Bring Your Cover Model To Work Day! Interview, Chat & Contest - CJ Hollenbach

Posted under Contests, Interviews by Site Hostess on Friday 16 October 2009 at 8:36 am

A big welcome to our readers today! Be sure to read to the end of the interview to find out how to WIN the fabulous prizes being offered up.

PLEASE NOTE: This is not a fixed time event, the post just goes live at 10:30 am CDT. You can stop by any time during the day or evening and leave your questions and chat.

Interview:

Hi CJ!

Welcome to Bitten by Books, we are excited to have you here today!

I would like to thank you taking the time to join us for the question and answer session with our readers. It has been FUN to get to know more about you and what makes you tick as a model!

BBB: “I have visions of someone stopping you on a busy street and asking if you’ve ever modeled? How did you get started in this wacky business? Was it happenstance? Serendipity?”

CJH: People tell me all the time that I should be a model. My answer to them depends on my mood. Nobody ever really believes that I’m a romance novel cover model. I have a hard time believing it myself a lot of the time. So, I usually just smile and thank the person. If they throw in the “You look like FABIO” comment I may tell them.

I started modeling after college. I would go to advertising agencies with my graphic design portfolio and for some reason they would think I was there for a modeling job. I wish I could say I was discovered in Schwab’s drugstore like Lana Turner, but I wasn’t…..

BBB: “What’s your day job and does it help/hinder your modeling?”

CJH: I’m really all over the map at the moment. I just started my own design company http://www.cjhdesigns.com Actually, my name in the business has helped get it started. Check it out.

BBB: “Why do you pose for romance covers? Are you building a modeling career? Acting career?”

CJH: I have had that romance novel cover model “look” for quite some time now. My hair is way too long for mainstream modeling anymore and that’s fine. I’d rather do a romance novel cover than pose for a tool catalogue any day! Yes, I have done that…and ads for JC Penney’s Father’s Day sales!

BBB: “Do people recognize you from your romance covers?”

CJH: Sometimes. The best part is when a stranger comes up and tells me they’ve seen someone that looks like me on the cover of a novel I’ve been on. It can be a tough sell convincing them it’s really ME. I mean, who would believe that? If they do end up believing me the conversation ends with “I have to call my mother now and tell her I met you!”

BBB: “What’s the most fun aspect of being a cover model?”

CJH: There are so many great aspects. Just still being able to do it after all these years is a blessing. Meeting the fans and conventions and book signings is also a perk. Seeing the finished cover is one of the best parts, though. I believe they are works of art.

And finally, the most important question…

BBB: “Does your significant other get jealous when readers lust over you?”

CJH: Anyone I’m dating has to “deal with it”. You can’t be insecure and date me. Just being with me in public if my hair is down is usually too much for some/most. LOL Self confidence is very sexy and hard to find….

Wow, do you have to spend much time on your hair or is it naturally beautiful?

Beautiful women are often stereotyped to be ditzy or dumb. Do you feel the same thing applies to beautiful men?

I get it now! Just answering your comments….It took a while for me to figure out WHY people especially in the media, thought I was a moron. I had a radio interview tell me I was a lot brighter than he’d thought I’d be. I guess with my bio they go for the stereotype. Now, I just tell them upfront “I’m not stupid! We can do an great interview if you want. It’s up to you!” I am one cover model who always gets judged by his cover…

The hair is what it is. I can’t believe I get so much attention over it. There aren;t too many guys out there with it this long anymore. I came dangerously close to cutting it all off yesterday. My hairdresser refused. In retrospect I am sort of glad she did.I use Matrix shampoo.

I don’t believe in pick-up lines. I think the eye contact is where you start. If they start with anything like “You’re so HOT!” I immediately get turned off for some reason. If you really want to kill it tell me I look like FABIO! LOL A nice hiar comment works sometimes too.

CJ thanks for visiting us today at BBB. As you probably figured out we here at BBB take our book reading serious, so my question for you is what do you like to read? Have you ever picked up a book where you are on the cover and read it? Better yet have you ever used that as a pick up line?

Modeling and design are completely different. One question I have never been asked. I really don’t know to be honest. Design is more creative, but I do LOVE to write as well…

They never let you keep the costumes. Too expensive. I like any character where I can show some skin, unless the costume is really elaborate and I’m having a “fat day”…

In college I was a fine arts major and started out in painting. I figured I might starve dong that and switched my major to design. Although, in retrospect I’m not so sure I would have starved. The design company was an opportunity was presented to me. It was too good to turn down.

I have read a few novels that have me on the cover. Women write from a different perspective than from a man. Go figure. It’s always interesting to see how they describe my character, especially in the sex scenes.

I think that is great CJ! Do you work in any other mediums? Paint or clay?

I think that it is really important to try NOT to judge a book by it’s cover in this day and age. We are all so diverse and interesting. If you over look something in a person because of their “package” then we miss out on the opportunity to learn, grow, change and be part of something in the big scheme of things.

    Hi CJ,
That “can’t believe it’s not butter” and “fat-day” comments were hysterical. I can vouch for long hair. People ask me all the time what I do to mine but mostly it is genetics. My question is: is there any specific author you’d love to be a cover model for?

All my cover shoots have been vastly different. ALL of them have been special for different reasons. Shooting with Lynn Sanders is always fun. She is so easy to work with and ends up painting the covers from the photos she’s taken herself. Double duty. Her last shoot with me was in Orlando. The pix came out great. Love her. We hope to be doing some more work together soon in Chicago.

