On the Edge by Ilona Andrews
When the first installment in The Edge series begins, Rose Drayton takes her two younger brothers, Jack and Georgie, on a trip to Walmart to buy new shoes for Jack. This expedition can prove tricky and even dangerous for the Draytons, as they need to cross the boundary of their world in order to get there. The Broken, a mundane place much like the one we inhabit, and the Weird, a realm of magic, exist separately yet very near one another. The Edge, a narrow band that runs between the two worlds, is a place of magic and mystery with characteristics of both, yet maintains its own culture. Edgers, the Draytons are able to cross into the Broken when necessary, but the magic they possess and wield does not work there. On their way to the store, a strange man appears in the road, jumps on the hood of their truck, and then bounds off into the woods. Startled and puzzled, Rose does not what to make of the encounter.
The next day, on her way home from her job in the Broken, back in the Edge Rose comes upon one of the neighbor children cornered by a beast of a type she has never seen before. Compounding the odd events, the next day the man from the road incident appears in Rose’s front yard. Though this kind of thing has not happened for a while, it used to occur frequently, as Rose possesses a rare talent for an Edger: she can produce white magic, an ability that makes her highly desirable for producing children. Having becoming adept at fending off unwanted suitors, Rose declares she will issue three challenges to the newest arrival, Declan, who is a blueblood from the Weird, before she will go anywhere with him. Though she intends to provide him with impossible trials, Rose’s plans become complicated by both the bond her brothers develop with Declan, and the dangers presented by the marauding beasts that feed on magic which will require his help.
While most urban fantasy focuses upon separate worlds occupying the same space, Andrews creates a fascinating universe where three distinct, individual worlds literally exist side by side. Peopled with unique characters in a richly- layered text laden with imagery, this highly improbable place feels completely real. Written with generous doses of humor and heart underscoring the imaginative narrative, the authors ensure that readers will relish their visit with Rose, Declan, the boys, and the townspeople of LaPorte. This reviewer very much looks forward to the next trip to the Edge in book two.

I am so excited to get my copy of the book. Thanks for the great review! You did a wonderful job describing the story. Since two worlds are hard enough to write about and make it sound believable; the idea of three existing side by side sounds extremely interesting. I look forward to her new world.

This sounds so good. I’ve already pre-ordered it and can’t wait to read it. Ilona always makes such distinct and different worlds. This is a great review and it made me understand more thoroughly what was going to happen in the Edge.

Wow - I enjoyed reading this review. I love it when there is a new take on the alternate realities. I can just see in my head all these realities lined up in a nice little row.
I might have to mosey on to B&N and pick this one up.

I read this book shortly after it came out and it is fantastic. I’m very much looking forward to book 2 in the series. If you haven’t read Ilona Andrews other series (Magic Bites, Magic Burns, and Magic Strikes) then you don’t know what your missing! Having read the Magic series (one of my favorites) is what prompted me to buy On the Edge and I wasn’t dissapointed.
