Posted under Contests, Interviews by Site Hostess on Tuesday 29 September 2009 at 8:38 am

A big welcome to our readers today! Be sure to read to the end of the interview to find out how to WIN the fabulous prizes being offered up.

PLEASE NOTE: This is not a fixed time event, the post just goes live at 10:30 am CDT. You can stop by any time during the day or evening and leave your questions and chat.

PLEASE KEEP SPOILERS TO A MINIMUM. Not all of the readers today have read Karen’s book.

Interview:

Hi Karen!

Welcome to Bitten by Books, we are excited to have you here today!

I would like to thank you taking the time to join us for the question and answer session with our readers. It has been very interesting to get to know more about you and what makes you tick as a writer! Readers, if you haven’t done so already please stop by and get your copy of Karen’s book Angel of Death.

BBB: What are the most challenging and the most rewarding aspects of writing?

KD: The biggest challenge to writing is finding the time to do so. Working full time, taking care of my son and husband and other obligations such as to my writing career (publicity, marketing, appearances, interviews, etc) and family and friends means that carving out a slice of time to write is often difficult. It is one of the main reasons why I ended up getting a net book so that I could write during my lunch breaks at work.

The most rewarding aspects of writing are two-fold. The first one is when I can author a sentence that evokes exactly what I wish to say in a way that is not usually seen in prose. I really enjoy discovering new words to help describe moods and scenes. The dictionary and the thesaurus have become some of my best friends. The second one is when someone, having read my work, comes back to me and tells me how much they love it.

The best of these was when a couple bought Angel of Death and the husband read it first. His wife, having not completed reading it due to her own obligations, was informed by her husband that he was withholding sex from her until she finished my book. Needless to say that when I heard this I was stunned!

BBB: Do you consider your book Angel of Death paranormal fiction or horror? and do you think it is important to distinguish between the two?

KD: Angel of Death falls under several categories and in fact when I pitched the novel to agents and publishers I often stated it was of the horror genre. Sometimes I would say that it is dark fantasy, but paranormal fiction works just as well.

As for distinguishing between the two genres, I think it’s a matter of scale. The horror genre is changing and sub-genres are coming out of it.

When I was at FaxExpo this past August I was on the ‘Vampires in Fact and Fiction’ panel with Kelley Armstrong, Elizabeth Miller and Nancy Kilpatrick the question about the divergences within horror fiction came up. It was agreed upon that paranormal fiction, dark fantasy, etc were all stemming from the original horror genre and depending upon where the fiction is on the scale between these you will be able to find the right genre.

I will state that Angel of Death has many aspects of paranormal fiction. There is romance and the bulk of the characters are preternatural, but there definitely is a horrific element in my novel.

BBB: If you had to go back in time to change one thing, what would it be?

KD: In the book? Nothing. I’m very happy with it.

In my life. Nothing. I’m very happy with my life. :)

BBB: What is the most ridiculous thing that you have thought about doing to any of your characters but never did?

KD: I’m not one to keep my characters from doing stupid or ridiculous things. Fernando is case and point on that. But the one thing that I almost did that would have been completely inconceivable was making the Angel a virgin until he meets Jeanie. I nixed that early on. It was a completely stupid idea and did not fit in with my understanding of his character.

I did want him to have some of the innocence that comes with inexperience and I think I dealt with that in a reasonable way.

BBB: What suggestions can you give to aspiring writers about forging ahead with their first published book?

KD: Never give up! Never surrender!

Funny enough it’s Sherrilyn Kenyon’s advice too.

I would also have to say that the publishing industry is changing drastically and educating oneself about how the old traditional model works and how the new models are emerging will help a new author decide which course to steer. In other words…read, research and write.

BBB: How do you keep track of your world building?

KD: I have an extremely active imagination.

When I wrote Angel of Death and “Changeling” I did not use an outline or notes. Nothing was written down until I wrote the story. I’m tending to do the same with the next novel, but this time I did jot down a basic summary, but it’s shifting as my imagination plays with things.

