re still printing the same vast numbers of books, and when the readers finally break down we have to dispose of them somehow. I think the real benefit is to readers, giving them flexibility and choice.

BBB: What impact do electronic readers create on the bottom line for authors in the end? Do you feel they have a negative impact or positive, or no impact at all that you can see?

EH: Oh, I couldn’t really say. But making more books more accessible to more readers seems like a good thing for everyone.

BBB: What else do you currently have in the works? Do you have any other series or stand alones forthcoming?

EH: I’m working on more Shadowfae books for now. But we’ll see what the future brings. I have a few ideas for a post-apocalyptic UF with an SF twist. But that’s a secret :)

BBB: What made you decide to use Succubi in the first book?

EH: You mean apart from: “Wow, she can suck out a guy’s soul? Cool!” ?

I’d read other authors’ series about succubi and loved them. But I saw a sadder, darker side to a succubus’s story that wasn’t being told. It’s not all about fun and hot guys and great sex. In Shadowfae, Jade is a murderer — an assassin, in truth, using her hellish powers at the behest of her demon master — and it’s not as if she can keep distance from her victims. She’s right there, looking into their eyes as they go to hell.

After 150 years, all the killing is really wearing her down. Her self-esteem has evaporated from all these sordid encounters, and from constantly using her demon magic to make herself attractive. She’s still got 850 years of demon servitude to go, and then she’ll burn in hell forever. And as for relationships… well, sooner or later they all ask what you do for a living, and no one wants a girl who has sex with other guys to stay alive.

The idea of a heroine who thinks life can’t possibly get worse — but it can’t get better either, because there’s no escape — intrigued me. She believes she has both nothing to lose, and nothing to aim for. So I gave her a chance to escape — a forbidden ritual that involves damning the four most repellent souls in town — and let her run with it :)

BBB: Where do you see the urban fantasy genre headed? Can you see it slowing down in the near future, or do you think that the immediate future is pretty bright for it?

EH: I can’t see it slowing down any time soon. There’s so much great new stuff out there. Just when you think it’s getting old and boring, someone comes up with something new. And we’re educating a whole new generation of readers with all the great young adult UF that’s coming out. Even aside from the latest ‘hot thing’, whether it’s demons or angels or steampunk or whatever, I think readers still love a great story with the old staples: vampires, monster hunters, kick-ass heroines. I know I do!

BBB: How do you navigate the actual story writing, e.g. do you pre-plot it all out, get the main details and pantz it, divide up chapters, etc.?

EH: Heh. Remember, you asked :) I’m the pre-plot queen. I structure everything out, and I mean everything. I do goal and conflict charts for all the characters. I coax the plot into acts and turning points and scene-and-sequels. I know precisely where each character arc should be, at the beginning and end of each scene. By the time I’m finished, I have a twenty-page document that tells me scene-by-scene exactly what to do. And then I open a new document (landscape, please, Century Schoolbook 12pt single spaced) and start at the beginning, and write through to the end. I type THE END when I get there. And then I revise, but there’s not usually much to do.

For me, outlining to this extent doesn’t take the fun out of it, or stifle my creative thingies. It’s a safety blanket, really. I can change it if I want to, but I know that if I stick to it, at least the story will be solid. And the drafting process is where all the colour and excitement comes in. Until then, my characters are ideas, not people, and I love discovering their quirks along the way.

BBB: Do you have any plans for book signings/ readings anytime soon? If so, where can our readers find you? Any chance for a stateside tour?

EH: Ooh, I’d love to come to the US! I have vague plans to attend Romance Writers of America in 2010. Nashville, oh my!

BBB: If you could choose to be either a shapeshifter or vampire for eternity, which would you choose and why? Or would you be some other creature?

EH: Vampire, please! I’d choose vampire over shapeshifter any day. Full moons and packs and alpha males and all that running around naked… Actually, now that I think about it, it doesn’t sound too bad! But I love the idea of eternal youth and beauty. And hypnotism, to bend puny mortals to my will.

BBB: The cover on your book is absolutely stunning. It is foiled and read. Who did the cover art and are you happy with it?

EH: No, I’m not happy. I’m ecstatic! I have so much love for these covers. The design people done a truly awe-inspiring job, and from an author’s perspective, I think they’ve captured the flavour of the books perfectly.

