Interview, Chat and Contest with author Chloe Neill

Posted under Contests, Site News by Site Hostess on Monday 5 October 2009 at 8:25 am

A big welcome to our readers today! Be sure to read to the end of the interview to find out how to WIN the fabulous prizes being offered up.

PLEASE NOTE: This is not a fixed time event, the post just goes live at 10:30 am CDT. You can stop by any time during the day or evening and leave your questions and chat.

PLEASE KEEP SPOILERS TO A MINIMUM. Not all of the readers today have read Chloe’s books.

Interview:

Hi Chloe!

Welcome to Bitten by Books, we are excited to have you here today!

I would like to thank you taking the time to join us for the question and answer session with our readers. It has been very interesting to get to know more about you and what makes you tick as a writer! Readers, if you haven’t done so already please stop by and get your copy of Chloe’s newest book Friday Night Bites.

BBB: What are the most challenging and the most rewarding aspects of writing?

CN: The most challenging aspect is the always-dreaded deadline. Having a deadline looming out there requires an incredible amount of daily discipline, especially if you have a dayjob or other responsibilities that take up would-be writing time. The most rewarding aspect is hearing or reading what other folks have to say about the novels, or what they think is going to happen down the line. It still surprises me that folks are talking about characters who were born of my imagination. Very, very awesome.

BBB: Do you consider Chicagoland Vampires series paranormal romance or urban fantasy? and do you think it is important to distinguish between the two?

CN: First and foremost, I think people should read the stories that they love, whether they be PN or UF. That said, because brick and mortar bookstores distinguish, I think it is important to help readers understand the kind of books you’re writing. From start to finish, as a series, I’d peg the books as paranormal romance, as there’s definitely romantic tension and I plan a happy ending for Merit by the end of the books. But on a book-by-book basis, I’d call them urban fantasy.

BBB: Will Merit travel to any other cities and meet any of the other factions there?

CN: That depends entirely on how long the series runs. I’d like Merit to visit at least the Greenwich Presidium in London, but it really depends on how many books I’m allowed to write.

BBB: What is the most ridiculous thing that you have thought about doing to any of your characters but never did?

CN: Merit was originally in an alt-rock girl band (!!!). In the first draft of Some Girls Bite, she and Catcher were engaged before the end of the book. It made for a cute scene, but it wasn’t really much in the way of realistic.

BBB: Are there any plans for the shifters to come out of the closet any time soon? And will any of them have their own stories?

CN: That’s an excellent question, but I think that’s something Gabriel Keene and the rest of the Pack leaders are still mulling over. Book three, TWICE BITTEN, is Merit’s chance to dive into the world of the shifters. I also have some thoughts about a separate shifter series, but it’s on the back burner for now.

BBB: How do you keep track of your world building?

CN: What is this “keeping track” you’re referring to? :) I have some character profiles written down and I keep lots of electronic photographs of Chicago and various places I’ve visited, but that’s really it.  It’s all in my head.

BBB: What do you feel are the benefits of the new electronic readers such as Kindle 2 or Sony Digital Book Reader to the environment?

CN: First of all, convenience. I have a Kindle, and while I’m still getting used to the feel and look of it, it’s incredibly portable. I can travel with a few dozen books in one tiny package (and will be doing just that later this month). But will e-readers ever entirely supplant books? If so, that would be many, many years in the future. And what would we do at book signings??

BBB: What impact do electronic readers create on the bottom line for authors in the end? Do you feel they have a negative impact or positive, or no impact at all that you can see?

CN: Honestly, I have no clue. Digital rights are addressed in my contract, but I haven’t seen a significant difference either way.

BBB: Can you tell us about the Chicagoland Vampire series and the general storylines that drives it?

CN: Absolutely. The general concept behind the CV books is to give voice to a female vampire who’s not, at least at first, really that good at being a vampire. She has a cast of great supporting characters, but also a nemesis and, of course, boys who impose additional drama on her already confused world. My goal was to provide readers with a very contemporary setting, and imagine a world in which vampires were brought out of the closet after centuries of living an assimilated life.

BBB: What else do you currently have in the works? When can we expect your next Chicagoland Vampire book?

CN: I just finished (about five hours ago), book three in the Chicagoland Vampires series–TWICE BITTEN. It’s set to release in July 2010. I’m also really excited about Firespell, the first book in my new Novels of the Dark Elite series. Firespell is a YA novel, and it will be released in January 2010. For readers who haven’t already had a chance to check out the first chapter, it will be posted on my web site later this month.