BBB: What do you feel are the benefits of the new electronic readers such as Kindle 2 or Sony Digital Book Reader to the environment?

KD: Environmentally they can be a good thing, but you can’t take an electronic reader to the beach and read for hours and hours…heck you can’t take them camping in the middle of nowhere without loosing power at some point. Personally, I love the visceral experience of a physical book. Nothing can replace the scent, the feel, the enjoyment of physical pages bound together and jacketed with beautiful artwork. It would be like replacing a painting on the wall with a computer monitor image of it. Where’s the texture in that?;)

BBB: What impact do electronic readers create on the bottom line for authors in the end? Do you feel they have a negative impact or positive, or no impact at all that you can see?

KD: My husband was a recording engineer and producer who worked for quite a number of large recording houses such as Sony and WEA. He’s always cautioned me about electronic forms of my book based upon the experience of musicians in the industry when mp3s and other digital media for them came out. I’m sure many folks remember Kaaza and especially the Napster incident. Once something is in digital form and is available online the copyright holder looses out big time. We’re already seeing this with ebooks. Kindles are being cracked within several hours of new formats being released. The Sony format is cracked. And guess what…folks are selling copies of ebooks online in such places as eBay. Sherrilyn Kenyon has been hit and tons of others. Basically, these authors will never see a cent for the sales of these ebooks because of piracy.

What I do see happening is that a teaser of the book will be available online for download, but one will have to buy the physical book if they want to read the rest.

My publisher and I are carefully watching the ebook trend right now to see what will happen, but for now my publisher does not want to risk my book as an ebook.

BBB: Can you tell us about Angel of Deathand the general storylines that drives it?

KD: The edition of Angel of Death that is currently out includes the prelude story - “Changeling”. I guess I should start with that and try not to put in any spoilers.

Changeling is the origin story of the Angel of Death. It starts with his untimely birth in Roman-Celtic Wales. Due to his strange colouring he is rejected by his mother and is exposed as a Changeling. He is found by the local healer “Auntie” who keeps him hidden from the rest of humanity with threats that if found he will be badly hurt or killed. Her prophesy comes true when the boy is 9. It is then that he is exposed for the first time to the White Face Demons. It is a time of change for him as the beating leaves him irrevocably altered. He is introduced, by Auntie, to Geraint, the Chief of the local Tribe, and is secretly trained in the warrior arts. After loosing Geraint to war, he looses Auntie which sends him into seclusion. It is during a hunting accident that he is Chosen and Father Paul Notus takes over the care and mentoring of the Angel. It is Notus who gently brings him into the world and teaches him that though there are many horrors, there are many lights in the darkness.

Angel of Death takes place during Victorian London. The Mistress of Vampires has captured Notus in an effort to force the Angel’s compliance in finding out who is murdering the Chosen in her domain. Reluctantly, the Angel is paired with Fernando de Sagres, another vampire, and is joined by Notus’ mortal housekeeper, Jeanie. Through their adventures the Angel is again plagued by the White Faced Demons from his past while his heart opens to Jeanie and while Fernando continues to pry in finding out the Angel’s secrets. The Angel walks a fine line but when he and Fernando are captured by the perpetrators of the genocide all secrets are revealed, to the Angel’s detriment. The Angel does discover the culprits but at a high cost.

There are several sub plots within Angel of Death. Many are left open for the next novel. The main sub plots are, of course, the relationship between the Angel and Jeanie, the recurrence of the White Faced Demons and what that entails, the relationship with Fernando which proves extremely problematic and of course the undercurrent sub plot of those causing the genocide which will be expounded upon in the next two novels.

BBB: What else do you currently have in the works? When can we expect your next book?

KD: I am currently at working writing the next book in the series - “Shadow of Death: Book Two of the Chosen”. If all goes well it will be available next fall. After that I am contracted to write the last book in the series “Thanatos: Book Three of the Chosen.” I have also been asked to write Fernando’s story too.

