Interview:

Hi Dakota!

Welcome to Bitten by Books, we are excited to have you here today!

I would like to thank you taking the time to join us for the question and answer session with our readers. It has been very interesting to get to know more about you and what makes you tick as a writer! Readers, if you haven’t done so already please stop by and get your copy of Dakota’s latest release Accidentally Dead.

BBB: What do you find the most challenging aspect of writing?

DC: Structuring my time well enough to get a full 8-10 hours in. There are just never enough hours in the day for me to get everything I hope to accomplish done. Oh, and finding time to shower. ‘Cause you know, good hygiene is very important. LOL

BBB: What is the most rewarding aspect of writing for you?

DC: Definitely being able to spend hours in a world constructed just the way I’d do things if I ran the world. Which, I’m told, prolly isn’t going to happen any time soon :) I also love getting an email or having someone tell me I made them laugh–nothing makes me smile more.

BBB: What or who was your muse that got you started writing?

DC: I don’t really have a muse–I just had an idea. I always made up stories in my head about people if I was bored or simply people watching. Eventually, that translated to my computer and I just did it. I began writing after I started reviewing for an online website. I never meant for it to get as far as it has. How I got here to this point still amazes me, but I’m grateful and humbled by the op I’ve been given.

BBB: What do you feel are the benefits of the new electronic readers such as Kindle to the environment?

DC: Oh, I think they’re fantastic! It doesn’t get much more beneficial than being able to carry a bunch of books on a single device. Going away on vacation to the beach just got a whole lot easier. I’m a huge fan of the Kindle and other such devices that allow you to download a bunch of books, access the Internet etc. Now I’ll wait for the Kindle uber version. I’m hoping that one will cook dinner for me, too.

BBB: What impact do electronic readers create on the bottom line for authors in the end? Do you feel they have a negative impact or positive, or no impact at all that you can see?

DC: Truthfully, I just love them. I’m sure there’s a negative aspect to anything given the chance to find one, but I’m going to stick with the idea that the kind of technology that supports the sort of ease and choice the Kindle and other’s have is fab. Oh, and I want one–so if anyone feels magnanimous, I have a Kindle and or other e-reader device fund you can donate to.

BBB: Who among your characters is your favorite and why?

DC: Oh, I so can’t pick. It would be like asking me to pick between my children. My fave is always the one I’m working on because we hang out for long periods of time together.

BBB: So Dakota, do you plan on launching a second career in gourmet potato salad?

DC: Uh-huh. Right after I take care of world peace and win the Miss Universe contest.

BBB: If you could keep Barry Manilow as your love slave without anyone finding out, would you do it?

DC: Gasp! I don’t feel that way about Barry. I don’t lust, I long. There’s a diff :) But I’d definitely duct tape him to a chair in my backyard and make him play the piano for me while he croons and I float on my inner tube in my pool, no doubt about it.

BBB: Can you tell us how many more books are planned for the Accidental series and when we can expect the next one?

DC: Well, there’s The Accidental Human which features Wanda, the third friend in the series and that’s out in March of 2009. I was thinking the series had come to an end. However, ya just never know what those three women might stick their noses into. Who knows if they might not have another adventure?

BBB: What genre would you classify your series? Urban Fantasy, Horror, Paranormal a mixture?

DC: You know, I’m labeled paranormal, and I guess horror could fit because Nina from Accidentally Dead is truly a horror. But Urban Fantasy is usually a contemp setting with a paranormal slant to it, no? So the short answer is–I dunno. LOL. I’m good with whatever ya wanna call me.

BBB: What prompted you to poke fun at Mary Kay?

DC: Now who said I was doing that? Lies, I tell ya–all lies! Okay, not such a lie. I met a whole passel of the lovely MK ladies at a convention in 2004 here in Dallas and truly, they were very nice. But seriously, even if I were a Mary Kay consultant, I’d crack wise about colors and logic and wearing colored skirts to identify my level of success in the company. The idea that you can earn a pink car selling lip gloss cracks me up, but I say woo to the hoo if you do it :) And all my snark is done with love. The MK ladies are really a great bunch of women who want to be productive doing something they love. That’s all good in my mind.

BBB: As a pepsi guru, if we put a blindfold on you, and had you sample coca cola, pepsi and RC cola, would you be able to know the difference?

