Interview:
Hi Sapphire!
Welcome to Bitten by Books, we are excited to have you here today!
I would like to thank you taking the time to join us for the question and answer session with our readers. It has been very interesting to get to know more about you and what makes you tick as a writer! Readers, if you haven’t done so already please stop by and get your copy of Sapphire’s book Being Familiar With a Witch.
BBB: What are the most challenging aspects of writing?
SP: Trying to take what they say is 6-7 storylines that is known to the world and make it different for the reader.
BBB: Do you consider your book latest book Being Familiar With a Witch paranormal fiction or paranormal erotica? and do you think it is important to distinguish between the two?
SP: It’s erotic, but it is also paranormal fiction. The only different between erotic and sweet is you can put in a suggestion of two people making love in sweet, while erotic is more blatant with words.
BBB: If you had to go back in time to change one thing in your writing career, what would it be?
SP: To start off writing books and short stories when I was 17, not just poetry. I thought I had this plan back then, of publishing poetry (which I did) and go on from there.
BBB: What is the most ridiculous thing that you have thought about doing to any of your characters but never did?
SP: Honestly, I never thought of doing anything other than what my characters have done.
BBB: What made you think of an alien species of vampires? Do you have any plans to go back to that world?
SP: One day I might, as I did start on a sequel to Crimson Promise. It would be about the hybrid vamp child of Na’Lessa and Victor.
BBB: How do you keep track of your world building?
SP: I write down what I have done in the first book and always check back to that when writing the second one. Like I’ve been doing with the sequel to Beast Magic that I have been working on. The same will happen to Being Familiar With a Witch’s sequel, too. There may be a deviation because it is logical and the characters want it, as do I, but in the long run I try to stick to what I started.
BBB: What do you feel are the benefits of the new electronic readers such as Kindle 2 or Sony Digital Book Reader to the environment?
SP: I think that it is a benefit to the environment. I still read print books, but i also have a Sony Digital Book Reader, too. With the Earth having problems due to the rain forests being lessened each day, anything humans can do to help the planet is always a good thing.
BBB: What impact do electronic readers create on the bottom line for authors in the end? Do you feel they have a negative impact or positive, or no impact at all that you can see?
SP: I think positive. Because it’s another way for readers to read you, maybe if they can’t afford a print copy of your book at the time, they can afford the cheaper version of your book in digital. I advocate all forms of reading.
BBB: Can you tell us about Being Familiar With a Witch and the general storylines that drives it?
SP: BFWW has the story of Tina, an ordinary mortal woman who works in a bookstore. She loves her life. But she is the promised one for the current Armageddon. If she does not become the witch she is meant to be, then she will die at the hands of the demon army. And Hell will win over Heaven and the Mortal Realm will be Hell on Earth literally. It will take Charun, her Familiar coded to her DNA, to convince her she must make love with him to let loose her magical powers.
BBB: What else do you currently have in the works? When can we expect your next book?
SP: Right now it’s the sequel to Beast Magic which is in first person and erotic male/male paranormal romance with wereleopards. Then it’s back to Tina and Charun in their sequel. Once both are done and edited they will be submitted to my editor at Phaze. Then it will be up to them.
I do have an erotic paranormal romance short , “Ain’t Nothin’ Like Succubus Lovin’, accepted by Phaze Books and to be out sometime in 2010. There’s humor in this, something I was surprise I could do.
BBB: If one only one of your stories could be made into movie or tv show, which one would you love to see come to life and who would your dream cast be?
SP: Being Familiar With a Witch definitely. Who would readers like to see cast in the parts? That would be interesting to see what they think.
BBB: Where do you see the paranormal genre headed? Can you see it slowing down in the near future, or do you think that the immediate future is pretty bright for it?
SP: I think it will keep going. Nonfiction ghost books that I write under another name sell super well, plus horror and fantasy I write and paranormal shows are popular on TV and in movies, too. There’s something about monsters and ghosts and vampires and shapeshifters that fascinates humankind. No, I don’t think it will slow down.
BBB: Do you have any personal traits that you have written into the characters of your books?
SP: I am sure there is. Nothing Mary Sue in their perfect. I am not perfect. But writers draw from themselves and people they know in build these characters. No, I don’t see a famous actor or actress when I see my characters, but traits come from somewhere and it’s me and others I know.
BBB: Do you plan to write anymore Fairy Tale spin offs
SP: I Might do that one day. But not at the moment.
BBB: Buffy the Vampire Slayer or True Blood?
SP: Gosh, I love both. Can’t I say both?
BBB: If you could have dinner with ANY literary figure in history, who would it be and why?
SP: How about three at one table (two dead and one is alive): Edgar Allan Poe, Shirley Jackson and Ray Bradbury? They influenced me growing up. Maybe throw in H. P. Lovecraft, too. I like to pick their brains, get to know them.

