Character Interview, Chat and Contest with author Lynda Hilburn

*****

Bitten by Books is excited to welcome author Lynda Hilburn, Kismet Knight and Victoria Essex (two of her characters) today as our featured interview! They will be talking with you and answering questions. Check out the contest at the end of this post! You could win the amazing prize package they are offering up!

From the author: I asked Kismet Knight, the psychologist main character in my Kismet Knight, Vampire Psychologist series (book #1: The Vampire Shrink and book #2: Dark Harvest) and her friend, resident witch, Victoria Essex, to talk about some of their favorite things: Halloween, vampire males, magic and one particular immortal. Take it away ladies . . .

Victoria: Everyone wants to know more about Devereux – my boss and your highly significant other. Of course, since I work with him every night as his building manager and administrative assistant, I know how powerful and enticing he is. But even before he fell for you, I didn’t think of him in a sexual way.

Kismet: HA! Uh huh. Right.

Victoria: Well, okay. Maybe some parts of me thought of him that way once in a while – I’m not dead yet – but he signs my paychecks and I know better than to mix business with pleasure. What do you know about him that nobody else knows?

Kismet: Well, since you have a vampire lover, too, I’m sure you’re aware of their stamina. Devereux, being the considerate partner that he is, would just keep on going as long as I was enjoying myself. He’s the vampiric energizer bunny. I learned very quickly that there is such a thing as too many orgasms!

Victoria: Yes, that is an excellent vampire trait. Hmm. Too many orgasms? I don’t think my current companion can compete with Devereux in the quantity arena. Although his quality is right up there! But I’ll keep you posted. What else can you share about your personal blond god?

Kismet: He’s actually a very thoughtful guy – especially for a vampire. I counsel vampires, so I know that a lot of vampires spend their time planning their next meal and/or their next seduction. They don’t give much thought to the feelings or needs of their companions. Devereux has so many blood-donor volunteers that he never has to go without. Of course, it goes without saying that his days of seducing women are over! He seems to need me for some mystical reason he hasn’t shared yet, and I’m happy to donate a pint or two of the crimson elixir as part of our intimate connection. Who knew it was so arousing?

Victoria: You recently joined my coven and are learning to control and enhance your skills and abilities. What do you think about the experience so far?

Kismet: I spent most of my life trying not to have any unusual abilities. It was hard being different. I never fit in. But since I met you and the vampires, and I’ve found myself in several dangerous situations, I’ve decided it’s important for me to use anything I have at my disposal. My tendency is always to use my mind – my therapist skills – to try to solve problems, but the sorts of situations I’ve stumbled into with the undead have made me rethink all my coping mechanisms. I’m enjoying the coven. It’s strange to be a beginner at something again, but all the women have been very helpful – when they’re not making fun of me! It’s humbling to be around a witch as powerful as you.

Victoria: Stop! You’re embarrassing me. Actually, you’re around two powerful witches. Devereux doesn’t call himself a witch – he prefers wizard, like Merlin – but he’s had centuries to refine his craft. He was a spell caster long before he was turned into a vampire. He’s a force to be reckoned with, as if you didn’t know! And speaking of forces, Halloween/Samhain is my favorite holiday, a time outside of time, when the veil is thin between this world and the other. We’ll have to cast a very special spell this year. Something luscious for both of us.

Kismet: I heard that once you came into work covered with fur from a spell gone bad. Is that the strangest consequence of your magic?

Victoria: No. Not even close! My personal favorite is the time, when I was a young witch, I thought I was casting a spell to transform myself into the “perfect witch” – imagine Elizabeth Montgomery in Bewitched. Instead, I turned into the stereotypical hag: long, warty nose, straggly green hair, evil cackle – the whole witchy nightmare! It took my coven days to restore me to my normal self. Although, I wouldn’t have minded if they’d managed to reduce some of my voluptuous figure in the transformation!