BBB: If one only one of your stories could be made into movie or tv show, which one would you love to see come to life and who would your dream cast be?

KD: Honestly, I don’t know if my books could be turned into movies. Maybe a tv series. As for actors, I haven’t a clue as I’m not up on the current young actors in Hollywood unless they’ve done children’s movies. LOL

But seriously, I really think my novels would be best served as anime.

BBB: Where do you see the paranormal genre headed? Can you see it slowing down in the near future, or do you think that the immediate future is pretty bright for it?

KD: I think that the paranormal genre is now established and is going full tilt. I do think that because the large Traditional Publishing houses want to make money quickly they are putting a lot of paranormal fiction out there. The big issue is not to over saturate the market.

BBB: Do you have any personal traits that you have written into the characters of your books?

KD: All my characters have some aspects of myself in them, but none more so that Notus. He represents my love of books and the written word. He is my parental and caring self, even to the detriment that I forget about myself. I love Notus and in “Shadow of Death” he’ll really be put through the ringer. Fernando is my mischievous/bitchy self, my dark side if I really let it out. Jeanie is my caring and compassionate self coupled with serious stubbornness. Yes…I can be very stubborn. The Angel is well…that I’m not going to say. Those who know me know who he is to me.

BBB: What thoughts went through your mind when you autographed your first book…. or your 49th one…?

KD: I just love it! I love meeting folks, talking with them, twittering, Fbing, etc… Signing their copies creates mutual assured happiness and I like that. I like it even more when I have line-ups.;)

BBB: Do you have a formal education that segued your book towards such a richly historical tale?

KD: I did finish the Creative Writing Program at York University in my early 20’s. As for the history…I love history and love reading about it. I do a heck of a lot of research when writing to make sure that what I’m writing is real. My world is this world. It isn’t alternative or a different universe. I write as if the Chosen are real and you could meet one and never know it unless…well…you get the bite. :)

When writing Changeling and Angel of Death I did go to Wales and England. My regret was that I didn’t get to Calais, France. I do a lot of map work, history research, everything, so that my facts are as correct as they possibly can be before I take poetic license.

BBB: Buffy the Vampire Slayer or True Blood?

KD: I loved Buffy when it was out. I do have to say that I haven’t seen True Blood yet because once my son goes to bed the t.v. gets turned off and I go to work writing. I have a friend who is going to loan me the dvd’s of season 1 as I need to watch them before January.

BBB: If you could have dinner with ANY literary figure in history, who would it be and why?

KD: I would have to say Bram Stoker. I would love to find out what his inspiration was in writing Dracula and find out what was in the missing 100 pages of manuscript. To hear his vision of what a vampire is/was would be absolutely amazing.

Thank you so very much for having me here on Bitten By Books. I am extremely honoured to be counted amongst the exalted crew and authors. I look forward to everyone’s questions.

    Good interview.

I wish the technology for e-books was moving along faster in Canada. I have six books out right now with Ravenousromance.com and they are in e-book format, although a few of them are in audio and now, finally, print.

However, I do see e-books as the wave of the future and certainly it’s all evolving very quickly in the present.

    Good luck with the book!

Before I start answering questions, I want to say a huge thank you to Rachel for having me here. I am so thrilled to participate in Bitten By Book’s amazingness.;) I also want to say thank you to Hockeyvampiress. You are an awesome woman and Rachel did everyone (especially me) a great service by having you here as a reviewer!

    Okay…now onto answering your questions.:)

@Rachel from Bitten By Books - Hi there, sweetie! Thanks for having me!
Yep. you read that right. There are TWO novels in Angel of Death. Changeling: Prelude to the Chosen is given as a bonus novel - so two books for the price of one.

This format will go out of print once Shadow of Death:Book Two of the Chosen comes out next year. My publishers will be breaking Changeling and Angel of Death into their own editions to go with Shadow.

@Shirley - Oh boy! Right off the track and it’s a goodie. I just love you for that! Thanks!

