Character Interview, Chat and Contest with author Cinsearae Santiago
Bitten by Books is excited to welcome author Cinsearae Santiago and Jonathan (one of her characters) today as our featured interview! They will be talking with you and answering questions. Check out the contest at the end of this post! You could win the amazing prizes they are offering up!
CS: I’d like to welcome Jonathan Gianni as a guest here with me on BBB. Hi Jonathan!
JG: *Rushing in with a bag of Cheetos and sitting down* Hey. Did I make it?
CS: Um, barely, but I think we can excuse it. Tell us a bit about yourself now that you’re here.
JG: *Chomping away on his Cheetos*
CS: Kiddo, you’re pretty much ‘live’ right about now….
JG: Crap! Sorry! *Shoving bag under his chair* Um…I don’t really like to talk about myself.
CS: Hey, you WANTED to do this, so talk, dammit!
JG: Um…I like computers a lot. I like to do RPGs with friends online. Um….I like carnivals…I have a blog (http://kieraandjonathan.webs.com) ….I have a pet hamster…and I love Halloween….
CS: Excellent! We can talk more about that!
JG: Whew! Cool. What would ya like to know?
CS: Exactly what on earth possessed you to wish for everyday to be Halloween?
JG: Oh…um…It wasn’t really my fault! Honest! It was that stupid demon’s fault! I didn’t know I’d get tricked into it!
CS: Okay, I’m NOT gonna go there….I’m glad things got taken care of concerning THAT, but still…what is it about Halloween you love so much–besides the candy?
JG: Well, for me, it’s just a chance to play dress up and be somebody I’m not, know what I mean? And Halloween is just COOL!! I love going into Halloween stores, and seeing people’s houses decorated all creepy. And the pumpkins, and hayrides…and there’s this energy in the air…kinda mysterious and invigorating, at least for me.
CS: Don’t worry, there’s a lot of folks who love Halloween too, but I don’t think they love it that much that they’d want it to stay that way EVERYDAY…
JG: *shifting uncomfortably in his seat* Um…well, I like the strange and unusual! Real life is boring. Real life sucks! Seeing someone walk around with a pumpkin head would be WAY more amusing than just seeing a regular person, ya know?
CS: Ah…no.
JG: How about a talking skull-head instead? Or a dinosaur head?
CS: Jonathan…please.
JG: *sighing* How about kool aid-colored cats for Halloween?
CS: You’re pushing it, kiddo.
JG: *Slouching* Well, I wish folks could celebrate it for the whole month, at least!
CS: Any words of wisdom for the viewers out there?
JG: Oh boy do I have lots! Don’t pick up stuff in the street. You never know if it’s cursed or not! And don’t make deals with demons! And never trust a fart, either!
CS: *slapping forehead in disgust*
JG: Ooo, and I’ve even got 37 tips on how NOT to get murdered on Halloween on my blog too, along with some other cool stuff…. *grins*
CS: *Rolls eyes towards the ceiling* THANK YOU, Jonathan, for this LOVELY intro into your life.
JG: Thanks! Folks can find out a lot more about me at my blog. Talking to people makes me feel weird…
CS: Okay, you’re free to go then, kiddo. Sheesh.
JG: Awesome! *looking under chair* Um…can I eat the rest of my Cheetos now?
Readers please feel free to ask Johnathan some questions as well as the lovely Cinsearae Santiago. They will be here throughout the day answering your questions!

@Kayla–Hello, and nice to meet you! Seriously, I have NO IDEA how the idea started. It pretty much popped in my head when there was a contest to submit a story to an e-book publisher. IT wasn’t picked, but the characters never went away, lol, so I kept going at it, and now it’s spiraling out of control, but in a good way, lol. Each character might be a fragment of someone I already know, or even a little piece of myself, but when stirred up, that’s what comes out, lol.
@Paula–Hi Paula! (The Kool-Aid cats are actually a small part in a story for the series I’m working on already, lol!

@Elie–HI Elie! Honestly, I didn’t have any input. Usually while I’m working on a story, I can ’see’ what I’d like to have on the book’s cover. Usually, I can get it to come out like how I imagined it, which is good, lol!

