A big welcome to our readers today! Be sure to read to the end of the interview to find out how to WIN the fabulous prizes being offered up.

PLEASE NOTE: This is not a fixed time event, the post just goes live at 10:30 am CDT. You can stop by any time during the day or evening and leave your questions and chat.

PLEASE KEEP SPOILERS TO A MINIMUM. Not all of the readers today have read P.C.’s books.

Interview:

Hi P.C.!

Welcome to Bitten by Books, we are excited to have you here today!

I would like to thank you taking the time to join us for the question and answer session with our readers. It has been very interesting to get to know more about you and what makes you tick as a writer! Readers, if you haven’t done so already please stop by and get your copy of P.C.’s newest book Tempted.

BBB: What are the most challenging and the most rewarding aspects of writing?

PCC: The most challenging aspect is probably the lack of control an author has over several aspects of her career. in most jobs you know going in what your basic paycheck will be, how you’ll be promoted, and the length of time you’ll need to put in before you can retire. Not so with the career of being an author! That can be scary, especially if you’re like me and support your family. Oklahoma public school teachers don’t make squat, but at least I knew exactly how much squat was and when it was coming in. So the lack of control over the security part is definitely a challenge. The rewards of being an author are worth the scariness, though. I like being my own boss, and working in my pjs is pretty cool, too. I love creating worlds and then populating them with characters I care about. As a longtime teacher, from a family of teachers, it’s important to me that I continue to serve as a role model for young people, specifically young women, and my books, especially the House of Night series, enable me to continue to do that. It also still gives me a major rush when I walk into a bookstore and see books by ME!

BBB: Do you consider different books paranormal romance or urban fantasy? and do you think it is important to distinguish between the two?

PCC: I’m from the old school point of view where I still see the genre line as sci-fi/fantasy. All those other distinctions feel like going through a lot of trouble arguing over what color birthday cake blue icing really is: Is it sky blue? Ocean blue? Sapphire blue? Turquoise blue? Who cares, let’s just eat the cake! I don’t ever think about the labels. From my first book I just decided to create the story I’d most want to read, and that meant, to me, writing in the fantasy genre. I added a modern heroine and some modern settings (urban fantasy?), and a healthy dose of sex (paranormal romance?), and that was that. When I buy books I’m the same way. I don’t care about genre labels and I grab anything and everything that sounds good to me. Right now I’m rereading Diana Gabaldon’s A BREATH OF SNOW AND ASHES so I can remember what’s going on when I dive into AN ECHO IN THE BONE. What the hell genre is she? Paranormal romance? Sci-fi/fantasy time travel? Historical fiction? Who cares? She’s awesome! And isn’t that what’s really important - telling an awesome story.

BBB: Is is difficult to collaborate with your daughter on the House of Night series and vice versa? And do you ever disagree on the way the book/series should go?

PCC: Nah, Kristin and I work easily together, probably because I’m the mom and The Boss of Her. (Side note to my daughter: KFC, do not post in here and disagree with me!!) Okay, seriously, Kristin and I brainstorm together before I start each book, but then I write it. During the initial writing process I rarely even talk to her about what’s going on with the plot, and she knows it’s going to change radically from what she and I initially discussed. We do disagree sometimes, but we’re on book seven, and by now we both understand that no matter what kind of agenda each of us has for Zoey and the rest of the gang, they’re going to end up doing whatever the hell they want to do anyway.

BBB: What is the most ridiculous thing that you have thought about doing to any of your characters but never did?

PCC: Well, I was going to kill off Grandma Redbird in UNTAMED and I mentioned that to a couple of my friends. They threatened me with severe bodily harm. Jeesh, they were really upset. So Grandma recovered from her nasty car accident.

Oh, in the original manuscript for GODDESS OF SPRING (my Goddess Summoning Series) I had my heroine thinking the hero, Hades, might be gay before he grabs her and passionately kisses her. My editor at the time, the amazing Christine Zika, called me and said, “Uh, PC, I know you think you’re being funny, BUT YOU’RE NOT. It’s not sexy to think the hero might be gay.” I pouted, but changed it. Retrospect says she was really, really right.