Kismet: No way! You wouldn’t be nearly as gorgeous without your curves. I see the way men look at you.

Victoria: Look who’s talking! I think all that vampire blood you have ingested has enhanced your already-beautiful looks. Have you noticed any other differences since you drank both Devereux’s and Hallow’s blood?

Kismet: Definitely. I’m stronger. I have more energy – for all activities. And my intuition/psychic ability has grown. My fear is that there are some negative things I haven’t figured out yet. I’m glad I have you to help me. Maybe we can work some magic on my behalf on Samhain.

Victoria: You can count on me. Readers can find out a lot more about your time in the coven and the expansion of your abilities in the third book, BLOOD THERAPY, which will hopefully see the light of day soon.

Kismet and Victoria: Goodbye for now!

Here’s a little taste of Lynda’s upcoming book in her series, BLOOD THERAPY, book #3 in the Kismet Knight, Vampire Psychologist books:

“Denver Psychologist Kismet Knight counsels vampires. Her life changed forever when she discovered a preternatural underworld, met gorgeous Devereux, the powerful leader of a vampire coven, and was forced to rethink her notions of “reality.”

After surviving a frightening encounter with the most terrifying vampire on Earth, which included being held against her will and forced to drink his blood, Kismet realizes she needs help accepting and enhancing her natural – and unnatural – skills and abilities. She turns to her friend Victoria Essex, a high priestess, local witch and Devereux’s assistant for help and support. Kismet joins Victoria’s coven and begins her training as an apprentice priestess/witch.

As Victoria plans a huge Summer Solstice gathering for witches in the western USA, a special guest invites herself to the festivities. Ailith, a famous author and witch, comes to the celebration, bringing shocking news for Kismet. And for Devereux.

Turns out Devereux has more secrets than Kismet imagined, and it will take a trip through time to sort things out.”

i am so curious as to how authors know which ideas are good to pursue and which to scrap. do you get so far along in a story and decide it’s not working? If so, what’s the flag for “not working”… or do you take what you have down and make everything workable? i am so intrigued by the whole creative process. being a non-creative type, i have to live vicariously! :-)

Hi, Lisa: Thanks for stopping by! It’s great to be here at BBB!
I’m working on BLOOD THERAPY now, and will have to sell it when it’s finished. I’m also working on some other paranormals and am eager to jump back into the writing process. On my bedside table now are the “Dexter” books. There’s just something vampiric about everyone’s favorite serial killer. LOL.

Gabrielle J: Nice to meet you. You’ll love BBB. The first book in my series, THE VAMPIRE SHRINK, came out 10/07 and the second book, DARK HARVEST, 10/08. Thanks for participating

Dear Denise: I get inspiration from everywhere, but for the Vampire Psychologist books in particular, I borrow (and heavily disguise) situations in my psychotherapy practice. The first book was directly motivated by a session I had with a young client.

Hi, Raquel: Yes. The Vampire Psychologist series is my first series. I’ve written other stand-alones (which can also be turned into series). Thanks for stopping by!

Hey, Tawania: Nice to meet you! I hope you enjoy my books when you read them. Drop me a line to let me know what you think!

Dear Mindy S.: I tend to write things that I enjoy reading about. It made sense to me that vampires would have lives previous to becoming the undead, and some of them would have innate abilities that wouldn’t go away just because they’d transformed. I enjoy the notion of the vampires being able to move through thought. Thanks for stopping by!

Hi, Fallon! I do plan to write a psychological thriller or two at some point — or at least a psychological mystery. In the meantime, I’m brainstorming books based in the same world as the Vampire Psychologist books. I’ll call them the “Vampires in Denver series.”

Dave! Wonderful to see you here. Thanks for the kind words. Hopefully, I’ll see you this coming weekend in Denver at Mile Hi Con!