Carol. I enjoy reading what I write, under either name I use. Love paranormal romances (even historical ones too, mainly medieval), horror, science fiction, fantasy, urban fantasy, poetry and nonfiction ghost books.
Elaine, I like to write at my desk, in front of my computer. Though I have written by long hand in cafes an d restaurants and Barnes and Noble coffee shops. I have even wrote on my laptop in my room at conventions. LOL

Hi Sapphire! Thanks for being here w/ us today! I was wondering what authors most inspired you? Also, how much do you believe in the paranormal existing in our world?
[Reply]
Heather,
I love to read them and anyway, as Pamela K. Kinney I had published horror set in urban landscapes. One was Dangerous City in Werewolf Magazine. That is now a reprint to come in a collection of short horror stories and a poem by Pamela K. Kinney that will be published by under the Moon.
I still write poetry, too. Just not as often. I had a poem accepted for a horror anthology. Obviously this will be by Pamela K. Kinney. Though submitted stories years ago, finally got my first acceptance in 2004. My first erotic romance were in 2005. Though the anthology never panned out and the stories returned. One, To Teach an Ancient God is now a free read you can get at All Romance eBooks at http://allromanceebooks.com/product-toteachanancientgod-8477-180.html the other, Shadow Lover, is in Phaze Books anthology, Coming Together: Under Fire. Both are fantasies.

Thanks, blackrose37! Loved it too. When a title comes to me, it comes to me.

Lisa,
Gosh, alot. I have a stack by my side of the bed that is hard to read as I write too. Right now, trying to finish Chosen to Die by Lisa Jackson as it’s a library book. Then I got a couple horror books from an author I met at a book signing this past Sunday who gave them to me. I also have laurell K. Hamilton’s latest–from library.
Can’t think of anything I like a fan to ask.

Warm and Fond Greetings Sapphire (my birthstone!). Thanks so much for coming to Bittenbybooks! You are a new-to-me author but I’m sure I’ve heard your name before. I think it was a recommendation.
Oooh, are you a ghost hunter too?
I have a friend down in Texas that is nearly obsessed with ghost hunting and watching TAPS (Ghost Hunter, trying to get her to watch Ghost Adventures which I feel is WAY better. Alright, so the one guy Zak is built and hot). One of these days I like to get her up here in West Virginia, my one Used book store which at one time was a library in its time is reported on being haunted.)
Do you watch Ghost Hunters or Ghost Adventures?

