Pirate The Talking Dog, LIVE Today for Freaky Friday!
Ahoy maties and a big Bitten by Books welcome to NY Times best selling author Angie Fox and Pirate the talking dog!
Hi Rachel, I’m really excited to be here for National Talk Like a Pirate Day, because I have a very special Jack Russell Terrier with me, named Pirate, and we recently learned that he can talk.
Pirate: Well, I could always talk. See, the problem was, nobody used to listen. But now my owner has all these demon slaying powers and suddenly, bam, everybody’s listening. It’s like a doggie dream come true.
Angie: So what was the first thing you said to Lizzie?
Pirate: I asked her for the fettuccine from last week. Back of the fridge, to the left of the lettuce crisper, behind the mustard. But did I get it? No. She was too busy wigging out about my asking. I would have even settled for last night’s meat loaf, or even a few bacon bits. Those are always tasty.
Angie: What’s it like following Lizzie on her adventures?
Pirate: I’m a biker dog now. No kidding. I ride on a Harley, like all the other biker dogs. I ride with Lizzie in this black leather contraption that looked like she ordered it straight out of the Ozzy Osborne Pet Gear Catalog. But it fits. These days, I have the wind in my face, wind in my ears, wind all up in my –
Angie: Thank you, Pirate. So tell me more about yourself. What do you do for fun?
Pirate: Oh let’s see, there’s cat chasing, chipmunk chasing, ah…rabbit chasing. Oh and I help Lizzie’s new friends, the biker witches, make up big ‘ole batches of barbeque squirrel. I also help Lizzie by pointing out the bad guys and letting her rub my belly. You want to try?
Angie: Ah, yes, you have a very soft belly.
Pirate: And I’m cute too.
Angie: So, Pirate. Tell me. What’s the one thing you’d like to do that you haven’t done yet.
Pirate: That’s easy!
Angie: Non-food related.
Pirate: Oh. Well, let’s see. Excuse me while I walk in a few circles. Circles help me think. Hmm. I think I’d like to learn how to read. See what all those paranormal romances are about. There aren’t enough of them with dogs on the covers, but there’s plenty that look like mighty fine reading.
Thank you, Pirate. You’ve been great. You can visit Pirate on the pages of The Accidental Demon Slayer, in stores now. Or in The Dangerous Book for Demon Slayers, coming in May ’09.
Pirate: May? That’s a long time to wait.
Angie: Um. Yes. Well…
Pirate: I mean, what’s that in dog months? Like two years? Too bad I don’t know how to count or I’d tell you…
Readers, if you haven’t visited Angie and Pirate’s website check them out go here for the website and for their blog go here.
Questions and Contest: Now, I am going to open up the internet floor so to speak and let our readers ask some questions. Feel free to post as many questions or comments as you like. Pirate and Angie will be answering them at intervals the rest of the day.

Pirate, have you ever been in doggie love? Which breed(s) would you ever consider being with? I have two cute pugs who’d love to get to know you better!
Second question: What is your favorite pirate movie of all time?
[Reply]
I’m a talking giraffe who eats lots of cheese. Pirate do you wanna be friends? I can teach you to read.
[Reply]
Pirate - How do you restrain yourself from bitting all those annoying people that pat you on the head and say nice doggy? It drives me nuts just listening to them.
[Reply]
Pirate,
Do you have a favorite pastime, from before you were riding Harleys and learning to speak?

Hi Laura K! Why yes, I have been in doggie love. There was this poodle once. I watched her walk by my yard every day. I’d bark. She’d bark. It was a match made in heaven.
And pugs are very cute. I’d like to date a pug. Maybe take her to run around in this nice little field behind my house. There are even squirrels we can chase. I think squirrel chasing is a nice first date.
My favorite pirate movie has to be Pirates of the Carribean, although they needed more dogs in that movie.
[Reply]
Cindi - you have cheese? I’m all for that! We can be best friends if you share your cheese.
[Reply]
Oh now Marnie, see I like when people think I’m cute. Maybe I’m just a ham, but the patting on the head usually leads to tummy rubbing, and I’m all about tummy rubbing.
[Reply]
Hey pirate!
My gaggle of wiener dogs sends you greetings and a virtual butt sniff.
Glad to have you here today!
[Reply]
Oh yes, Rebekah. There’s squirrel chasing, rabbit chasing, bee chasing, fly chasing…
[Reply]
Oh hey. Now that’s nice, Rachel. Tell them thank you. I’m very flattered.
[Reply]
You do a lot of chasing Pirate, good dog, do you ever catch anything? And what do you do with what you catch?