Hi CJ. With all this talk about your hair (I get that a lot too) and writing, I have two questions. First what made you decide to grow your hair long in the beginning? (I know for me I feel naked without mine and so I usually keep it long. Losing it to a cancer scare years ago has just reaffirmed for me, I want it long.) Okay this is going to turn into more than two questions. Do you prefer long or short hair on women?

On the topic of writing, what do you write? And do you ever plan to publish your work?

Finally, I want to invite you and any other writers, bloggers or avid readers to check out Ember in Wrilogonzia - A Blog Opera that I launched today on http://cc-chronicles.blogspot.com. It’s an ongoing fantasy story, written in installments by whoever is brave enough to take up the next segment. We already have one blogger who has picked up the next one and hopefully many more will follow.

I’m sure it was your appearance on the cover of Golden Adonis that gave me two ‘5′ reviews for this novel. And thanks again for your own invaluable input, when I asked you about machines in gyms, and how men in gyms talk…. How would I’ve known that, if you hadn’t been willing to help me so generously.

    Thanks again — KATE

I like that you make art, too. I find that helps with the modeling.

Do you write anything where you would pose on the cover?

My hair is past my waist, but it sure can make a great modeling accessory. Somedays you do just want to cut it all off though.

It’s only natura. I work VERY hard for it. I sort of DO enjoy working out. It really relieves the stresses in life and it’s good for you!

I have been writing since I was in high school. I wrote about school event for the local newspaper. They paid me $15 for each article. I thought I was Hemmingway back in the day!
I’ve never taken a creative writing class. College term papers were always a breeze for me. My professors always said I wrote the most interesting papers and got a kick out of them, which I thought was great. But, I never entertained the idea of writing professionally.
I have written several articles for Romantib TImes Magazine and a few others. I DO have several books in me that are just dying to come out…or maybe I have indigestion. At any rate, I WILL be on the cover of whatever it is. Even if it’s a cook book! I have met a lot the authors on whose books I appear. They all have been gracious to me.

Please excuse my type-o’s. They usually want a smooth chest for a book cover. It just shows the muscle defintion and is easier to light. I am lucky(?) because I can have a hairy or smooth chest. I know a lot guys who can’t. Women love a hairy chest I have found.

I have never really been asked to pose in a way that made me feel uncomfortable. If you are uncomfortable about the pose it will show up in the photo. I have even suggested nudity for a certain shot. It can be beautiful. I usually can make suggestions to the photographer if they are willing to hear them. Sometimes, I just keep my big yap shut.

Back to the hair, I consider cutting it every day. It does get in the way a lot. (Use your imagination on that answer!) It comes in handy for cover modeling. It’s not a prerequisite, though. Although, I’ve met a million guys who think that’s all you need. Usually, you need some kind of chest going on. Most of the male models I know are my height. They just stand you on a box if they want you taller.
Speaking of Fabio, he IS tall. (He also wears 3 inch heeled boots, but you didn’t hear me write that!)I’ve met him several times and he has always been cordial. There was one time in Cleveland when I showed up at a mall where he was pushing his cologne. There was almost a riot with the 2 of us together. He just had this look on his face like “Pal, you can leave any time!!!” He blazed the trail for all of us. How many other male models can you name?

I am told I am very “intimidating.” I can sort of see why…sort of, but I never have seen myself the way others do. You have to have self-confidence to be with me. I have dated all shapes and sizes, colors.

    [Reply]

  94. Comment by CJ Hollenbach — October 16, 2009 @ 7:05 pm

Hey, FRANNY! I’d love to do one of your covers! Let me know! Actually, I do get recognized by people. I don’t look anything like a “cover model” in everyday life. I don’t wear a bag over my head or anything. My hair is usually under a “do-rag” or in a braid. Wearing it loose and flowing is just asking for trouble. Although, I do at RT conventions and the like. I love meeting the fans and taking pix with. One of the best parts of the job.

    [Reply]

  95. Comment by CJ Hollenbach — October 16, 2009 @ 7:09 pm

And, YES, I DO take the “Fabio” comparison as a compliment….I have a hairdresser I have been with for many year. She even said she would do my hair when I die. I told her if she goes first I’ll have to crawl in her casket with her. I don’t trust anyone else. She’s the one who just talked me out of cutting it yesterday.

  96. Comment by Shirley H — October 16, 2009 @ 7:11 pm

Thanks for being here CJ and congrats on your successes. I can see where the “intimidation” might come from. You portray a firey presence - maybe the strong jaw, regal nose, icey eyes? So you think good looks are something a person is born with or something that can acquired? Does a person’s outward appearance give clues to the inner person?

    [Reply]

  97. Comment by CJ Hollenbach — October 16, 2009 @ 7:13 pm

I probably would be marketable with short hair. Actually, I KNOW I would, but that can be so boring. Romance covers are works of art. I even made to the back cover of Jon Paul’s “Art Of Romance” book. He’s one the best cover artists out there. He said mine was one of his favorite book covers and it IS his mother’s favorite cover.
People were telling me for years I should try cover modeling and over night 8 years later, wah lah! I was in NYC doing it. I never give up on a dream.

    [Reply]

  98. Comment by darchole — October 16, 2009 @ 7:13 pm

This might has been asked already, with people obsessing over your hair, but why is your hair too long for mainstream modeling? Is short hair the only thing you can have for mainstream?

Weird side note, the longest hair I’ve seen (in person) was on a male professor at the university I work at. So long isn’t just for models.
