Posted under Contests, Interviews by Site Hostess on Wednesday 7 October 2009 at 8:30 am

A big welcome to our readers today! Be sure to read to the end of the interview to find out how to WIN the fabulous prizes being offered up.

PLEASE NOTE: This is not a fixed time event, the post just goes live at 10:30 am CDT. You can stop by any time during the day or evening and leave your questions and chat.

PLEASE KEEP SPOILERS TO A MINIMUM. Not all of the readers today have read Jessica’s books.

Interview:

Hi Jessica!

Welcome to Bitten by Books, we are excited to have you here today!

I would like to thank you taking the time to join us for the question and answer session with our readers. It has been very interesting to get to know more about you and what makes you tick as a writer! Readers, if you haven’t done so already please stop by and get your copy of Jessica’s newest book The Beautiful Being.

BBB: What are the most challenging and the most rewarding aspects of writing?

JI: The most challenging aspect is keeping my own needs for the story in balance with what my readers want. Sometimes, if I write a story all my way, it gets out of whack. Actually, readers help me write better stories, as they aren’t self indulgent! The most rewarding aspects are having people appreciate what I’ve done and write to me about it. I think, wow! Someone bothered to read and write, and that means a great deal to me, even if the comment isn’t necessarily “good.”

BBB: Do you consider different series paranormal romance or urban fantasy? and do you think it is important to distinguish between the two?

JI: I think the lines have gotten a bit blurred. I suppose both my series could be urban fantasy as they both begin in San Francisco, center on younger folks (late twenties) who are living their urban lives, and then magic or aliens appear. But then, they also have that paranormal twist–the magic and aliens. I think genres and the genre lines often exist in order to delineate things for editors and publishers. That said, I know contemporary romance readers may not want to pick up an urban fantasy, and the information on the book spine is helpful in that way.

BBB: The Believe trilogy was set here on Earth, while the Being trilogy is on another planet. Why did you decide to leave Earth and create another world?

JI: I am not sure why, except that I have long been a science fiction fan, more a fan of science fiction film than books, though. I loved to watch Star Trek with my sons. I think that the idea of space is one that we comprehend in some inner way–the movie Contact with Jodie Foster made that clear to me. We know space in some fundamental way, and yet, we don’t know what in the heck is out there. So I wanted to do some of that figuring in my stories. And, plot wise, I suppose I have more freedom out there as no one really does know much!

But both series rely on the theory of quantum physics–that the world, solar system, galaxy, universe are all made up of energy. Everything is connected, is the same, is exactly what we are made up of. Nothing is separate. Everything is one thing. And that premise really does run through both series.

BBB: What is the most ridiculous thing that you have thought about doing to any of your characters but never did?

JI: I don’t know that I haven’t done what I’ve wanted to with characters. I can’t think of anything that they haven’t done. My editors have tweaked things and changed things, but pretty much, they have been able to live all over the page!

BBB: Will Les Croyant des Trois (Believe) reappear with different central characters?

JI: At this point, I am sad to say that no, there aren’t any further stories in that series. Though I have long wanted to write Niall’s story–from Reason to Believe–and I think Rasheed from Believe in Me would be a great leading man.

BBB: How do you keep track of your world building?

JI: On yellow legal pads and with the help of my careful readers, and, sadly, from readers who write to tell me that I missed something (I can fix things in the mass market versions). I write down the world ideas, and then I often have to re-read the previous novel to remind myself of where I’ve been and where I want to go next. It is so much fun to create a world, but it also involves so many details.

BBB: What do you feel are the benefits of the new electronic readers such as Kindle 2 or Sony Digital Book Reader to the environment?

JI: While I love print and while I love books–you should see my office at the college and my office, bedroom, living room, and master closet-, all filled and stacked with books, books, books-I think that books are wasteful. Books don’t make much sense any more, not with the depleted resources of this planet. And do we all want to have the 6.99 mass market version of a book forever? I think loading up books into Kindles and ereaders is fabulous, and when I want that special tome to get signed or to read and reread, I can buy that, too.

Something big is going to happen and the whole way we buy, sell, and read books will change completely in my lifetime. Remember, we haven’t been literate as a people that long. We can let go of this technology and move on to something else. We don’t have to hold on to what is not working well for writers or for readers.