Hey, Heidi! I’m so glad you’re here. Wonderful that my book is going to be read by your book club. I hope you like it. My characters come from aspects of myself and composites of people I actually know. There are so many wonderful paranormal books, it’s impossible to pick one to recommend. Hi, Nancy. Great to meet you. I’m glad Dark Harvest is in your TBR pile! LOL about the training to be a vampire psychologist. I think it would definitely be on-the-job training! I’m still waiting for that special vampire to show up in my waiting room.

Patsy: Thank you so much for the sweet words and the wonderful support. I’m typing as fast as I can on the third one!!

Lesley: Kismet here. Lynda knows better than to try to steer us in directions we don’t want to go. Actually, we constantly surprise her with our choices and actions. She pretty much just runs along behind to keep up! LOL!

Moonsanity: Well, let’s just say I was “over 40.” I wrote nonfiction for most of my life prior to the last 6-7 years. The only things I had published when I was a teenager were newspaper articles. Fiction is much more fun! Thanks for stopping by!

Hi, Jeanette: Thanks for being willing to check out my books. I hope you enjoy them. Glad you dropped by!

Cecile! One of my favorite people in the world. Thanks for stopping by today. You’re always such a wonderful friend. I appreciate your nice words about my books. I’m madly working on BLOOD THERAPY! Hugs, my dear.

Seraphina: For me the process is clear. If I’m writing something that resonates for me, the words just flow. If I’m trying to force something to happen, and it really isn’t in alignment with my writing desires, everything comes to a screeching halt! I have lots of partially written stories. THE VAMPIRE SHRINK absolutely flowed without any hesitation. I guess that was because it was based on an aspect of myself and a situation that actually occurred in my psychotherapy office. Thanks for asking!

Hi, Elizabeth T: I never really thought about being an author. It wasn’t a conscious decision — not something I always wanted to do. First I focused on singing and wanted to be a rock star. I managed to work in various rock bands for years until I burned out on the bar scene. But all during that time I wrote. Switching to fiction a few years ago was the biggest turning point. Now I recommend to my psychotherapy clients that they write fiction as a way to build new neural pathways. It’s all good! My favorite book as a kid was Bram Stoker’s Dracula (much to my mother’s horror.)

Dear Amanda L: I was very inspired by Anne Rice’s vampire and witch books. Then later by so many of the paranormal romance authors I read. The greatest support I got as a writer came from the wonderful members of Colorado Romance Writers. They always bend over backwards to be helpful and I owe my first publication to their support and nagging. LOL.

I love these sorts of interviews. Lynda thanks for stopping by and bringing some of you characters. I will say this is a new series for me but one that I intend to read thanks to the lovely introduction by Kismet and Victoria.

Lynda, what do you find most challenging when you do interviews? Is it hard for you to talk about yourself or do you find it easier to let your characters do the talking?

Lynda where did you get the idea for “The Vampire Psycologist”????
It’s definitely an interesting twist and I would love to read this series. From what I’ve read above about Victoria and Kismet and your series you sound like an awesome writer and they’re definitely going on my TBR list.

Hi, Caitlin: I’m so glad you like the video. I think the production company did an awesome job. Thanks for stopping by!

Raelena: I hope you enjoy the books when you read them. Drop me a line and let me know!

Hey, Andrea: It’s nice to meet you. I hope you like my books! Thanks for commenting.

MarnieColette: Actually I love giving interviews. I do them every chance I get. Kismet often complains that I don’t let her do the interview often enough, so I’m trying to learn how to share. LOL.

Misty: The idea for Kismet’s world came from an actual session in my psychotherapy office. I went home that night, thinking how amazing it would be if a vampire [a gorgeous one] sat in my waiting room. So, since I hadn’t encountered one in real life yet, I went home and let my alter ego, Kismet, have the experience! I wrote nonfiction for years: articles about psychology, hypnotherapy, intuition, psychic abilities, metaphysics, expanded consciousness — things I enjoy. Writing fiction started in 2003. Thanks for dropping by!