BTW, there’s a wonderful dog on Discworld (by Terry Pratchett) who can also talk. Maybe you should see if you can contact him. Compare notes.
[Reply]
Catch? Oh gee. I don’t know about that. I’m sure if that ever happened, I’d be quite fierce.
I’ll have to check out Discworld. Sounds like that author knows how to include a dog in a story.
[Reply]
Hey Pirate!
I just found this site where you can find out what your real pirate name is.
Mine is:
Dread Pirate Flint
Like the famous Dread Pirate Roberts, you have a keen head for how to make a profit. Like the rock flint, you’re hard and sharp. But, also like flint, you’re easily chipped, and sparky. Arr!
Ye can find out yer Pirate name here
http://www.piratequiz.com/
[Reply]
Ahoy, Pirate! I was wondering if there might be a fantasy romance in your future? And who might be your ultimate fantasy canine-wench?
And when you growl, does it come out arrrrr?
Best of luck with your novel - it sounds like a lot of fun.
[Reply]
Hi Angie and Pirate!
Pirate, I have to ask. Does riding a motorcycle make the fleas less likely to try and land on you, or are they more likely to splatter into you as you ride?
Are there paranormal animals? Such as vampire dogs and cats?
[Reply]
Dearest Pirate,
After reading the book, I noticed you were very different from most of the talking-animal sidekicks around. Do you ever feel pressured to say something particularly witty or sage to blend in with them? Or are you content being her ever adorable security blanket?
[Reply]
Ahoy Pirate!
Where is the best place to store all of your pirate booty? Also, what is the greatest treasure in your life?
Thank you!
Arrrr!!
[Reply]
Just curious Pirate, why do you like riding the Harley and having alot of wind blowing in your face and if Lizzie blows in your face, you growl?
I have a Jack Russell named Willie and he sends you a big doggie bone greeting grrrrrrrrrr
[Reply]
Pirate I will share my cheese with you. Oh boy now we are best friends. *G*
[Reply]
Pirate, when is your mistress going to buy you your own chaps and bandanna? How else can a lean, mean demon hunting biker dog suppose to go into battle to help his mistress without the proper gear? BTW, tell her not to forget the napkins when the witches decide to have Roadkill Thursdays.
[Reply]
I had to get my pirate name. Thanks Rachel!
Mad Ethel Bonney
Every pirate is a little bit crazy. You, though, are more than just a little bit. You can be a little bit unpredictable, but a pirate’s life is far from full of certainties, so that fits in pretty well. Arr!

[...] Pirate the Talking Dog over at Bitten by Books. [...]
Pirate, how many hours a day do you spend sleeping?
[Reply]
Okay, first things last…..
Ummm, or something like that…my Mom said i could type this up if i was very, very careful about it….and did not drool on the keyboard (again.)
She posted a link sausage on this thing: http://www.new.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1001236642&ref=name and said that was a good thing. I agree. Sharing link sausages with the world is always a good thing.
Oh, she is saying I should tell you, Pirate, that my name is Tani & that I should telly ou I’m a rescue doggie. Yep, my Mom picked me from all the other doggies at the Humane Society & now I get to play int he yard & chase cats n the house & eat bacon treats & ice cubes….Have you tried ice cubes, Pirate? you GOTTA try the ice cubes! So chewy, good for the teeth & my Mom says no caws….oh, wait, I think she said calories….what’s a calorie?
Oh, wait, does that count as my question? Darn!
So, ummm, oh and she said I could tell you her Pirate name from some other sausage was Bloody Ginny Galapagos….she liked it better than Captain Anna, which is what she got on the other sausage; maybe it was turkey sausage?
So, ummm, yeah, welllllll……what’s your favorite position? (Oh, man, my Mom just snorted Coke through her nose? I wonder why? Now she’s mumbling something about “doggie position”??? Moms are so weird sometimes….) Yeah, so anyway, what’s your fave position for nap time?
Okay, Mom is saying I have to get off the computer, now. So, well, yeah, I really, really liked talking to you, Pirate. You’re the coolest dog in print since Jim. (Have you met Jim? In the Aisling Grey books? He’s not REALLY a dog, he’s a demon, but he’s like, shaped like a Newfie! He’s huge! And me, I’m all black, too, like him, and very furry, but I’m only about 10 pounds and Mom says they crossed a Pop & a Chow to get me….does that mean a cheerleader was feeding for chow time?)
Hugs & Droolie kisses!
Tani
(and her Mom, Justine)
[Reply]
Hey Rachel. I’m no longer Pirate. I’m Iron Jack Bonney. Arrrrgh…arf!
