Guest Blog, Chat and Contest with author Linda Wisdom

*****

A big welcome to our readers today! Be sure to read to the end of the interview to find out how to WIN the fabulous prizes being offered up.

PLEASE NOTE: This is not a fixed time event, the post just goes live at 10:30 am CDT. You can stop by any time during the day or evening and leave your questions and chat.

PLEASE KEEP SPOILERS TO A MINIMUM. Not all of the readers today have read Linda’s books.

How The Witches Came Into My Life

Many thanks to Bitten By Books for having me here to talk about witches and how they came to choose me.

As a fan of paranormal books, it was a given I’d start writing them. After writing a few for Harlequin American Romance and Silhouette Intimate Moments, I knew I wanted to write MORE.

The thing is what would I write? My agent at the time suggested dark edgy vampires and while I enjoy reading about them, it didn’t strike a chord with me. I have a dark, demented, and quirky sense of humor. How would that work with the nightwalkers?

What I usually do is let my imagination take over. Think of it as soup simmering on the stove.

Before I knew it, Jazz Tremaine hopped into my head. From the beginning I knew she was a 700+ year young witch who’d been expelled from the Witches Academy. That she eliminated curses, drove a ’57 T-Bird convertible haunted by a cranky ghost, and she wore magick bunny slippers.

Jazz was just the tip of the iceberg and from the first word I wrote I knew witches was what I was supposed to write.

So let’s talk witches. For TV and movie, do you prefer Samantha Stevens, Witches of Eastwick or Practical Magic witches?

If you were a witch what would be your first spell?

    Hi Linda,

As a follower of The Witchy Chicks, I was so juiced to hear you were going to be here today.

I’m getting into The Witches of Eastwick (TV series), but LOVE Practical Magic.

I do have one question, you’ve definitely established yourself in the industry. Do you have any tips for an aspiring author?

Hi Linda. Thanks so much for joining us here today.

Out of the choices you asked about, I would have to pick Samantha from Bewitched. I loved that show. However, I would also have to pick Willow and Tara from Buffy. :)

Hmmm — a first spell. I may have to think about that one and come back later to post it. My first reaction may start a fight, so I’ll ponder some more… :)

Thanks for spending time with us today.

I love your books. My question is, do you like doing series books, such as the “Hex” stories more than single titles?

I have RSVP’s and spread the word.

    Thanks,

Hi Linda!!! Thanks for being here. I would have to pick Willow from Buffy with Samantha coming in second. I just want that spell where you wake-up and can just wave a handle or wiggle a nose and you are dressed and perfectly ready for your day. :)

I was wondering how did you make the job from paranormal fan to writer. Did you just sit down and decide today I’m going to write? :)

While I haven’t read any of your Jazz Tremaine books( I do have the first two but in a series I tend to wait to read them until I have 3 or 4 as I hate to wait for the next one to come out), I have read and loved your Silhouette’s. Gosh, I didn’t realize I had read so many of them until I checked out your book list. I especially enjoyed your Dreamscape book, “Twist of Fate”. My question is “What is on your bedside table right now to be read?

    Hi Linda,

To answer your question, I think my favorite witches are the Mayfair Witches from the Anne Rice novels. Then again, I grew up watching Betwitched and dreamed of being Tabitha. It’s SO hard to choose! I am watching Eastwick now and slowly getting into it. We’ll see how it turns out.

Do you remember the first paranormal book/series that you read that really hooked you into this genre?

    Hey Linda,

I prefer Jeannie from I Dream of Jeannie (Barbara Eden was hilarious!!!). As for my very first spell as a witch, it would definitely have to be a spell to promote health, wealth, prosperity, physical/mental/spiritual strength for all my loved ones!!!

    Questions for you…Turnabout is fair play… :P
*What would be the first spell that you would cast?
*Who do you think would do Jazz T. justice if your book was turned into a movie???

Hi Linda. Your books sound wonderful. As a direct descendant of one of the famous (infamous?) witches of Salem (Rebecca Nurse) I have always been fascinated by all things witch-related. If I was a witch, I have no idea about the 1st spell I would cast. It depends if teh whole “Charmed” rule about not casting spells for personal gain applies or not. If it didn’t, I think I would love to be a world-famous recording artist.

Oh, and I like Samantha Stevens except for the whole repressing-herself-for-sake-of-mortal-life thing. I think if I was a witch, I’d want to be like the Charmed variety. Kick-ass powers balanced with normal life - no repressing.

For media witches, probably the women of Practical Magic; while I enjoy watching Samantha, she’s a bit of a doormat.

My very first spell? It depends on my mood. Right now, anyone who thinks about abusing a child is suddenly struck with debilitating stomach cramps, every time they think about it. It’s worse if they actually do anything. As long as they don’t do or think about, they’re fine.

I am a big fan of witches too. It all started with Samantha Stevens. I so wanted to have powers growing up. LOL. Movie witches would have to be the Sally Owens (Sandra Bullocks character) in Practical Magic. I also liked the Charmed sisters. Of course the show started getting silly so I don’t watch it much any more. I’m always looking for stories about witches and look forward to any authors books that come out about them.

To answer your question, I absolutely loved Charmed, but out of your three I’d pick Samantha, hands down. As for my first spell, I don’t really know what it’d be. I’d have to think about it, so as to be sure that it doesn’t backfire in some way…
    I’d like to ask you:

Fond and warm greetings, Linda. Thanks for coming to BBB!

I’ve been eyeing your books for some time, witches being something that interests me. If you could collaborate on a writing project with anyone alive or dead who would you choose and why.