BBB: Which do you like better: the original covers for your goddess series, or the new ones? (Both are beautiful, by the way.)

PCC: The new covers are sexy and modern, but I’ll always absolutely love the original four covers. They were simply beautiful artwork. Actually, the original cover to GODDESS OF THE ROSE is my favorite of all my covers.

BBB: How do you keep track of your world building?

PCC: By tapping into my schizophrenic tendencies? Or rather, I use a lot of silly sticky notes all over my computers and I do word search clusters through old manuscripts to be sure I don’t mess stuff up. And the truth is that once I’ve created a world the rules just stick with me. I guess it shouldn’t be that simple, but it is. It’s like knowing the rules of this world. It’s not like you’re going to forget we can’t jump off a hill and fly, right? Same thing with my fictional worlds. Example: the vampyres in HoN can use magic, but it is nature or earth based, which means Zoey can call the element earth to her and have it channel through her and fill her with power from an ancient oak, but she can’t call earth to her and have that power allow her to zap that dorky Elliott kid into a mouse. Does that make sense?

BBB: What do you feel are the benefits of the new electronic readers such as Kindle 2 or Sony Digital Book Reader to the environment?

PCC: Well, obviously they save trees! I don’t really know much about them, but Kristin just ordered a Kindle to take with us on tour, so I’m going to check it out and see if I want to get one for myself.

BBB: What impact do electronic readers create on the bottom line for authors in the end? Do you feel they have a negative impact or positive, or no impact at all that you can see?

PCC: I think people will always buy books, real books. Even if I fall in love with Kristin’s Kindle and have to have one of my very own, I’ll still buy real books I can touch and smell and put on my bookshelf. I do think in this electronic age publishers have got to get a handle on e-book piracy, though.

BBB: Can you tell us about your different stories and the general storylines that drives them?

PCC: Well, I have the House of Night series. Book six, Tempted , will be released October 27th. All hell breaks loose for Zoey and the gang, and that’s what’s driving that plot - they have to save the world. In 12/10 my next Goddess Summoning Book will be released, GODDESS OF LEGEND. I’m co-authoring it with the very talented and funny Jill Monroe. It’s set in mythological Camelot, and giving Arthur a well deserved H.E.A. is driving that plot. For HarlequinTEEN I have two books in my Partholon fantasy series being released: Elphame’s Choice (out right now), and Brighid’s Quest (March 2010) - these are coming of age stories that are my brand of fantasy, which mean there’s romance thrown into the world. My DIVINE books for LUNA (DIVINE BY MISTAKE, DIVINE BY CHOICE, and DIVINE BY BLOOD) have also been reissued. They’re set in the past of the same world as Elphame and Brighid, but they’re definitely adult - fun and sex and adventure drives those books. And, of course, my contribution to the Nocturne Time Raiders series was released this month. What drives each of those books is a quest to save the world and time travel (and hot sex - they’re adult, too).

BBB: What else do you currently have in the works? When can we expect your next book?

PCC: Right now I’m working on BURNED, book seven in the House of Night. I’m not sure of the exact release date, but I imagine it’ll be summer/fall of 2010. Also in 2010 expect a very cool illustrated FLEDGING HANDBOOK 101. And, as I already mentioned, BRIGHID’S QUEST (March 2010, HarlequinTEEN). I’m planning on writing the third book in that series, CIARA’S DESTINY, too. Oh, and GODDESS OF LEGEND in Dec 2010. Jeesh, I’ve been busy…

BBB: Do you feel that centaurs are under-represented as love interests in the romance genre?

PCC: Absolutely! There could never be enough centaurs in romance! Man + horse = total hotness.

BBB: Have you and Kristin thought of writing another series together? Has writing together changed your relationship as mother-daughter at all?