My favourite author of all time, hmmm…I have to pick only one? OY! Okay…I’m going to keep it simple. I do read a lot of books from different genres, but since here at BBB we’re dealing with paranormal fiction, I’ll keep it to that…therefore it would have to be C.S. Friedman and her Coldfire Trilogy.

I love sci-fi/fantasy, historical and paranormal/horror fiction, but C.S. Friedman did an amazing job in weaving these genres together into a trilogy that I just love.

@Marrisa - Hey Marrisa, great to see you here! If I had a blissfully peaceful day without a husband, or my son, or work, or any other obligation…without a doubt I would spend the day at a spa and get myself pampered, topping it all off with a two hour deep tissue massage or hot stone massage. (Just thinking about it makes me sigh.;)

@Trudi - I don’t know when or if my book will be available for Kindle. My publisher is watching the trends and is very concerned about piracy.

@Shirley - Hi there, again.;) I’m actually doing one right now, but I’m sticking close to home as most of the events I’m going to are in in the Greater Toronto Area. I will be at the Ottawa Small Press Book Fair at the end of November. You can find out more about this on my website. We are also looking at finding an English venue in Montreal. If all goes well, we’ll start branching out into the U.S.A. once Shadow of Death is released.

    Cheers!

@Gwenyth Love - Thanks for popping by and having me as a celebrity judge for Dark Idol 2009-2010! http://www.blacklighthorror.ca/darkidol And thank you so much for all your kind and wonderful words.

Hey folks…any of you who love to write horror/paranormal fiction have to check out the contest. Bitten By Books’ own Hockeyvampiress is also a celebrity judge!

@Sephera Giron - Oh how wonderful that you dropped by! Everyone! Sephera is an amazing paranormal author too.:) It was great seeing you at Word On The Street this past Sunday.

I agree with you that ebooks are a wave of the future, but the publishing industry has to be very careful not to fall into the pitfalls the music industry did. Regardless of the success of ebooks, physical books will always be around.

@Elaine G - Heart disease runs in my family. I have to say Beaver Tails. In any case they are yummier!

@Raonaid Luckwell - Thanks so much for the welcome! I appreciate it! I also appreciate all your wonderful efforts in getting the word out! Thanks!

I think that if you have a weakness for Celts you’ll like my novels.;) I have a weakness for all things Celtic too.:)

Oooo…a collaboration…hmmmm…another toughie but goodie. I’m going to throw out Diana Gabaldon. I know she doesn’t write paranormal fiction, but I just love her writing style and her historical novels. If given the chance I think she and I could come up with something unique.

@Theresa - My inspiration for my writing goes directly to the Welsh Celtic mythology. But the originating impetus for writing came from playing an online role playing game many years ago. I am also encouraged greatly by the other authors I meet (some albeit briefly) and talk with.

    Cheers!

Angel of Death looks to be a great read, I’m always wanting a new book so I best start dropping hints to my OH.
I do have a question, why do you think that Celtic peoples and the way of life seems to lend itself to paranormal fiction so well?

Hi Karen. Thanks for joining us here today.

I think Diana Gabaldon does sort of fit into the paranormal category, what with the time-travel and all. So, perhaps the two of you could write about time-traveling angels and vampires. :)

  20. Comment by Karen Dales — September 29, 2009 @ 11:06 am

@Tracey McLeod - Hi Tracey! Well, you always know where you can get a copy.;) And it does make a great gift.:) (okay…that was bad.;)

I think that it is because our culture in the west is heavily influenced by the Brits and the Celts. After all Canada and the US, even OZ, were colonies of the British Empire. Folks there (and here) still believe in the wee folk - who are the diminutive versions of the original Celtic spirits and deities. There is a lot of mystery as to who the original Children of Don/Danu were and that lends itself to a lot of fantasy. Heck - most, if not all, of the Christian high holidays were Celtic/Norse holidays. Writers draw from what we know, subconsciously or otherwise, and that may be a big reason why. Now with my novels, I’m very conscious about the Celtic connection.