Fallon,
I started making costumes in 1973. Wearing them to conventions then, too. I made costumes of original design, but never any lately of any of my characters. Sorry. Lately, except for some historical, it’s been reproductions of television or movies costumes–like Star Wars and Babylon 5. Or pirates.
[Reply]
Cyd J,
I loved doing Being Familiar With a Witch. Just got into writing Tina’s and Charun’s story.
As Pamela, I love doing the nonfiction ghost books, since I learn a lot of things I never knew before, like history or unique myths and legends.
[Reply]
Rachel,
Yes, I do paranormal investigating. If not when researching and footwork on my books, then with a local group here. The spookiest would be when we stayed at Natural Bridge Hotel and I woke up at 2:30PM after a long day of doing a lot of walking and more for Haunted Virginia to noises like paper rustling and things being picked up. To this day I think two entities were in there with my sleeping husband and me. I used my digital recorder and told the first time whoever was there wanted to talk to me to use it. I got a man’s voice. I only got a half hour of sleep from 2:30-6PM and even when I felt the spirits were gone when went to the room’s bathroom and heard the sink and then the shower next door come on, I found out later no one had rented that rooom so it was empty at that time!
I’ve done couple of investigations with the group I am with a local bar and Ferry Plantation in Virginia Beach back in August. I can’t say the name of the bar, just in historical Chesterfield, Va. area. as owner of shopping center does not want people knowing of the hauntings. but I will post the link to my Pamela K. Kinney blog for those want to see the photos I took, from the bar: http://pamelakkinney.blogspot.com/2009_08_01_archive.html it is the August 23rd posting, Bars have More than Alcoholic Spirits!
As for Ferry, a lot of activity happened there. We stayed there all night. Lots of evps (voices on our digital recorders), voices we heard lout right, dishes rattling when neither I nor the other investigator, Cristian, were on the other end of the room, orbs in photos and on camera, weird, creepy thing peeking in window of main door caught on camera, and things moving when no one nearby and we all saw it. Shadows caught on my photos too–esp. one we all knew n o one stood between me and the other person.
Right now, I am contracted to do a third book on Williamsburg, Charles City County, James City County (Jamestown in this county) and Yorktown.
[Reply]
Tracey,
I would love to do a ghost tour in the British isles or Gettysburg. I heard from many others how haunted Gettysburg is.
[Reply]
Hi Sapphire! When you’re writing, do you prefer background music or silence?
I think I RSVP’d!
[Reply]
Patsy,
Yes, many times since I was a kid. I can even say I saw full apparitions. Once as a teen I saw Mrs. Whaley of the Whaley House in San Diego when I peeked in window that looked in on the courtroom. And in my own place one night. It was a man in modern clothing and he’d been haunting our place for three months, mainly cigarette smoking odors and other things, until I woke up one night and spied him at the door, staring at us. Now, he scared me a lot. All I could dig up was this man who committed suicide in a place a few doors down.

I definite agree with you on the environmental benefits to supporting the ebook industry. My buying habits have definitely changed in the last 6/7 years; I tend to buy ebooks more than print. If you book was turned into a movie, I would love to see Rose McGowan as Tina & Paul Walker as Charun.
It was wonderful to meet you today…I hope to read more of your work….

Amanda,
First, I do believe in the paranormal–like ghosts. I had too many experiences growing up an d lately, not to. And there’s too many things unexplained in our world.
Authors that inspired me: Ray Bradbury, Shirley Jackson (her The Haunting of Hill House best ghost story ever), Nora Roberts. Madeleine L’Engle, JRR Tolkien, Edgar Allan Poe, H. P. Lovecraft, Anne McCaffrey, and many, many more. I also enjoy the current authors,ut these others were ones i read growing up through college.
[Reply]
Biki,
My favorite vampire from literature is Dracula. Favorite from TV: Barnabas Collins, since I watched Dark Shadows as a teen. I can’t wait for Johnny Depp as Barnabas though.

Patsy,
I loved Being Familiar with a Witch. I got it a while back. It was a great read…I will have to pick up your other stories.
If you could live the life of one of your characters for a day which one and why? Remember they would live your life for that day too?