The cover illustrator is Craig White, and you can see his portfolio here: http://www.craigwhiteillustration.com/

I’m sure you’ll recognise many of his UF covers there. Wonderful!

You said you’ve read other stories with succubi, so I was wondering, did you read any of Laurell K. Hamilton’s Anita Blake series? I really like the idea that you’re looking at the dark, not-so-fun side of succubi, too. That would definitely be nice for a change. :) Also, have you read LKH’s Merry Gentry series to inspire the name of your nightclub, Unseelie Court?

Thanks for the interview and talking to us today!

    Hi Erica!
    Thanks for sharing with us!
My question is about names…how do you come up with them? I haven’t read your books, but I read the blurbs and two of your characters are named Jade and Ice. I’m especially intrigued about the name Ice…I can’t say I’ve ever met anyone named Ice lol!
I also read on your site that you were an officer in the Air Force! Has that influenced your books…or I guess a more general question, have your past careers influenced your work? Or do you imagine more than draw from your experiences?

Happy to hear your series is set in a little more “exotic” location than most UF I’ve read. Not that I dislike series set in US/UK, far from it, but there are so many other locations to explore.

That said, is the whole series set in Melbourne or do you plan to “branch out” at some point?

Good morning everyone! It’s a sultry and overcast Thursday morning here in Newcastle. Thanks so much for dropping in, everyone! Bear with me a moment while I catch up on all your questions :)

Carol M asked: What other types of books do you enjoy in addition to UF?

I also read PR and horror, some high fantasy and romantic suspense. I like Stephen King, George RR Martin, Suzanne Brockman… Sadly, my TBR pile is growing taller and taller…

Barabara Van Cor asked: When you get stuck on writing what do you do to clear your mind?
If it’s during the day, I walk my dog, just to get some fresh air and perspective. He’s a little white and red terrier who loves everyone and everything, especially walks, and especially the days when I’m stuck, because he often gets to go a long, long way!
At night time, I’ll go for my favourite DVDs, just to think about something else for a while. Currently, it’s Supernatural.

Cyd J asked: What is your favorite torture device? (Real or Imaginary); and: Who inspired you the most as a writer?

Heh! Your imagination goes some funny places, Cyd :) I’d have to say my favourite torture device (for characters, of course!) is guilt. Self-torture is the worst, bwahahaha…
Inspiration as a writer? When I was a teenager I wanted to be Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. I loved those Dragonlance books so much. And I think their straightforward yet dramatic style has stayed with me, though I tend to be a little more descriptive now.

    Have done #’s 5 and 6 etc.

I do appreciate the difference between Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance. I like to read UF as a series, where as the romance I will just pick up occasionally. Erica’s book sound good, and I will be picking it up through my local independent bookstore.

  52. Comment by Erica Hayes — October 21, 2009 @ 4:54 pm

Elaine G asked: What book are you reading right now?
Night Falls Darkly by Kim Lenox. It’s an historical PR with a dark, angry, secretive hero and an amnesiac heroine. It’s good so far :)

Tina i asked, re: cover art: Did you have any say in the outcome?
Nope. Can’t claim responsibility, I’m afraid. I told them how cool I thought it was — does that count? :)

Lisa: by all means, visit for the tennis! It’ll be nice and hot in January!

Meghan S asked: what’s your favourite thing to do while writing?
I like silence. I don’t like to work with music on, although if it’s a choice between music and television noise I’ll take the music :)

Rebecca M asked: Do you have any places you want to visit while attending the Romance Writers of America convention in Nashville next year?
To be honest I don’t know that much about the US. I’ve only ever been to Washington DC, and that was great fun. I’d like to see the Grand Canyon. And Niagara Falls. And a space shuttle launch! And that really big ball of string you guys have got…

Hi Erica, excellent interview…I am on pg 74 of Shadowfae, just read a very touching scene between Jade and Rajah, it made me teary eyed…two tortured souls meant to be together, i love it!!!
Btw, would love to meet you at RAW in 2010..i need to make plans for it *grins*

I would like to know…How difficult (or easy) is it for you to write the hawt sex scenes?

i am very intrigued by Vorenus Luna, love the name *grins*..is he a villian in this bk? (crossing fingers you say NO) and also, he is a recurring character in future Shadow bks?

    Thank You so much,
    Muah!!!