Deana: I had originally planned the series to be unlimited. I’m still hoping that’s true. I’m also writing some books in the same world (Vampires in Denver), but with different characters. There’s no end to the possibilities!

Hi Lynda!!! Great interview and intro to the characters. It definitely has me wanting to learn more. I was wondering what first got you interested in writing urban fantasy?

For Kismet, why did you want to be a psychlogist?

For Victoria, I think it would be awesome to be a witch. Are there any drawbacks?

Hi, Heather! I’ve always enjoyed contemporary stories about extraordinary characters. Urban Fantasy has become associated with only physically acting [ass kicking] heroines, but it’s really much more diverse than that. And it’s easier for me to write about contemporary times! Not as much research. grin. Kismet just elbowed me out of the way so she could anwer your question. Why did I want to be a psychologist? Probably the same reason most people who work in the field are attracted. Initially, I wanted to understand myself better — to figure out if I was as weird as I thought I was. Then, over time, my interest generalized to everything about human emotions and behaviors. Most psych professionals are a little strange, I think. *wink* Hey, Victoria. Come on over here and answer your question. Hmmm. Are there any drawbacks to being a witch? Well, sometimes it isn’t easy dealing with peoples’ superstitions and fears about the unknown. There’s a lot of misinformation about witches out there. Once people get to know me they realize I’m as normal as anyone else (since there is no such thing as normal). It isn’t fun when a spell backfires and my hair falls out or something, but other than that, it’s a wonderful gift! Thanks for asking!

  43. Comment by Lynda Hilburn — October 19, 2009 @ 4:58 pm

Hi, Anna! Inspirations for my writing. Mostly my fanatic love of vampires and all things paranormal. Like Kismet, I have never been “normal” and long ago gave up trying to be. I have so many characters in my inner world, that I doubt if I’ll be able to get them all into stories! Yes! I’m a huge fan of Halloween/Samhain. It’s my favorite holiday of the year. I used to go all out when my son was young — decorating and dressing up — but now I tend to hunker down and appreciate the powerful vibe of the night. I try to do some ritual to honor the otherworldly aspects. All my memories of Halloween are wonderful. Thanks for stopping by and for spreading the word!!

Caroline J: I started writing THE VAMPIRE SHRINK because I thought it was so much fun to imagine myself as Kismet, finding the most delicious vampire in my waiting room. The words just poured out of me! I’m most partial to Kismet because she’s the most obvious self-reflection (except she’s younger, prettier, thinner and having MUCH more fun) of me. But I fantasize about Devereux. Sometimes in my dreams he stares into my eyes. Yikes. Did somebody turn the heat up?

Natasha: What do I love most about magic and vampires? That they’re outside the everyday. They’re extraordinary. I believe in magic and the more I focus on it, the more I attract into my life. I love having paranormal experiences. I’ve met lots of wannabe vampires, but nobody who has passed my intuitive test yet. But there’s always tomorrow . . .

Summer: I’m so happy you like my titles. THE VAMPIRE SHRINK was just a working title, I didn’t expect the publisher to keep it. Most people seem to like it. I think it sums things up nicely! I chose the title DIARY OF A NARCISSISTIC BLOODSUCKER because after I wrote the story, that was so clearly what Zara is! Totally self-absorbed. The universe revolves around her [ask her, she'll tell you!]. The most surprising thing I learned in writing my books is how much fun it is to make up stories about fantastical characters. Even the humans in my books are a little more than human. I think that reflects my desire to be special — to be larger than life. I wish I knew what makes a good story. It’s such a subjective/pesonal thing. For me, the story must have depth: character depth and story layers. I really enjoy knowing the characters’ inner worlds as well as their outer worlds. Thanks for coming by!

I like the witches and vampires combination. It sounds very interesting.