[Reply]
I’d love to find a nice pug or a poodle to settle down with, but so far, that hasn’t happened. I don’t know what’s up with that. I roll in all kinds of things that smell nice. I sniff as good as the next dog. I just don’t know. Guess it’s not in the cards yet.
[Reply]
Hi Virginia, I’ve never had fleas. Lizzie keeps sending me to this doggie spa where they make me all stinky. You don’t even want to imagine the rolling I have to do in her garden to get rid of that smell.
I’ve never met any paranormal dogs or cats yet. That’s a bit frightening to tell you the truth. Me? I’m just a plain old dog and I like it that way.
[Reply]
Hi Jackie. Will you rub my belly?
Now what was the question? Oh yeah. Those other talking animals who are all sage and say the right things and such. See, I’m not there to tell anybody what to think, unless it involves them sharing their hot dog, or perhaps letting me close for a quick snuggle. I’m a dog and I like it that way.
[Reply]
And pirate booty? I’m sitting on my Pirate booty.
[Reply]
Hey Willie! I must say, Joye, you have amazing taste in dogs.
Willie and I have discussed your question at length and really, we think it’s a matter of respect. Don’t go blowing at a dog and expect us to think it’s the freeway at noon. We want the window and the open road.
[Reply]
Say, that’s good eating, Cindi. Thanks!
And I’d be glad to share my barbequed squirrel with you.
[Reply]
Why thank you for noticing, Audrey. I do need my own chaps and bandanna. You know I don’t even have doggie motorcycle glasses yet? Now how am I supposed to ride like that?
And just talk of Roadkill Thursdays has me drooling. Where are those napkins?
[Reply]
Rachel wants to know how many hours a day I spend sleeping? Well, that’s difficult because I can’t count. But you know I like my beauty rest.
[Reply]
Oh, oh, oh!!!
If this works, Pirate, you can see me, too!
Do you think I’m cute? (Mom says if it doens’t work, you can see me on that sausage link she had me add up above in her pictures file)
Tani (and Justine)
[Reply]
Well, I put that hot dog code (what Mom? Oh, she says it’s HTML code….sounds like hot dogs would be better) in the message before but nothing showed up.
Trust me, I’m adorable.
http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh275/FairyFindings/DSCN1264.jpg check this link to see for yourself. Oh, your mom can look, too.
Tani again
[Reply]
Pirate (and Tani
What do you think of loldogs, the sister site to lolcatz?
[Reply]
Hi Tani! You mean we’re not supposed to drool on the keyboard? Whoops. That’ll rub right off, won’t it?
I’m a rescue dog too. I came from the Paws for Adoption Rescue event at the mall. I like ice cubes too, and turkey sausage, and ham and everything but peas. I don’t do peas.
My favorite position for nap time is on my back with my feet in the air. Soooo relaxing.
And I think that’s nice that one of your breeds is named after dog chow. That’s my second favorite food after people food.
[Reply]
Well, Virginia (there really is a Sandy Claws….sorry, Mom made me do it) I like lol things…they make me smile, and sometimes drool…. but I can’t get my Mom to let me surf it for tooooo long. She says i get ideas….what does that mean?
Tani
[Reply]
Say, Tani, you are pretty. Sometimes, I wish I had black fur. Like when we’re chasing the bad guys. Speaking of chasing, how about we head out after some squirrels?
[Reply]
loldogs is great. Any site dedicated to dogs works for me.
[Reply]
I say any site dedicated to dogs is a good thing. Cats? I’m not so sure about that.

Hey Pirate…. This is Capt’n FancyPants, AKA Cindy Mac…. Anyway I am the mom of 4 kids a dog (she is a snazzy cockapoo, 2 cats, and a fish) The question I have is when you are fighting demons with your mistress, and you bite them does their blood taste icky or anything like that…..
By the way, there are some really great places to go riding out here is Kansas and the wind always blows, Zoe loves it when her big floppy ears blow in the wind… I live on historic Ft. Riley and now here comes the second question, have you ever encountered a ghost???? I know my little Zoe has, we have one that lives right here in the house and he has fun playing with the cats and Zoe….
Thanks for the time and keep up the great work that you do. It was nice talking with ya and Zoe thinks the picture of you is hot hot hot…
She thinks your better looking than the Husky next door…
Cindy Mac Capt’n Fancypants….
[Reply]
Pirate, on the issue of neutering where do you stand? Who would you rather belong to? Sarah Palin or Tina Fey? If you couldn’t stay with Lizzie that is.
[Reply]
Yarrr! I be Kathy/ Mad Bess Kidd. I’m owned by two Jack Russells who go by the names Kirby and Kacie(yes my family prefers alliterative names).