BBB: If one only one of your stories could be made into movie or tv show, which one would you love to see come to life and who would your dream cast be?

CN: Wow. That’s a hard one. I’d be thrilled for any of my novels to be made into a movie or TV show, and I think any of them would be easily translated. I’m a visual writer, so I’ve tried to write books that read like movies–stories in which readers can visualize the action as it moves along.

BBB: Where do you see the paranormal/urban fantasy genre headed? Can you see it slowing down in the near future, or do you think that the immediate future is pretty bright for it?

CN: I really hope things don’t slow down. I think the popularity brought to the genre by the success of TWILIGHT has brought a group of new readers into the fold; although UF and PN may stop making headlines at some point, these books were around before TWILIGHT (Sherrilyn Kenyon, for example), and hopefully the genre will continue to develop and grow in the future.

BBB: Do you have any personal traits that you have written into the characters of your books?

CN: Yes–on an individual basis. Merit’s sarcasm is mine. I’m also told I use the word “apparently” a lot. :) She loves books and pens and chocolate, as do I. She thinks Ethan and Morgan are both handsome, as do I.

I also hope readers see some of themselves in Merit–especially her desire to be *better.*

BBB: Currently the series is focused on Merit, at what point in the story arc will you bring other characters into the lime light.

CN: The CV series is told from Merit’s point of view, so she will always be the voice of the series. But in Book 2, we learn more about her family, and in Book 3, we learn more about the nation’s shifter populations.

BBB: True Blood or The Vampire Diaries?

CN: 30 Rock!

BBB: If Merit had a theme song what would it be? What about Ethan’s? :)

CN: Oh, great question. Merit (like me) loves alt-rock and indie music, and is a big fan of the band Muse. I think she’d find their song “Hysteria” to be very motivating.

As for Ethan . . . that’s a tough one. Ethan considers himself a lover of fine opera, but secretly adores the blues (Robert Johnson, Albert King, John Lee Hooker).

BBB: Can you tell us more about your new series and book Firespell? Will it intersect with the Chicagoland Vampires series at all?

CN: Although Firespell is set in Chicago, it’s a completely different world than in the CV books. Firespell is the story of 16 year-old Lily Parker, who’s just been sent to boarding school in Chicago. In only the first few days, she discovers that things do, indeed, go bump in the night.

BBB: Do you have any plans for book signings/ readings anytime soon? If so, where can our readers find you?

CN: Many, many plans. I have four upcoming readings/signings, in Omaha, NE (Oct. 1), Lincoln, NE (Oct. 12), and North Little Rock, AR (Oct. 24 x 2).  For more information, readers can visit: http://chloeneill.com/events.htm

Thanks so much for having me today! And thanks to everyone for reading.

    Hi Chloe

I have to start by saying I love The Chicagoland series. I just finished Friday Night Bites.
My question is how many books do you plan or want in this series.
Also I know you said you plan on giving Merit a happy ending, does that ending include a love interest.

    Thank you

    Hi Ms. Neill,

I adored your work, “Some Girls Bite,” and when I heard that you were interviewing here, I had to RSVP. My questions stem from the end of the chapter, “The Things That Go Bump in the Night… Are Probably Registered Voters in Cook County,” where, shortly after meeting each other, Catcher advises Merit that he’s offering to train her partly for the sake of her grandfather, but also “… partly because you have something of mine. And the time will come when it’s up to you to protect it,” (p. 98-99). What does Merit have of Catcher’s, why would it need protecting in the future, and why would Catcher, an advanced sorcerer in all four keys (both major and minor) not be able to protect it himself?

I’m so excited to read about your books. I must confess that I have not read any of them. However, they seem VERY interesting. They are going on my to be read list. What sets your books apart from the others?

I rsvp’d. thanks for your time.

I am soooo excited about FNB! I can’t wait to see what happens between Merit and Morgan and their little “arrangement”. I can’t decide how I feel about him or Ethan either. They both seem like they have their own agendas or secrets that they are keeping from Merit.

Will we still get to see more of Catcher and the rest of the gang as well? The series is still sofresh that I just have too many questions to ask, that it’s hard to pick the ones that can be answered as of now!