PCC: Yep, we’ve already proposed another YA series to St. Martin’s, and they loved the idea. No vamps in it, but it is still paranormal. We get the question about whether working together has changed our relationship all the time. People have even asked, “Do you two really have a good relationship, or is this just your public persona?” (which utterly baffles us) Here’s the real deal: I’ve been a single parent a long time. Kristin and I have always been close. She saw me struggle through college and work three jobs to support us. She knows what it’s like to watch me worry about whether I can buy food for us and still pay the electric bill. All we had for a lot of years was each other, so we’ve always had each other’s back. From the time she started talking in complete sentences well before she was two, Kristin and I communicated easily. Nothing will ever change that. We love working together because we’ve always been close and we love and respect each other.

BBB: Where do you see the YA fantasy/urban fantasy genre headed? Can you see it slowing down in the near future, or do you think that the immediate future is pretty bright for it?

PCC: I don’t have a clue. I don’t even think about it. I think the bottom line is people will always want to read good stories, no matter the genre. I prefer to write with a paranormal/fantasy influence, so whether the perceived trend is for that to be hot or not, that’s what I’ll be writing.

BBB: How difficult is it to transition between co-authoring the House of Knight series with Kristin and writing your own stand alones?

PCC: Not at all. I think I’d published a little over a dozen books when I sold the House of Night series to St. Martin’s, so I was already an established author. The only difference with the HoN is that Kristin sees the manuscript before it goes to our editor. Usually no one reads my manuscripts before my editor(s).

BBB: How do the two of you navigate the actual story writing, e.g. do you pre-plot it all out, get the main details and pantz it, divide up chapters, etc.?

PCC: Like I said before, we brainstorm and then I write the book. I do make notes to Kristin directly in the text, especially when it comes to pop references. After I finish the manuscript I send it to Kristin, and she goes through it answering my notes and making comments of her own, then she sends it back to me and I go through it again before sending it to our editor at SMP. During the writing of Tempted I did call her and read an entire scene to her and asked whether I was making Aphrodite sound too old. She had me change a word or two, and that was that. Kristin really serves as teen editor - we don’t switch back and forth with the writing. That would make both of us crazy.

BBB: True Blood or The Vampire Diaries?

PCC: True Blood!!

BBB: Do you have any plans for book signings/ readings anytime soon? If so, where can our readers find you?

PCC: Kristin and I are going on tour starting with the live launch of Tempted on the Wendy Williams show October 27th. Here’s where we’ll be:

And then I’m going to disappear into the Scottish Highlands with my man for the rest of November.

BBB: Do you and Kristin get flack for leaving such big cliffhangers in the series? And is it deliberate or is it an editing decision to write the books that way?

PCC: Kristin and I stopped reading reviews a long time ago, and most readers who contact us are passing along positive comments. My outlook on life is that it’s healthier to focus on the positives and not give negative energy much attention. Luckily, I’ve never been the kind of woman who thinks she has to please everyone, so I pretty much ignore flack. But to conclude with cliffhangers is an editorial decision because they’re holding me to a word count, and I simply can’t complete more than one plot arch within those confines. I’d prefer to write huge books and only put one out every other year or so, but my publisher wants them broken up into smaller pieces.

BBB: You have two very different series going at the same time. Do you enjoy it when you get to “leave” one and then concentrate on the other? Or, do you write both at the same time?

PCC: Actually I have three publishers and have my fingers in four different series. I don’t find it difficult to move back and forth because the worlds are so different. It is fun to move from YA to adult. I like the variety it gives me. And I wish I could write different books at the same time! I can’t, though. I’ve tried and it just doesn’t work. I can be in the editorial process with one and be writing the draft of another, but that’s the best I can do. I’m just lucky that once I get focused in a book the writing goes pretty quickly. Of course sometimes it takes me two hundred pages to focus…sigh.

    Hello P.C. Cast!
I’ve been reading the house of night series for a very long time now. I’ve come to learn that Zoey was supposed to be like your daughter, Kristin, the 2nd writer of these seductive novels. I’ve always wanted to know, which character do you consider yourself most like?