Mindy S asked (and this was Raelena P’s question too): Which author(s) most inspired you to become a writer? Or was there a book you read that you said “Ick! That’s not right” then set about correcting the evil with your books?
LOL! I think I first got inspired by all those heroic fantasies I read in high school. Saving the world was so… well, heroic. But I really enjoyed the romantic aspects of those stories too, and I think that’s what really sucked me in: I wanted more romance. So when I found UF and PR there was no going back :)

Fallon Hadley asked: How long do you spend on research for your books?
It varies. Mostly I research locations, how long it takes to get from point A to point B, what a certain neighborhood looks like, which suburb my characters should live in. A lot of the paranormal stuff I invent from thin air :) so you can blame any inconsistencies squarely on me!

Jackie U asked: Is it difficult doing so many interviews in such a short amount of time?
It’s fun! All the questions are slightly different, and hey, I’m a writer — I’ve got a lot to say :)

Jacqueline L asked: 1) I love pens and stationery, in general. What’s your favourite pen? 2) When you’re not writing, what do you like to do for fun?
Ooh, you’re a stationery geek too! :) I like pens that have some shape to them, some contours and curves that sit nicely in my hand. Can’t abide a straight pen.
For fun, I read, and watch any kind of TV show that has paranormal stuff in it. I also play music, I’m in an orchestra.

Medievalgrrl asked: If they made a movie out of one of your books, which book would you want it to be and who would you want to play which characters?
This is such a tough question :) I have this idea of what my stories look like, and it’s hard to imagine it translated to the screen. But I suppose if they twisted my arm: I think Shadowglass (book 2) would make a better movie than Shadowfae. Just because of the way the plot pans out. As for actors… someone famous enough that people would go see the movie :)

tynga asked: I know you can’t give spoilers but what kind of action can we expect in second book?
Mayhem, excitement and hot sex :) The MCs are Ice and Indigo, a pair of fairy thieves who get caught up in the hunt for a stolen magic mirror. Ice is shy, clumsy, unsophisticated, and thinks Indigo doesn’t know she’s alive. Indigo is frosty, suave and tortured (of course!) and is avoiding Ice for his own shadowy reasons… Hmm. Am I being vague enough?

Amanda L asked: what people in your life have been most supportive of your writing?
Everyone! My whole family is so interested and supportive and enthusiastic. And I have a great bunch of crit partners, who don’t let me get away with any garbage :) but they’re always there to pick me up when I stumble.

Tamara Shurling asked: when did you start thinking about becoming a writer?
I’ve been writing stories since I was a little kid. But the idea of actually doing it ‘for real’ came later, when I realised I was bored with ‘normal’ jobs and needed to do something more creative and self-motivated. I had the opportunity to give away my day job a couple of years ago, so I put all my effort into becoming a better writer, and hopefully it’s paid off!

Emmad asked: do you have an early tip for the Melbourne Cup and have you ever gone to watch it live?
LOL! I’m not much of a racing person. I’ve been to the local races here, but never the Melbourne Cup. Cup Day is a public holiday in Melbourne, and the rest of the country kind of just takes the day off anyway. I hear Efficient is the early favourite…

Thank you for such a great interview! I’m a nonfiction writer trying to try my hand at fiction and I was thinking that outlining would be a good way to go. I used to LOVE to outline in college. Nerdy I know. Do you think it’s easier or perhaps comes across more “realistic” to write about a place we know, rather than a place we have to research from scratch because we aren’t familiar with it?

    I’m a follower and a subscriber.

  62. Comment by Erica Hayes — October 21, 2009 @ 5:55 pm

Anna S.H. asked: Who are some of your favourite authors? Do you see yourself exploring some of the other sub-genres of romance?
Favourite authors tend to be the one’s I’m reading at any given time! There’s so much good stuff out there. I read Dark Time by Dakota Banks the other day and loved it. Authors in the genre I tend to come back to include Jim Butcher, Anya Bast, Keri Arthur. As for me, I think I’ll stick to UF for now :) I’d like to write a proper PR but I’m not sure I could pull it off. I tend to get too excited about my subplots! But I’d love to write a futuristic/sci-fi rom.

Linda AK asked: Is it fun to write about her?
Jade? Absolutely. She’s tough and driven and not afraid to laugh at herself. And I really love writing paranormal powers, spells and stuff. Very cool.