Here’s another easy one, how many books will there be so far? I know I’ve probably asked this elsewhere, but at the moment I cannot remember! That’s how the mind works while in college! ;)

My question: why did you choose this genre to write about, was it a favorite author of yours that inspired you or maybe you have many dreams that gave you the first idea?
    Thank you

Good morning, everyone! Thanks for dropping by today.

@ Paula - I have eight books in mind, and there are currently four books under contract. Sales will determine what happens between 4 and 8. :)

@ Jessica - Excellent question, but I can’t answer it! You’ll have to keep reading to get the answer to that one. :)

@ Deana - Thanks, Deana. I hope you have a chance to pick them up! I like to think of these books as “vampire procedurals.” They feature a spunky heroine and a group of her friends and colleagues, who are trying to prepare for the unfortunate possibility of a coming conflict between vampires and/or humans and/or shifters, etc., etc. Much like J.D. Robb’s In Death books, I tried to create a cast of main characters who work together to deal with the supernatural issues that face them, with, of course, some humor and romantic tension along the way.

Hi, Lisa. I’m currently reading Echo in the Bone by Diana Gabaldon. I LOVE the Outlander books, so I’m trying to read slowly and savor it. :) I’m also a huge fan of Rachel Caine’s Weather Warden series and, of course, J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood.

As for music, it really depends. Lately, I tend to write with the TV on in the background. However, yesterday I finished the draft for TWICE BITTEN, the third Chicagoland Vampires book. I was at Starbucks for about three and a half hours, and the entire time I listened to “Alone” from last week’s episode of GLEE on repeat. Over and over and over again. I’m not sure why it worked, but it got me through a little writer’s block so that I could get the final scene written! (And that version of the song is AWWWWESOME. It has a great powerful moment, and a really strong sense of longing, that helped me get out what I needed to say).

My question: When you started writing the Chicagoland series - did you already know how many books you want to write in the series or are you just hoping to see where it goes? Is the ending already planned out?

Thank you, and lots of luck!

I was wondering who the original target audience was for this series. When I saw the cover and title for Some Girls Bite, I thought it was YA. I’m about 3 times the age of the average YA reader, but if the blurb/excerpt is good, I’ll read it. When I read the book though I thought it was geared more towards adults.

    Looking forward to FNB too!

    Hi Ms. Neill,

Thanks for the answer on my previous questions. Even if you couldn’t answer because it might be a spoiler, it’s still exciting to know that the little items hinted at in your first book will unfold into plot goodies in your future ones. :)

I have one more question from Chapter Four, “The Things That Go Bump in the Night… Are Probably Registered Voters in Cook County,” of your first book, “Some Girls Bite,”: why is calling a fourth-class sorcerer a witch a “…pretty big insult…” (p. 97)?

    Thanks Again,

Chloe, first off, I absolutely LOVE your Chicagoland Vampires series! :D Even though this genre has really exploded all over the place recently, you’ve somehow managed to create a wonderfully-fresh new character with her very own distinctive “voice”–so how awesome is that?! (And a big hallelujah for giving us a different setting, as well.)

Question: Do you have plans to keep Merit’s grandfather part of the series? (To me, including a senior citizen–and making him a such a smart, cunning chap–further sets you apart from your peers. It’s really a great touch; the chemistry and love between the pair of them is nice, but there’s also plenty of room for tension between them as their jobs and needs diverge…)

I have just stumbled on your work lately but I am very interested. I put them on my TBR list right away. I can’t wait to get started on them.

My question is do you have a book that was harder to write then any of the rest or one that sticks out above the rest for some reason?

@Noar7 - Yes. The ending is already planned out. The mysteries from book to book are plotted individually, but I already have the overall arc of the series in mind.

    @ElaineG - I’m honestly not sure. :)

@EllenV - Hello, teacher and class! Thanks for joining me today! And the answer is YES, absolutely. I wanted Merit to be capable and strong, but also have some very human strengths and weaknesses. And, of course, a cast of supportive friends.

@Stephanie - I picked Chicago because I wanted to utilize a setting that hadn’t been used yet in vampire fiction, and because I wanted a city with great architecture, food, politics and history. Chicago fit the bill! No booksignings scheduled in Chicago right now, although I do have a signing just north of there in Racine, WI in January. Check my events page for more info: http://chloeneill.com/events.htm

@Linda - Um, I celebrated by writing the guest blog above, if that counts. :)

@Van - I think I’d prefer to stick to human, although having the ability to fly would be pretty sweet. Merit was the heroine I’d always wanted to read about–a vampire in her own right, very smart, a little bookish, but a girl who learns that she has amazing, untapped potential. Who doesn’t want to be that girl?? ;)

@Anne - Merit is 28, so I recommend the books for readers from age 16 to 100. My new young adult series, the Dark Elite novels, feature a 16 year-old heroine.