My coworker and I were just saying how excited we are that Tempted is coming out next week. What started the whole process of ideas for the HoN series? I am so enraptured in the series. I have also just picked up elphame’s choice. Also are you coming anywhere near Philadelphia?

I started reading your series because of my 15 year old daughter. When I first picked up your novels, I noted that they are an ideal book for teens, but also have the ability to entertain adults as well. My question is regarding the characters. Are they designed by way of people you know? like Zoe’s Grandmother, Sylvia Redbird. With her Native American background, was much research needed, or was the character developed by first hand knowledge?

    Hi P.C. and Kristin,

I absolutely LOVE the HON series. Stark has become quite a pivital character in Zoey’s life (which I think is awesome!), but it certainly doesn’t help Eric’s situation. Now to the question…I actually just read Elphame’s Choice, and fell in love with it. How do you and Kristin come up with the ideas for all of these fabulous books? Do they just come to you? Or is it something else?

I’m wondering, though, how on earth did the collaberation between yourself and your daughter come about, Ms. Cast?

I’m not sure if I can ask more than two questions, but I’d like to use these questions instead!

If you could have Vampyre tattoos, what would they look like?
Also, what gave you the idea to make Vampyres have tattoos?
What gave you the impression that some humans, like the people of faith, would have an imprudent prejudice against Vampyres? Was it how shallow some of us can be?

Thank you, God bless, and I can’t wait to read tempted (NOV 27!!!) and burned (as I’ve heard it’s called from someone on youtube).

I’ve definitely enjoyed reading the HoN series (can’t wait for Tempted)and meeting you at the SMP party at RWA was simply terrific (actually mind blowing). For any readers who haven’t had the pleasure of meeting her in person–PC is as kind and clever as you would hope from reading her novels and interviews. If you can get to a signing and meet her, I’d definitely suggest you do.

I hope to see you at RT in Colubmus! It’ll be my first.

That was a great interview. I think you answered almost all of the questions I was going to ask.

    2. Your HoN books are so popular that all of them are checked out until further notice so my daughter and I just picked up book one. I am so excited to read it! So my question is: Is it weird having both young adults and adult approach you at signings? Do you have any funny or awkward stories you would like to share about a signing or appearance?

I just had to stop by and say how much I enjoyed your books. I am a grandmother of a 17 year old granddaughter and we absolutely adore your HoN series. I say them on sale at my local mega store and thought-what the heck, looks like a good read. I brought them home and OMG! I read the whole series in about three days time! I bought the series for my granddaughter for her birthday and she is hooked! She can’t wait for Tempted to come out! I am going to have to buy each of us a copy because she reads slower than I-LOL! My question is-are there any thoughts on a possible movie deal for your novels? It may be a “I can’t answer that question” question but they would really kick the Twilight series movies butt! Thanks for your gift of storytelling-you and Kristen rock!

Sorry guys - I got my communications antenna crossed and just now showed up here! Okay:

Sharon K - the hardest book was TEMPTED because I changed point of view from Zoey’s first person and added several other characters in 3rd person. I liked doing it, and it’s the way I’m writing the next book, BURNED, too, but it’s not easy.

Geetika - I’m most like Aphrodite (grin).

Sophie B - my inspiration comes from several places - research is a big one. Also I’ve been inspired by my high school students.

Geetika - I’m not sure who the best boyfriend is for Zoey yet because she’s too young to make a credible choice.

    Lyda - Phyllis Christine

Aurora - I think I like Zoey best because she’s flawed, but she has the ability to learn and grow from her mistakes.

Sophie B - in the HoN I’ve created the only matriarchal vampyre world I know I’m aware of - so female power sets it apart. I also portray teen realistically and try not to romanticize them too much. Hence Zoey’s boy problems!

Alison - in the summer of 2004 my agent asked me to consider writing a series set at a vampyre finishing school. I was teaching high school, so YA was a natural choice for me. That’s how the HoN began!