DC: Like a mother knows the difference between identical twins, baby.

BBB: What is your favorite paranormal book of all time?

DC: As of this moment, Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz. Dude can write. But I’m not a pack rat, so that could change and has over the years :)

BBB: What do you like to do in between all the time you spend drooling over Barry and corresponding with 200 messages a day on your yahoo group.

DC: Shop. Snort.

BBB: What did you do before you became a writer? Do you write full time?

DC: I was a trophy wife. Seriously–and then I wasn’t. Wow, did that suck. LOL. But it was sort of how I decided to immerse myself in writing and make it my career. And yep, I write full, full time.

BBB: We all know Wanda’s story is next in The Accidental Human, are you planning on continuing the Accidental series after her story? If so, with who as the main character?

DC: I’ll never tell, but I will tell you, MAYBE. LOL

BBB: What inspired you to make Nina curse like a sailor? Are the rumors she is based a bit on your life true?

DC: Nina is kinda who I am in my head. Typically, if the conversation I’m having with someone is kinda ho-hum, or the person I’m chatting with is whining and the whine is completely unnecessary, I think the things Nina actually says out loud. I’m just way too diplomatic to say it like she does–unless you ask for the truth, then I’m all in. So yeah, the rumor is sorta true that I’m internally much like Nina. The inspiration came from needing to have a character who would be the negative pin in the ever optimistic Marty’s bubble. Wanda was too meek to begin with and Nina was crazy abrasive. Marty fell somewhere in the middle–so I had to create opposite ends of the spectrum characters. Plus, ya gotta admit, there’s a certain freedom to calling someone a fucktard and feeling no remorse at all for it, right?

BBB: Do you have any pearls of wisdom you would like to share with our readers here today?

DC: I have pearls? OMG–why didn’t someone tell me sooner–I could’ve pawned them for cash! Seriously, I just want to shout out a huge thanks for making The Accidental series such a success, and many, many thanks to all the people who donated to my “Feed Dakota’s Family” granola bar fund. My children thank you, too!

Dakota–you write very hilariously; when you’re writing something really snarky or funny do you laugh at yourself? For instance, the tail fiasco in The Accidental Werewolf. LMAO!

Did you set out to write funny or did it just come through since you’re such a fun person? ;)

Lastly, when are you going to introduce me to Kristen? *snork*

  5. Comment by Dakota Cassidy — September 15, 2008 @ 9:46 am

Hey, Cindi! You know, I can’t say for sure why werewolves other than I thought the whole take on dogs would be kinda funny. ‘Cause seriously, wolves do look like dogs. it was easy prey. LOL

Hey, Kim C! No, no, and no. I never ever laugh at almost anything I write. And if I do, it’s typically not what most people find funny at all. LOL. In fact, I often ask my test readers if they laughed when they read a book of mine because I’m never sure if I did my job.

    And, uh, WHO’S Kristin? LOL

    Thanns for popping in!

Hey, Cate! Thanks for popping in–my only advice is–write–ignore everything else and write. And listen–learn to take criticism whether it’s harsh or not. Take it with a gracious attitude and keep plugging onward. And I have an agent, doll. I’d never evah submit on my own. I is askairt :)

Lori–hey, honey! I use my experiences as a trophy wife, I just don’t use them solely. LOL. I mingle a great deal of Marty’s personality in with that of a trophy wife’s traits :)

T.M–dude–I’m so in it’s pathetic. I thought my passion was the guitar, but it seems the drums have become my latest fixation. And what would we call ourselves if we had a band? One fabulous chick and Mark? LMAO

AriesRain–is being a one of a kind writer like being unique? That word was the kiss of death in any beauty pageant. LOL And if hubby’s using you as a tool–rawk ON, my sistah!

I use real life traits of people I’m close to, definitely. But I never necessarily use all the characteristics of just one person in my writing. I like flavah and variety :) That includes personality traits and quirks as well.

DC - Yes unique. Not the “kiss of death” kind either. I love that I still find myself belly laughing well after I am done reading one of your books. Oh, and “fucktard” has been a favorite in my family’s vocab for a number of years, so it pulls on the heartstrings a little when I hear/read someone else say it.

I have a question. Do you ever think that you will write a book from the male perspective, like you have written from Nina’s perspective?