    Cheers!

I posted this question earlier but forgot about the time diff.. I read it took 14 years to complete two books. Did you ever think, “I’m not good enough.” Or, “Why am I doing this?”

The reason I ask, is I have been working on my WIP for two years now and sometimes, my self concious tells me that.

    Thanks,
    Fallon H.

@Michele H - I have written in the science fiction and fantasy genres, but that was when I was younger. I just love writing and if the story comes to mind, then I write it. Angel of Death and Changeling all have historical and fantasy elements to them. I’m not one to be limited by labels.;)

@Heather C - I’ve always been interested in the paranormal from as far back as I can remember. My favorite television shows were Strange Paradise, Hilarious House of Frightenstein, Bewitched (big influence there) and I dream of Jeanie! I’ve always loved all things witchy and vampire. My favorite holiday of the year has always been and will continue to be Hallowe’en.:)

@fallon hadley - Several times through my journey in writing the novels I did feel as though I couldn’t write any more. Issues of not wanting to finish it because I didn’t want to let it go and getting bummed about rewrites, it’s all part of the process. 14 years was a long time for two books, but during that time I did take off a few years to have my son and take care of him. It was the weirdest…once I hit the 5th month of my pregnancy it felt as though all my creative energies needed to go and take care of this little dude. It was when he was about 3 that I seriously buckled down. Just remember the adage, hun - Never give up. Never surrender. It may take a while, but finish it. Many folks say that they are going to write a novel, only about 1% actually do.:)

    Cheers!

Hi Karen! Thank you so much for being here with us today! Angel of Death sounds like something I would really enjoy and it is now on my TBR list! My questions are:
1)What authors most inspired you to start writing?
    2) As a writer of paranormal fiction, how much do you believe in the paranormal existing in our world today?
    Thank you again!

    Hi Karen,

Thanks for stopping by. Angel of Death sound different than anything I have read in a long time. I am interested in knowing if Angel of Death is based on any historical myth or tale or is it something that you pulled bits and pieces from myth’s or is it total conceived by your imagination?

Thank you again from stopping in.

you thought you couldn’t finish the book and if so why?

  34. Comment by Karen Dales — September 29, 2009 @ 1:09 pm

@Amanda L - 1) The authors that got me started in writing weren’t paranormal/horror authors, they were Sci-Fi/Fantasy authors such as Isaac Asimov, Robert A Heinlin, Alan Dean Foster, Tolkien, Robert Silverberg, Samuel R. Delany, and of course, Frank Herbert. I started reading these authors when I was still in grade school. I didn’t get to Dracula until High School.

    2) In terms of what one reads about in paranormal fiction…I’ll answer it per ‘creature.’ Ghosts - yes. My house was haunted when we first moved in. Werewolves - no, but I’ve met a lot of big hairy men who sometimes act like animals.;) Vampires - in the literary sense, no, but there are many folks out there who do believe they are vampires and do engage in blood exchanges (not the healtiest of past times I have to say). Demons/Angels - these terms are used to describe the Western concept of energetic beings that hinder/help mortal man no matter to terminology, yes. Witches - Sabrina/Samantha/etc types of Hollywood/Disney witches do not exist, but Witches are real and many of them practice the religion of Wicca which is protected (at least here in Canada) by our Charter of Rights. So witches and witchcraft are real.

@MarnieColete I pulled a lot from Welsh Celtic mythology, specifically that of a very unknown deity - Gwyn ap Nudd. I did a heck of a lot of research on him, pullling threads as thin as spidersilk to weave my visions that would influence the books.

@Ven D - When AOD came out in July we did a huge book launch party. Folks were encouraged to dress up gothy or in costume. We even had a bloody cake cutting ceremony. That was yummy. We sold books, did a reading and we also had the amazing Marshall Dane perform for us. I always try to do something special at every event I do.

    Cheers!

