Celtic Sacrifice by Sheryl Brennan
Ceana is only six years old when her mother passes, but even then, she knew she was destined for an important role within the clan. Her mother’s people, the O’Connor, wish to take Ceana back to their village to begin her training, but her father refuses. The O’Connor are angry and disappointed, vowing to return when Ceana is of age. Her clan, the O’Hagan, are dedicated to the ancient ways and are determined to keep the English out of Ireland. Ceana’s brothers, Deaghlan and Glaisne, are valiant warriors, but her twin brother, Cailean, has turned his back on the old ways and has become a priest, to the chagrin of the family. Ceana’s healing arts have become legendary, and on her eighteenth birthday, the O’Connor come to collect her, as they promised years before.
Ceana’s training as a Druid priestess progresses rapidly, and she rises easily through the ranks. Her divination skills improve, and she is troubled by the reoccurring vision of a raven that seems to destroy her beloved Ireland. Now that Ceana is fulfilling what she believes is her destiny, she wonders about a prophecy made by the High Priestess: “I see the healing magic for the clan O’Connor as two from Una become one. There is a powerful destiny intended from the union. It will bring back to your clan what was once lost.” Does the prophecy mean Ceana should marry within the clan? Or is there a hidden meaning, something that Ceana cannot even imagine? Is she meant to be the Celtic Sacrifice that will reunite the clan?
Although I liked the story, the author’s usage of incorrect words (“peels” of laughter; “shear” dresses) bothered me and made me question the accuracy of historic details. I found the characters to be fairly well developed, and appreciated that the religious conflict throughout Ireland at the time was shown so clearly within Ceana’s home. I applauded Ceana’ strength of character and determination to fulfill the prophecy and live her life in a way that was pleasing to the Goddess. The ending was unexpected but believable and does manage to fulfill the prophecy.