Kirby wants to know if you ever want to chase motorcycles instead of riding them? And Kacie wants to know if she can go for a ride with you one day? I will only let her go though if you both promise to wear helmets.
[Reply]
Hiya, Trudy. I’m only 3, but don’t let that fool you. I’ve seen plenty of the world.
[Reply]
Well, please tell Zoe thanks. We Jack Russells are a handsome breed. Cockapoos too. I have a thing for ladies with curls.
Now Lizzie hasn’t actually let me near a demon, if you can believe that. I don’t know why, because I’m fierce. I could whoop a demon. Heck, I could whoop ten demons. Feel free to tell Zoe that, too.
As far as ghosts go, I love ghosts! I make friends with one in the next Demon Slayer book. He teaches me how to play scrabble and everything.
[Reply]
Oh let’s not even talk about neutering. That whole issue makes my tail curl under.
I’m not familiar with Sarah Palin or Tina Fey, but if I had to be owned by somebody famous, I’d pick the Jack in the Box man, or possibly Ronald McDonald.
[Reply]
Well, hey, give a sniff to Kirby and Kacie for me. I do like chasing motorcycles. Almost caught one once. And sure Kacie can ride. What’d I tell you? The ladies dig dogs on bikes.
[Reply]
Hey Pirate, do you think Lizzie with let you have a friend to live with you. JUST friends.
[Reply]
Thanks for the info Pirate, Gotta let ya know Zoe really thinks that you should come out and play with the ghost in this house… He loves animals apparently and plays ball with her when my hubby is not home… for some reason he just does not like men, kids are ok but men are a no no… I plan on going out and buying to book to read to her so she can hear all about your exploits with Lizzie… And a ghost that can teach you scrabble is something I am looking forward to hearing about….
Thank you so much for your time here today hope that Lizzie lets you go out and kick some demon butt now…….
Cindy Mac Aka Capt’n FancyPants….
[Reply]
Hey Priate, How did you learn to talk, and why did you start talking now? What inspired you to start talking now (allow us to know you talked)?
[Reply]
hiya pirate, which all pirates of old have you used as your hero?
[Reply]
o dont enter me for the book, i have and LOVED!!!!! but would love to be enter for goodies
[Reply]
Hey, Pirate! Oh, Mom says Hi to Lizzie & that other lady, too….
Tani, here. Mom went shopping & took away the keyboard while she was gone. She muttered something about the last time I went on Ebay & she ended up with that huge box of squeek toys….anyway…..
Thanks! I love my black fur. Mom tries to brush it, but I try to eat the brush. It’s a fun game. Do you like grooming? I’d rather play.
Barking about playing….we live in Florida, near 2 beaches. You should do the dog whistle thing if you’re ever in our area. Have you ever gotten to chase waves? And crabs….they run sideways! Seriously!
Neutering? that was soooo not fun! They shaved me. Can you believe it??? Tooka few months to grow back. But I showed them; I shedded all over EVERYTHING for a month. Do you shed much? Mom says I breed dust bunnies from Hades….
Mom says I should telly ou she has that book you’re in & she’s going to read it to me, next. She had to read this dragon book called Eragon for work. She’s getting ready to go to work, now, for a Brisingr midnight party. She says she’s taking the keyboard with her, too, so this is my last chance to chat, tonight.
Have you ever met any dragons? If you do, ask them if they prefer crispy or deep fried….
Gotta go, now. I’m so glad you came by B3 & talked, today! You can come bark up my tree any time you want to!
Tani
[Reply]
Glad I’m not too late to say : Love ya, Pirate! Your first adventure was great and I can’t wait to see what you get into in the next one. Have you thought about the possibility of little Pirates? If you find the love of your life and have babies, I’d be glad to have one to love and cherish. (PS…don’t enter me in the contest.)
[Reply]
Hey Pirate,
Why exactly do dogs sniff each others rears? And why isn’t it just limited to dogs. I have a dog who’s constantly following the cat around trying to sniff his rear. This gets the cat quite upset but being unable to speak either canine or feline I can’t exactly explain to each other the behavior that each exhibit especially when I can’t quite explain it myself.
[Reply]
Pirate ~ What handsome man you are. Lucy girl says hello. She is a slim chiuaua with an attitude. Max, her side kick wont say anything. Between you and me, I think he is jealous. Has that ever happened to you Pirate? It is tough being so cute, I know.
Here is my off the wall question. If you choke a smurf, what color does it turn? I am thinking purple.
Katie
[Reply]
Another dog? What? I’m not doing my job?