BBB: What impact do electronic readers create on the bottom line for authors in the end? Do you feel they have a negative impact or positive, or no impact at all that you can see?

JI:Yes, we will miss having our book in a bookstore, and we might not be able to fondle our book and touch the cover repeatedly. But–we will be able to sell more books and make more money in the long run. I think the way we are paid will change, too (smaller advances, more payout per book). So I think it will be better for writers, once writers figure that out.

BBB: Can you tell us about the different trilogies and the general storyline that drives them?

JI: The Believe trilogy is a story about three siblings fighting for an understanding of their father. It’s about a lot of other things (the three siblings, men, have three very strong female love interests, who are major characters). But the major plot follows these men working together to solve the story of their father’s life and thus, riding their world of a man who would destroy it.

The Being trilogy is more about siblings trying to find each other and then trying to find their other halves, their doubles. They will literally go to space and back in order to do that. Both interests are fundamental to this story.

BBB: What else do you currently have in the works? When can we expect your next book?

JI: Right now, I am in the midst of change. My editor Kate Duffy recently died. She was the editor who shepherded both series, and I’m still a little bit in shock about her death. I also am in the process of finding a new agent, so with both these pivotal areas in some confusion, when I will publish and what is in question.

What I am working on is a novel more in line with my first six novels with NAL, contemporary women’s fiction.

BBB: Will there be updates from the next generation of Cygirians?

At this time, there is no news from the former Cygirians. That trilogy really locked itself up, though I do think I could write a tale about Porter and Stephanie. They were a really fun couple, and I do think they have a tale to tell. I enjoyed being a smart aleck through Porter, though I do think there are deeper waters there.

BBB: In the Being trilogy and the first book of Believe, San Francisco was featured. Why did you decide to leave The City, and what made you choose Edinburgh, Hilo, and Paris for the other two Believe books? Are these cities you have lived in, or just visited?

JI: Because these folks could move through matter, I knew I could take them anywhere. The story did not have to stick to conventional locals, so I just let them go where they felt like it and—not so strangely—they often went to places I have. I have never been to Edinburgh, however, and I had to do a great deal of research on that city. I had just been to Paris for three weeks before I wrote Believe in Me, so the details were very fresh.

BBB: Where do you see the paranormal/urban fantasy genre headed? Can you see it slowing down in the near future, or do you think that the immediate future is pretty bright for it?

JI: I wish I had a crystal ball so I could write the first of the brand new things to come down the pike—or maybe the third! The market is so variable, that it’s hard to say what will happen. My advice to other writers and my writing students is to write what you want, and then see what will happen later. It’s almost impossible to write for the market. We were all told that paranormals and vampires were over, and now look at them, dripping blood everywhere, even on TV! So again, I will just write what I want and hope that I can find an audience for it.

BBB: Do you have any personal traits that you have written into the characters of your books?

JI: So many I can’t count. In Being With Him, Garrick’s ironic take on the art museum was mine, a reaction I had when walking in the MOMA in New York City. I just pull from my life and from the world without really thinking about it, and then I see I’ve given them my habits and beliefs, not all good!

BBB: The Believe trilogy had many French references. Do you speak French?

JI: I desperately try. I go to France and embarrass myself constantly. But I love the language and the people. My dream is to have a little cottage somewhere, maybe Normandy, and live out my days as a wizened crone, milking my cow and feeding my ducks. I set part of Believe in Me in Normandy, basing one of the final scenes on a house I stayed at there.

BBB: True Blood or The Vampire Diaries?

JI: Sookie!! I love me my Sookie Stackhouse. I love the books; I love the show. I’ve turned my mom into a Sookie freak. She has a Sookie book in her purse at all times, to read at appointments and in line. I haven’t read The Vampire Diaries, though, so I can’t really say anything about them. I haven’t even read Twilight. Yikes! I’m stuck on Sookie.

BBB: Do you have any plans for book signings/ readings anytime soon? If so, where can our readers find you?

JI: October 11th, I will be at the Koret Auditorium at the San Francisco Main library in SF, CA on a panel about genre literature at 12.30. This should be a great panel, as we will be discussing the value of writing genre literature and also talking about how we are viewed by the “literati.”