Hi Karen! I haven’t read your book but I have added it to my list. It sounds spellbinding. Can’t wait to read it & review it on my page. several questions…When did you first discover your love for paranormal/horror and do you have a story (for example, I developed a love for horror as a teen watching horror movies with my mom on the weekends, it was our ritual.)

Also since Angel of Death is et in Victorian London, which I love, if you were to insert a historical charcater or person into your story who would you choose? (Bram Stoker or Jack the Ripper, perhaps?)

Also I love the website and the blog, you need an email subscription button on those so we can follow.

@Amy I - What paranormal creature I wouldn’t want to meet in real life…I’d have to say a werewolf. Regardless of how they are being portrayed, the original lycathropric belief of them was that when a man changed to a wolf state the consciousness of the human subvets to that of the violent wolf. I think the best example of this is the movie “American Werewolf in London”.

@Linda AK - Oh a lot! I do check email/FB/Twitter, etc, and I do tend to find them a distraction, but when I decide to sit down and write, that’s what I do. The main reason is because I have very little time during the day to write.

@Sharon K - There were many times I felt I couldn’t finish the books. There was a time were I couldn’t write anything because I didn’t want to finish it. I didn’t want to let go of the story and the characters. It was only when my husband pointed out to me that I can continue by turning it into a series that it opened up for me. There were other issues, such as being distracted in taking care of a newborn. There was also the emotional issue of having to write a very difficult scene near the end of Angel of Death. I had some serious issues about doing something extremely nasty to one of the main characters. It took some time and lots of meditation and talking with my husband to get over that psychological hump.

    Cheers!

@Ursula D/MidievalGrrl - 1)My parents never were interested in such things. Sure, on Sunday evenings, they let me have dinner in front of the tv so I got to watch Battlestar Galactica and other great shows. The ‘paranormal’ shows that I loved came on early morning or after school. It was a reward for surviving another day!

2)I’m not sure which historical person I’d put in. I would have to research who was alive during the exact time (which I NEVER specify in the book)and see if it would be appropriate. I like to be historically correct.:)

I read the reviews on your book and while this definitely sounds like the type I love to read I was a bit blown away at the price of it- paperback $27.95 at Amazon and $34.95 on your website. I tend to resist and bitch loudly about spending the $14.95 for the oversized paperback and never purchase the hardback in anything. I read a lot and keep very few books I purchase as my house would be overflowing. Yeah, it has a lot of pages but why do you think people will fork over the amount that I generally spend on 3 or 4 books. Convince me (please) that I will not regret not purchasing this amazing book.

@Lisa Richards - There are four contracted for The Chosen Chronicles. Two are out in one volume (this one) - Changeling: Prelude to the Chosen and Angel of Death: Book One of the Chosen. I am currently at work writing Shadow of Death: Book Two of the Chosen and then Thanatos: Book Three of the Chosen will be done. Because of the success of this book, I’ve been asked by so many people whether or not I’ll write Fernando’s story. I’m seriously thinking about it.;)

As for a question I’d love to be asked but haven’t…hmmm…where do I think my career as a published author is going?;)

@Mike Richards - first of all, the Amazon.com price of $27.95 is in U.S. Dollars. Being Canadian and my publishers are Canadian, the $34.94 from the website is in Canadian dollars. Exchange rate and all.

Angel of Death is a Trade Paperback (not mass market) and includes TWO (2)novels in one volume. So, on price alone, if you were to pay individually for the two novels (which will occur next year when they are separated at the release of Shadow of Death) you are, in fact, paying LESS.

As for not regretting buying and reading the book…I don’t think you’ll regret it. BBB’s review is just one. I’ve been getting comments back from people all over cursing me because they can’t wait to read the next one. I’ve had couples purchase one book and fight over it until they bought a second one. I’ve had husbands cut their wives off from their ‘husbandly duties’ until wives have finished reading it. I have fans purchasing extra copies just to make sure that their friends can’t borrow theirs. I’ve had folks go Golum on me and hug the book to them saying, “My precious.” You can take my word for it, or you can head over to my FB group and ask around. I think other people will give similar answers.:)

@Alicia H - My favorite character is the Angel of Death because within him lies something so profound that many of us deny out loud that we feel the same. He is by far my most ‘human’ character, even amongst the humans in the books.