Oops — I am sorry Sapphire, I wasn’t paying attention and wrote Patsy. I blame it on the Dayquil (its non-drowsy my cloudy brain!)
I do have one more question any hints on the sequel - I am curious about Tina and Charun.
[Reply]
Raonaid,
Thanks. It’s my birthstone too–the why of the pseudonym!
I watched both Ghost Hunters and Ghost Adventures when I can. When can catch any or not competing with something else on TV, watch anything paranormal.
The bookstore sounds cool-haunted, eh? Wonder if any of the local paranormal investigators in your area know about it?
[Reply]
Katie,
Generally, I do. I might go exercise at Curves in morning, then come home to shower and have breakfast and much needed coffee with creamer (now it’s pumpkin spice creamer), then watch Early Show and do some promoting. Then I write. This is during the week, during the day, so can spend time with hubby when he gets home from work. Though I have written at night and on weekends too, when need to finish a manuscript.
[Reply]
Ven,
Mostly silence. Though occasionally I have the small TV we have on in the computer/sewing room. But if the sounds bug me as I am writing, I mute it. Music for me is in my car when driving or when want to listen to it when relaxing in living room.
[Reply]
Marnie,
I am glad you enjoyed Being Familiar With a Witch.
Picking which character would be hard. I could say Tina, but then hubby would have to switch with Charun and being a demon Familiar might freak him out. LOL Though after getting her powers it might be hard for Tina to go back to being a mundane human being. Maybe the heroine of the unpublished urban fantasy novel I have finished This will not be by Sapphire, but Pamela. She is an ordinary woman in her later 30s and so becoming me won’t be so bad. LOL It’s not like she couldn’t handle my paranormal stuff, not after what she has to endure.
I have run into real spirits many time, so unless they are bad, I don’t mind. Most are regular ones. I’ve only had experiences I could count on my hand with the bad ones.
[Reply]
Sharon,
No, never been to Waverly yet. One day I hope to.
The first erotic vampire paranormal, Crimson Promise. Because I had to figure how to get around my ick of thinking a human woman couldn’t make love with what is a dead man. Ended up making that woman a living alien vampire.
[Reply]
Marnie,
LOL. That’s okay.
There will be a sequel to BFWW. Right now trying to finish sequel to Beast Magic, which will be an erotic male/male paranormal with wereleopards. One of the wereleopards is first mentioned in Beast Magic. All I can say is Tina and Charun might be taking on Lucifer himself this time.
And on B.M. sequel-hint: might be a ghost story too.

2. You mentioned a sequel to Being Familiar with a Witch (love the story idea BTW), do you know when?

Jackie,
I think so. Personally, I think people have the right to read whatever they like. And erotic romance and erotica is much a part of what people like to read as anything else.
[Reply]
Elie,
For being Familiar With a Witch? Yes, I gave my input what I thought should be on the cover and the cover artist did follow it well. More than well. Most of books I have out I had input, except for Wedded Magic. My wizard hero is young not old. LOL And Crimson Promise is part of a series that has a basic cover. When it was with its first publisher I did get what i ask for on my cover then. The artist had Na’Lesa dead on what she looked like.
[Reply]
Elie,
Oops! Forgot to answer your other question.
The sequel to BFWW? Right now, I got only a bit written and when able to get back to Beast magic’s sequel and finish it will get to work on BFWW’s. Maybe next year? or year after. Depends once turned in when Phaze can bring it out.

Take care and thank you for being here.
P.S. I am going to visit my son in Denver, CO this month for his “haunted mansion” party. He owns one of Denver’s original mansions - over 100 years old….and it has a few resident ghosts… can’t wait!

Sapphire - On the haunted book store, I believe so. I was telling a friend of mine about the place, how it once was a library before it became a used book store. So I thought I’d look on-line, to see if Trans Allegheny had pictures of their building to show my friend when I found the web site: http://users.wirefire.com/magick/new_page_18.htm
I know Marietta Ohio has ghost tours (that is not far from me); I’ve never attended any but it has caught my attention.

Deana,
My favorite topic to write about? I would say werewolves and shapeshifters. Though ghosts are a close second. I just like to write about monsters, ghosts and aliens. Which makes it all fun for me.
[Reply]
Beverly,
No, not really. I learn new things when I do an investigation. same as when researching for a ghost book or writing from my imagination a new story. I learn something new. And that is so cool.
[Reply]
Sue,
Thank you. And so cool about your son’s haunted mansion party. No parties for me, but I have been just two weeks ago in a haunted bed and breakfast historical house to interview the owner for next ghost book. It is Edgewood in Charles City County and was on Ghost Hunters in August! And no, the Confederate soldier seen and Lizzie did not show up in any of my photos. Haven’t checked my evps yet as recorded her to get all the information. Never know.

