While Damien, the Earl of Sinclair, rested on his private beach, he was surprised to see a beautiful young woman walking along the shore. The beach was difficult to access, and while he puzzled over her presence, he was stunned to see her march determinedly into the water, not stopping though the water washed over her head. Damien rushed to save the young woman and, after struggling with the pounding surf, he was able to pull her to safety. She did not respond to his questioning. Concerned, he brought the young woman to his home, knowing she would get proper care from his sister and their servants. Damien would make sure she was warm and comfortable before questioning her about her actions. After that, he would draw on his powers as a mage and ensure she had a peaceful night’s sleep. He would do anything in his power to keep this young woman safe and well.

Toria half-awakened in confusion, muttering about the assault she had endured, and her pain and terror caused a deep sadness in Damien. Who could be so brutal as to take a young woman, one that appeared to be no older than a child, against her will? With Damien’s sister, Lady Debora, remaining by Toria’s bedside, he knew she would be protected until he could gather more information on who had abused Toria. However, the more Lady Debora heard from Toria, the more certain both Damien and Debora were that Toria must not be returned to her guardian. Since Toria was only fifteen, that meant Damien must take responsibility for her and hide her from her guardian for the next three years. He was more than willing to make the commitment and hoped that Toria would come to realize that she was truly his destiny.

I was very impressed with Damien’s strength of character. As a mage, he could have anything he wanted simply by casting a spell, and yet he preferred not to manage his life by magic. His protectiveness of Toria and willingness to accept the responsibility of her care was admirable. Under his watch, Toria grew from a frightened, insecure child to a well-educated and strong young woman. The characters were very well developed and realistic, and the settings were described clearly and were easy to imagine. This book captured my attention from the beginning and was an absolute delight to read. If you are a fan of historical romance with a large helping of magic, this is definitely the book for you.