    Cheers,

    Karen

The answer to the question, is of course, you.;) Having Sherrilyn Kenyon accept a copy of my book, and then say ‘Oh baby, I’m so proud of you.’ and give me a HUGE hug was the event.

As for wayward thoughts of other series, not yet. I’m really enjoying writing within this ‘world.’

@Mike Richards - another point is that if you order the book from my publisher, you get a personalized signed edition. There may be some numbered limited editions available, but those are on a first come first serve basis through the website.

I actually don’t like Zombies. When I was 9 I wanted to watch the original Night of the Living Dead at my birthday party. You know, the black and white version? Well, living only two blocks away from a large cemetery I was FREAKED! For about 4 months I did not sleep very well and was always scared that the zombies would come to eat my brains.

@Vale - 1) What is the true nature of the Angel of Death? That is an interesting question and one I really can’t divulge at this time. One needs to read the book to find the answers. If I gave it away, it wouldn’t be as much fun!

2)I think that my novels would be best served as anime because of several reasons a) There is usually a lot more time devoted into the series of an anime. Successful shows go on for a long time, but even still, AOD lends itself to that style of story telling b)Good luck trying to find an actor who fits the description of the Angel! With anime there are no limitations except to the artists imaginings, and c)Anime has a HUGE following and it tends to stay around a lot longer than tv shows.

Now, if I was offered to sell the television or movie rights, I wouldn’t balk at it.:)

@Katie D. - Ah ha! You’re the last for tonight, lucky you.:)

Before I get a chance to write I do go online and clear through emails and the like. The biggest issue as to whether or not I have time to write is how co-operative my son is in getting to sleep on time!

Thanks for posting on your blog! I appreciate it!

    Cheers,

She saved the best for last. hehehe I completely relate the kids to sleep to catch up on things. If they get really out of hand, I lock them in the bathroom and put butter on the door knob. Their cholesteral is through the roof but I get quiet time. LOL Just kidding, maybe.

    Hi Karen.
Thanks for coming & sharing with all of us. Great interview. I still have AoD on my “need to get” list. The glimpses you gave of the Angel on one of the blogs around it’s release date where to good.

Questions: #1 I’m not sure if I am remembering right or not, but I was thinking you mentioned your hubby designed the cover. Will he be doing/giving imput on the covers for the next books?

#2 With your experience/ability with what I call the wider world, [wouldn't think your crazy, there's too much out there]do you think an artists muse is a related thing. I’ve read alot of writers mention their characters direct/talk etc. in their head & I get the impression it’s not like thinking thru a scenario. What’s you view ?

@Lesley Cheah - I started writing at a very early age. In grade school to be exact. My first ‘novel’ was called ‘Tuesday Jane Disappeared.’ I think I still have it around but don’t know where it is. I had a lot of support from my teachers. Even into high school I took creative writing programs and my teacher there was very encouraging that I’d end up published. She even helped me to polish a short story that I sent to several magazines. Unfortunately it wasn’t picked up. It was my first experience in trying to get professionally published.

It was into university that I took the three year (at that time…it’s been 20 years) Creative Writing Program, which is damned hard to get into. In all that time I never stopped writing, and continue to do so.

@iokijo - 1) Yes. I did mention that my husband did the cover designs. I suggested him to my publisher, they saw his work, and accepted. My husband owns WAVDesign Studios, a multi-media studio that does music recording/production, photography, videography and graphic design.

    2) It’s a combination. Often times the scenes and characters write themselves in my head as if I’m watching a movie unfold, but I’m still the ultimate director and if needed (due to continuity or other issues) I’ll step in and make the necessary corrections in how I want them to act/be, even to the point of having to re-write sections in my head to ensure the story flows and the characters are realistic.