R.E.B. asked: did you read any of Laurell K. Hamilton’s Anita Blake series? Also, have you read LKH’s Merry Gentry series to inspire the name of your nightclub, Unseelie Court?
Alas, my TBR pile betrays me :) I read the first few Anita books a long time ago, and I really loved her character. Does Merry have a nightclub called that? Ha! Didn’t know that. I haven’t read that series… I know, shame on me :) one of these days!

Jillian S asked: My question is about names…how do you come up with them? I also read on your site that you were an officer in the Air Force! Has that influenced your books…or I guess a more general question, have your past careers influenced your work? Or do you imagine more than draw from your experiences?

The name ‘Jade’ kinda just came with the character. ‘Ice’ gave me a little more trouble. All the fairy characters’ names do. I just can’t imagine fairies calling their kids Brian or Mabel, y’know? And my fairies have elemental affinities, so many of their names come out of that. I have Ice, Blaze, Azure, Indigo, Diamond, Iridium. Eventually I’m gonna run out, and I’ll have to have one called Rufus or something :)

Re: past careers influencing my work… they’ve been such a non-event, they wouldn’t make very good fiction :) but I think all our experiences add up to make us the writers we are. The air force thing is useful on the odd occasion when I write sci-fi, in particular.

Libby L asked: where is your favorite spot to go visit? Do you have a spot that you consider special?
On a personal level, I like the park in the town where I grew up. My parents still live there, so I get to go back every so often. It’s tranquil, and it reminds me of being young, I guess :)
But the most spectacular thing I ever saw was Abu Simbel in Egypt. Indescribable. Awe-inspiring.

  66. Comment by Erica Hayes — October 21, 2009 @ 6:25 pm

Margay asked: How are you going to keep [the series] fresh and entertaining?
I have no idea :) LOL! No, seriously, I just aim to make each book the best story it can be, with the most intriguing characters and conflicts. I think having new main characters for each book helps with that. Once a heroine’s story is told, I can move on to others.

Sharon K asked: which was the hardest book to write and why?
The most recent one always seems the hardest :) Each book has its own challenges. This last one (book #3) was probably the hardest so far, just because I got halfway through and decided I didn’t like the ending I had planned :) I hate it when that happens!

LisaG asked: How do you write a sequel without adding too much of the same elements to it that are in the first? What do you do when you are in the middle of the book and have a brain-fart and can’t go on?

it’s difficult to know how much recap info to insert in the sequel. I have it narrowed down to a few essential facts the reader needs to know about my world or it won’t make sense. I make sure I include those right up front in each story, and from there I think it’s okay to let the reader figure things out for themselves. And so long as you let the characters grow and learn from what’s gone before — don’t press the ‘master reset’ button at the beginning of every book — then it shouldn’t get repetitive. At least, that’s my theory :)

Re: Brain farts in the middle of books. LOL! That’s one thing outlining is good for. If I get to the middle and it’s broken, I can go back to the plan and fix it. But if I plan properly, it doesn’t happen very often.

Lori T asked: How many books do you have planned for this series?

I’m contracted for four, but the series arc I’m planning would take it out to… hmmm… at least a couple more than that. If readers keep enjoying them, I hope to have the chance to do that.

Summer G asked: Jade is quite a character… is there a chance that she’ll be in the next book you’ll write? Of the books that you have written, which is your favorite?

Jade shows up in book #2 as a minor character. Maybe one day I’ll tell more of her story…
Favourite…? Hmm. I love them all for different reasons. But the one I’m working on at the time is always my favourite! I get so immersed in the story. And then the idea for the next one catches my eye…

Paula H asked: is the whole series set in Melbourne or do you plan to “branch out” at some point?

So far, all the stories are in Melbourne, and I imagine I’ll stay there. But you never know what might occur to me…

Caroline j asked: what do you love and inspire about your books?
I think I love the atmosphere the best. It’s such a dangerous, conflict-riddled world. I love imagining what it’s be like to live there, and then trying to translate that to the page, along with all the colours and smells and sights… great fun!

Samantha Briffett asked: what sort of spin do you put on your…creatures…to make them yours?
I throw out all the nice stuff ;) No, seriously, I just try to imagine them in my own mind, rather than starting with what’s gone before and trying to twist it. My succubus is a little different in that she’s not a demon, but a human in demon thrall. I don’t use light and dark courts for my fairies — they’re not rule-followers. The demons have a court, though, and they’re busy dividing up the world for soulfood. My angels are… well, you’ll have to wait until book #2 to meet them!