@ Sheila—Hi Sheila! And thank you for your support….I really appreciate it! (^_^)
@ Mindy—The best and worst thing about having everyday Halloween? Hm, I don’t think I’d have a problem with it, to be honest lol! I like it too much! Worst thing?–hm, maybe trying to maintain wearing a costume all the time, (corsets are a pain! lol!) or finding different ones to wear, but that’s about it, lol!
[Reply]
@ Mindy again—Jonathan had something to say!
“Um…after dealing with demons and experiencing what I saw that night, I don’t think I’d want it to be everyday, but a whole month would do… *grin* Best thing? Dressing up, and candy, candy, candy!!!!Whoo-hoo!”
[Reply]
Awesome interview and I was wondering what you would dress up as for Halloween?!
#5&6 done!

@Phylis—Dom’s personality seemed so fitting for Jonathan, it was too easy to bring Jonathan about. I think I should tell Dom anyway. He’ll be tickled pink he was a bit of inspiration for me. (^_^)

@ Jeanette–Hi There! I’m still trying to think up something. In my photo above, I was trying to go for a Roaring 20’s flapper girl look, lol. But that was back in September. (Philadelphia had a quarterly “Dracula’s Ball” event that I like to go to, and their final one is, of course, on Halloween) But as for what to be then, I’m still lost, lol!!! Me and my hubby try to coordinate. (^_^)

@ Christina—Hi! When it comes to writer’s block, I just go with the flow. You can’t ‘force’ yourself to write what isn’t there, and I chalk it up to my Muse taking a vacation, and just wait it out, lol. I have plenty of other creative things to keep myself busy–I have a magazine I publish, I take gothic/atmospheric photography, and I even make gothic accessories and jewelry, so I’m not really going too batty over here, lol. Jo sked the same question too, lol! (29.) My mom had tweaked an American Indian name that meant ‘Morning Star’. She thought it sounded so ‘pretty’. It actually irks me sometimes, because a lot of folks have a hard time pronouncing it upon first looking at it and boy do they spell it wrong too. it’s pronounced SincereRay–which is why I have folks call me by my nickname, Cindy, or Cin, or Rae, lol. Hi Ursula!
Jonathan is the more ‘fun’ guy in any given situation. He has a few weird quirks, but it doesn’t stop him, lol. And although he doesn’t like to talk much he’s had a little bit of experience being a semi-interviewer (he sort of butted in) over at another blog earlier this year.

Hi Cinsearae! LOVED the interview! I happen to love Halloween as well, though, maybe not enough to wish for it every single day. I could maybe celebrate it for a month though. I was wondering when you starting writing? Also, how supportive of your writing were/are the people in your life?

Yep, I make gothic accessories and jewelry–you can take a look over at my ETSY store http://MistressRae13.etsy.com I also have other items at my website’s storefront too. Just click on the “Store” tab on my site. (the link to my etsy store is there too. (^_^)

Jonathan, I think you’d be a very tubby Legolas. Try again on that one.
“Ummmm…..Freddy?”

“Aw, c’mon! Ummm…..ZOMBIE! LOL!”
Great, now you’ll scare the holy crap out of Kurt.