    @JessicaT - You’re on a roll today! That one’s also a spoiler. :)

@Diana - Absolutely. Merit’s grandfather is a huge part of her life, so he’ll remain a part of the series.

@Ria - Oooh, tough one. I really like the intense world building of the Black Dagger Brotherhood books, so I’d probably go with those.

Thanks to all of you who are looking into my books for the first time! I hope you enjoy them! (And you can also read the first chapters of Some Girls Bite and Friday Night Bites on my web site - http://chloeneill.com)

@Peggi - Interesting question. I’m not sure I’ve thought about that before. Probably my Mom, who raised me and my brother as a single parent. Go Mom!

@SusanH - Thanks for the questions. I’m going to refer you to my answers above, which included the answers to both! :)

@ElizabethT- Great question. Anything by Judy Blume, Bevery Cleary and Lois Lenski. I also LOVED the Little House on the Prairie books, which were the first books my Mom read to me as a child. The “Three Investigators” and the like were also favorites. I think the biggest impact they had on me was the Little House books. Those things had the greatest description–you really felt like you were in the house (or out in the middle of a prairie winter). I try for the same feel.

@Fallon - My plan is to continue writing paranormal, but I’d love to be able to write a Regency romance one day.

@Raquel - Not really. I have a horribly short attention span, so I’ll get comfy in the big recliner in which I sit with my laptop, sit cross-legged, check e-mail, and go from there. Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn’t, and I’ll have to head out to a coffeehouse so I won’t be as distracted.

@Crystal - Yes, and yes. Merit is a strong-willed vampire who will eventually learn to take care of herself, but there are plenty of alpha males in the book for folks who like that kind of thing.

@Jennifer - I have the personality of the character in mind, and then I wait until “their name” pops up. The name usually chooses the character.

@JacquelineL - Three books currently under contract for the Dark Elite series; I’m not sure how many ultimately planned. Merit loves Lamy rollerball and felt tip pens, as do I.

@SandyG - She largely resembles Merit, although when folks see the new cover art for TWICE BITTEN, they’re going to see Merit 2.0. :)

@Lisa - Shifters play a larger role in FRIDAY NIGHT BITES (book 2), than in SOME GIRLS BITE (Book 1), and TWICE BITTEN (Book 3) features lots of shifter adventures. They are front and center in that one.

@KatieD - I’m going to refer to you to my answer on this question above. Short answer–not really. Unless watching TV and sitting cross-legged counts. :)

    Hmm questions are hard.
Actually something I was thinking about the other day after reading a different series.
Animals (dogs and cat’s in particular) are often written about as companions to witch’s, vampires etc. Have you ever thought about that and (the real quesiton :) ) if so have you given any thought about their life span.
Surely for an imortal to get attached to an animal with a short life span it would be a real issue. A lot of these sort of books talk about the trauma of being friends with humans but cats and dogs would be worse.
So I’m kinda putting out there the thought that somehow being assocaiated with an imortal lenghtens their live? Not sure on that one or even could there be vampire cats and dogs?

@BeccaR - I’d like to write eight books, but we’ll see how that goes. My favorite movie is probably Shaun of the Dead, although I love the A&E version of Pride & Prejudice. Merit’s favorite movie would probably be something like King Arthur, since she studied romantic medieval literature.

@HeatherC - Hi, there! Sorry I missed you! :) I got started because I read tons and tons of PR, UF and historical romance, and I was beginning to run out of books (in series) to read (I only read series at the time). So, I played around with a fan fiction idea for a few weeks, then decided I might as well take a stab at writing. I wanted to write UF/PN since that’s also what I read. I’m a fan-girl turned writer. :)

@emmad - Interesting question. My sorcerers don’t have animal familiars, so I’m not really sure what their life span would be. I don’t have any immediate plans to write about pets, although I can see how the loss of a pet (just like a human loved one) would be difficult.

Totally random question, if you were “asked” to become a vampire, one of Ethan’s! ;) would you do it? Why or why not?

If you were to inject a famous person into your storyline as a regular character, who would you choose and why?