Would you want to be a real life Vampire Shrink? How do you incorporate your new-age qualifications best into your writing? I like that you can be a light worker who also writes about the dark. Good balance. I would love to win the hypnotherapy CDs. I could use help with insomnia and stress, and I’ve found that a soothing trancy voice can help me relax to sleep, especially after a little yoga. It’s kind of like getting read a bedtime story, like when you’re a kid.

Trying to friend you on FaceBook, but it was having an issue, so I’ll try again later.

Dear Raonaid: Nice to see you again! Yes, I know! I wish my books had come out in mass market size too. Maybe someday!!

Seri: Yay to going to school for psych! I’m glad my years of school are over but they were great while I was there. I do think about my characters. Especially if I’m down in the Denver area where Kismet has her office and Devereux has his club, “The Crypt.” Actually, The Crypt is based on a real club in Denver called The Church. Cool, old building! Thanks for stopping by.

Dear R.E.B.: Well, if I encountered real life vampires, the likelihood that they’d be amazing like my fictional vampires is very low. So, I probably wouldn’t want to work with them. I already don’t enjoy working with violent clients or predators. Vampires can be the quintessential predators. I think of myself as a nontraditional and traditional clinician. I just use whatever works, whether it is “normal” or unusual. I keep adding techniques and skills to my bag of tricks. I love that I can vent my shadow material through fictional stories. It just doesn’t get any better than that!

Dear Tamara: When I was a kid I was so weird I didn’t have to pretend. Seriously, I spent a lot of time hiding in closets, taking to others nobody else could see. My mother often talked to her dead relatives, so I thought that was normal. One aunt [dead] hung around with me from the time of her death at around age 14 for me, til I was in my mid-20s. I don’t know why she left then. Maybe she thought I was finally stable, or something. But I was a rabid vampire fan even as a kid. I went to all the Saturday matinees featuring vampire films and I kept taking Bram Stoker’s Dracula out of the library. The weirdness is still with me. LOL

Sharon K: I asked Kismet about giving up her practice and she is in agreement with me: No. As much as I love writing and as much as Kismet enjoys hanging out with gorgeous Devereux and being involved with vampire craziness, neither of us would give up our psych practices. I think we’re both interested in so many things that we wouldn’t want to give up any of them. There just needs to be more hours in the day!

Alicia H: My favorite secondary character in the book [besides Victoria] is Maxie. She and Kismet have some wild adventures in Dark Harvest. But I have to admit a fondness for the bad guy in that book, too. Thanks for asking!

Amy T: Hmmm. Who was my favorite childhood author? I was a fanatical reader as a kid. I think it was my sanity valve. My mother always tried to get me to read nurse books. She had a fantasy that I’d be a nurse. Well, my inclinations were a little stranger. I liked kid mysteries and stories about fantastic characters. I can’t remember an early author until I got to Bram Stoker. He qualifies as my fav.

Dina: Thanks for stopping by! I’m so glad you enjoyed Dark Harvest.

Dear Jillian: I have ghosts, psychics, witches, wizards and vampires in my books [along with humans]. I like to write about what I know and I don’t know much about werewolves or other wereanimals. I just can’t quite work up to thinking of zombies in any emotional/romantic/sexual way. But it’s possible a zombie could show up in a future book as a small character. I can’t help myself. I’m a vampire fanatic.

Hi, Carol: Thanks for commenting. I hope you enjoy my books.

Hey, Carmen: I’m so happy you enjoyed my books. That makes me very happy. Thanks for your kind support!

Julia: Yay! I’m so happy you liked THE VAMPIRE SHRINK. Thank you for ordering the second book. A song? Yikes. I’ll have to think about that and get back to you! There are so many great songs. Actually, a Whitesnake tune comes to mind: Still of the Night. David Coverdale really nails that one! My favorite book would be books, plural. I enjoy re-reading Anne Rice’s vampire books over and over and Laurell K. Hamilton’s series. Thanks for stopping by!