Nichole - yes, many of the characters are based on real people: Zoey, Erin, Shaunee, Heath, etc. Grandma Redbird is loosely based on my stepmom, though she isn’t of Native American heritage. Yes, I do a bunch of research, then I turn it all into PC World.

Kristin M - well, Kristin didn’t coauthor any of my other books with me, but I’m glad you enjoyed ELPHAME’S CHOICE! Basically I brainstorm and write the first draft of the HoN, and then Kristin serves as my teen voice editor. The ideas come from the cacophony in my mind.

    Stephanie - I really can’t choose a favorite!

Laura - When I write with Kristin the only real difference is that she sees the manuscript before my editor. She makes comments to me, and then I go through it and see which ones I want to include and which I want to veto. So I supposed the difference is I know she has my back before anyone else reads me.

Geetika - I suppose my tattoos would be Celtic knots. I got the idea for them from ancient goddess lore - often a High Priestess was marked in some way when she was chose to follow a goddess. And I got the idea for intolerance for those who are different from living in the bible belt…

Hi Shannon! Great to meet you, too!

Nikki B - yep, you’ll get a lot more of Aphrodite and Darius in TEMPTED and in BURNED. Promise.

Paige - Sometimes I plot, sometimes I don’t. It just depends on the book. For my Nocturne book, THE AVENGER, I plotted it all out before I started. I don’t do that with the HoN books, though I do have an idea of where I need to go in each book.

Nancy - Kristin has her own story in IMMORTAL: LOVE STORIES WITH BITE, and she’s working on another story of her own right now. It should be out next year in an anthology. Can’t remember the name of it, though…I’ll have to call and ask her!

Van - right now I’m reading the fabulous Diana Gabaldon. I love Christopher Moore, Ray Bradbury, Tanith Lee, Kresley Cole, Gena Showalter, Anne McCaffery, Wilbur Smith, Dean Koontz…the list goes on and on…

Christine - Kristin and I have always been close, so that’s nothing new for us. We do love it when we hear mothers and daughters read our series together.

Erin - Heath won’t get Marked.

Terri - yep, I’d love to write CIARA’S DESTINY (that’s set in Partholon).

Heather - well, I didn’t “switch” until late last year. I taught full time and wrote for three publishers for almost a decade. I don’t know what motivated me to write because I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember - there are stories inside my head that need to be told!

    Kaluca - Eric!!!

Heather - as a teacher, parent, and American I loath censorship and abhor book banning. I believe in the right for everyone to choose for themselves and their families what is appropriate for THEM, but not for me.

Uh, guys - I’m not going to answer plot spoilers.

Mindy - we love that our books are read by all different ages. I don’t really get why people think it’s weird adults read YA. A good story is a good story. So, no, for US it’s not awkward, but sometimes grandmas are embarrassed, which they don’t need to be.

Caitlin - the HoN has been optioned and the script is being written right now. That’s the only update I have.

    Rebecca - that’s what research told me. I haven’t tried it myself…

Cathy - I travel, I hang out with my friends, I walk my Scottie dogs, and I do love me some trash TV.

Lisa - I have a new fan page that has no friends limit.

Lindsay - we’re planning at least 12 books in the HoN series.

Raonaid - if you like vampyres, pick up MARKED. If not, try DIVINE BY MISTAKE or GODDESS OF THE ROSE (if you’re not a kid - those are definitely adult books).

Jessica - the weather has finally cleared up and it’s been beautiful here in Tulsa! Zoey will decide who she wants to be with when she’s mature enough to make that decision, and that’s NOT going to be while she’s a teenager.

Christina - yep, I picked out the models they used on the site.

Misty - check out my blog archives for all of my other books: http://www.pccast.blogspot.com

George the Girl - As I said in the interview, I don’t think much about genre. So, yes, good work transcends all of that labeling and such.

Deana - more difficult to write YA? Nah. Writing is hard. Period. No matter what age I’m writing for.