I read Some Girls Bite as soon as it came out and I’m planning on stopping at the bookstore tomorrow after work to buy Friday Night Bites. I loved Some Girls Bite and have been waiting very impatiently for Friday Night Bites. I guess my question is, Who is your favorite male character in the series?

I had to RSVP for these. I am fascinated by the whole PR/UF distinction. I tend to lean more to the Urban Fantasy, but find some Paranormal Romance interesting, and read it as well. Our local bookseller in Vacaville, Ca has taken a section of her shelves where she puts both genres together. We then don’t have to paw through both SciFi/Fantasy and Romance sections to get our reading fix. I really do appreciate her efforts. This also goes to show how truly popular these books are.

Hmmm…that’s interesting on how you got started. I was honestly thinking about the same thing myself. I have this idea swimming around in my head. However, there is this little voice that keeps telling me that I’m crazy since I’m an engineer with a 10 word vocabulary. How do you get the devil voice to away?

  72. Comment by Chloe — October 5, 2009 @ 1:07 pm

@Jessica S - Yes, because (for better or worse) I trust him. Although he certainly has his quirks, as a boss I think he’d challenge me to be better than I thought I possibly could be.

@MedievalGrrl - Interesting question. But I actually don’t think I’d put anyone in the real world in there, because I’ve already created my own little world of Chicago celebs, including Mayor Tate and Merit’s parents.

@CrystalS - Oooh, I can’t pick just one! Ethan has a lot of interesting, complicated dynamics that make him fun to write. Catcher’s gruff sarcasm is enjoyable, as is Jeff’s wide-eyed naivete. I had a lot of fun writing Gabriel Keene, head of one of the shifter packs, in TWICE BITTEN. He’s also pretty complicated, for a man who prides himself on not caring…

@BookSplot - I did a lot of neighborhood research, and though substantively about the kinds of neighborhoods these particular folks would want to live in. Ex: Ethan would want old school wealth and history (Hyde Park), while Merit and Mallory (technically, Mal’s aunt) would want a more eclectic neighborhood in Wicker Park. Not sure yet about the RT book fair. Still checking my schedule.

@Jeanette - I know generally where I want the series to go, so I try to treat each individual book as one step toward that endpoint. Inspiration can come from anywhere–books, music, stuff I see on the street, neighborhoods, or just logic (i.e., what would these characters do in this situation?).

@HeatherC - I have NO clue on that one. Less than 24 hours before FRIDAY NIGHT BITES hits shelves, the devil voice is currently whispering “Sophomore slump! Sophomore slump!” I’ve heard it said that bravery is doing the thing you’re afraid to do…even though you’re afraid to do it. I think writers have to face down that same fear…and keep writing.

    Chloe,

Thanks for taking the time out to chat with us!

I have yet to read your books, but they’ve been working their way up on my huge TBR pile.

I was wondering how long you’ve been writing and how many novels and/or short stories you wrote before you landed a contract (or agent).

Also, any advice for a aspiring author? I know there are no “magical tips”, but if you could go back and tell yourself one or two things about the biz, what would it be?

    Thanks again Chloe!

@LisaB - The first thing I wrote (in 2005) was a PR manuscript, which I sent out to one publisher and one agent and received a rejection from each. The second thing I wrote was Some Girls Bite, which I sent to Penguin and got a good response (obviously). I then contacted two agents, with Lucienne Diver being my first choice. She said yes, and that was that. :) As for advice: Keep writing, editing, writing and editing. You can’t fix a blank page, as Nora Roberts says.

@VeronicaF - It was a happy accident. Long story short, my agent asked me whether I’d considered writing a YA novel, and I said, well, “Well, not really, but wouldn’t it be cool if such-and-such happened in a YA novel?” The rest is history. And FIRESPELL is the first book in a series.

@AmandaL & Lisa N- Since your Qs regarding my favorite/inspiring authors are answered above, I’m going to skip along to the next questions. But thanks for your questions!

JessicaS - TWICE BITTEN will be released in July 2010.

StephanieS - I’m not sure if it’s my favorite spot, but my most common spot is my couch, in PJs, with the TV on. Can’t offer up my secret identity. :)

Seri-New names come from pretty much anywhere. TV, radio, nonfiction books, baby books, baby name web sites…If I find one that’s interesting, I write it down on a list.