Oh, and Canadians are all good for this contest :) assuming you have electricity there, ha ha… I can make those jokes because Australia is even more out of the way…

Heather C asked: What first interested you in writing urban fantasy? Are you a sci-fi nut?

Yeah! I loved Star Trek: The Next Generation — never did like that Captain Kirk, but TNG I loved, and that got me into all kinds of other stuff. Not the hard stuff, though. I’m a maths geek at heart, but too much explanation of the science just bores me. I’d rather technobabble!

UF is a great genre for me because it’s got a bit of everything — romance, paranormal, suspense, adventure — and it’s generally heroine-focused, which I like. When I first started SHADOWFAE, I wanted to write a paranormal romance, but the other stuff kept getting in the way, so I just ran with it.

Kelly Ethan asked: You mentioned you use a wiki. Could you explain that some more?

Sure! The one I use is a free one called TiddlyWiki. You can download it and run it on your computer, rather than online. It’s just like your own little Wikipedia — I have a page for each character and each type of creature, listing their different attributes. And then I have a home page with a list of links to those pages. It’s just a filing system, really, and like all series bibles, it’s only as good as what you put into it.

  75. Comment by Suzanne P — October 21, 2009 @ 7:20 pm

Was it hard to pick your genre of books?

  76. Comment by Erica Hayes — October 21, 2009 @ 7:30 pm

Raonaid Luckwell asked: Mmm, are there any songs out there that make you instantly think of your characters? (Sort of like theme songs I should say). And, if you could collaborate on a writing project with someone alive or dead, who would it be and why?

I use music more for atmosphere than for characters. I have some playlists on my website and they’re more about the overall feel of my world. But I have to say Unforgiven II by Metallica sounds a lot like Jade…

Collaboration? Someone dead, so they wouldn’t interfere ;) or an illustrator who could read my mind. That’d be great. My artistic talents are sadly lacking.

Julia S asked: What was your favorite genre growing up?
Probably high fantasy. I loved David Eddings and Dragonlance. I wanted to be Dragon Highlord Kitiara when I grew up… Probably says a lot about why I enjoy UF, eh? She’s a very UF kind of heroine.

Luna asked: How difficult (or easy) is it for you to write the hawt sex scenes? And, I am very intrigued by Vorenus Luna, love the name *grins*..is he a villian in this bk? (crossing fingers you say NO) and also, he is a recurring character in future Shadow bks?

{waves} Sex scenes… sometimes easy, sometimes difficult. Some characters know exactly what to do. Others need to have everything explained to them… I usually write a basic version first, y’know, the what-goes-where kinda stuff. And then I go back and put in all the good bits ;) For me, hitting exactly the right emotional note in a love scene is the most difficult thing. If I don’t get that right, the entire scene will mean nothing.

Re: Vorenus Luna. I couldn’t possibly say {wicked grin} he is a devious character, though. All may not be as it seems…

Maree Anderson asked: Have you any plans to write any more prequels? Enquiring minds are dying to know…

{waves again} glad you enjoyed Hellcursed! It was fun writing a short for once. Maybe more prequel action for future books, if I get the urge. There are always those ‘how characters met’ stories…

Stacy S asked: did you see “Jennifer’s Body?” It was a pretty decent film and she was a succubi.

Cool! No, I haven’t seen that one. Thanks for the tip!

Deana H asked: What instrument do you play? I am a percussion girl myself

I play oboe. Seemed like a good idea at the time… no, I love it! Both frustrating and rewarding.

Brenda asked: Do you think it’s easier or perhaps comes across more “realistic” to write about a place we know, rather than a place we have to research from scratch because we aren’t familiar with it?

{waves to a fellow outlining nerd!} I dunno about that. I’m often asked about this in relation to ‘foreign’ settings — my books are largely for a US audience, but set in Australia. I think that so long as the writer can make the setting come alive in the reader’s head, it doesn’t matter where it is. It helps to have that first-hand knowledge, but I don’t think it’s essential.

Elizabeth T asked: What are your biggest influences for your stories? And have you always wanted to be a writer?