That’s it for now guys! I’ll check in later! Thanks for stopping by!

Hi!!! I stumbled upon your HoN books about a year ago and have absolutely loved them! I’m familiar with the Tulsa area so it’s cool how you tied that in. My question is where do you see the HoN series ending up? Do you have plans for more books after Hunted and Burned or will Burned be the final one? Either way I’m extremely excited.

First of all I just have to say how much I have enjoyed the HoN series. It is great to find a series that I can read and that both my daughter and daughter-in-law love also. We love discussing the characters and what might happen next. I get first shot at the new books as one girl is in college and the other in law school. My question–Could you tell us a little about the new YA series other than “no vamps but still paranormal”?

HI! I’m just about to turn 18 and I’m getting ready for college, but I’m having some trouble picking out where to go and what to major in. I live in Wisconsin. I want to be an author, and I’m currently writing my own book. I was wondering, where did you go to college and what did you major and minor in?
And which other authors do you read as inspiration? Have you read any of L.J. Smith’s vampire books, including the Vampire Diaries and her Night World series?

Thanks so much, hope to see you at your MN signing next week!

Ranna - they’re a lot different. HoN is a world of its own and is unlike any other. But you’ll find all of my books have a strong female empowerment theme.

Jeanette – authors rarely have a say in cover design, but our wonderful publisher does confer with us. We have an excellent team at St. Martin’s Press!

Laila – wow, that’s a hard question. I guess I’d have to say either Darius or Stark because the man I’m in love with is also a warrior.

Becky – I’m not sure about time span. That kinda just happens while I’m writing. My thought was that I’d follow Zoey for four years, but the books end up happening in a much shorter timeframe.

Tina J – yep, you’ll see in TEMPTED, but I’m following Stevie Rae with her own strong storyline. It does weave into Zoey’s though.

Amanda – I believe the world is filled with magic!

Emmad – I decided to use my initials when I was first published in 2001 because people have such a hard time spelling Phyllis. Kristin never considered using her initials when she joined me in publishing, although all of you Kristin/Kristen’s out there know people misspell your name all the time, too!

Kaylie – BURED is not the last book, but I can’t tell you where the series will end. Don’t know myself right now.

Lisa – ELPHAME’S CHOICE and BRIGHID’S QUEST are fantasy books set in my mythical world called Partholon – loosely based on Celtic mythology. The world is populated with centaurs and humans, who don’t always coexist well, and it is under the influence of the Celtic Goddess of Horses, Epona. There are vampiric creatures in this series, which I resurrected from the history of the Picts (Fomorians). They’re both coming of age stories for each heroine, and, yes, there is definitely romance.

Rachel – I went to college in Illinois and I majored in literature with a secondary education minor. I’ve already listed some of the authors I enjoy and, no, I haven’t read L.J. Smith. I don’t read YA at all when I’m writing it.

Heidi – yep, as I already said many of the kids, including Zoey, are based on real people. The school isn’t a college, it’s a high school. And I used the physical model of Cascia Hall High School here in Tulsa for the setting.

Raquel – nope, I don’t listen to music while I write. It’s too distracting.

Denise – I wrote my first book in first grade: Blubby the Blue Whale. Is hasn’t been published. Yet.

Elaine – In TEMPTED you’ll get Zoey’s first person pov, and then also get inside the heads of: Aphrodite, Stark, Heath, and a surprise character I won’t mention. And I’m writing BURNED the same way.

Nick – Well, I’d say work on the basics: grammar, punctuation, spelling, etc., before you worry about anything else. And no, being a writer isn’t easy. It’s the hardest job I’ve ever done.

Emily - I have a whole post dedicated to advice for aspiring authors in the archives of my blog, http://www.pccast.blogspot.com. My biggest piece of advice is to treat being an author like any other career. Take it seriously – without romanticizing it. Research publishing. Hone your craft. Read a lot and write a lot – and then read and write some more. I don’t know what inspired me to write. I can’t remember a time when I couldn’t read and when I didn’t want to be an author.