Raonaid-Interesting question. I’m not sure Steinbeck would be a genre/vampire fan (probably not), but he has an amazing ability to offer up earthy description. I love that.

While I have not read your books yet, I do already have both of them. As I hate to wait for the next book in a series, I tend to wait until I’ve got 2 or 3 to read. I have heard great things about the series. I especially can’t wait to read “Firestarter”. While a long way from a YA, I have enjoyed most of the ones on the market.
I love the idea that so many exceptional paranormal writers are writing for the YA market. I had always felt this was an area that would help turn kids on to reading and not only benefit the writers now but also later as they make reading a part of their lifetime experience. Can you tell us about your YA book “Firespell”? Any chance it will be a series?

@Lisa - Yes, Firespell is the first in my Novels of the Dark Elite series. It follows the adventures of Lily, a 16 year old sent to boarding school in Chicago, where she discovers that magic isn’t limited to fairy tales…

@ColleenG- First part of your question is answered above. :) I’m not sure it’s an issue of motivation. It’s just what I do. I like words. :) No booksignings in Canada yet; I generally have to be invited by a bookstore before I can schedule an appearance.

@JessicaS - This one is answered above, as well. :) I wrote a two-paragraph synopsis for FIRESPELL over lunch one day. It all snowballed from there.

@Margay - The series is pretty much all in my head at this point. It’s like its own neighborhood–and, of course, I SGB and now FNB to refer to, so it’s not that hard to keep track.

@Tamara - Hi there. Thanks for the question. I actually answered this one above, so I’m going to refer you upward!

    Hi (again) Ms. Neill,

They say that the third time’s a charm, so I’m hoping that I break my streak of spoilers with the following questions. :D

You noted in “Some Girls Bite” that the vampires in America and Western Europe (excepting the rogues of course) are arranged into Houses. How is the Greenwich Presidium, the governing body of vampires for that area, structured? Is the Greenwich Presidium made up of the Masters of various Houses, or is it completely independent from the Houses? Do the vampires of the Greenwich Presidium meet daily, or do they arrange and meet at specific times of the year? Does the Greenwich Presidium meet with the governing bodies of other areas?

    Thanks Again,
    Jessica T

(I guess I should also note that in addition to my above questions I did RSVP; that I spread the word about this event on my wall at facebook.com (http://www.facebook.com/HasTheLastLaugh?ref=nf), that I became a friend of Chloe Neill on facebook.com [name: HasTheLastLaugh] that I voted and commented in the “The Vampire’s Assistant Movie Giveaway”; and that I voted and commented in round one and round two of the “Favorite Paranormal Author of the Year Award”)

@Kristianna - Hmm. I was surprised by her vast love of chocolate. That was a new one. :) As for Ethan, I’m constantly surprised by his capacity for self-deception. Sorry I can’t elaborate on that. :)

@JessicaT - The GP, as an organization, is separate from the other national, governing councils. As a general rule, these groups don’t meet together, although the members may communicate informally or in times of crisis. Members of the GP can be, but are not required to be Masters. The head of the GP (Darius West) and his staff keep office hours; the remaining GP members can keep office hours at the GP office, but as some are also heads of Houses, they generally do not.

@VirginiaC - Not really. It’s more that they’re the movie playing in my head, and I’m writing down the dialogue.

@Beth B - At this point, I mostly leave the TV on in the background, usually the Travel Channel.

@Renee - I knew I wanted to write about a female vampire, and that I wanted the vampires to be organized into Houses. I got an idea for Ethan’s character, and the rest is history!

@Kristianna - What a thoughtful question! :) The number of books they buy will be determined by sales. Thus, to keep the series running, we have to keep the sales coming in! I’ve posted a blog entry with some specific “street team” marketing tips, if you’re interested:http://chloeneill.blogspot.com/2009/09/nine-days.html. And thanks for asking!

    @AliciaH - Chicagoland Vampires #4. It’s going to be good. ;)

@Crystal - It was deliberate in that he isn’t my favorite character, but that’s no reflection on him or on plotting for the future.

@MicheleH - I had a great Halloween last year. Mr. Neill and I decorated the house, then shared some food with friends while the trick-or-treaters came by. Lots of fun!

@VickiB - Television as background noise, usually. If it helps at all, I also have upcoming signings in North Little Rock and Little Rock, AR (not too far from the Little Rock AFB in Jacksonville, AR) and in Racine and Greenfield, WI.