I’ve always wanted to write. Being an author was one of those ‘oh, wouldn’t it be nice?’ things. Life is good :)

Influences? Hmm. Poppy Z Brite’s horror books, not for the horror content necessarily, but because s/he’s so fearless when it comes to exposing character. Stephen King, because he knows how to bring a character to life with just a few words. One day, I should like to be like them.

Great to see a Melbourne fantasy setting! I’ve been living there for three years, and it’s a fantastic place to set a novel. My own series is set in Sydney, where I went to school and university, but I’d love to try and write a Melbourne story at some point in the future! :)

I didn’t need any! The design people did such a wonderful job. I think I’ll just leave it to them in future :) And I always meant to read Wuthering Heights. Still haven’t got around to it.

Lisa Richards asked: You just won the dream vacation of your choice. Where would you go? Why? Who would go with you? What book would you bring with you? What would you make SURE you left behind?

I think I’d take me, Johnny Depp and IT by Stephen King to Tahiti. And I’d leave my cell phone behind :)

  85. Comment by Erica Hayes — October 21, 2009 @ 8:12 pm

Alicia H asked: Who is your favorite secondary character in your book? Which book do you think will be your fav?

I love all my secondary characters. I’m quite partial to Dante, the nasty vamp in SHADOWFAE, just because he’s so honest. But my favourite is Kane, Jade’s demon lord. Powerful and vulnerable at the same time. Fascinating. Favourite book? Oh, too hard! But I guess SHADOWFAE was the first, so I’ll always have a special place in my heart for that one.

Amy T asked: Who was your favourite childhood author? Where is your favorite place to go in the US?

I loved Enid Blyton when I was a kid. Famous Five, Malory Towers, Secret Seven… Those kids always had so much fun!

I’ve only ever been to Washington DC, and I had big fun at the Air and Space Museum. Next time, I’d love to see the Grand Canyon. We don’t have anything like that here.

Suzanne P asked: Was it hard to pick your genre of books?

I think the genre picked me ;) Honestly, beyond UF, paranormal/fantasy and sci-fi, I wouldn’t know what else to write. UF appeals to me because it’s real, and the characters have real problems, but there’s the added dark fantasy element to make it even more interesting.

Darchole asked: Are there any places you want to visit just so you can write about them later?

Budapest. Moscow. The moon. Everywhere :)

Kimberly B asked: Was it challenging for you to create a succubus character who was different from the other succubi out there? And if you had a chance to meet any of your characters in person, would you and who?

Trying to be different is always challenging, yes? I just started with the premise that it can’t all be good — I tried to imagine what the downside would be. The key I think was deciding Jade was human, not demon. Once I figured that out, it all made more sense.

A lot of my characters aren’t the kind of people you’d want to meet in real life… I think I’d like to meet Nyx, the air sprite from Shadowfae. A fun guy to hang out with!

Shaine K asked: when you’re writing do you have any rituals you do when you start? like listen to certain music, have a lucky charm or wear your lucky socks..lol. Also do you know where I can find Tim Tams here or are they just in Australia??

No rituals. Unless you count spending half the morning surfing the net! Usually when I get started I read through what I did yesterday and make a few tweaks, then I get onto the new stuff. Tim Tams… no, sorry. You can’t have any. They’re all mine ;)

Lesley Cheah asked: What kind of scenes do you have the hardest time writing e.g. love scenes, action scenes, etc. Has it always been this way? What did you do to overcome it?

I used to have a hard time with fight scenes, or any scene where the action has to happen fast. I always felt like they were too slow, and that not enough was happening. I was so fixated on emotional response, I didn’t realise that sometimes, you just have to let things happen. Now, I just write them the way I want, and give them a big old trim when I’m done! Biggest tip: when your least favourite kind of scene comes up, relax, and just write. You can always fix it later.

Kristin M asked: How do you stay focused when you are writing?

Turn off the internet ;) I also have a daily word goal that’s challenging, but not too hard. So I’m allowed to feel good about myself — and stop for the day — when I achieve it. Most of the time when I lose focus, it’s because I’m trying to work too hard, so it’s nice to have that achievable goal that lets me relax. If you aim for too much each day — and we’ve all got other things to do apart from writing, right? — then you’re just setting yourself up to fail.

Emma F Asked: I wanted to know if there was a difference between succubus and incubus?