HI AMANDA! Good questions! Probably like mostly a lot of other authors say, I started young. Very young. Back in 3rd grade actually. (^_^) It all started with a simple writing exercise using some vocabulary words we had for that week!! And that’s what started the ball rolling, lol.
As for supportive folks–well, I’ve kept my stories to myself for a good chunk of my life. I’ve had a couple of dream-killing exes to thank for that. But the thing is, I’ve never stopped in spite of it. My mom (rest her soul)knew I wrote, but I never showed her any of my stories. My first novel I published I let her see, but she got to the first three pages before I stole the book back, lol. I GUESS my dad knows I write, I don’t think he’s ever seen my website, but I’d be too embarrassed for him to see it considering the types of stuff I write. GAH!!! My hubby is well aware I write and is very supportive–he even passes out my biz cards to interested people when he can. But he’s not a ‘reader’ per se. He’s more a visual guy, lol. He only knows what I tell him. Lol!!! So my real supporters are my friends online, and my Gratista Vampire Clan Dark Writers Yahoo Group, as they’re my online family!! (^_^)
[Reply]
HI BRIDGET!! This is a bit of a tough question! (^_^) I’m still not quite sure if I’d want to trade places with any of my characters, lol. It seems like it’d be interesting at first, but the stuff they have to deal with sometimes makes me cringe, lol. To have their powers would be a hell of a lot of fun though….to be in Christine’s shoes…well, I think she’s a lot braver than me, lol.
[Reply]
HI CYD! (^_^)
Hey Jonathan, you’re on again! you missed #32!!
*Chugging down some Pepsi and giving a belch* “Wow, I guess these folks out here likes me, huh?”
Uh, YEAH, that’s kinda obvious! LOL!
“Awesome!” *reading question* “WHOA!!! Dress up Worthington McNibbles?!?! I seriously doubt he’d let me do that to him!! Can you imagine me trying to sew up a teeny-tiny costume for him? And he’d probably slide right out of it. I suck at sewing.”
And he does! The first and last time he tried, he kept sticking himself with the needle, so he gave up. This is the same kid who accidentally sprayed himself in the face with deodorant, and sticks to using roll-ons or stick deodorant! LOL!
“You didn’t have to tell them that, ya know….”
[Reply]
I enjoyed this interview. Loved the idea of author interviewing character! Jonathan seems a great character!
[Reply]
HI FALLON! Woah, I almost missed this question!
I’m an AVID fan of the old school horror stuff. Remakes be DAMNED!!!
Here’s a sampling of stuff I love.
A Nightmare on Elm street
Friday the 13 (Although it did get totally out of control once they had Jason in outer space….)
Halloween
Hellraiser
and even older stuff….
ANYTHING that had Vincent Price in it (all those Roger Corman films that were based around Edgar Allan Poe stories, All of the ROCKED. I’m a big fan of Poe And of those Movies. Vincnet Price is an actor that will never be imitated or duplicated. *sigh*

I had two fave authors when I was a kid–Christopher Pike and R.L Stine. Their style was right up my alley with the creepy themes! LOL! I also read The Vampire Diaries back in the 90’s too. (^_^)

HI DEANA!
What sets my books apart from the others? Well, my vamps are not the average or ‘typical’ vamps you read or hear about…I’ve been picking up on that from the reviews I get, so that’s a good thing, lol. My vamps are pranic vamps. I definitely don’t want to sound like the typical vamp story’! lol!
Okay Jonathan, your turn…*nudging him again*
“Wow, I’ve never gotten so much attention before! Hi Deana. I’ve tried the jalapeno ones, but only once. It’s the main reason why I mentioned in my interview “Never trust a fart”….. I stick with the original flavor only, lol.
[Reply]
HI MINA! Not sure if you meant the question for him or me, but I’d definitely love the dress Lily wore in “Legend”, (Starring Tom Cruise and Tim Curry) when Lord Darkness was trying his best to tempt Lily to come to the darkside, lol. That black dress was absolutely GORGEOUS.
Jonathan–”Well, for me, I think my ultimate costume would be a Transformer.”
You can’t be serious. How’d you jump from Legolas to a Transformer?
Jonathan—”Maybe a vampire Transformer. He’d suck the oil out of the other transformers! HA! There!”

HI ANNA!(S.H.)
Well, for me the craziest/coolest thing I’d wish for to happen on Halloween is to have “The Nightmare Before Christmas” come to life. That would totally ROCK!!! LOL!!!
A paranormal creature hm? Good one…it’d be a toss up between a vamp or a witch, or a combination of the two, lol! (^_^)
Jonathan–”Ooo, I’ll agree with that. I’d make friends with Jack Skellington on a heartbeat. Heck, I’d LIVE in Halloween Town if I could!
As for a paranormal creature—I AM one! LOL!”