@darchole - I know where I want Merit to end up, and how I think I’ll get her there. But I’m also open to the natural flow of the story as the characters develop.

@Debby - I live in the midwest, but not in Chicago proper. Winters are plenty awful over here, though. :)

@JessicaT - That would be a small spoiler, so no go, I’m afraid. :)

@DonnaS - I’ve got 8 planned, but 4 under contract, so we’ll see what happens in between. Steinbeck is my answer to the author past or present question, and I’ve got a slightly longer discussion of that in an answer above. :)

@iokijo: Hmm. That’s a hard one. I always wanted to have a big cat (like the tiger on He-Man), so probably that.

@TiahB - That one’s also in the mix above, but I’ll give you the succinct answer: I used to hate writing, but decided in 2005 that I wanted to tell a story, and so I did! I’ve always been a UF/PN reader, so that’s what I wanted to write about.

Alright, everyone. I’m heading off to bed. Thank you all for dropping by to ask questions. I hope to have a few minutes tomorrow to drop in and say hello.

I just sent a friend request on facebook. It sounds like we have similar musical tastes. Do you ever accompany your books with a music playlist? I often listen to music in the background when reading and often the music will affect the tone/mood. I love being able to listen to the music the author intended to connect to the book on that level as well.

    Thanks,

  146. Comment by Chloe — October 6, 2009 @ 10:08 am

Good morning everyone! Just taking a few minutes over lunch to catch up!

@Lesley- Excellent questions. Fight scenes are still the hardest–it’s hard for me to imagine movement in 3D, which makes them hard to write. I watch lots of YouTube sparring videos for ideas.

@BeverlyG - That’s a tough one. I’m not sure that I’d go back to any era. There are many that I find fascinating–WWII-era Arkansas (my home state), Regency-era England, the American Civil War era–but I’m thankful enough for today’s conveniences that I think I’d stick around here.

@SharonK - I think all of them had their ups and downs. TWICE BITTEN has a goodly number of training/fight scenes, which are difficult, but I’m really happy with the plotting. The mystery plot in FRIDAY NIGHT BITES took some tweaking. It’s less that the books are hard to write than that the editing may take a while when it’s done. :)

@Ashley N - It takes me about four months (with two heavy-writing months in there) to write a manuscript. My daily word count depends upon how close I am to deadline; generally, it’s between 500 and 1,500 words on weekdays, and 1,000 to 2,500 on weekends.

@Aori - Hmmm. I guess I’d say that humor is a personality trait. I’m very sarcastic and I try to be witty, so I think I write that way because it comes natural to me.

@LoriT - Great question, and I actually just did a whole blog entry on the transition to young adult: http://www.deadlinedames.com/?p=1774

@TheresaD - I haven’t to date, but that’s mostly a timing issue. I keep playlists for each novel in iTunes, and that’s a great idea–for me to put them online or include them in a novel as accompaniments I’ll put that on my to do list. :)

@SummerG - Yes, Merit’s name will be revealed, and relatively soon. You know, there’s one big sticky question that I think was raised in Some Girls Bite. No one has asked me about it outright, but I know it’s been discussed on my Yahoo Group. I can’t say what it is, unfortunately, but it will also get answered as the series progresses. :)

@Heidi - I wanted my vampires to be a little different from the norm (no lace, no velvet, no men-mesmerizing-helpless-ladies), so I thought about how vampires who’d lived in Chicago as humans might have acted, and I went from there.

@Carol - I’ve been to a handful of local scifi/fantasy conventions, but that’s it so far. I hope to be much more present in the convention scene in the coming years, but scheduling has been difficult (since I have a day job).

@Tabitha - My deadlines for the CV and DE series are generally about six months apart, so I’m on a two-per-year schedule, which is very doable (although that also means that I’m editing two books a year and writing two books a year). I expect that will continue into the immediate future, but I’m not sure about long term.

    Hi Ms. Neill,

Congratulations on the release of “Friday Night Bites”! I know you’re probably insanely busy today, but (as I’m not-so patiently waiting for the UPS delivery person to drop off my copy of FNB) I hoped you might have time to answer a couple more questions about “Some Girls Bite”.

First, is Peter, the Cadogan guard, the reason the Chicago River nymphs were so upset in “Chapter Thirteen: Two’s Company - Three’s a Madhouse”?