Succubus is female, incubus is male. But they essentially do the same job — seduce you and send your soul to hell. At least, that’s what mine do. In traditional mythology, they used to go around seducing monks and impregnating nuns…

Bella F asked: how long on average does it take to finish a book? Do you already have a million stories in your head ready to go and just get finessed, or do you actually have to think, “what should i write”?

My outlines take about a month, and then I write the first draft in about 3 months. I’m not one of these people who can slam out a book in a few weeks, unfortunately :(

As for having a million stories in my head — I wish! I’m more of a thoughtful planner. Usually a character will capture my interest, and I’ll come up with a plot for him or her.

Megan H asked: How many times did you have to revise your story until you were happy with it?

Not too many :) Once I had the story figured out, the manuscript kinda wrote itself. For me, the outline is the part that involves the most agonising over plot details. Once I’ve figured that out, the rest is just craft.

Elie N asked: What is something your readers would be shocked to learn about you? How steamy is your book? The cover implies it is pretty hot!

Umm, yeah. It’s quite steamy ;) Being a succubus, Jade spends a lot of her time in sexual situations. But it’s all plot-relevant. I promise…

Something shocking… umm… I’m pretty tame, actually. All the racy parts are in the books!

Mariska Hadiens asked: describe your writing in 3 words. And, what’s your favorite quote(s)?

Tight, fresh and fearless. At least, that’s what I aim for!

Favourite quote: ‘Whether you think you can, or think you can’t, you’re right.’

  103. Comment by Erica Hayes — October 21, 2009 @ 11:14 pm

Nancy Gilliland asked: What is your biggest fear when writing?

That this story won’t be as good as the last one. And that I’ll lose my vocab and get boring. Hopefully, neither of those has happened yet!

Michele H asked: What is your favorite Halloween memory?

See, we don’t really do Halloween here. But I do remember going to one party dressed as a witch when I was a kid. I had the big pointy black hat and the plastic green fingers and everything!

Heidi Shafer asked: [aside from the TiddlyWiki] do you have any other ideas to help with outlining and researching?

Yeah — I’d say, don’t lock yourself in to one particular method on someone else’s recommendation. If something works for you, go with it. I like to work with goal-motivation-conflict charts and three-act structures, but some people just find them confusing.

For basic paranormal research, just to get some ideas to kick around, I like the website Monstropedia.

Aori H asked: I would like to ask if humor is something you are born with or a talent?

LOL! I don’t think I’m all that funny… I think I learned a lot of my alleged humor from my Dad. He says the maddest things and I don’t notice, because I’m used to him, but other people laugh their heads off. Most everyday things are kinda funny when you think about it — a guy like Jerry Seinfeld is so clever at pointing out the crazy things we do every day. That’s the kind of humor I like.

Seri asked: When you write a new scene, what is the first thing that comes to mind?

First, I decide what the purpose of the scene is, and when the scene should start: what is the PoV character doing and why? Then, it’s location and sensory details — what is s/he seeing, feeling, tasting, hearing, smelling, sensing with his/her paranormal powers? Not all of that stuff ends up on the page, but it helps put me there so I can begin.

Hi Erica - enjoyed meeting you at the NZ conference, looking forward to reading Shadowfae and am just off to read the website bit first. Hope it sells it’s socks off (though socks sounds far too pedestrian a word for one of your books).

Jennifer L asked: what would you consider to be the hardest part of getting published?

I think learning to write is the hardest part. Not just the novel itself, but synopses, queries… Just writing the story is not enough. You have to learn to sell the story to the markets that are available. And a lot of it is timing, which can be extremely frustrating. Persist. Don’t give up. Try new things. Don’t be afraid to rewrite if you’re not getting the response you want. And listen to any industry feedback you manage to get — if an agent or an editor goes to the trouble of making personalised comments, they are trying to help you. The most valuable piece of advice I ever got was from an agent who rejected my query, saying that the ms was too short. She was dead right :)

    2. I liked what Erica had to say about e-readers…that they will eventually have to be disposed of too. Think of all the e-readers in the landfills, never breaking down. At least books can be resold or passed on many times and then the paper can be recycled when the book is too far gone. (Can you tell? I’m not a big fan of e-readers!)

Tiah B asked: Have you always wanted to write in this genre?