What a fun interview. Jonathan sounds like an interesting character. I really enjoy Halloween but I’m not sure I could deal with for longer than a month. HI SHARON! (^_^) Nice to meet you!
Your turn Jonathan!
I’m self employed now, and a book cover designer for an e-book company as well as individual clients–which helps a lot with getting more writing done, with minimal stress. I used to be a lowly file clerk for an insurance company.
Jonathan–”Um, hey! My major is English–creative writing! I wanna write books and stuff. I take pictures and create my own photobooks, but I wanna write too! I’m still working on a Space Bear story.”
Oh dear Lord, not THAT again….
[Reply]
HI KARIN! Looks like this one’s for you….
Jonathan—”Wow…um, well, the least favorite thing about Halloween is it only lasting one day, lol!”
[Reply]
HEY BELLA!
My fave food is a dessert I make. It’s simply called The Graveyard, which consists of finely crushed Oreo Cookies (minus the white stuff) and instant chocolate pudding mixed with Cool Whip. Make the pudding according to directions, then mix it with a container of coolwhip. Spread it in a aluminum pan and add the Oreo crumbs on top. (You have to use a whole package of them, and that represents the ‘dirt’, lol. Then you can get creative and add little tombstones to it, Marshmallow ghosts, and candy corn and pumpkin candies to it. Voila’—you’re done! lol.
and I actually like Frankenberry, lol. I can remember when all three used to be out ALL the time, then eventually Count Chocula got the spotlight and the other two only come out around Halloween!!! That sucks!
Jonathan–”ooo, that’s making me hungry… And I like BooBerry too, but the more I ate it, the more my poop started looking a little blue….so I stopped. That was getting kinda scary!”
Oh for the love of God….

Hi Cinsearae and Johnathan,
Than you for the wonderful interview. I am going to have to go check out that blog. Especially the 37 ways not to get murdered on Halloween.
I have 2 questions for Johnathan
Do you ever play offline RPG’s like Rifts or Nightbane?
Have you ever dressed up for Halloween as something you are? Something that most wouldn’t find “normal” or possibly even acceptable but it is something you are anyway…..and then let them wonder where that came from?

Nice, amusing interview.
What’s your favorite thing about being a writer? What’s your favorite Gothic scene to photograph? What is your favorite piece of goth jewelry to make?
Yum, Cheetos. A friend of mine’s face is Boo Berry. I love Halloween, costumes and corsets. I think it’s great you like gothy stuff like vampires, Poe and Vincent Price. I do retro pinup/classy goth modeling, and it looks like you enjoy that side of costuming, too. I also make jewelry, and I’m totally checking out your Etsy shop. Thanks for giving us a little look into your books (since I haven’t read them yet, but I’m loving BBB doing the 31 Dark Delights so I can check out new-to-me authors). Jonathan–OOO! I LIKE this one! Definitely Freddy. Freddy ROCKS! A scarred murderer who can kill you in your SLEEP! You can’t get any cooler than that! We’d definitely go around scaring folks in their dreams! HA!”
As for me, if some scary horror nut came to life, especially Michael, Jason, Freddy, or pumpkinhead–ANY of them…I think I’d just barricade my house and load up on ammo. LOL! But since these guys never seem to die, I’m afraid my efforts would prove futile, lol!

Jonathan–*waving hand around* “Ooo! I know! I know! The Joker!”
Now it’s The Joker? You went from Legolas, Freddy, A zombie, a vampire Transformer…and now…The Joker? Sheesh….

HEY PHYLIS!!
Thanks again for the cool comments and congrats! *HUGS* doing this was an absolute blast and I had LOADS of fun. I think Jonathan did too! LOL!

HI SARAH!
Well, I’m not a RPGer, lol. That’s all Jonathan. (^_^) My hubby got me the Wii system, and I’ve been playing around with “Ghostbusters”, lol.
Jonathan–”I like Warcraft…!” *grins* But I like playing a certain zombie game online too… http://kieraandjonathan.webs.com/joinmeintherampage.htm

HI AGAIN LIBBY!
Jonathan is a Cheetos fanatic. His room smells like it….but I’m sure it’s just his funky socks.
Jonathan—”Hey!”

HI STACEY! (^_^) Thank you so much for your support!