Second, in “Chapter Six: If at First You Don’t Succeed, Fall Down, Down Again,” that regarding telepathy, Merit will, “… only be able to communicate with [Ethan] - as [her] Master…” (p. 133). Why then is a vampire other Ethan able to communicate mind-to-mind with Merit in “Chapter Fourteen: Love is a Battlefield. So is the City of Chicago,”?

    Thanks Again & Best Wishes,

@Raine - A vampire, and a big ol’ copy of the Canon of the North American Houses, Desk Reference. (Slightly lame insider joke there.) :)

@Angie - All over the place. TV, funny stories, magazine articles. Some are mine (sarcasm and love of chocolate). Sometimes I’ll hear a quote and think, “OMG, Ethan would *totally* say that.”

@Eva - Um, No. 1 is keep writing. You will get better, and it’s a heckuva lot easier to edit something a paragraph than to edit a blank page. (paraphrasing Nora Roberts there). No. 2, treat it like a business. Write a little every day, edit a little every day, sharpen your grammatical skills, market. And good luck!

@Jessica - No, it wasn’t Peter, just another random boyfriend. As for your second question–yes, those things seem contrary, which is why Merit thinks its weird. More than that, I can’t say. :)

@Bea - Probably the various and sundry other PN and UF authors that I read were my inspiration. I’m not sure anyone got me started per se; I just decided I’d give it a try!

@Chris - Hi, there! I would love to watch vampire shows (and read more vampire books), but I decided that since I was going to start writing about them, I’d stop watching/reading them so that what I read/watch doesn’t influence what I write. And, I do get plenty of vamp drama from Merit, et al.

@ElieN - I’m a horrible dog-earer. I like that Kindle returns to the place you left off. That’s kinda handy. Favorite color…Probably that color of an incredibly blue spring sky, where the shade is so intense it almost seems unreal. (Incidentally, that’s also the color of Jason’s eyes–Jason is a love interest in FIRESPELL).

@Marnie - I would be Merit. That’s why I wrote SGB (and that’s why I wrote it in first person), so that the reader could imagine themselves in Merit’s position. She’s brave and funny, but she has human weaknesses as we all do. She has amazing skills, but isn’t too sure how to use them. She has a loyal friend and grandfather, and just enough drama to keep things interesting…

@Joye - I don’t read the dialogue outloud, but I do hear it in my head as I write. No testing, really. I have friends who’ve read early drafts, but they tend to comment on big picture type of stuff. Writing dialogue seems to be the one thing that comes pretty natural right now. I just imagine what the characters would say–how they’d actually speak–if they were having a real conversation. And then I write it down, grammatically incorrect or otherwise.

    Hello Chloe!
I know it’s kinda late, but I only managed to have some free time now. I really liked Some Girls Bite, but my questions have already been answered by now, or they’d lead to major spoilers… :-p so I just wanted to drop by and say hi, and thank you for coming here at BBB!

@annalisa - I have two additional series planned, but I haven’t yet had time to write them down. Some day, hopefully, I will.

@AuroraM - I wanted to be a teacher. Not so much because I had noble ambitions, but because teacher’s got to play with paper and stickers and stamps and clipboards and lesson plans and *paper*. I loved paper. Still do, actually. :)

THANKS everyone for dropping by and participating in this fabulous event. Have a great evening, and I hope you have a chance to check out FRIDAY NIGHT BITES (and, of course, that you enjoy it!)

I finished reading FNB the same day that I got it! It was really good! You know I just happen to come by Some Girls Bite when I was looking in the bookstore, and I am so glad that I got it!!!! So Some Girls Bite was your first book? How did you decide that you want to write, and how did you get started on writing a book?

Oh wow. I see, hmm then I can kiss humor good bye. I read Friday Night Bites and it was fantastic. Yummy. (Having a library card helps…a lot) Would be nice to own though. And I side with BECCA R. on its releases.
The books are too delicious and are devoured in one setting. I will be patiently waiting for the next book!
I have voted on numbers 5 and 6. and I have added on yahoogroups and myspace.

Apparently the myspace thing is down. ;.; I have another question(s):
Do you read Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Romance yourself? Who are the authors? And which one do you enjoy reading the most?

    Hi Chloe,

Thanks for answering my previous question! I have another one if you don’t mind me asking : When are the scenes you find easy to write? Did it happen right away or did you get better with practice?

Forgot to add that I voted for the Vampire’s Assistant Movie Giveaway and Favorite Paranormal Fiction Author of the Year - Round 2.