October 20th, I will be at Orinda Books in Orinda, CA at 7 pm, reading from The Beautiful Being.

I love that you want to live out your days as a “wizened crone, milking my cow and feeding my ducks”. I’m the same way, except it would be Ireland and goats and chickens. BAHAHAHAHAHA

I really appreciate your sharing about keeping track of your world building. I’m JUST beginning this process, and wondered how other authors did it. I love my laptop but I’m still a paper notebook kind of gal. Thanks for sharing!

    Hi, Moonsanity–

Being wizened sounds all good, but I’m really freaking out about my nasio-labial folds around my mouth. so maybe I lied.

So make it Hawaii, a hat, and a pool boy?

Dani, I’ve been writing since I was very little, and I’m an academic by trade–so pretty much forever, though I started publishing in about 1991.

You sit down and write. I loved what Nora Robert’s said this year at RWA.

“When someone asks me about my muse, I want to bitch slap her.”

Muse? No muse. Ass in chair. which I have to do very soon.

Hey Jessica, I was introduced to your books through BBB. I can’t wait to pick up Beautiful Being. My question for you is are you planning on publishing any short stories? And if you are, will they overlap the series you have already written or be something completely different?

    Hi, Minday–

I think that short stories are really the most difficult form. I used to write short stories but then turned to novels. I actually started writing poetry!

But now I tend to think in one of two ways–a novel or an essay. Maybe somewhere along the way a short story will call to me, but no one is dialing my number right now!

    Thanks for writing.

Holy cow Ursula! You done did it all, and that’s a good thing.

Sharon–all books seem to be hard in the sense that there are questions I have to push through, thinkgs I don’t know the answers to. What makes the writing harder is where my life is at the time. right now, for one, I am just getting over surgery, a contractor is in the attic right over my office using a saw and working with banging metal objects, and I’m guest blogging here. So my novel today seems to be suffering a bit (though I have already gotten through the bare daily minimum I set of at least 300 words a day). When I was in the process of divorce–hard novel. When I wasn’t teaching one summer and could just write–easier novel.

Warm and fond greetings Jessica! Welcome to Bittenbybooks! I have yet to read any of your books. I do have one of your books in my TBR pile - a friend last year sent me large boxes of books to keep (Being with Him) and a friend loaned me one of your books that I have yet to read (When you Believe). It’s still in the small box of loaners she sent down.

    Hi, theresa–

I really value being in a tbr pile! Many of them.

What author(s) inspired you to become an author?

I read this book when I was very little: Cheaper by the Dozen by Frank Gilbreth, Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey.

I loved it (though I wasn’t as fond of the later movie with Steve Martin!)

They were so able to create a world, and I wanted to learn how to do that, too.

What author(s) continue to inspire you?

So many writers inspire me. This may sound like a cliche, but shakespeare is still such a force for me. All the plots we keep reading (even the supernatural! Hamlet has a ghost!)are right there. I love to share his plays with students, who come in kicking and screaming but them learn to at least “get” what he is doing.

I also love, love love Richard Russo. The Bridge of Sighs was wonderful.

    Olive Kittridge–great book.

Toni Morrison is amazing, always, even when I don’t like the novel.

I have read Pride and Prejudice about 560 times and The Mists of Avalon and I are “like” this!

    Best,

    Jessica

Do you find it hard to find time to read and write? I’m sure other authors want you to review their books and I’m sure you’re an avid reader, but don’t you find it hard to find time to do both? I know that reading, working and writing are a difficult to balance for me.

    Christine–

I love audio books. I listen to them instead of music in my car, and I would love for more of my books to be converted to audio!

Stacy, I agree with you. I have a hard time doing it all and I work full time and edit as well. It’s all about intense time management and a weird A type personality, at least for me.

Just as the card catalogue was once invented (remember those at the library) and then the digital catalogue, I am sure there will be the same for the digital books–maybe with coveres in the record.

Humans adapt and change and grow, and yet, we also fear the very changes we create. I am sure we will figure it all out.

    Hi, Bea–

I don’t believe in writers block. I believe in bad writing, but at least bad writing opens the stop gaps and allows the flow to continue.