Also, will you ever write again focusing solely on Wanda? I would love to see everyone struggle through maybe a furry pregnancy. Hahaha.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t make that conference, but the stories were priceless, especially when I heard some of our writers say a group of the MK posse at a bull riding honky tonk bar looking as if they’d just been caught with their hands in the cookie jar…or the Mac counter at Nordstrom. ;-)

Wendy–Well, sort of. I have a stand alone called Kiss and Hell in the summer of 09. I MIGHT have something planned after Wanda–we shall see and I’m a potty mouth in my mind–that’s it, I swear. LOL

Marnie–did you just call me a twit? Tee hee. Um, no, typically I have a very vague idea of what they’ll look like. Mostly hair color–they develop as I write them.

Becky–I’d so love to do a male POV, but in romance, I don’t know that I’d do it primarily in the male perspective, and I’m all about easy. That could be tough, Yup! Wanda’s out in March 2009.

    William–thanks for dropping by!

    Patricia–thank you!

Rebekah–The Outsiders–and oh, definitely I see myself in another genre. I love versatility and change.

Michelle B–I just had a what if moment–like what if you were a demon and you lived your life pretty clean, but ended up in Hell anyway. You know, like clerical error.

Kristin–I write at night. From like 10-5 or so mostly–so I get up around 11 or 12–do my housework, prepare dinner for everyone, spend some time with my sons and honeybunny, then hit the keyboard.

    DC :)

Hey Dakota, thanks for joining us today :)
Do you listen to music while you write? and if so, then what? I know I ask this question all the time, but seriously, I’m starting to build up a killer playlist  oh, and do you ever accomplish the 8-10 hours a day writing schedule? I’m lucky if I find that much free time in a month, let alone in a week ;/

Wow, Dakota, did I just read that you do your writing from 10-5 at night. That’s a pretty harsh schedule, although obviously it works for you. What does it mean for your family life though? How has your family adjusted to the demands of your career?

  58. Comment by Dakota Cassidy — September 15, 2008 @ 2:24 pm

Hey, Sarai! I do sometimes listen to music. Mostly it’s classical like Vivaldi, Mozart, Pagninni (SP). Stuff without words because then I’m singing along instead of writing. LOL. I do most times accomplish the 8-10, but sometimes it’s only 6-7. it just depends on if I’ve come to a point in the book where I’m stuck and need to recharge.

Yo, yo, yo, Estella! Thanks for dropping by, and mostly I read, garden, swim, catch a movie or play Rock band these days. I know… pathetic, eh?

JK–You did read that, and I consider it my job. it’s one I love, no doubt, but I’d devote that much time or more to a full time job outside my home. So I try to look at it as my business and my workplace is my office.

As a single parent my sons knew I’d have to really work it in order to support us–I think they’re just grateful I’m not working it at Wal-Mart. They’re also older now, so they have their own stuff they’re involved in, too. But We have dinner together, watch TV together–take in a movie. What I’m truly hoping is they learn from my work ethic and no matter how small the job, give it your best effort, ya know?

What??? No NIN blaring whilst you write?

I had a couple of questions in mind but by the time I got here, they had already been asked. Please excuse the smoke as I contemplate a new one.

If you could pick a book by someone else to write a scene or chapter for, whose book would you pick, what character would you write as/about and why?

I mean, doesn’t everyone think werewolves look like dogs and could mistakenly be thrown in the pound–or is that just me? LOL

I haven’t purchased the Vampire Print books simply because Paranormal books are never first on my list but I just read an interview from CT (reviewer’s choice for Accidentally Dead) and loved how there are true to life problems and pranks that happen in your books that make it fun to read and not the dark and scary impression I get when I think of Vampires.

You must be so thrilled to have reader’s comment on how much they love your stories. Keep them coming as I look forward to reading more of them! Congrats!! You deserve your success.

Hey, Kim B. I’d love to do some YA (young adult) because I’m honestly still 15 in my mental capacity. LOL. And I’d definitely choose Nina from Accidentally Dead. She has no filter from brain to mouth–so she says whatever she feels, and even if it’s brash and abrasive–I dig that kind of freedom :)

Daelith–I’m currently into the Odd Thomas series by Dean Koontz.

Dorothy–believe it or not, I’ve never seen an episode of Buffy or any of the preceding vamp shows. I know–what kind of paranormal writer am I?