Hi, Bella. Hypnotherapy is a state of focused attention. Hyper awareness. It’s a creative distraction. Utilizing a trance state and then working with your active imagination to make the changes you desire can be very powerful. It works for behavioral things like smoking, and for healing childhood trauma. It’s really great. The CD is like having me sitting next to you as you lay on your bed with your eyes closed and your headphones on. Yes. I have been a psychic/tarot reader since I was a teenager. It really does help me therapeutically because I can utilize my 6th sense to help a client to heal and go forward. In a therapy session [unlike a psychic session] it’s my job to help the client find her/his own answers rather than me giving them. I’m so glad you liked my books!

Katie: I’m a fan of the dark and handsome, too. That’s why the “bad guy” in the second book is so multi-faceted. I really liked him, even though he’s definitely got problems!

Dear Shell the hockeyvampiress: What an excellently cool name! Kismet and Victoria get into arguments all the time. Every so often Kismet gets overwhelmed and burned out from being with vampires and ghosts and witches and she tries to hide from it all. Victoria is always the one who helps Kismet understand the newest weird thing and helps her maintain. In book 2, Victoria was very upset about the way Kismet was acting. But eventually she understood. Chocolate and Margaritas definitely keep my juices flowing! Thanks for stopping by!

Shaine: I didn’t have any say about my covers. The publisher asked for some general input, but the models were up to them. I think the guy on the cover of THE VAMPIRE SHRINK is just a stock photo that the art guy added long blond hair to. I can’t listen to music when I write. I’m a singer and it distracts me! Nice to meet you!

Emmad: Well, with my schedule, I probably wouldn’t have any pets. I’m afraid they’d feel abandoned because I’m not home a lot. But it would be freaky to have a panther [in a pretend world!} LOL

Renee: My writing friends at Colorado Romance Writers were my biggest support. I am so grateful to them for their kindness, education and nagging.

PamK: I hope the books are open ended. Kismet is limited only by my ability to type fast and sell the books. Thanks for stopping by!

Elie: Nice to meet you. Thanks for commenting!

Jackie: LOL! But imagine vampire orgasms! Kismet does have to get up and walk around the next morning!

Dear Elie N: What would people be shocked about? Maybe Kismet’s and Victoria’s unabashed pleasure in sexuality. For Lynda? Well, maybe the depth of my dark sense of humor. People often raise an eyebrow at me. LOL

Darchole: That’s a hard question. Because I wrote a lot then put that part aside and went in a new direction, then rethought using the first part! I never know where I am in the book! It depends on the day. Thanks for stopping by.

Iokijo: My usual taste is for men with dark hair, but Devereux absolutely insisted he have light blond hair. And I just couldn’t win the argument with him. He kept gazing at me with those blue-green eyes and I was putty in his hands, and his fangs. Kismet does have empathic abilities. That’s her strongest gift (like me). I think putting up walls is a form of resistance, and the more we resist, the greater the attraction to what we are yelling “NO!” at. Instead, I talk to students and clients about practing being grounded — being so filled up with positive, healthy energy that the positive overflows into her/his energy field. That’s a much healthier way to create a safe zone. Thanks for asking!

Dear Beverly: I can honestly say that my favorite scary story is the original Dracula. The idea of something formerly human lurking outside my window wanting to drain me dry scared the crappola out of me!

Hi, Stacey: Yes! That would be a handful of a job!! Thanks for stopping by.

Carol M: I love the J.D. Robb series, the Eve Dallas “Death” books. Not only are they excellent, but Roarke really rings my bell. I also enjoy Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series, Stephen White’s psychological mysteries and every single vampire book ever written. LOL! Kismet still tends to read psych textbooks. She has a very potent analytical aspect! I love all the versions of vampires and witches. As long as a story has character depth and plot layers, I’m all over it! Thanks for writing.

Hey, Lyda. Thanks for stopping by and for commenting. I hope you enjoy my books when you get around to reading them.
