As Dead to the World picks up a week after Club Dead left off, Sookie Stackhouse is dealing with something she has never had the misfortune to experience in her twenty-six years, the heartbreak that comes with breaking up. Bill, her vampire beau, betrayed her with his maker Lorna and though he wants to reconcile Sookie isn’t having any of it. As Bill heads to Peru to work on the vampire database (yes, she gave it back to him) that had already gotten him into a load of trouble that Sookie had been forced to rescue him from, Sookie is more then a bit ready to move on with her life. Of course, when she makes a wish and a resolution on New Year’s Eve to not get beaten up and to stay out of trouble, you know that decision and wish is going to be put in jeopardy in the coming year.

First, a only jeans clad man running down the side of the road turns out to be the memory stricken Sheriff of Area Five, Eric Northman. When Pam & Chow, Eric’s Seconds, come to get him and Jason breaks the news that there are wanted posters offering a reward for the supposedly ‘kidnapped’ Eric all over town, things start to get a little bit hinky. It seems that some badass witches had arrived in Shreveport and had been looking to take over some of the vampires’ business ventures when their leader Hollow had gotten the hots for Eric. One refusal and an overreaction later and you have a sweeter albeit rather scared and needy Eric. Of course Jason, Sookie’s oh so fabulous brother (cue sarcasm), finagles the vampires into paying Sookie to protect Eric while they figure out how to deal with the witches and get Eric un-cursed. When Jason disappears the next day without a single warning things really start to get strange and Sookie has to juggle finding her brother, protecting Eric, staving off witches, and dealing with more previously unknown supernatural beings, while feeble attempting to resist the temptation of the much nicer, not to mention flattering, Eric. Yep, nothing is ever easy for our girl Sookie.

The forth book in Charlaine Harris’s Southern Vampire Mysteries, Dead to the World continues the enthralling tale of Sookie Stackhouse and the intriguing mix of supernatural beings that seem unerringly drawn to her. A wonderful mix of humor, suspense, romance, danger, and adventure, Charlaine Harris definitely has a way with words as she combines believable characters and a unusual alternate reality that will leave you wanting more. Sookie is strong with a sense of self you don’t often see and though she has faults, she is always willing to go the extra mile if it means protecting her family, friends, loved ones, and not so loved ones, and is definitely one of my favorite protagonists in paranormal fiction to date. Her life is quite the wild ride and I always enjoy reading of it, though if anyone read books one and two in this series and thought Sookie & Bill were sure thing they have another thing coming to them, because nothing is a sure bet when Sookie’s around and she will always defy your expectations of her.