HELLO AORI! Wow, I like the sound of your name! (^_^)
Writing just sort of came to me when I was very young–around 3rd grade! No training or anything. I guess I just had a very active imagination and was writing down what I saw in my head, lol. And it never stopped since! (^_^)
Okay Jonathan, your turn.
Jonathan–”Why do I like Cheetos? It’s just…the cheesiness! and the crunchiness! LOL! And I stick with the original flavor only. I’ve tried the other kinds, but the jalapeno flavored ones make me have to go to the bathroom too much.”
[Reply]
HI AGAIN KOREN! Okay Jonathan, you got another question!
Jonathan–”Woah, this stuff rocks, lol. Hm, well, never tried out Rifts or Nightbane yet. My faves are Warcraft and my fave zombie game Zombie Rampage http://kieraandjonathan.webs.com/joinmeintherampage.htm
Well, I did dress up like how I ‘felt’ one time, so I think that’s kinda close to what you’re asking, lol. Although My sis Kiera said I looked like The Joker’s cousin, since I got a lot of purple streaks in my hair, lol. And nope, no one could really figure out what I was, either, lol!”

Hi Cinsearae and Jonathan, i truly enjoyed your interview.
Cinsearae what is the greatest writing advice you ever been given?

HI R.E.B.! Nice to meet you! —
(I checked out your storefront-Liked all your pirate-themed stiff, and the Miss Bunny shirt was cute!
I have a store too! http://www.cafepress.com/gv_press –all ABRAXAS themed goodies
The best thing about being a writer–creating my own worlds and diving in whenever I need to get away from ‘reality’.
I have no real favorite Gothic scene really. Wherever I am, especially in nature, something a bit eerie or atmospheric can just jump out at me at any given time. I’m always taking a camera with me where I go now. I’ve got some interesting shots at my ‘extended’ gallery

I usually like making interesting necklaces with a bit of Victorian flair, but lately I’ve been doing a lot of hair accessories. I’ll be adding more to my etsy shop soon! (^_^) http://MistressRae13.etsy.com Thanks for taking a look. (^_^)
Oh definitely, I looove costuming too! It helps to stave off any boredom that creeps up, lol.

HI ANA! Glad you enjoyed the interview!
The greatest advice ever given to me. Good one. It think it was something my mom said, along the lines of “Don’t let anyone dictate to you.” And I don’t. I’m not fond of people who think they can tell me what to do. I am my own person, not a drone. (^_^)Just be yourself, because no one else can!

Thanks for stopping by. I always love when and author interviews one of there characters.
Now would you rather have Jonathan cooked dinner for you or go on a 10 hour roadtrip with him? (He probably would want to play with the radio, then again I can just imagine what he would serve for food.)
5.6.8. Done

Has anyone else had trouble with LuLu not downloading books (Abraxas 1-3, Abraxas: Halloween Haywire & Jonathan’s book of cool, weird stuff that people are ordering?

Dear Cinsearae,
Thank you. ^O^/ It is my Japanese name I picked. Another question I have is: Is humor something you were born with or do you have to work at it?
Also, what was that first story you have written?
Jonathan I don’t like any other flavors, except the original myself!
Thanks. :3

HI CHRIS!!!
My least favorite genre to write? Hm…I’d have to go with period pieces or westerns, only because I’d have to do a bit of historical research. That type of history was never quite my fave, lol.
Oh there’s still quite a few books in the pipeline for the series. (^_^) It’s not finished yet, lol. I’m working on Book 5, plus another ’side story that’ll involve Jonathan and the gang again. (^_^)

HI MARNIE!
I’d rather take a trip with him!!! LOL! He CANNOT COOK whatsoever. He ever burns popcorn in the microwave….

HEY MINA!
If you have download problems, try right-clicking on the download button, and then got to “Save File As…” and click on that. I’ve noticed I’ve had to download PDF files in general that way myself. Hope that helps!!!

HI AGAIN AORI! (^_^)
I have no humor except DRY humor, lol. Only my characters possess that ability to be ‘funny’, lol! (^_^)
The first story I ever wrote was in third grade that involved a few talking animals. (I needed the escapism so early in my life, lol!) The story had to be based around several vocabulary words that we had for the week. (^_^)
*nudging Jonathan*
JONATHAN—”Yeah, I’m with you on the Cheetos thing Aori! (That IS a kick-ass name, btw!)I have a pair of underwear that’ll never be the same after trying the jalapeno flavored ones…”