How are you choosing the actors to represent the characters from the books? I saw Zoey, I saw the “twins”, I couldn’t figure out which one was Damien, Erick or the old flame from highschool. I saw Nerfetie.

Heather R – thank you! What a lovely compliment!

Josefin – Zoey’s mom is my least favorite character. She needs to refocus on her children and turn back into a mother.

Nick – I will be in NYC on the 27th. Go to my blog and/or any of my sites for my tour schedule. Re: getting a book published – that’s something you need to research for yourself. Keep in mind you can’t actually do anything until you’ve completed an entire manuscript.

Joanna – check out my tour schedule. The closest we’re coming to Houston this time is Austin.

Michelle – sure! I’d love to write in the horror genre, and straight historical would be fun, too. Hell, I’d like to write a contemporary romance. Now to find the time…

Carly – the same advice I’d give to any other author. See above and my blog for specifics.

    Erin – I choose earth!

Meanmom – After the video you can click on a link that will take you to the musician and song. I haven’t really studied the video, so I can’t tell you for sure who all’s in it.

Christina K – I really don’t know who I’d want to portray my characters. They’re so clearly etched in my mind that I have a hard time seeing anyone else as them.

Linda and others – my HoN facebook page is at its limit for friends, but I have a PC Cast page you can join as my fan. Sorry about that!

ALSO: Guys, my tour schedule is posted on all my sites. It’s set and can’t be changed. Oh, and Kristin and I don’t choose where we go. Actually, we have nothing to do with it. My lovely publisher decides and we show up.

Caden – thanks! My webteam is awesome! Right now they’re rebuilding my PC Cast site, and I can’t wait for it to go live!

You’re going to Scotland??? Oh, I’m so jealous! Have fun!
I was wondering how you write about such a variety of creatures in the paranormal genre…is that difficult? Do you ever mix up your creatures and find your goddesses fleeing from the sun or craving blood or anything?
And also would you ever consider combining goddesses and vampires in a book or would that be too weird/confusing or just not appealing?

PC- I love the whole series for HoN along with how real Zoey is… she has been flawed girl who is just average with large responsiblity she grows into just like teens have to grow up into adulthood. I was just curious if it was Kristin or yourself that came up with the idea to combined vampires with the native american traditions? The series also was special to me also because my family and I lived in Oklahoma for 7 months and could identify several locations through the books. ( We lived in Seminole, OK)

Sticky notes and sexy scenes…my kind of woman. I haven’t had much spare time to read lately, but I like vampires and the paranormal, so what are some other authors you would say have characters similar to yours? Are your characters closer to supernatural or human-acting?

I liked the interview a lot and know it’s hard to write. I do short stories from beginning to end with just an idea in mind, so I get the non-plotting that you sometimes do. :)

Meghan – well, I taught high school for fifteen years, so I’d be a teacher. Again.

Josefin – Yes, Zoey is based on Kristin when she was her age and NO! Kristin does not have that many boyfriends (nor did she in high school). I used the basis of Kristin’s personality as a blueprint for Zoey and some of her idiosyncrasies, not her dating history.

Carly S – Thank you!! And I will relay your message to Kristin. Her new story will be in the next vampire anthology for Harper Teen.

Alejandra – our cover design team comes up with the covers after talking with Kristin and me. I do love them, and if you read the books you’ll clue in to the symbolism.

Jillian – I don’t mix up my characters because they’re fully formed by the time I write about them. And I do mix vamps and a goddess in the HoN books.

Biki – I usually read for pleasure. Using that to come up with a story idea would be verging on plagiarism, and I don’t do that. I do get inspiration from research and from mythology. I found the idea for GODDESS OF THE SEA during an art exhibit at the Philbrook Museum in Tulsa. I guess that’s kinda weird.

BlueMoon – my favorite character of all time is Shannon Parker in my DIVINE series because I’m closest to her. I think my favorite literary character right now is Jamie Frasier from Diana Gabaldon’s amazing series.