Lyda,
I like to watch paranormal movies, science fictions, fantasies, scary movies, a good romance one, some family films, and some comedies. Just bought Aliens Versus Monsters on Blu Ray as I saw it in theater in 3-D and my hubby hadn’t. And in October, I always pull out my good scary movies to watch and try to buy couple more to add to our DVD/Blu Ray collection. My fave is the 1963 The Haunting, based on Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson.

Raonaid,
Do take a ghost tour. They are fun and sometimes when you take pictures you might capture orbs or faces in windows that weren’t there. I did at the one my husband and I took in Colonial Williamsburg.
Ghost tours make a cool thing to do outdoors for October.

Dina,
Yes, erotic werewolf paranormal.
I do have couple sweet or light sexy stories, one is To Save the Day, a superhero romance short story as an Amazon Short on Amazon, which is only 49 cents. The other is To Teach an Ancient God, a free urban fantasy romance eread at All Romance eBooks. It’s Hades and Persephone love story updated to modern time.

Plus I did published in an ezine in 2007 a sweet medieval romance short story, “Old Friends.” So I can do sweet.
But I love doing the erotics.

Hey Sapphire,
It’s been really great reading the interview. I have been enjoying your Haunted VA and Haunted Richmond at work in what little free time I can carve out. They are both really good, and I’m going to have to take time to do a little exploring! It’s always nice to see a VA author doing well.
For the contest:
1. Friends with Sapphire on MySpace already
2. Friends with BBB on FB and MySpace, follow on Twitter, and member of Blood Bank
3. Posted this on FB and RSVP’d yesterday

Janice,
Thanks. Glad you’re enjoying the ghost books. One thing about them, is it’s nice to check the places out. same thing for anyone who might come to Virginia–kind of like tour books, but with ghosts and monsters. LOL
[Reply]
Sapphire - When I did the tour to oh it was an old theater. Each year they open it up to the public and do tours. The second year, while downstairs, my camera went haywire. We had bought new batteries for that day to take pictures and in the basement my camera refused to kick on, saying the battery was low. My seven year old freaked out down there at the same time. Some of my pictures had orbs. I had sent it to my ghost friend to check it out. This year they jipped us in the tour, we never went down to the basement.

I read Being Familiar With a Witch and really enjoyed the book.I would recommend people read this book. I am already a subscriber to Sapphire’s newletter.
Thanks Cheryl K

Raonaid,
When your camera’s battery went low like that, that meant something was using the batteries to give itself power. Why all those orbs. I learned to buy loads of batteries and bring plenty with me when take pictures at a haunted site.

Cheryl,
Thank you about liking BFWW.

Hi Sapphire,
If you could trade places with anyone, who would it be and why?

Good night, it is bedtime for me here. Since I must get up early tomorrow and get ready to go give a talk on the paranormal to a senior citizen’s group and hopefully do a book signing at 10:30AM, I’ll be sure to come here and answer anyone else who asks me anything.

Hello! I believe I RSVPed.
Okie here are the questions:

Bridget,
That’s a good question. Not really sure. I’ve done acting and writing gets in my characters’ heads, so you could say in a sense that I traded places with people already. I guess no one at this time.

Rose,
Yes, I read what I write. Let’s see Lora Leigh, Maggie Stiefvator, Carly Phillips, Charlaine Harris, Jude Mason, Skylar Sinclair, lots of other authors that my brain can’t think of this morning. Both epublished and print published.