@stacey smith - In the historical sense the Angel of Death is a Changeling because he was given up to die in the woods in the middle of winter. His parents believing that by doing so their ‘real’ child would be returned to them from the Fae. Now…historically speaking, when this occurred, the babies died. It was a way for families to rid themselves of genetically damaged children. Many cultures did this (and some still do to this day), but it’s the idea of the Fae that goes with it that makes it interesting. I do play with it and leave you guessing.:)

@Tracey D (bl0226)- I think book trailers can help a bit with book sales, but what really sells a book is its story. The trailers’ job is to make you interested enough to take a look at the book and then decide to buy it. I think it’s a great marketing tool, but it’ll be a while before book trailers are seen as commercials on television.

    Cheers,

    Karen

“@Theresa - My inspiration for my writing goes directly to the Welsh Celtic mythology. But the originating impetus for writing came from playing an online role playing game many years ago. I am also encouraged greatly by the other authors I meet (some albeit briefly) and talk with.”

It sounds like we have similiar interests. In my experience, Prior to about 10 years ago, not many girls played RPGs (online or P&P). Sometimes I felt like I was the only girl playing.. which wasn’t always a bad thing :) Anything related to Celtic/Welsh/Druidic Mythology is also right up my alley. I am seriously going to stop by Borders on the way home and get your book.

Sounds like a great read. Will be an interesting series. Celtic lore is a big favorite of mine. Work in a small library, so I’m always looking into new authors.
    Good luck with your books.

    Hi Karen!

I’m just loving the book(s)!!! I have to keep reminding myself that my sister wrote this. I’m eating up every word and enjoying the characters, the trouble they find themselves in, and the way their minds work.

How much did your trip to England and Wales influence the development of the story? What was your inspiration for adding a Portuguese character?

    Congratulations!

    Hi Karen,

Your book sounds so interesting! I have 2 questions:

    1. What made you want to write this story? (sorry if it was already asked)

    2. How much/what type of research did you have to do for this book or any of your books?

    Thanks so much!

    1. Are you a visual person? Does this effect your writing and world building?

@Laurie Stewart - Hi Laurie! Thanks for coming to BBB! I’ll be selling autographed copies at the Ottawa Small Press Book Fair, so if you can make it there, we’re all good. So far, as things are currently planned, my husband and son will be coming with me and my marketing Goddess. If you can’t make it to the Fair I’m always looking forward to having dinner with friends.;)

@Barbi Gould - Hey Barbie! (Yep…she’s my sister.:) It wasn’t the trip to England and Wales that influenced my story, tho I have to admit that I love those countries! It was nice to have the added excuse of research for the book.:) As for the character Fernando de Sagres - when I was playing the online RPG that helped instigate me writing the books, my friend, John Santos was renting a room from my husband and I. He also played in the RPG and Fernando was his character in the game. I asked him permission if I could use him in my book, but his character is quite different than originally set up by John. John was a great help in the Portuguese in the book.

@Biki - I think, for the most part, that the story needed to be told and I was the unsuspecting conduit for it. I’ve always loved to write and this seemed to blossom in my imagination fully formed.;)

In regards to your second question, I do a lot of research for my novels, even down to studying maps to make sure that I get the geography correct. For historical aspects of the story I do a lot of research there as well. I enjoy it. With Shadow of Death I bring the story to my home town of Toronto and even though I’ve lived here all my life I am looking at areas and buildings in my city in a brand new light. For example, there’s a section I’m currently working on that takes place at the Royal Ontario Museum and I went there to really suss out the place to get my facts as correct as possible.

@Elie N - 1) I am a very visual person and every aspect of my book is as if it is a movie playing inside of my head. I love it! It really helps with my world building because some of it is directed visualization but most of it isn’t.

    2) What is the most shocking thing about me? This is the second attempt for me to write this. What I was going to be written magically disappeared so I’m going to assume that the Gods don’t want me to say. BUT…if you read that sentence again, the clue is there.:)

    Cheers,

    Karen