If “I” were a witch what would be “my” first spell would possibly be a good-luck spell for some friends. I have a couple of friends who was hit hard by the recession, and they deserve a little luck in their lives than the endless and continous badluck. Anything to drive the stress away for them.

I’d go with Practical Magic myself, though the Witches of Eastwick was highly entertaining. Have you thought about writing about any other paranormal characters, like vampires, werewolves, faeries, etc.?

I forgot to answer the questions. Practical Magic witches were really cool they did alot of spell magic, Bewitched I liked because she could twitch her nose, and a first spell??? to have my 3 yr old son potty trained, that would be a big help!!!!! Thanks Linda

    Merry meet Linda!!!

I cannot wait to read your books!!! I really love the cover art you chose for them! I haven’t watched the Eastwick Witches on tv, but I really enjoyed the Charmed series with the Halliwell sisters. Of the three witches you chose I would lean towards the Practical Magic witches! That was such a great movie. I personally would love a weight loss spell! I would much rather be reading books than working out:) Tell us more about the possibility of a tv series! That would be great! Much success!

I’m looking forward to reading about Jazz! I loved the movie Practical Magic. The two aunts were the best! I recently read The Trouble with Magic by Madelyn Alt. Hi Linda,

    Interesting questions…

I’ll answer yours first before I ask mine.:)

The best media witch was Endora from Bewitched. Why? Because she did not compromise who she was. She was a strong woman who wasn’t willing to dumb down her powers for a man. She was intelligent and had many wise things to say. She was not bubble headed or a power hungry teen or a woman afraid of her own power. Yes, she could cause problems, but she always stood her ground and would make amends if she knew she was wrong. Oh…and she always swore by the Goddess Hecate.;) I didn’t catch that until I was an adult watching the show.

As for my first spell…sorry…that’s Oathbound.:)

Now that I’ve answered yours, time to answer mine.:) It’s all very good to write paranormal fiction about witches, but witches are real and practice a real religion. How do you deal with the fact that Witchcraft if a real religion in this day and age, protected, at least here in Canada under our Charter of Rights? I know that it’s similarly protected in the US, but not under what statute.

    Cheers!

so sorry I am a little late, had to work tonight. I just want to say Linda I am a huge fan, and have enjoyed your work since the Harlequin days. I have been following your Hex series from the beginning. My favorites of course are Fluff and Puff. I do hope they make more of an appearance in your latest, however, even if they don’t thats ok too, since as stated I love your books.

The witches as a TV series is still in the pitching series. Because of Eastwick many don’t want to take a chance even if my witches are very different.

    Dina S,

I don’t have strict favorites since some places appeal to me according to my mood. But I do love places with a lot of history to them.

    Thanks Aori

Humor is a part of me. All my friends will say the same, but I have what I call a demented sense of humor which shows up in my books.

    Thanks Seri!

My favorite is writing secondary characters because there’s times I’m not sure what will happen!

    THanks Deborah!!!

    Hnm, good thing I look good in green.:}

Just as when I’ve been asked about spells it’s not something you do lightly. On one radio I was asked about a love spell for Brad Pitt. I explained if you weren’t real specific you could get Brad Pitt the beefy plumber.

    Hi Iokijo

I’d say Practical Magic and I Married A Witch

I’d consider a healing spell for those who need it most.

    Hi Karen

I respect the Craft and I’m writing about witches who have been in this world for over 700 years. I also have many pagan and Wicca friends who keep me on the right path.

    Hi Lesley,

I’d say closest are my pagan and Wicca friends but I’ve also had a dark fae in my back yard. My good friend Yasmine Galenorn helped me deal with it. An unsettli9ng experience!

    Hi Lori,

Thanks for being a long time fan!

Fluff and Puff refuse to be put off and they’ll show up now and then either in a book or as a short story included with the book.

    They’ll be blogging about their time here at the Emerald City Conf. They’re still looking for the wizard. :}

I Would say Samantha from Bewitched and my first spell would be to heal my body that way I could be runing around like a young heathy witch.

    Hi Linda,
Thanks for being on Bitten By Books!

I love and have read each and everyone of your books and love them all! Jazz is great!

If I were to “have to” choose my favorite TV witches, I imagine it would have to be the ones from Practical Magic.

Do you plan on continuing this series? I really hope to see more!

    Thank you,
    Sue

Hi Linda and welcome! Love the idea of a 700 year young witch. :) So, what drew you to witches and magic? It’s a great subject I don’t see enough of (and maybe I’m just not looking in the right place… LOL).

For me, I’ll always love Sam from Bewitched. She had it all - a great family, an annoying but fun mother, you name it. Not only that, but a ton of patience! LOL But I think a combination of Sam, Hermoine from Harry Potter and a dash of Rachel Morgan (from Kim Harrison’s series) would make the perfect witch - smart, fun, and patient.

    Now the other stuff:

Friends with BBB on Facebook and Twitter, RSVP’d(I think), and RT the event notice. Have BBB on my blogroll at http://www.readinsomethingcrazy.blogspot.com Am also friends with BBB on Goodreads. :)

    Thanks again Linda! :)

    Hi Sue,

I plan to write the whole series as long as the readers stick with me. We all know it’s the sales that keep the publishers accepting our books.

    Hi Amy I,

My former agent thought I should write a dark edgy vampire book, but that wasn’t me. I can be snarky, people say they see a lot of me in Jazz and once I started plotting I knew witches and magick was a perfect fit for me.