Rachel H – when it’s done and when I’m at deadline.

Monique – Kristin isn’t blogging today, but as I said before, she serves as my teen voice editor and cutter of too much description, etc. She likes her job. Sigh.

Diane S – writing mentor? Probably all the great authors I read as a child.

Shell – Kristin likes brown pop. I don’t avoid brand names. I just have the characters call them what they want to call them. I don’t munch on food while I write or I get fat.

Felipa – The HoN series are the only books Kristin and I have written together.

Laura – I added the Native American aspect.

Monique – yep, you will indeed be seeing Scottish legends/lore.

Samantha – I heart me some Stark and Heath. It’s a tie between them.

Seri – good question! I think I hear the scene and as the dialogue develops I add details. Hum…I’ve never really thought about it before!

REB – My characters aren’t like anyone else’s! And I’d say they’re more human than supernatural, even the ones who are paranormal.

Bella F – I think Kristin thinks of herself more as my partner and an editor, though she does work by herself (she’d much rather edit than write). Zoey has only Imprinted with one consort. It’s rare for a fledgling, but not so rare for a vamp. Only Nyx knows what drives an Imprint.

Libby – I’d invite my best friends, of course. Famous strangers? Nah. I’d go back to the 1920s and be a flapper in Tulsa!

Chris – I’m not fond of most “literature” (said with a bad British accent). The beginning is ALWAYS the hardest to write for me.

Koren – Kristin and I don’t bump heads. We communicate and then I make the final decision as I am the most experienced writer and I’M ACTUALLY WRITING THE BOOKS. But sometimes she’s right and she likes that a lot.

Along with are you by chance going to write more adult romance books either on your own or as a collaberation with others like K. Cole or G. Showalter??? I am about to get to read “The Avenger” through Harlequin books once I finish the book I am reading by J. R. Ward

PC Cast I love your books… You and a few of my other favorite vampire authors have inspired me to work towards becoming a writer! I currently am working on my own Vampire novel with a powerful female Heroine. I love the fact that you do have gays in your books and hope I can properly incorperate that into mine. What gives you the inspiration to bring in the Gays?

By the way Damien is totally like my gay friend Darius! Whenever I read I can’t help but think of him….I haven’t seen him in forever… He is gay and acts exactly like Damien… Not to mention his bf was exactly like Jack…They were so cute togethor!

You love Stark & Heath? Where’s the love for Erik? I keep pulling for him, even though they have a lot of obstacles. I guess I’ve always been fond of him because it seems from the beginning they were “meant for each other” especially him saying “I’m the guy for you” not once but twice (Marked pgs 192 & 193) I pick up on those things so I hope love for him is not left out.

After reading the interview I love you even more. You know what hard work is and you aren’t afraid of that. I like that about people.

So, I am a bit late and many of my questions have already been answered but her are two I didn’t see.

    2. What is your favorite way to unwind after a hard day of writing?

Melia – I can’t tell you why Erik’s not on the cover; that would be a plot spoiler. Yep, I am following different characters.

Laura – Twelve HoN books. I do hope to keep writing my adult books, but finding the time will be a problem. I heart me some K. Cole and G. Showalter, and am always willing to collaborate with girlfriends! (Again, it’s a time issue.)

Monique – I choose names in lots of different ways. Sometimes for meaning. Sometimes because they’re based on someone with that name, and sometimes just because I like the sound of the name. Kristin chose Zoey’s name.

Jacqui – I always think of Stark’s namesake, James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause when I think of him – that’s where my inspiration came from for him.

Josefin – you didn’t insult me (or Kristin), it was just a question. And, yes, I already answered your others.

Asila – I brought in gay kids because there are kids who are gay in high school.

Margay – As I said before, my relationship with Kristin has always been close – that hasn’t changed. And I do the writing, so I make the creative decisions, although I do consult with Kristin, and I value her opinion.

    Mich