I might not have known it the whole time, but yeah, I think we play well together, urban fantasy and I. UF has all the elements l like — romance, action, danger, adventure, magic — and I really enjoy writing powerful yet vulnerable heroines.

Stacey Smith asked: This is the first I heard of your books, do you have more books that you have written? Or are the Shadow Books your first books?

This is my first series. I’m brand new :) nice to meet you!

Nicky: there’s something so nice and juicy and round about Century Schoolbook…

Jo Mc asked: What is Jade’s favourite food? And, when you were a kid, what was your favourite fairytale?

{waves!} She never cared too much until now. These days, she’s rather partial to rogan josh. And I liked Aladdin and his Magic Lamp… do Arabian Nights count? Love those evil viziers ;)

Kirsty C asked: What is your favourite colour? (for all those Monty Python fans out there), and what is the name of the heroine of Book 3?

{waves again!} Ah, the long and involved saga of book #3’s heroine… I think Kirsty is making fun of me, oui? Book #3 is about a banshee, and her name is Mina. Yes. It is ;)

My favourite colour? Green… no! Blue! Aaahh…

Thanks so much to everyone for coming along to chat. I’m going offline for a while (bedtime!) but I’ll be back before the contest closes. I’m loving all the questions and comments. See you soon :)

Good morning again everyone! Thanks for coming by :)

Peggy G asked: What gave you the drive to write? Were you just jotting things down, did you always want to be a writer and what else did you do or want to be?

When I was a kid, I wanted to be an astronaut, but I’m hopeless at physics and have no hand-eye coordination to speak of :) I think I started writing because it’s solitary and creative, two things that suit my personality. And I love the technical aspects of writing as well as the creative. It’s just the perfect job for me!

Shell the Hockeyvampiress asked: what food gets your muse flowing? Also if you could live anywhere in the world that you haven’t ever been before to live for a year, where would you go?

Chocolate, of course! Or if I’m feeling a bit sorry for myself, a nice fat plate of pasta. Hmm… maybe I’d go to live in Spain. Somewhere on the Costa del Sol. Sun, sand, siestas…

Chris Swan asked: Any weird writing rituals you have? What is your least favorite genre?

I’m kinda boring, really. I just sit down and write. I do get upset if I don’t have my nice shiny iMac, though. I used to write on a laptop, but now I’m used to this Mac and when it’s in the shop I get quite vexed.

Least favourite genre? To read, that is? Probably ‘literary fiction’, though that’s not really a genre. I’m talking about the books where the writing is more important than the story, and not a whole lot actually happens. I prefer genre fiction on the whole.

tynga asked: OK so second book is a totally different story? We won’t see our succubus and incubus duo again?

Book #2 begins the night book #1 ends, and yes, the focus shifts to other characters. I do have another Jade story cooking away in the back of my head. Maybe one day…

Aori: I love Georgina Kincaid! She’s so sassy :) Another succubus series I like is Jackie Kessler’s series, beginning with Hell’s Belles. Jezebel is cool!

TerrieG asked: If you could meet anyone living or dead who might inspire your writing who would you pick? And, Who’s your favorite male paranormal hottie, your work or others, and why?

I’d like to meet Stephen King. He’s got it all. Long successful career, mixes genres, wonderful characterisation. A lot to be learned from picking his brains!

So many hot paranormal dudes, so little time… do I have to pick just one? On TV, I’m a fan of Eric from True Blood. He’s so calm and collected and dangerous. And I have a big girly crush on Quinn from Keri Arthur’s Riley Jenson books.

    Hi Erica
I adore SHADOWFAE. Blew me away completely. If this has been asked I apologise but I have to know
    1. How did you come up with some of those names? Vorenus Luna? Love it!
    2. Did these characters do a lap dance for you? Where did all this come from?

This storyline is out there and incredible and I can only applaud the entire book - cover and all. To die for.
Melbourne is my hometown. It is a beautiful city.
    You are pure brilliance woman!

Lo asked: How did you come up with some of those names? and, did these characters do a lap dance for you? Where did all this come from?

LOL! {waves} Sometimes, the names are hard work. Other times, they just spring out at me. Luna was a springer :) I wanted something vaguely Latin that didn’t date him to any particular time period.

I have an Ideas Jar under my bed. Little fairies crawl under there at night and slip things into it. Sometimes, it overflows ;) heh! Wouldn’t that be nice?