[Reply]
I’d love to hang with Zoe. And ghosts who play with dogs are the best. I hope that wasn’t a spoiler on the second Demon Slayer book, but really, Lizzie thought she could lock me up in a hotel room and go off on her adventures? I’m so glad we ended up in a haunted hotel. 90210 reruns can get old after awhile.
[Reply]
Hiya Lexee. It wasn’t my choice to start talking to Lizzie. I mean I’ve been trying to talk to folks for years. The problem with America today is not enough people listen to their animals. We have lots to say. Thanks to Lizzie’s demon slayer powers, she can hear me now. Most of the time, I think she likes it.
[Reply]
Hi Tami. You liked my book? That’s great. Want to scratch my belly? I’ll thump my tail on the floor if you do.
I don’t know much about pirates of old. I think Lizzie named me for the patch of brown fur arond my one eye. Or because I’m a tough as nails, take no prisoners, mega action dog.
[Reply]
Hi Tani. If your mom takes the keyboard, feel free to pick up the phone. It’s tricky to do it without opposable thumbs, but possible. Long distance can’t be that expensive, right? Besides, most folks don’t know we can talk, so your mom will never suspect.
I’ve never gotten to chase waves. We were from Atlanta, ’till we hit the road with the biker witches. Maybe we’ll go soon.
I don’t even want to think about neutering.
Tell your mom to read my parts twice. I’m quite heroic.
I have not met a dragon, but the way my life is going lately, I wouldn’t rule it out. I wonder if they like being chased.
Sleep tight, Tani!
[Reply]
Thanks, Shirley. Glad you liked the book. Both Pirate and I had a blast with The Accidental Demon Slayer.
[Reply]
Excuse me while I stop laughing, Helen. That is a problem. Why do dogs sniff rears? Because we can.
And about your cat/dog sniffing issue…want me to come over and talk to them?
[Reply]
Hi Katie! I don’t know if I’d choke a smurf, but I’d eat a smurf.
Tell Lucy girl to come by the next Red Skulls barbeque. I’ll show her how to chase ping pong balls.
[Reply]
I was wondering if Pirate had heard of Doggles (http://doggles.com/doggles.html) goggles?…they might be good for all that Harley riding
[Reply]
Justine, here…..Thanks for entertaining Tani, today. She’s all swashed out from the good buckling on Pirate Day.
Oh, and I am already loving the book.
Thanks, Angie!
Justine
[Reply]
Aren’t Doggles cute? A lot of the Harley dogs I’ve met wear them. I havn’t put them in a book yet, but I think I’m going to have to do that. They’re just too funny.
[Reply]
LOL No Problem, Justine. Pirate had a ball with Tani. Glad to hear you’re having fun with the book. The Accidental Demon Slayer was a kick to write.
[Reply]
So Pirate…Every pooch has a vision of doggie heaven…Please describe what you hope it will be like
[Reply]
Pirate, what do you do for a night on the town?
[Reply]
OK Pirate, my grandkids want to know (they are 6 and 4) if you have a girlfriend? LOL
[Reply]
Hi Angie, I was wondering… have you always had a dog in your life?
Hi Pirate! Now that Lizzie can understand you, is there something you want to tell her “I told you so” about?
[Reply]
From Helen: That’s about the cutest picture of a dog I’ve ever seen.
From Ruffles: Can you scare away deer? I can. Or I used to anyway. I’d chase them from my front yard. Then they got to where they didn’t run, but just flinched. Now we just have staring contests. But I bet you could scare them. Rabbits still run from me. I’m bigger than most of them.
[Reply]
Doggie heaven? Hmmm…well, that’d be plenty of good eats, lots of other dogs to sniff and Lizzie to rub my belly.
[Reply]
For a night on the town, I like to hit the Harley biker bars. There’s lots of people to feed me popcorn and penuts, and sometimes they even let me dance on the bar.
[Reply]
Do your grandkids want to play? I always want to play. And there’s no other dog in my life right now. I’m always looking.
[Reply]
Angie here:
I have always had a dog in my life. And every one of them has given me a look where I swear I know what he’s thinking. That’s the fun of Pirate - I can give words to those doggie looks.
[Reply]
Have I ever wanted to tell Lizzie “I told you so.”? Heck yeah. Like when she dated non-dog people. I knew she shouldn’t be hanging out with no guy that can’t stop and throw a ball around the yard. Or the guys who didn’t slip me any pizza under the table.
[Reply]
A deer? I’d love to chase a deer. But I don’t know what I’d do if the deer didn’t run. That’s just not right, Ruffles. I’m glad the rabbits are still running. Those are fun.