I like to write in the early morning, usually somewhere between 7-10.

shirley–The order is Being With Him, Intimate Beings, and then The Beautiful Beings.

and Lisa M–I did write a long one about that, and I’m too lazy to do it again, so I cut and pasted it:

    Steamy as in sexy?

I’d say 2.5/3. I love me a good sex scene (reading and writing them!) but I also am very invested in the emotional and psychological growth necessary to make the sex truly “hot.”

Jessica, I am really glad to hear that. I enjoy a steamy scene, but too much is well, I usually avoid the stories that are too erotic. I think that growth is very important too. Sex scenes can’t carry a book (in my opinion), you need a good plot and strong characters. Thanks for responding so quickly.

    Ali–

Which of your titles is closest to your heart?

I have to say that Her Daughter’s Eyes is closest to me in that it was my first. You know how we humans are about our first anythings! It might not be my best novel, but it is the one where I put all my hopes and dreams for myself into ambition and drive and completed it, packaged it up, sold it to an agent. It’s very symbolic, and the story, I think, comes out of feelings from my childhood–thankfully, not fact.

Which of your covers is your favorite?

I really like the Believe trilogy covers what with those handsome men (don’t think about the fact they are supposed to be brothers. they look nothing alike!)

    Linda–

Here’s a fun story. I have a prescription for Fluocimide (I have some skin issues sometimes). the box was on my desk. I needed a name for an bad guy in The Beautiful Being. I looked at the box. I stared some more. Suddenly, I saw it: Luoc (f-luoc-cimide).

    Elie–

Seems that we are on the same “sex” page there. I think if I want erotica, I will pick up an erotic novel. But in a novel that I believe is a novel in terms of character and theme, too much sex just gets in the way. I have been known to skim those extraneous sex scenes. Trust me, I’m not anti sex. I’m just pro story.

Ursula–Instant starts out anything but perfect, but you will see where it goes!

    Hi, Dana–

Is there a series that you are looking forward to the next book or wishing the author would write just one more?

As I mentioned in the interview section, I am a Sookie Stackhouse fan, and I am waiting for the next novel. Not the short stories. The next NOVEL! I found Sookie late–after True Blood started on HBO–and I read them like–I read them like I was eating candy.

Also…What character did you enjoy developing the most: Felix, Sariel or Rufus.

Felix was fun, though Sariel was the first to grab my attnetion. I found him very deep, dark, and sexy–but Felix was also sexy and funny!

I have not been to RT, though I have heard tell of the hijinks and fun there. I haven’t made my convention choices this year, but will have to soon.

    Hi, Deana–

Your question is hard to answer, but I think that the Being and the Believe series actually have a level of sonnection or maybe even spirituality in them that I don’t often read in paranormals. Not religion. Not god. Connection in a huge way.

    Lisa B–

I really started at the “getting published” aspect in 1993, but with poetry and short stories. I finished Her Daughter’s Eyes in 1999 and signed with my agent in late 1999. She managed to sell in spring 2000.

Israel before it was Israel. Rome as it was being founded. Almost every epoch of England (and then I’d want to leave fast before the palgues got me).

Very rarely. Mostly, no, I have no say in my covers. I’ve asked for tweaks with fonts and questioned things (like, say, why is there a beach on the Matter of Grace when it is often set at a “pool”?). But this is a marketing thing and very often, the photo or picture has nothing to do with my story.

I finished The Widow’s War by Mary Mackey and just handed it off to a friend. I am reading a Susan Johnson book that my agent accidnetally sent me in a bundle of mine, and I just started Thomas Pynchon’s Inherent Vice. Hi, Dana–

You know, RT does sound like fun, and it would be good to go to a Charlaine Harris panel or talk! thank you for your comments and your steering folks to my books.

Kayla–My favorite book is Pride and Prejudice. Always has been, always will be.

Beth–the Crying of Lot 49 was good, and I finished it. Half way through Gravity’s Rainbow–been half way through for years. V? Never even tried!

    Taylor–

I love the conept but I am an English teacher, and sometimes, writing that isn’t “good” gets my goat. Can’t help it–occupational issue, and too many folks brought sentence level and descriptive complaints against that novel, so I thought, Hey, I’ll just let that series go.

Clearly, she doesn’t need my readership!