Hi Sapphire. Sorry I made it here late. Yesterday was a crazy day!! I’ve been a fan since I downloaded Being Familiar earlier this year and we friended each other on MySpace awhile back. I have read your non-fiction ghost stories yet, but I love ghost stories. How do you research those and how does one become a paranormal investigater?
RSVP’d, already friends on Myspace and yahoo groups.

Dear Sapphire,
I see you wrote a book about true hauntings in Virginia. My family is from Lee County in Southwestern Virginia. I was wondering if there were any particular scary hauntings in that area??? I can’t wait to read Being Familiar with a Witch!!! I am one! Blessings to you,
Carol

Hi Sapphire
I’ve come across your name and books at a lot of sites but haven’t had the chance to read your work yet. I would love to and am looking forward to it.
Maybe you could stop by Fang-tastic Books sometime and talk about your books and ghost hunting. That would be “fang-tastic”.
So how did you start writing erotic romance and erotica? Did you set out to write erotica or did the stories evolve into erotic tales?
[Reply]
do you go to haunted houses for Halloween ?

Hi Sapphire!
Glad you could stop by BBB! What a fantastic interview! I look forward to reading more of your work in the future!

Medievalgrrl,
Yes, I researched the, then go to many of the places to conduct interviews with those working or living there, plus take pictures for the books. As for being a paranormal investigator, found my group on Meetup as a club at first. Check Meetup.com and put in paranoral groups in your area and see what comes up. There’s some on MySpace too, so check there.
You can even start one yourself. Make sure that when you do investigate, never alone. Not just for ghostly incidents and as backup what happened to you happened to them, but for your own safety. Most of investigating is done at night and darkness makes it hard to see something that might trip you or what.

Carol,
There are ghost stories all over, including from your area, too. Saltville has some black dog legends, along with Devil Monkeys (more in monster than ghots), plus other stories.
Not sure how far from where you are, but I’ll be signing at Blue Moon Antique Mall and Bookstore on the 17th 1-3PM. It’s 8230 Thomas Nelson Hwy. Lovington, Virginia 22949 434-263-8890. If you can, come by and say hi. We can talk more.

Roxanne,
I started with couple dark fantasy romances To Teach an Ancient God and Shadow Lover and submitted them to this anthology in 2005. Both were accepted. They would have been with works of some big name authors, too. Unfortunately, the publisher closed and all works returned to authors. The editor called them both erotic, though I never thought so. The following year, I wrote The Curse, an erotic medieval fantasy story. it got accepted for an ezine. It was definitely erotic. It was then I decided to do a pseudonym for my erotic romance.
Since I read them as much as regular paranormal romance and write genre fiction under my name Pamela K. Kinney, it wasn’t hard. Just had to read how other authors wrote the sex scenes so I could do it right. Sex is not that simple to write, believe it or not.
My stories evolved as I write them , though I know right off the bat what one will be, erotic or just a plain old story.
I’ll be sure to check your blog, Fang-tastic Books, out and contact you

if you ever want me to. Or just contact me at pamelakkinney@yahoo.com

I RSVP’d.
You are a new to me author.
I work at a small county library. There is a big interest in ghost stories. Does your book on Virginia ghost stories include stories from the southwestern part of the state? We are in NE TN, so those would be of interest to us.
[Reply]
Dear Sapphire,
I believe that all of us as “humans” feel a certain need to believe in things that everyone tells us could NOT possibly be real. At the same time–they say “Imagine and Do the impossible”…So–i guess my question is…would you react as one of your characters have reacted/acted should the impossible actually turn out to be the probable?
After reading so many paranormal fiction books–I can only hope that i would react as some of my favorite characters have..lol. Because I don’t think anyone would write a story about a 35 yr. old woman literally pee-ing her pants when her Saint Bernard actually turns out to be a “saint”….
probably not much of a storyline there. LOL
[Reply]
Stacey,
I hope I would. It would be interesting to know.
[Reply]
Patricia,
Yes, the ghost book, Haunted Virginia: Legends, Myths and True Tales, contains stories in that area also. It would be by my names, Pamela K. Kinney, not Sapphire Phelan.