    Hello Jessica,

I’ve only recently stumbled across the Bitten by Books website. It’s great for finding new fantasy/paranormal romance authors. I’ve been in a book desert until recently, unable to find books that i am interested in.

Thank you for doing this interview! After reading your interview and looking your books up, your books have definately been added to my next purchase list. I’d also love to be a fly in the wall when you have your discussion about how the literati view authors in your genre.

Congratulations on your continued success. I look forward to becoming acquainted with your work.

    Hi, Janice–

I don’t have a kindle yet, though that reduction in price did tempt me. However, I do so much reading on my computer becuase of all my students–at Diablo Valley College and UCLA, where I teach novel writing. I reading pages and pages online, so the notion that I could put that on a kindle sounds absolutely wonderful!

    Hi, All!

It’s been a really great day. thank you all for your comments and thoughts and questions. I feel like I made some good contact with readers–and writers, too. I am just recuperating from a procedure, and I’m going to fold up my party tent and go watch the tivo’d Top Chef and call it a night.

Thank you to Rachel for getting this going! We planned it months ago, and I can’t believe all that time has come and gone. Bitten By Books is a wonderful site, the chat was fantastic, and the authors featured here–oh! that’s me :)

Happy reading to you all–and good luck in the contest. You can always contact me through my web site: http://www.jessicabarksdaleinclan.com

Great to have you Jessica! Your novels sure look interesting. I’ll ahve to put them on my TBR list. (It’s getting quite long since I’ve been a member here….)

So my question is this: When writing, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Is it a scene, a conversation, a characters name?

Thanks for sharing & answering everyones questions Jessica.. 1st hope you feel better quickly. Your a new to me author [thanks BBB], and esp. your Being series sound really good. I’ll have to check them out.
Agree with you on the ebooks. I think the biggest change will come when readers demand that the exclusive bull stop. I mean when ebooks are handled more like music… primarily one format. You choose the reader you like best, and buy from what ever store you like. It’s done with MP3’s. I think you’ll see a large increase in E sales when that happens. At that point you’ll probably see “red box’s” for books at train stations etc.
OK.. question.. completely off books.. Who is your favorite Star Trek character.. from any series?

I read your view on ebook vs paper, so my question is what’s your view on author sigings, you know if it all went ebook there wouldn’t be any signings anymore. As a reader and a fan I love meeting the author and having my books signed. It makes them even more precious to me and it’s so much fun. :)
    Thank you Jessica and Rachel.

Hi, All–A bit of finishing up here! Need to answer up some of these questions!

Mickey–My favorite sci fi (or speculative fiction, as some like it to be called) writer is Ursual K Leguin–The Left Hand of Darkness a big favorite!

Chris J–Instead of signings, we can have redings and events. There can be some “take home” piece of paper–a bookmark or what about a digital photo to use as a screen saver. In person events have to and can always happen!

Carol L–I have been writing YA, but I still write poetry, short fiction, and essays–I also blog at http://www.redroom.com/author/jessica-barksdale-inclan

Lesley–The answer here–classes. Lots and lots of classes. And readings. And read-ing!

iokijo–My favorite Star Trek character is James Tiberius Kirk.

Sheila–Frustration. Yes, but not with writing but publishing!

    Best,

    J

Hi Jessica, I just ordered your books. Can’t wait to get them. I have not tried the books online before and I saw you recommend using them instead of the hard copy. I understand having books every where because I also have books in every room, closet, even in the kitchen. I think I may try the ereaders to see how that works.. I haven’t read your books yet but will as soon as they arrive but I see your a Sookie fan. So am I. Which book is your favorite? And do you think you would be coming to Harrisburg,PA any time in the future for signings? I would love to come to one. thank you and I’m sorry to hear your editor passed.

Biki–I research for a long time on many topics. I need to know places and people and things, little and big. But I like to do my research after I write, mostly, so that I don’t vere off plot.

    Patricia–

I have another novel written that could be a series, but because of my publishing limbo right now (my editor Kate Duffy passed away for one!), I don’t know where I am going with it. But it is here on earth, though in the future.

And Ashley–You are right. I have been writing since I was a child. I started publishing in college (poetry) but then I took time off to get my degrees and having children, and came back at the publishing angle around 1993.
